Delorme Street Atlas 2004 - Sooo Close...

Hey all, So this is my first post to the list in several years... I've tried several version so Delorme's Street Atlas under many many versions of Wine over the years. Most of the time, I haven't even been able to get it to install. One version, in the way WAY distant past, did install and I had problems with the serial port and port naming conventions that, IIRC, resulted in some patches to Wine. But all recent versions have been major headaches. I recently tried the 20040716 version of Wine and, just now, the 20040713 version. I was able to install Street Atlas 2004 under that previous version! Yeah! Some problems with things like checkboxes in install shield not being visible (but could be checked if you guessed right where the check box was under the image that was obscuring it) but it did install. Running it becomes another matter. If the data CD is in the CD-Rom drive, I get the modal welcome splash window up but then I get the following errors: [mhw@canyon mhw]$ wine .wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Street\ Atlas\ USA\ 2004/SA2004.exe fixme:ole:CoCreateInstance no classfactory created for CLSID {ebbd44c6-6b55-4aa8-8a22-ceac2ede660f}, hres is 0x80040154 Fatal Error at file , line 0, char 0 Message: err:seh:setup_exception stack overflow 236 bytes in thread 0009 eip 3545a7ab esp 17840f14 stack 0x17840000-0x17940000 Now, the first one doesn't seem to be "fatal". If I don't have the CD in the CD-Rom drive, I still get that error but it come to a dialog box asking if I want to run without the databases or if I want to browse for them. If I then insert the CD and hit browse and browse over to the CD-Rom, it then hits the fatal error as before. The second error seems to be really bad juju. The splash screen just stays on top of everthing else and the whole thing seems hung. I can (and have to) Cntrl-C the application in the terminal window and then the splash screen goes away as the app terminates. This is one Fedora Core 2 with 2.6.7 kernel. Any thoughts or suggestions? Since it's a "stack overflow" (which tend to be pretty damn serious) I figured I would raise this issue on the developers list, rather than the users list. Oh... I also used the winetools package to install things like fonts and MS-installer and VBS runtimes, if that makes a difference. I was unable to install the VC++ runtime, though (didn't try that on 0813 version though). Any recommendations on debugging it further? Regards Mike -- Michael H. Google "RHEL WBEL" vs. "RHEL WBL" shows an overwhelmingly clear result, and whiteboxlinux.org also refers to itself as White Box Enterprise Linux in the page title (plus it mentions WBEL on the home page!). Rewind is an important part for companies who choose to not publish all of their source under the (L)GPL (but hopefully do publish smaller utilities not essential to their core business :-). Hi, If you run regedit in wine and view the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Cryptography\Defaults\Provider Types\Type 001 Type 001 does not have a "TypeName" value. Should Type 001 have a "TypeName" value? CryptEnumProviderTypes calls RegQueryValueEx on this value to see what the provider type is, but fails (but not in an obvious way). Should RegQueryValueEx return an error code describing that there is no such value? If so, what is the error code/name? -- James Hawkins

config converting problem

Hi all, a friend of me would update the wine package (20030813) from his SuSE 9.0 system to the latest availabe package for this system (20040716). After the update following error message appears on each start of wine: .... Warning: the specified Windows directory L"C:\\Windows" is not accessible. Warning: the specified System directory L"C:\\Windows\\System" is not accessible. He get me also an output of the first wine start: Created symlink /home/julian/.wine/dosdevices/c: -> ../${HOME}/.wine/fake_windows .... Created symlink /home/julian/.wine/dosdevices/y: -> ../${HOME} .... Warning: the specified Windows directory L"C:\\Windows" is not accessible. Warning: the specified System directory L"C:\\Windows\\System" is not accessible. After my advise to get me the content of his "~/.wine/dosdevices", he send me the following output: .... lrwxrwxrwx 1 julian users 28 10. Aug 18:50 c: -> ../%HOME%/.wine/fake_windows .... lrwxrwxrwx 1 julian users 9 10. Aug 18:50 y: -> ../%HOME% .... and he send me also his config file (snipped content): [Drive C] "Path" = "${HOME}/.wine/fake_windows" "Type" = "hd" "Label" = "fake_windows" "Filesystem" = "win95" ... (I translated the german dialog with him to english) I think the problem is the ${HOME} variable which is not parsed / correct replaced during the convert process. Windows Default Button Observations

While fixing some compatibility problems in Wine relating to my app, I had the opportunity to compare how Wine handles default buttons to how Windows handles them. [Definition: Default buttons have the BS_DEFPUSHBUTTON style, are drawn with an extra-thick border, and are the buttons chosen when the user types Enter.] I fixed a couple problems today, but there are more issues left: ------- (1) Windows: When a dialog is deactivated in Windows, all buttons are made non-default. When it is activated again, Windows remembers which button was last the default button and makes it default again. It does all this by means of BM_SETSTATE messages. Wine: Default buttons are unaffected by activation/de-activation of their parent dialogs. (2) Windows: When the user clicks and holds on a button, then moves the mouse off that button before releasing it, the button is made default and receives the focus. The existing default button is made non-default. Wine: The button receives the focus but is not made default. -------- My impression is that (1) could be handled by remembering the default button (which, as Krishna Murthy has shown, is not the same as the default button id) in the DIALOGINFO structure. Number (2), however, is more difficult. When a button receives the capture, it can send a BM_SETSTATE to itself easily enough to make itself a DEFPUSHBUTTON, but how does it determine which other buttons to query and make non-default as necessary? It could simply query all its sibling controls, but this wouldn't work if it was contained within a sub-window in the dialog box. How can it determine how far up the hierarchy it needs to go? If you read trough m$ blogs, you'll find that what microsoft usually does is have all sort of workarounds for broken apps, without them lots of stuff would not run on window xp. To work like windows, wine will have to do the same. For example, at some point m$ found that a game called "The sims" didn't work on recent versions of windows, because it freed some heap memory, and then immediately tried to access it. The M$ guys had to reverse engineering the game to find this out, and then introduced a hack that would make windows compensate for the apps bug. The game did work on previous versions of windows. M$ has it's code full of this stuff, they give priority to m$ apps, followed by stuff from big vendors like IBM, adobe, macomedia and so on. Wine will have to unfortunately do the same to achieve 100% compatibility for all the apps that work on windows only thanks to specific hacks. I'm not saying that it's a good solution in this case, but at some point this sort of stuff will have to be done. Ivan.

Large memory reporting

Hi list, I have a Windows program that tries to find out how much memory it has at its disposal using "GlobalMemoryStatus". The machine has 4GB of physical memory and about 100MB of swap. GlobalMemoryStatus returns 2GB of physical memory and 0 available swap. It seems the problem is at dlls/kernel/heap.c, around lines 1150. First we make sure we never report more than 2GB of total or available memory, and then we make sure that we never report more than 2GB combined available physical+swap memory (which effectively zeros the available swap if there is more than 2GB of available memory). The comment next to this is: /* work around for broken photoshop 4 installer */ While I understand the need for the workaround, this significantly reduces the usefulness of the whole function. My question: Can we make these two rounding conditional on the application not wishing to work with more than 2GB? I.e. - can we let applications that were linked with LARGEADDRESSAWARE see the true state of the machine? If so, is there a way for me, when at the heap.c code, to know whether that flag was set on loading the current process? console message encoding

Is it known that console message printed to output in wine internal encoding (OEM?), not in locale encoding. Is it bug or just needed coding right behavior? Missing Registry Value "VersionNumber"

I tried to install MS Visual Studio 6, but the install program exited after two seconds without error message. When I read the debug logs, I found out that the installer needs the following value: HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\VersionNumber I had a look at my original Windows (98 SE) system.dat and there the value was set to "4.10.2222". I added the value with regedit in wine and the program was satisfied :-) Does someone know more about this value and its necessity? Should it be added to wine's standard set of registry keys and values? Future of .wine/config

Hello! I read on another thread that the config file is going to disappear in future wine versions. While I think that the dosdevices-principle is a good idea (it's very intuitive), there are several disadvantages in moving the content of the config file to the registry: 1. Even if the registry keys and values of wine's configuration should be well documented, it's easier to set some values using a text editor than to use regedit and look for the keys. 2. Although it might be convenient to access both, wine's and the Windows programs' data, using the same functions, this should not be done as there should be a clear distinction between wine and the programs it runs. 3. If a program misbehaves and messes up your registry and/or if you decide to start again with a clean installation, you just delete some registry files and directories and have a new system (I think of the case you don't work in a native Windows installation) without to setup wine's configuration again. 4. To put wine's configuration into the registry is a step towards a "Wine-is-Windows", i.e. not just providing Windows' functionality but also behaving like Windows (and this should be avoided under all circumstances ;-) ). Wine is "just" an emulator for Windows, it is not supposed to be a new "Open Source Windows". The Windows' handling of configuration data (every application puts its data into the same two files: the registry) is inferior compared to the Unix' one's (every application has its own configuration file/directory in a common place). TransGaming put a ~/Transgaming_Drive symlink in the home dir. Proposal: patch wineprefixcreate to build "~/Virtual C Drive" as the users fake windows tree (notice the lack of ugly underscores)? The problem is we don't have a good way to upgrade it. Currently once the users .wine is created their registry is "static" and even if we improve the default registry it'll never be recreated. Ditto for COM registrations, they are only done at wineprefixcreate time as well. This comes back to the discussions me, Dimi and Alexandre were having a while ago. Many users don't read info/error dialogs especially when technical, likewise Wine has to be auto-configuring. Not only is it required by most packaging technologies (they don't allow user interaction, often by design) but if we want Wine to ever stabilise and become a part of most distros base sets again it has to involve zero user interaction to setup.

But patching works with both your patch, that appears to have the extra space, but doesn't, and with my patch that doesn't appear to have an extra space. I have of what is going on. BTW the patch that I sent was edited manually, so had a missing space at every added line. Ivan.

RESEND CryptEnumProviders a->w cleanup and tests

Hi, I'm not sure whether these two patches were misplaced or they were considered not good enough to be committed, but I've included the patches now. I spent a lot of time hunting down any bugs in my unicode version of CryptEnumProviders as well as writing tests of its functionality. All the tests succeed except for one (wrong error message being sent back from undersized buffer) but that bug is a part of the original CryptEnumProviders as well and as soon as this patch can be committed, I can submit a fix for that bug. If there turns out to be problems with the patch, or the style is not up to par with wine coding standards, please let me know, because I really want to get this committed. -- James Hawkins

This is getting to be a common request. I think what I am going to do is make a script that tars up the appdb every night and puts it up for download. The only table it will not dump will be the userdb, for privacy reasons. I'll email you all again when I have something whipped up. Different X Displays and Wine

I'm trying to connect and run a remote X session from 2 different machines and I fail to run Wine applications. - I connect from Machine M1 using ssh -X (or -Y) run a wine app all is very well. - I connect from another Machine M2 using ssh -X using the same user. The second instance fails with: <message> X Error of failed request: BadWindow (invalid Window parameter) Major opcode of failed request: 15 (X_QueryTree) Resource id in failed request: 0xa0002b Serial number of failed request: 137 Current serial number in output stream: 137 </message> Needless to say that if I exit the Wine application on M1 than M2 will run with out any problems. [Q] Is it at-all possible to run Wine on 2 different $DISPLAY s, or is the X-Server a Wine-Server resource. Will using a different user help? Will using desktop mode help? Has any one been successful with letting different network users connect and run Windows Apps under wine? How did they Setup wine? How does Codeweavers do it with their Server Product? Help with winemaker

Hi, I am trying to port a project from windows to unix. I have installed redhat 7.0. After installing wine, i tried using winemaker on a set of modules that are interdependent. By modules, I mean sub-programs. When I run winemaker from the top of the project directory, it creates only Makefile and no configure, configure.in and Makefile.in scripts. Therefore I am not able to use ./configure --with-wine=/usr/local/wine. Since, I cannot run the ./configure command, I am not able to run the make command. Why are the configure and other files not being generated? Any help would really be appreciated. My project uses, C and C++ code. Thank you, Veerendra Tippanagoudar. I am responding to the italicized note in the user manual (pdf). 1) Your early adopters probably do not look at the user manual any more. 2) Having written some documents like this, I do not believe that most people realize how difficult it is to make a process simple and clear without making it insulting. A company I used to work for had a 5 day course on writing user manual and procedures that they marketed nation wide. I do not know if the still do so. I went through that course and it was amazingly difficult. All you need to do is write down what to do and no one will understand you. 3) Those who are into Linux are into the bleeding edge of technology and want to make it run, not tell others how to make it run. An audience of true nerds, and I will raise my hand, will like to see the thing work. Documentation is in last place. I appreciate what you run into on the thankless task of documentation and keeping it current. My guess is that this is the one thing that is the major weak spot in Linux. If anything except perhaps support, will kill Linux, it will be lousy documentation. Having been a Unix system administrator for a long while, I have seen great systems go away because of documentation or support. Legato nearly went under because of support. The system is good, I chose it to back up 25 production Unix boxes into a tape silo over a 1G fiber network. After I left, I understand they went with another system because they could no longer get any answers to their questions and the documentation was not clear. I am retired on disability now. I have heard rumors that Legato has turned the problems around and is recovering some of it's lost market share. I have just started trying to use Wine on Fedora Core2 and I will be reading all the documentation. What I have seen so far has been well done. dosmem: MCB implementation

Hi, I'm trying to run freecom[1] of the freedos project in wineconsole. After changing comspec in user.reg and some ugly hacks to kernel/dosmem.c it runs (dosmem_paragraph.patch). But it will never run cleanly without proper MCB support (it does its own MCB-chain walking, like a lot of other programms). I tried to implement it (dos_mcb.patch also ugly), and now i have some design questions: - where to implement MCB's? kernel or winedos?
