--- Comment #3 from Douglas E. Warner silfreed-winehq@silfreed.net 2008-01-30 10:22:13 --- I'm also experiencing this bug with a similar setup running wine 0.9.52.
I have steam installed on a vfat partition but set to umask 000 so anyone can write.

Portal: first slice installed fine for me on several machines. I wonder what's different.

--- Comment #8 from Piotrek intothelight@o2.pl 2008-07-01 12:58:22 --- For me, Portal doesn't install because of this bug... I have the game on DVD, and when I install it, it wants to install and update Steam first, and that's when I get the error in this bug. Because Steam gets this error, the Portal installation is stuck.

--- Comment #9 from yellow_onion@orcon.net.nz 2008-07-01 19:16:07 --- I have a work around, Intall steam to wine's C drive (~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Steam/) then sym link ~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Steam/Steamapps to your steamapps folder of your windows install eg /media/windows/Program Files/Steam/Steamapps

--- Comment #14 from Ben Anderson roothorick@new.rr.com 2009-07-20 03:54:56 --- Sounds strikingly similar to Bug #17776. Probably another case of something getting lost in translation between the app (in this case Steam), Wine, and the Linux kernel filesystem drivers, and the app barfing when it can't find that something.
Might even be the same bug.

@#14:
It would seem that this is in fact very similar to, if not the same bug as the one you linked. I successfully reproduced the bug when attempting to install Steam on my system (Ubuntu 9.04, AMD64) to a FAT32 partition.
Hoping this helps to shed some light on the problem.

i had the same problem with an Steam which was installed on my Windows partition before. (NTFS)
A ls -l from the steam folder looks like this:
drwxrwx--- 1 root plugdev 12288 2009-11-04 13:58 Steam
Wine is running as the user disappear so it could be just really an file permission problem? But world of warcraft has the same file permissions and runs just fine with the standard disappear user for wine.

--- Comment #17 from Julian Rüger jr98@gmx.net 2009-12-11 06:43:26 --- Confirming for current git (1.1.34-251-g1d0e02b)...
Steam was installed under windows, started fine first time. It prompted me to restart steam for updating, what I did, and now when I try to start steam again this happens.
I guess if I boot to windows and let it update properly, it will work again.

Would you be able to test if installation of Steam on a linux native filesystem (not FAT32 or NTFS) works with the latest GIT?
