Severity is major as I can't play the game. I've disabled the sound but keeps freezing on that screen.

Just the game is frozen. I can move to a different screen, open a terminal and kill it.
Running on Ubuntu Gutsy, Wine 0.9.59.

Could you try if setting the hl2.exe to win98 helps?
Changing hl2.exe to win98 makes no difference. Changing Steam.exe to win98 causes it to fail to launch with a message to "Please turn off 'compatibility mode'".
I tried launching the game both from within Steam, and from the command line, in the team fortress 2 directory: shell> wine hl2.exe -game tf

--- Comment #11 from Beat Wolf asraniel@fryx.ch 2008-05-12 13:35:14 --- I can confirm this bug on wine 1.0 rc1. (hardy, latest nvidia binary drivers)
I have seen a "workaround" for this bug on a webpages that tells me, that i have to change the language to of the game to enlish. I did that, but the game still loads in german, so i can't verify this workaround.
The developer comment mode works fine, i can walk around the levels etc, i think it is a minor bug, but renders it impossible to play the game. Would be nice if it could be fixed.

Tested under 1.1.10, the Internode servers I mentioned work correctly. Can anyone else confirm that previously broken servers now work?

--- Comment #15 from Matt Callaghan fermulator@sympatico.ca 2009-01-22 19:58:13 --- I can confirm this bug with the following config:
* ATI Radeon X1950 - Using Latest ATI Drivers: {{{ fermulator@fermmy:~$ fglrxinfo display: :0.0 screen: 0 OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc. OpenGL renderer string: Radeon X1950 Series OpenGL version string: 2.1.8304 Release }}} * Wine Version: {{{ fermulator@fermmy:~$ wine --version wine-1.1.13 }}}
Here's how I start TF2: {{{ env WINEDEBUG=fixme-all env WINEPREFIX="/home/fermulator/.wine" padsp wine explorer /desktop=steam,1680x1050 "/mnt/storage/Steam/Steam.exe" -width 1680 -height 1050 -applaunch 440 -console -heapsize 512000 -novid +map_background none "$@" }}}
If I add: {{{ -dxlevel 81 }}} to the command launch, the game no longer freezes on first loading.
Apparently there's an issue with ATI drivers & DX9.1/9.0 functionality?

It is somehow still present. When you get this screen, the game freezes for X seconds (the sound stutters), however afterwards the game works. The report seems to say the game doesn't work, however with latest Wine it does, you simply have to wait these X seconds and it works again.

Still, wine shouldn't freeze for several seconds, unless it's a game bug doing the same on windows.
Is this still present in current (1.1.43 or newer) wine?

Maybe you have to wait, wine was loading something, my computer is fast and maybe that's why the freeze is not so long ? I had this bug since the beginning and I didn't care because TF2 didn't crash.

OS = Ubuntu 10.04 Wine Version = wine-1.1.42 NVIDIA Driver Version = 195.36.24 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation Quadro NVS 135M (rev a1)
When I get to the MOTD (either in offline mode or on any server) when I press the Continue button the sound loops, after a while the sound disappears and Team Fortress is frozen.
I can kill the process, the computer remains stable however I cannot play the game.
