winetest: what next?

OK, So assume we get the show rolling, tests will run on various boxes, results will be send back to WineHQ, nice colorful pages will be generated, and a beautiful index page will put all these together, being linked from the Status (http://www.winehq.org/site/status) page. Are we done? I think not. This is a very important piece of infrastructure, and it's buried rather deep into the bowels of WineHQ. Moreover, it's not easy to monitor the changes in testing status. As such, I would like to have a "Weekly testing update" posted to in the News section, with stuff like: how many tests were added, how many failed/successed, etc. since last week. Maybe a list of DLLs where changes were observed, and so on. To get these statistics (and possibly other interesing bits) in the future, I'm thinking at storing all these test results in the database. NB: I'm not proposing that we change the current processing of dissect & gather, it is very nice, and it's a big bonus that it works without a database. All I'm saying is that we can augment dissect to also save stuff to the database. For the database, we need two simple tables: wine_test_releases, and wine_test_results. wine_test_releases: build_id VARCHAR(20) NOT NULL cvs_ts VARCHAR(20) cvs_tag VARCHAR(20) url VARCHAR(256) NOT NULL publish_ts TIMESTAMP NOT NULL This table will be populated by Brian's script, when a new release is publised. One of cvs_ts or cvs_tag will be NOT NULL, and will specify how to get to the exact source used for the build. Nightly builds will use cvs_ts (cvs -D <cvs_ts>), while official releases done by Alexander will use cvs_tag (cvs -r <cvs_tag>). A Few Newbie questions

Hello All, I have been watching Wine grow over a period of time and it looks like things are getting better each time that I visit the site. Let me first say "GREAT JOB" to all of the developers on the project. I am wondering a few things and hope someone could take a stab at answering these for me. 1.) Is wine thread save and can I run many instances without problems? Also, can multiple users be running multiple instances without major degrades in system performance for each instance? 2.) What is the main differences between the WineX and Wine developments? Which is more stable? Thanks in advance, Lonnie.

Wine Directory Mapping sub-system

Hello All, Is there some where that I can read docs that talk about the directory mapping sub-system? In particular, I am interested in the way that you can "map" user directories in the configuration file in a users HOME directory. What I am thinking about is how one might use this same idea to "Jail" Linux user directories so that users cannot navigate out of their home directory as a security feature. Just playing with ideas, but I thought that the Wine sub-system might offer a great feature for this in that applications could not do anything even if they were to "Break" Out" as they would be going through a translation layer just like the Window applications but onlu still being Linux applications. Any ideas on this? Thanks, Lonnie

Following a discussion on IRC with a new user, we probably want to list on the Download page on winehq what other packages are available on sf, besides Wine per se. Also, besides DCOM95, there are a couple other Microsoft packages that people are sometimes encouraged to install to get some functionality that Wine hasn't matched yet. Does somebody have a list of what can be found (and installed on a non-Windows platform) on Microsoft's site? Vincent

You don't need windows installed at all. You only need a windows license, the EULA says you must have a valid license for the computer where you're installing IE. It doesn't matter if windows is installed or not. I got this confirmed by Microsoft. Ivan.

We currently have dcom95 on the sf download page. This is a violation of the sf TOS, and a waste of bandwidth for sf. I propose we link the microsoft download page, instead of having the download on a page that should host only open source. Any objections? Ivan.

Still trying to install ZooTycoon (demo-version)

Hi, I'm still trying (won't give up) to install the ZooTycoon demo from M$. Unfortunatly I've been debugging for the last weeks and cannot seem to find the cause/error/reason it fails. I'm downloading new versions from CVS daily but only seem to find other stuff :-). The installation (copying of files) stops at the point when a new background picture should be shown during the copying. I still have the feeling it all boils down to messaging. I see that all PostMessage's are done to the main thread (0009). The PeekMessage's are all done from a relevant thread, ergo : nothing found. If I look at the debug-log the only entries at the end are thousends of PeekMessage's. I also see when debugging it on windows that the PeekMessages are done from the main thread ! Does somebody have any hint how to tackle this one ? It appears that several M$ demo programs suffer the same problem, so it could be worthwile to pursue this one. Cheers, Paul.

G'day all, Due to restrictions in my current setup I'm not subscribed to wine-devel at the moment, please cc me. This is a longstanding bug with Word97. It exists in Crossover office 2.1.0 as well and was reported in the Codeweavers database months ago. It usually results in the "style" drop down box on the far left of the toolbar blanking it's entries. I have a pretty complex default template that has a number of styles in it that all render with funky true-type fonts. When you scroll up and down this list a couple of times, wine ceases to render the entries. It used to lock up in an endless loop somewhere, but now it bombs with the below error message. I compile from CVS a couple of times a week, and subject to time I'm happy to do anything at all to assist in debugging this if it will help someone. Hi everyone, I just checked in a new update to the genpatch script. It can now send an email to wine-patches automatically given a set of local changesets. Use it like this: ./genpatch -m 5 6 7 if you did three commits, patch-5, patch-6 and patch-7 and want to send them all to wine-patches as one email. The log message and summary of the first patch will be used, and all three patches will be combined into one. You get to edit the email before it's sent and will be asked for confirmation, so you can read it over one last time. By default it will send mail to localhost - if you don't want to setup sendmail you can have "export GENPATCH_RELAY=smtp.myisp.com" in your shell init scripts to make it use a different mail relay. (Please dont flame its the truth) I recently addressed this in a discussion about ReactOS. Currently our lsass does not exist. I think we have what we have parts of the security reference monitor already implemented in ntoskrnl and most of the parts are there for winlogon and the SAM database so we need to develop the lsass services and build out the authentaticaion modules for MSV1_0 auth. One of the nice things about the design of the Windows security module is that we can make plugins at both ends so that users can be granted access either based on a "domain" concept in winlogin/Gina using plugins for LDAP and PAM or via the lsass so users can be authencated locally. It would be nice if we could work with the Winehq people on this as I think we can share the parts of the security subsystem that reside in lsass. Think of it like this (Kernel support) wineserver/ntosknrl need to both implement the security refernce montior for privlaged use of the local system resources. I dont know how much of this wineserver really needs to take in to account in the initial incarnation. (Local security subsystem) Lsass works interactivly with services and the login system and can accept all sorts of nice plugins so we are not limited to just the standard Windows authentication. As a matter of fact you could replace large parts of they authentication system if you are supper paronoid. Think of lsass as the sentry for Windows. It talks to the SRM to make sure you are not doing anything you shouldnt be. (User interaction) Interaction with the user will come from Winlogon on ReactOS or on Unix the user should already be authenticated via Linux security. This can of course be done via the authentication modules described above. Once the user I wish I could attach the nice chart from Inside Windows NT so you could see the security subsystem. Installing DCOM98 with latest CVS

Hi, I was trying to install dcom98.exe with the latest CVS and run into several errors ranging from file-not-found errors upto problems with getting the free diskspace of drives. Change to CompareStringW introduced regression in QuArK (bug #2159)

I have been investigating a regression in the functionality of QuArK, a popular level editor for Quake. The regression is filed as bug #2159. I have identified the cause of the regression as changes made to CompareStringW from revision 1.25 to revision 1.26 of wine/dlls/kernel/locale.c. I do not know how to proceed from here. The relevant modification is changing CompareStringW from calling strncmpiW/strncmpW to calling wine_compare_string. I hacked my code to call both the new and old version and print out whenever the two return different values. Calling wine_compare_string seems to have changed the behavior of comparing strings that have accent marks with strings that don't have accent marks when the NORM_IGNORECASE flag is set. I don't understand unicode collation, nor do I know how QuArK is using CompareStringW. I don't doubt that CompareStringW should call wine_compare_string, but if this is a bug in wine_compare_string, I don't know how to fix it. (Please dont flame its the truth) ----------------------------------- Looking at security from a Unix up to windows through WINE as opposed to looking down to UNIX from Windows through WINE, I have do disagree. The UNIX security system is not really "outdated" just "diffrent". One of the reasons why it's still around after 20 years is because it works. As I have never owned Windows after ME drug it's carcass across the computing landscape, I don't really quite grok windws security anyway. From futzing with an XP box at work, I don't see any real obvious way of locking down permissions on files and such. Right click/properties on a file gives me the same tierd DOS flags that haven't changed since DOS 3.0 I don't see anyting that's blocking me from deleting, say, advapi32.dll with extreame prejudice. If I went into my /lib dir and tried a rm -fr as a normal user, my system will kindly tell me to go away and play in my /home directory. The question is quite intresting. How does one "translate" a security philosophy? Do we want to give WINE the ability to hijack wsock32.dll? (wsock32.dll.so) This is often done with ISP proprietary installers, *COUGH*-AOL-*COUGH*, and various spyware apps. Has this been considered?

[PATCH?] Finally found a solution to serial port writes

The following patch is probably wrong, but it fixes my problem with WriteFile failing when writing to a COM port. The problem appears to be that NtWaitForSingleObject sends a count of '1' which results in the wine_server_call in NTDLL_wait_for_multiple_objects returning 'STATUS_USER_APC' which aborts the execution before 'call_apcs' gets called (which actually does the write). calling 'NTDLL_wait_for_multiple_objects' with count = 0 allows the 'call_apcs' function to get called, and TzMax50 actually works perfectly (along with my nasty hack to allow the menus to work) as a reminder, the COM port is opened in non-overlapped mode, and all timeouts are set to 0. (I didn't submit this to wine-patches, since i'm not at all sure it is generally correct) I can also try to write a test-case that shows this works (sort of...I can test that WriteFile returns the right result, but not that data was actually written on the serial port. I know of no way to do that without external hardware). Visual FoxPro

I have heard that there is a lot of interest in moving the WINE for Visual FoxPro forward. About a year ago, a major FoxPro developer by the name of Whil Hentzen was telling our User Group www.ocfox.org about the Visual FoxPro work you are doing with WINE. He also demonstrated Visual FoxPro working on a Linux laptop. We were all very impressed by this and anted to jump right into development but were told that the conversion or whatever you want to call it was at least 1 to 1.5 years away. This discouraged us a bit, so what we'd like to know is this: Where does the WINE work in relation to VFP 6, 76 and 8 stand now? We would like to begin some development in Linux, but need to know where the WINE work stands at this time and what the future looks like. Cecil

Hi Cecil! I went to the VFP UG in Los Angeles that week just to meet Whil, he's a nice guy. I think what he was probably talking about when he said "1 to 1.5 years away" was that Wine had some rough edges. It still does, but they're steadily being cleaned up, and Wine is getting smoother and smoother every month. You should probably give it a try. Build it from fresh sources (it's not too hard), set up a small test app in VFP, and give it a try on Wine.
