Hi, Just incase anybody is interested, here is a regression test for mailslots. There's not much point to include it into Wine until we support mailslots properly (which I'm working on). .def files in Debian packages

Hi, is there a reason that the for the Wine .dll.so libraries are not contained in the Wine Debian packages, especially libwine-dev? I mean, if I develop Winelib applications, I am going to need them anyway... Thanks for your help. Regards, Martin

attaching or inlining? what to do when you're stuck with a stupid mail client???

Hi Dimi, I'm deeply sorry about that and I understand your frustrations for I have frustrations of my own using my mail client. The problem is that I have no other choice but to use Notes as a mail client for external emails at my company and Notes really screws up attachments and there's no way to configure it. Also, it wraps line longer than 70 characters, so inlining some of my patches will result in bogus patches. Then again, there's no way to configure it to disable line wrapping. And trust me, I've tried.... So what I'm gonna do in the future is inline patches that won't get line wrapped and attach the others the way I use too. Hopefully, most of them will be inlined. Hi folks, Oleg has been doing a lot of good work, and we are now down to 73 HeapReAlloc and 73 non-HeapReAlloc entries to review. I'm still not sure how the comctl32.ReAlloc() should behave, any help in getting that resolved would be highly appreciated. IShellLink should be all you need for retrieving information from a .lnk file although it seems currently broken somehow, according to some report a few days ago on wine-devel. It's true, winesetuptk is very usable (It's a wizard), and winecfg look more complicated than anything in windows. I did read that some very simple programs could run without a windows like filesystem. As winecfg is a winelib app, I suppose it may be possible to run it without a windows like filesystem, so wine could look for a registry (Winecfg works with a registry, not a config file), if it doesn't find it, it starts a wizard-like version of winecfg that allowsthe users to get wine ready to run, like winesetuptk does. > The way winesetuptk does it seems less likely to result in mistakes by users. I think it could help alot. The first thing you may want to try and do is run your win32 application under WINE on a x86 linux box. If it works there then it should recompile as a Winelib application. The issue then becomes does Wine and Winelib work on Sparc. ATM I think the port is incompleate although we did have some people at Sun who were working on it and Wine does run under Solaris for x86. You can try and port your Win32 application if you can get a WINE to build for Solaris on Sparc. Another option would be to look at what functions Wines wininet.dll imports and see if you can develop a native implementation of wininet that sits on top of the Unix TCP/IP implementation rather than on Wine Winsock. Most people would say it's a "For geeks only" thing. You can start winesetuptk without knowing what a shell is, and you can set it up with a few clicks of the mouse, it's usually used by people using binary packages, you know, those people that only use computers as tools and don't know/care about source code and tweaking configurations, and that could never use wineinstall.

I don't think winesetup needs big changes; I'm still not sure about what is broken. The attached file updates the registry shipped with winesetuptk to the current winedefault.reg, and also updates the dlls that are created when making a fake windows installation. As I've said, I'm not sure of what is broken, but if what has to go isn't determined by winesetuptk while running (Like the AppDefaults) then it's just a question of removing whatever has to go from the cfg_wine_without_windows.ini and/or cfg_wine_with_windows.ini. If anything else has to be changed, then Vincent should tell Alex what exactly has to change, so Alex can get on with it. This is presumably the quickest way of getting a working winesetuptk again, as he know Tcl/Tk very well. It's not worth wasting too much time on it, as were going to trash it soon, it doesn't matter if it can't tweak all aspects of the config file, it just has to make a working configuration for the user, that will often have to tweak the file by hand anyway until winecfg is ready.

CVS issues

I updated CVS on 10/8 and Lotus notes worked fine. I updated on 10/12 and now Notes gives me a Date not initialized error and all the date and times in the program are all mangled. I am rolling back to 10/8 Kevin

Most normal people (Users) don't want to edit config files or use a shell. That's why most people don't use linux. Winecfg isn't complete, winesetuptk will go soon, but in the mean time it's the best way to configure wine. I get emails all the time from people thanking me for putting winesetuptk on sourceforge, it's had a lot of downloads, and I don't think we can remove it yet. As soon as winecfg is ready, I'll hide winesetuptk (That won't work anyway because wine won't read the config file). Until then, winesetuptk is the only easy way of configuring wine, and I have no intention of telling users "Go and edit the config file and add this and remove that and make a system directory inside the windows directory that's in your fake c:\ drive that the config file has to point to..." when I can just say "Install winesetuptk, start it, and follow the on-screen instructions". I don't see how such a good level of usability can hurt.

Some time ago (about 2 years ago now), Codeweavers developped winesetuptk, a configuration tool for Wine. It is now listed with other Wine related files on sf.net. The problem is that the tool hasn't really followed Wine development (for example, removal of $VAR-style variables from config file), and some users experience problems because of that. It'd be better to not list it on our download page because of its staleness. OTOH, I know that Mike et al.'s winecfg is not ready yet for prime-time use. Still, having a working, commented text config file to work with rather than an obsolete GUI tool is preferable IMHO. So I'd recommend the removal (or hiding) of it if nobody steps up to update it to current Wine practices. Vincent

Hi all, Some games that worked pretty well in Wine (like, for example, Tomb Raider 3) are now failing with latest CVS due to : Unhandled exception: privileged instruction in 32-bit code (0x0048e2e1). He came home right away and they drove together to the boys school and picked him up. Little did they suspect that where the money came from was more shocking than actually finding it in the closet. As it turns out, the boy had been sending out, via E-mail, a type of "EBOOK" to E-mail addresses that he obtained off the Internet. Everyday after school for the past 2 months, he had been doing this right on his computer in his bedroom. "I just got the E-mail one day and I figured what the heck, I put my name on it like the instructions said and I started sending it out", says the clever 15-year-old. The E-mail letter listed 5 addresses and contained instructions to send one $5 dollar bill to each person on the list, then delete the address at the top and move the others addresses down, and finally to add your name to the top of the list. The letter goes on to state that you would receive several thousand dollars in five-dollar bills within 2 weeks if you sent out the letter with your name at the top of the 5-address list. "I get junk E-mail all the time,and really did not think it was going to work", the boy continues. Within the first few days of sending out the E-mail, the Post Office Box that his parents had gotten himfor his video-game magazine subscriptions began to fill up with not magazines, but envelopes containing $5 bills. "About a week later I rode [my bike] down to the post office and my box had 1 book and about 300 envelops stuffed in it. There was also a yellow slip that said I had to go up to the [post office] counter. I thought I was in trouble or something (laughs)". He goes on, "I went up to the counter and they had a whole box of more mail for me. I had to ride back home and empty out my backpack because I could not carry it all". Over the next few weeks, the boy continued sending out the E-mail. "The money just kept coming in and Ijust kept sorting it and stashing it in the closet, barely had time for my homework". He had also been riding his bike to several of the banks in his area and exchanging the $5 bills for twenties, fifties and hundreds. "I didn't want the banks to get suspicious so I kept riding to different banks with like five thousand at a time in my backpack. I would usually tell the lady at the bank counter that my dad had sent me in to exchange the money and he was outside waiting for me. One time the lady gave me a really strange look andtold me that she would not be able to do it for me and my dad would have to come in and do it, but I just rode to the next bank down the street (laughs)." Surprisingly, the boy did not have any reason to be afraid. The EBOOKing news team examined and investigated the so-called "chain-letter" the boy was sending out and found that it was not a chain-letter at all. In fact, it was completely legal according to US Postal and Lottery Laws, Title 18, Section 1302 and 1341, or Title 18, Section 3005 in the US code, also in the code of federal regulations, Volume 16, Sections 255 and 436, which state a product or service must be exchanged for money received. Every five-dollar bill that he received contained a little note that read,"Please send me EBOOK number XYX".This simple note made the letter legal because he was exchanging a service (A EBOOK on how-to) for a five-dollar fee. Hi Alexandre, I understand your idea and it makes perfect sense. Maybe the description of my patch wasn't clear enough. And maybe I shouldn't have changed SetTextColor and SetBkColor (that were actually the only callbacks that were well implemented on both the driver side and the the GDI). But if you look at most of the other callback implementations in the EMF and WMF drivers (SetTextAlign for example), you'll see that they only return TRUE or FALSE (the return value from WriteRecord) and not what the corresponding API function should return. So, the code that handles the callback return value doesn't interpret the return code correctly. There's clearly something wrong with some callbacks though. We just need to agree on a convention and respect it in all driver callbacks... So what if I regenerate a patch that looks like this in the case of SetTextAlign. Start menu items

Hi, Sorry, but I'm not a member of this list, and I'm not into developing Wine. Though I read - with great pleasure - the weekly news on the website and saw a quote of Mike McCormack saying (or writing): "For starters we could just use the 'Start Menu' directory, but you miss out on things like Outlook Express and Internet Explorer's Icons, because there's no .lnk file for those... they are created by a shell namespace extension (I think :)." It is not correct that there isn't a .lnk file for these two programs in the Start Menu. Only on the Windows desktop these two are created with some namespace extension of some kind (with some registry values as I recall). In the Start Menu and the Quick Launch they are represented with a .lnk file as every other shortcut. Don't know if this information matter at all, but now you know :-) Regards Chris Hansen

I am representing the board of the contract award and monitoring committe of the Zambian Ministry of Mining and Resources. But in the course of negotiation, the contract was awarded to a Bulgarian contractor at the cost of US$144,500,000.00 (One hundred and Forty-four Million, Five Hundred Thousand United States Dollars) to my benefit unknown to the contractor. This contract has been satisfactorily executed and inspected as the Bulgarian firm is presently securing payment from my Ministry, where our Board is in-charge of all foreign contract payment approval. As a civil servant still in active government service, I am forbidden by law to operate an account outside the shores of Zambia. Hence this message to you seeking your assistance so as to enable me present your private/company account details as a beneficiary of contractual claims alongside that of the Bulgarian contractor, to enable me transfer the difference of US$35,500,000.00 (Thirty-five Million, Five Hundred Thousand United States Dollars) into your provided account. On actualisation, the fund will be disbursed as stated below. 1. 20% of the fund will be for you as beneficiary 2. 80% of the fund will be for Us. All logistics are in place and all modalities worked out for a smooth actualisation of the transaction within the next few working days of commencement.
