The client(s) would be a gnome vfs library, the KDE equivilent, or perhaps even plugins for other desktops. To make it easier, i guess you could just make the windows daemon enumerate the .lnk files in Windows/Start Menu first, then once you have that working, make it query the shell instead. The appropriate code from Gnome to look at is in the gnome cvs: :pserver:anonymous@anoncvs.gnome.org:/cvs/gnome the module names are: gnome-vfs gnome-vfs-extras gnome-panel I was looking at xml-rpc for the protocol to use on the pipe, but that might be a bit of an overkill, and it could be easier to write the protocol yourself. http://www.xmlrpc.com/directory/1568/implementations If you are going to use xml-rpc, make sure to choose an implementation that is LGPL compatible. This is the last chance for someone in Europe to volunteer to organize it in their neck of the woods... wine & ccache

Hi folks, Just wanted to let people know that ccache works rather well with wine. On my lowly 600MHz Pentium box, it takes about 1h to compile, after a make clean. Second time through it takes about 1/4h to do the same thing, 75% faster! (As an added bonus, CPU utilization dropped from 86% to 60%) A nice thing would be to also be able to generate a top Makefile that knows all about the project, and we no longer do the recursive descent. It takes my box almost 20 seconds to do a 'make -s' after a full build. Not sure how doable this is, but I'm sure that things would be way faster if everything would be in one big Makefile. Probably I'm just going to end up buying a faster box before this gets implemented though :) How long does it take to do a 'time make -s' after a full build on one of the beefier boxes? -- Dimi.

Start menu (especially for Alexandre Julliard)

OK people, As I understand (from the explanation by Russell Howe (thanx:-))), there is a script called wineshelllink that is supposed to install the created start menu items in your KDE menu. First of all: this script does not seem to do anything on my installation (Slackware 9). Are there known problems with this script? Second: from looking at the script it seems that this menu is not synchronized with the actual contents of your start menu, which would seem more fancy to me. Because Windows users will be aquainted with the fact that the Start menu directory actually contains the contents of the start menu. What I would propose is a system in which the contents of the wine menu would be in continuous synchronization with your start menu. That would mean: * Less error prone coding (no need for extra scripts etc) * More forward functionality (moving in the folder will actually result in moving in the menu as well) * Better support for applications (links that are not written through api calls will actually show up as well) * Ability to copy links between Windows installation and Wine installation Wouldn't you agree such a system would be better? Trouble installing MS SQLserver 2000 Client Tools

Hi, I've been trying to install the SQLserver Client Tools with Wine 20030911 (on Redhat 9). The setup process fails near the beginning because it cannot install MDAC ("Setup is installing Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) ..."). It exits with a dialog that says "Installation of the Microsoft Data Access Components package failed. (-1)". The following console messages are displayed: fixme:process:CreateProcessA (F:\standard\x86\other\sqlredis.exe,...): CREATE_SEPARATE_WOW_VDM ignored fixme:win32:PE_CreateModule Security directory ignored fixme:process:CreateProcessA (E:\IXP001.TMP\setupre.exe,...): NORMAL_PRIORITY_CLASS ignored fixme:string:MultiByteToWideChar MB_USEGLYPHCHARS not supported fixme:string:MultiByteToWideChar MB_USEGLYPHCHARS not supported fixme:string:MultiByteToWideChar MB_USEGLYPHCHARS not supported fixme:string:MultiByteToWideChar MB_USEGLYPHCHARS not supported I can't install MDAC standalone (MDAC_TYP.EXE from microsoft's website) either, but I don't think that matters because SQLserver setup will always try to install MDAC. Note that I have IE 5.5SP2 installed, and I think DCOM98 (I can't tell if that failed or succeeded) according to instructions in the WineHQ appdb. Wine is emulating "win98". Any hints? Thanks

Fix for bug 640 - moving thin frames leaves mess

Hello! I've made a patch for http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=640 I'm sending it here because I don't 100% sure it's ready for wine-patches. But the patch fixes an important problem and I don't want it to be unnoticed. On certain versions of XFree86 (4.2.1 + Raveon 7000/VE), focus rectangles are painted in white. Also, windows with thin frames (including all popup windows) create mess when dragged, except in when managed mode. It appears that GXxor value used in graphics/x11drv/graphics.c is misinterpreted - instead of xoring the background with the pen color, the pen color is painted as is. Another xoring doesn't hide the rectangle, thus creating mess of white dotted rectangles. The radical fix would be to avoid GXxor completely, but I'm leaving it to gurus and I'm not sure if it's needed. Fortunately, there is a correct and justifiable fix on the higher level. The focus rectangle (e.g. the rectangle around active buttons) should be painted using the system text color. Xoring this color with background is wrong. Even on systems where it works, it changes the color from black to dark gray (light gray xor white), although not too much to notice it. DrawFocusRect() has been changed to use R2_COPYPEN mode. On the other hand, draw_moving_frame() should use xor, so using DrawFocusRect() is wrong there, once the later is fixed. PatBlt() with PATINVERT works just fine with buggy XFree86 and it's already used for thick frames. The patch uses a checkered brush to imitate the dotted line. The result is very close to what I see on Windows 2000 - dotted line of one pixel wide using inverted color. In fact, the frame seems to be redrawn faster and smoother than without the patch on the system without the bug. -- Regards, Pavel Roskin

Since I was using precompiled RPMs from freshrpms.net when doing the first try, I switched to 0.9.7 sources. Same result. Hi list, to translate the wine dlls to italian, my idea was to just get the strings from a disassembled m$ dll. Also, the text strings in wine dlls are a little different here and there respect to windows, and I was thinking that it would be a good idea to uniform them, can I do this or would it be a DMCA violation (Not that I care about the DMCA but the main cvs server is in the US)?

The anti patent petition was a success, the EU law approved on the 24th has been changed so much sine the original version that software freedom is preserved, so decss will stay legal in europe, thanks to all that signed the petition. Hello Aleksey Ge and I discussed trying to attend LinuxTax in Germany. The only problem with this is that I think my wife may be due at the same time as LinuxTag!!! I would still like for us to try and do a conf in Germany though. Vizzini suggested alternating ReactOS confs in the US and EU every other year so maybe we could partner with the WINE project to do a join confernce once a year? I still would like to do St. Petersburg in Feb. I think I could get a good deal on it - probably just for the cost of catering. For anyone who skis I can get cheap lift tickets. Likewise, I can get a deal on lodging, but it wouldn't be that great ($80 USD /night or so). However, I don't think Colorado is as convenient as Minneapolis and the few $$$ saved on facilities probably wouldn't justify it. The one nice thing about Minneapolis is the major airport closeby - Northwest is the major carrier there and they partner with KLM. A quick look on Travelocity shows tickets for under $600 USD (under 500 Euro?) for airfare from various European cities to Minneapolis. Despite what Jeremy says about Minneapolis, I don't think anyone from Europe will be surprised by cold temperatures. If you're used to seeing snow on the ground it's not much different.. except for the times when your eyelids freeze shut. Get calling stack after application crash

Hi folks, How can i get the calling stack of program after its crash ? Running the program in winedbg doesn't give me anything. Using --debugmsg +xxx ... doesn't give me useful info. I give up with the +relay solution because it generates too big file. Thanks in advance. Stephan

winebuild & Winelib

I am sorry, but I'm going to ask this without RTF{M,C}: 1. Building Winelib DLLs We need the .spec file, I know. But can we also use a .def file instead (without relay support, of course). My understanding is that the extra information in the .spec file is needed only for relay debugging... If we are to ask people for extra work to create Winelib DLLs, I think we can get away with a .def file, but not with a .spec file (no tool support in Windows, etc.) 2. Linking Winelib apps with Windows (PE) DLLs Is this possible? We will not be able to use the original import libs, we should be able to make do with a .def file. Is this supported by winebuild? I am trying to understand this a bit better for (a) winegcc support for building DLLs (b) updating the Winelib docs Thanks! -- Dimi.

regression - display mode detection - more exanples

I don't know why I didn't think of giving you more examples of what the last change of resolution changing did but here they are: gta2 manager now detects these resolutions twice: 640x480 800x600 1024x786 1152x864 1280x960 and the 1400x1050 4 times (This manager only displays resolutions without dept) Gta2 itself now crashes but I am not sure if that is related or not p.s. gta2 = grand theft auto 2 as I said Unreal Tournament 2003 no longer finds any valid display modes (I the traces to some of you and to wine-devel) dam, I thought I had more games installed... and you have the Max Payne problem from Sylvain Petreolle (http://www.winehq.org/hypermail/wine-devel/2003/09/0948.html) I really think this should either be fixed somehow or reverted (if you want more broken reports you can release a version :) ) Sorry I didn't find anymore test cases for now, If you want more traces just ask, Hatky. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Script to compile Wine programs on Windows

Hello! The attached script makes it possible to compile many programs from Wine under Windows. The only software needed on Windows is Cygwin with MinGW libraries and some other utilities (flex, bison). Simply run setup.exe from www.cygwin.com and make sure to select MinGW development tools. Then get Wine sources, and run the attached script in the Cygwin shell while in the Wine top-level source directory. There is one minor fix that needs to be applied to the sources to fix compatibility with MinGW headers (run autoconf and autoheader after applying): http://www.winehq.org/hypermail/wine-patches/2003/09/att-0347/01-spawnvp.di… The configure script is rather slow in Cygwin, so it's instructed not to create makefiles, only config.h. Then the necessary libraries are compiled. The next step is to link wrc, the Wine resource compiler. Once wrc is ready, the script starts compiling programs. I cannot get windres to compile most Wine's resources directly, so there are compiled from *.rc to *.res by wrc and then from *.res to *.o by windres. Also, in windows server 2k3 I can't overwrite that file, as there's that file restore service, I don't know if I can kill/disamble it, I'll give it a go (Let me know if there is a way to get rid of this great feature). The solution may be to get the wine winver to work correctly on windows without displaying something like Wine 20030911 Copyright 2003 Microsoft Corporation Then it could be named winever and placed in %systemroot%\system32\winever.exe and wine programs could call it directly when running on windows.

Hi people, It is said that there is some kind of start menu that should appear for Wine. I myself am using Slackware 9/KDE and on my system it does not show up though. Furthermore, I do not think the wine start menu, if it exists, is currently being synchronized with the files in the Start Menu directory (Windows\\Start Menu) that Wine has. Since I am not exactly sure what already exists, I don't know if it's a good idea to make a application (kicker applet?) that reads the .lnk files from the start menu dir and makes a menu out of that, so people can easily access Windows executables. A great advantage of synchronizing with the Start Menu would be that after every installation the executables will appear on your desktop as people are used to from using Windows. This might make Wine more intuitive to use... So, my question is: To what extend does wine already do something like this, and, moreover, how should I turn that on . winetest.exe no results

I'm back after a long time just lurking. I was realy excited about the conformance testing program. Since I am the IT Administrator of a company that uses a wide variety of windows versions (no NT3 sorry) I will be able to submit a good number of tests results. The problem I have under windows 98 is that the zip file found here http://afavant.elte.hu/~wferi/wine/ produces an results.txt file but the (newer) exe found here http://vmlinux.org/jakov/Wine/ locks up without producing any output (even when redirected >). Both tests freeze at the same place. That is they both lock up during the console test (kernel32_crosstest.exe console) the test produces a blue "abc" in the top right hand corner of my dos prompt box and requires that I "Ctrl-C" to get out. Max Payne & resolution detection

To continue the resolution detection problems story, today comes Max Payne. My X resolution is 1280x1024x16. If run under desktop mode with a size of 640x480, Max Payne sees correctly video modes (640, 800, 1024 and 1280) but fails with a BadWindow error. Since this error is usually corrected by disabling desktop mode, I comment it into .wine/config. Now Max Payne sees only 1280x1024, all other modes arent listed anymore. Keyboard problems

Hi When running eg. notepad with latest wine cvs, wine doesn't correctly find out my Finnish keyboard. Instead it is using Latin American keyboard because it's getting the highest score when X11DRV_KEYBOARD_DetectLayout is choosing keymap. I've looked in wine/dlls/keyboard.c and noticed that in Latin American keymap there are not many Alt-Gr characters. Every Alt-Gr charater produces an error and lowers the score of even right keymap and that is why wrong keymap is selected. So it seems like there is a problem detecting the keys right. Any thoughts? DLL Overrides and Winecfg

I have recently noticed the large number of Stub DLLs being Added to wine with minimal functionality, for example Msi, MSHTML (they don't work for me in any case). These additions have not for the most part been accompanied with a new "native, builtin" entry in samples/config. Due to the forthcoming removal of the config file, i assume this functionality will be added to winedefault.reg. This is less than ideal for people who track CVS or install from source with each new release since, as before, their registry will not be automatically updated to match winedefault.reg. Is there a mechanism for Wine dlls to specify a preferred override automatically (e.g. where the built-in DLL holds no functionality, whereas the native one works correctly, and if not how difficult would it be to implement this, (e.g By adding the entries to the registry in DllRegisterServer or some similar mechanism) -- Matthew (Jabba The Hutt) Davison <m.davison(a)virgin.net>

I.e. it's quite a fair play to assume that the user has correctly configured the system to work with his/her locale. That's exactly my point. If the user didn't correctly configure his/her locale wrt. The iocharset of the drive, then trouble's ahead. So, we can either suggest that it's up to the user to do it correctly (and in that case CP_UNIXCP is just fine for internal handling) ; or we don't (and this was, to my understanding, the need of the codepage option in drive configuration). Basically my question could be rephrased as do we really need this option, or can we remove it. My first (dumb) reaction was if it's in there, it means we need it for some cases. But, I don't want to support this codepage option for no real need, so if no one objects, we could remove it. A+
