As most of you might be aware, I and Robert are progressing with a Start Menu. All the functionality is there now (except menu icons, and shell namespaces..). However, I had to write a .lnk parser for it and till date, I made it compatible ONLY with UTF-8 and thus did not require to use glibc's Unicode functions. Today, I was getting dirty with a full blown Unicode implementation and I noticed that GNU defines a wchar_t as an (unsigned long) - it's 4 bytes long, wheras a WCHAR (which is a typedefed wchar_t) is an (unsigned short) on Windows ! As a result, Unicode strings on Windows are unsigned long arrays and thus I had to convert them into glibc's own wchar_t format using a hack like this: void ConvertWCHARTo_wchar_t(const WCHAR* wszIn,wchar_t* wszOut) { if(wszIn) while(*wszOut++=*wszIn++); } and vice versa for the opposite conversion. Believe me, it works, but not always... (any body interested in debugging with the source, please ask me for it..) Any sugestions as to handle the situation please? I need to use GLibc's Unicode functions and NOT WINE's implmentation of Mutibyte...(), because I want to keep the .lnk parser in pure C++ Regards Subhobroto Sinha

No, actually I really don't want to use WineLib (then I can use COM to resolve the shortcut anyway!) I just want a method where I can use GLibc's Unicode functions on Win32 serialized data which treats wchar_t as 2 bytes long.. On Sun, 28 Dec 2003 Dimitrie O. wchar_t on GNU and Win32 - two worlds apart !

Hello The main problem is that wchar_t is 4 bytes on GNU, but 2 bytes on Windows ! Though Windows typedefs WCHAR as a wchar_t, but there a wchar_t is an "unsigned short", whereas on GNU it's "unsigned long" So WCHAR serialized data from Windows will get messed if we use native GNU data types (because then the program will read 4 bytes instead where it should have read 2 bytes!). Now you don't have to worry about WINE, as WINE defines the data type just as Windows and hence there's no problem with WINE's internationalization functions (MultiByte.. or WideChar... etc) But as I am using pure C++, I have to use GLibc's library functions which expects wchar_t to be 4 bytes long and NOT 2 bytes. So as a workaround I defined these two functions to convert from wchar_t and WCHAR to keep GNU's wcstombs() happy: inline void Convert_wchar_t_ToWCHAR(const wchar_t* wszIn,WCHAR* wszOut) { if(wszIn) while(*wszOut++=*wszIn++); else *wszOut=0; } and inline void ConvertWCHARTo_wchar_t(const WCHAR* wszIn,wchar_t* wszOut) { if(wszIn) while(*wszOut++=*wszIn++); else *wszOut=0; } As you can see, all the above two does is JUST copy the arrays from one data type to another. As we are reading the data from a .lnk (and thus the wchar_t strings are 2 byte arrays in the file..), there's no harm done, as by copying the 2 byte array into a 4 byte array, there is no loss of information. But, unfortunately, (but NOT always..), the function wcstombs fails. I have attached the binary and source alongwith a .lnk which demonstrates this problem. You just need to pass the .lnk filename to the binary on the command line, and it will spit out a few details at out about the .lnk If you test the .lnk (DAEMON_TOOLS.LNK), you will see that the program crashes in the function: unsigned int WineWorksShortcutResolver::UnicodeToANSI(const WCHAR* wszInUnicode,unsigned int uiLen,char* szOutANSI) at the GLibc function: wcstombs(..) The most confusing thing is that this does not happen in case of any other .lnk that I have (which are not many..) ! Any suggestions ? Regards Subhobroto Sinha

Error in winemine resource file ??

Hi, I am unable to build the winemine application program that in the programs directory or the 20031212 wine release. As described in the manuals I am using winemaker . However on running make winebuilder report an syntax error in En.rc at line : LANGUAGE LANG_ENGLISH, SUBLANG_ENGLISH_US Could you please tell me if winemaker or winebuilder is broken ? I am using debian (unstable) , with kernel 2.4.18 and wine-20031212. What I was really trying to do is port winpp (a numerical software) from http://www.math.pitt.edu/~bard/bardware/winppsrc.tgz. However I had a frustrating weekend trying to do this with wine maker. This application has 4 parts 3 libraries (pure C code, compiles out of box on linux) and a gui (windows based, winemaker fails to port this). I even tried to do this by editing the makefile manually. Failing at this I tried compiling a winemine and then a "hello world". None of which worked. I am perplexed. Also the winelib manual says that a spec file can be as simple as "init WinMain rcsc resource.res" . However winebuilder reports an error "expected ordinal" which is supposed to be optional ?? I would also be greatfull if you could give me a pointer on how to compile a simple "Hello World" message box application , say like (preferable by using a manually written makefile , without using winemaker) #include <windows.h> int WINAPI WinMain (HINSTANCE hInstance, HINSTANCE hPrevInstance, PSTR szCmdLine, int iCmdShow) { MessageBox (NULL, TEXT ("Hello, World"), TEXT ("Hello"), 0) ; return 0 ; } I tried to compile this with winemaker . Did you also experience that it says "Unable to set configuration key" for anything you'd try to change? instance problem in CreateWindowEx{A,W,16}

Hello Trying to run PEview.exe i found a problem. First i create a window with CreateWindowEx and pass 0 as instance. When trying to read the instance with GetWindowLong(hWnd,GWL_HINSTANCE) # Wine returns 0 as passed to the function. # Win 98 returns 0x400000 which is what GetModuleHandle( NULL ) gives me. For the CreateWindowEx{A,W} it can easily be fixed by adding this two lines at the beginning of the function: if (instance == 0) instance = GetModuleHandleW( NULL ); But For CreateWindowEx16 i'm not sure how to check. But i had a look at some code in class.c, where similar checks are performed and constructed following: if (!HINSTANCE_32(instance)) instance = HINSTANCE_32(GetModuleHandle16(NULL)); So does the code for CreateWindowEx16 look right? Hi all, Well, I've pulled down a CVS copy of wine and I'm currently at work overhauling the API documentataion. I do have some nitpicks. 1) I'm using the HTML documentation (make doc-html) to check my work. An issue I kind of have with this is an index.html isn't generated. This would be most trivial as all it has to be is an alphabetical link to a.html, b.html, c.html etc...unless there is an index and I'm not seeing it. Also, in the lettered indexes, a delemiter, like a <hr> tag between the API function calls and the dll names would be nice. My perl-foo is quite weak. I'll see what I can hack togeather myself... -Joshua

Hello, I've just started to work my way through your Wine User Guide. I'm not a complete newbie (I've been playing with Linux for a while on a dual boot PC), but I'm certainly not a specialist. It looks like my RedHat 8.0 default installation came with Wine-20020605. I searched for the check & configuration tools you recommend on pages 16 and 17, but they were missing. I found the winecheck script, but that returned an appallingly low score of only 1.78% after I copied the default config file on a freshly created /.wine directory. So I'm now trying to figure out wether I try to get the configuration right for the existing default Wine installation or just throw it away and restart from scratch with the latest source code. So far your user guide is quite helpful, but it looks like I have a loooong way to go to a working Wine setup. Mouse cursor doesn't switch correctly...

Hi folks, I may be asking for a needle in the haystack, but: While playing Warcraft III under Wine, I noticed something odd. Warcraft uses both a hand as a mouse cursor as a target (circle with cross in the middle) icon. In ordinary Win32, these two seem to switch. Under wine, however, only the target cursor is visible. That means that I as a user have to click to right below to the spot i would click intuivily, since I see a target, but the program thinks I'm using the hand as a pointer. I would like to solve this issue by creating some kinda patch, but I have no idea what might be going wrong... Do you have any clues? Grtz, Robert

After abstaining from commercial games for a couple of years I found three Windows games under the Christmas tree this time. I was a bit nervous as I no longer have a working Windows partition. I only tried one game (Esacape From Monkey Island) so far and it was a shattering success. I did have to read some Wine docs and fiddle around with settings for half an hour, but after that the game runs flawlessly in its OpenGL mode. I'm skipping further details[1] as this mail's main purpose is to *thank* you all for the great piece of work that Wine is! Wine/Agent freezes with deadkeys

I' m running KDE 3.1.4 and as keyboard I have the US w/deadkeys activated to get german umlauts. I noticed frequent freezes in Agent when I typed new messages and now I know when it happens. I have to press the ' or " key in order to get accented chracters or Umlaute. When I press this key Agent freezes, I can see a defunct wine prozess and I have to kill the wineserver. I haven' t seen anything on the console though. No errormessage or nothing. Frustration

Useful document on critical sections

Hi, I found this article: http://msdn.microsoft.com/msdnmag/issues/03/12/CriticalSections/ There are two points of interest that we don't seem to cover: * RtlpWaitForCriticalSection will NOT block if the process is shutting down and the wait is on the loader lock. I've seen a fair few times when an app deadlocks on shutdown on the loader lock - could this be the cause? * The loader lock is stored at offset 0xA0 in the PEB. I doubt this is important, but now the info is published murphies law says one day an app will try and get to it directly. thanks -mike

More exec-shield problems

Hi, When /proc/sys/kernel/exec-shield is set to 1, the StarCraft installer crashes. (it doesn't matter what the -randomize option is set to). It appears then that exec-shield screws things up in more subtle ways than just stopping us mapping the binary. The details of the crash are that the game allocates some memory using RtlAllocateHeap, uses MultiByteToWideStr to fill it, then calls GetStringTypeW on the memory, which crashes with an access violation. There is a way to link wine such that execshield will be switched off, some linker flag. Does anybody know how to integrate that with the Wine build system? thanks -mike

This is with both CVS head from today and with the 2003-12-12 snapshot tarball. Anyone got any ideas? iain

This is hilarious... I just built wine-20031212 from source (using tools/wineinstall), and... all the menus are in Thai. Even if I run winefile, or a real copy of notepad.exe. Even if I set LANG=C before running. WTF? - Dan

Problems with Ultima Online: Age of Shadows [Textbox glitch + out of memory error]

Hi all! I was trying to run Ultima Online: Age of Shadows (latest patchlevel after autopatch), but I have some problems. The first problem is actually a glitch, in autopatcher, when the textbox is moved at end, the text is hide, because it moves as first character of the textbox the after-the-last character of the text in it. The second is a big problem: when starting the client, it gives an out of memory error. I can't find where the problem is because I don't know for sure which trace channel has the functions for memory statistics. After reading about the winamp3 source code release I've been interested in working with winelib. I edited the Makefile to just use rsrc.rc as winemine2_exe_RC_SRCS and this let me get further and build the standalone app but when I remove the binary resource files like winemine.ico and the *.bmp files these aren't rebuilt. Extracting them manually from rsrc.rc with wrc works however. Are the docs out of date on this? Bug in winemaker? Chris

Easy IE installer script

Hi everyone, I thought I'd let the list know that I wrote an easy IE installer program, for those times when only explorer will do. On a Wine CVS build, no windows install, it installs pretty much perfectly, and it does run (stability is so so :). It'll also put a nice menu entry in your menus if your desktop uses the standard mechanism. The installer program contains a few things that may or may not be redistributable - for instance, it contains MSVCRT40.DLL and MFC40.DLL, both of which are available for free from dll-files.com so it seemed to make sense to include them. It also includes the Tahoma font, which IE installs anyway, but I install it first because current Wine seems to enjoy picking BitStream Vera Mono which doesn't look too good and causes UI layout problems. You can get it from here: http://bylands.dur.ac.uk/~mh/install-ie6.run Just download and run it, like so: sh install-ie6.run It contains a Linux Winelib DSO program (for figuring out your linux windows drive path), so may or may not work on other platforms. Do people think this should be linked to from WineHQ? It's a pretty common question in #winehq. enjoy, thanks -mike

Console problem

Hello I'm trying to get the freeware version of IDA (console) working, but if i run it in wine it just hangs. If i run it with winedbg it works fine. I found out that the problem is that AllocConsole is never called for the application if it is being run from wine. But since IDA runs in the console subsystem it should get a console according to MSDN. MSDN says: The CONSOLE subsystem is for a Win32 character-mode application. Console applications are given a console by the operating system. So here is the technical side of the problem: AllocConsole should get called from process_attach() ->dlls/kernel/kernel_main.c:180 So the external variable main_create_flags tells us if we need a console. This variable is set from process_init() ->dlls/kernel/process.c:634 This function itself performs the server call init_process() which returns 0 in create_flags from server/process.c:356 So the problem is that there is no startup_info -> server call returns 0 -> no console for the first process. Setting process->create_flags = CREATE_NEW_CONSOLE from init_process() call fixes the problem BUT with this winedbg starts up in a small ugly windows console that is not resizeable :-/ Anyone knows how to fix this?
