Summary: Dragon Naturally Speaking 7 takes many minutes to start up Product: Wine Version: CVS/GIT Platform: Other URL: http://nuance.com OS/Version: other Status: NEW Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: wine-misc AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: dank@kegel.com
As described in the workaround for bug 9401, Dragon Naturally Speaking 7 takes two to six minutes to start Dragonpad, and another two to four minutes to actually start responding to speech.
To repeat: winetricks fakeie6 install DNS 7 Start DNS 7 and run through training (using keyboard to work around bug 9399 ) Work around bug 9401 by leaving both fatal dialogs open and ignoring them When training complete, mouse over microphone on system menu bar and wait for tooltip to change to "turn microphone on" from "initializing" Right click on microphone icon and choose tools / dragonpad Wait five minutes for dragonpad to start Click on microphone icon to turn microphone on Keep trying to say something into microphone, observe that it ignores you for many minutes but then becomes normally responsive. (The small popup that shows you what it thinks you just said shows up for me at the lower right corner of the screen.)

--- Comment #1 from Dan Kegel dank@kegel.com 2007-09-11 23:02:54 --- Today you also have to ignore one more dialog; after dragonpad is up, and after the <???> window shows up, there's one more dialog: a C library runtime error. Ignore it, and recognition procedes normally.

--- Comment #2 from Dan Kegel dank@kegel.com 2007-09-12 00:00:53 --- Note that DNS8, while not perfect, starts up nearly instantly. See bug 9635 for a description of how to get it working.

--- Comment #3 from Dan Kegel dank@kegel.com 2007-09-12 00:02:11 --- During the long pauses, one sees multiple instances of
err:ntdll:RtlpWaitForCriticalSection section 0x7efec5e4 "loader.c: loader_section" wait timed out in thread 001e, blocked by 002b, retrying (60 sec)
which is probably where the multiple minute delay comes from.

--- Comment #4 from Maarten Lankhorst M.B.Lankhorst@gmail.com 2007-10-10 11:57:56 --- That last message usually happens when a deadlock occurs. Note that it doesn't necesarily have to be a deadlock, it could be that a thread held the lock and then died. I believe wine resolves it by killing the offending process (or perhaps just thread) if the timeout occurs, apparantly dragon naturally speaking doesn't care, and happily moves along.

--- Comment #5 from Susan Cragin susancragin@earthlink.net 2007-11-26 08:25:41 --- This bug should be closed. DNS7 now takes approximately as long to load under Linux as it does Windows. In both cases, the speech recognition engine takes a minute or so to initialize.
