Basically, Wine has two mutually exclusive ways to render fonts on screen : either using the core X11 protocol or to load .TTF files that are stored in your (fake) Windows fonts directory.
In your case, you were using core X11 rendering ... up until the point in time some .TTF file appeared in the fonts directory => Wine switched to using the TTF way of rendering fonts. And as the only available font was the funky one, all your characters appeared corrupted.
So the fix is as Henk suggested : install some TTF fonts alongside the astrological font in the fonts directory (for example the Bitstream ones).
