Direct access to LPT1

I'm playing around with a program that controls a small "design cutter" - it's basically a plotter that connects via the parallel port. There is some Windows CAD software that knows about the plotter and sends commands to it, as far as I can tell in one of two ways: 1) Through a printer driver. It doesn't seem too bothered about the details of the driver though. I'm assuming that one would normally use a generic, text-only Windows driver. This method, apparently, has the advantage of the driver buffering the output 2) The second method is a direct connection to LPT1. With Wine, in the first case I get a message in a dialog box saying the call to "StartDocPrinter" failed and fixme:winspool:StartDocPrinterA (hPrinter=0x1, Level=0x1, pDocInfo=0x408a28dc): stub to stdout. In the second case I get a dialog saying "LPT1 was not found" and fixme:dosfs:DOSFS_OpenDevice device open L"LPT1" not supported (yet) err:file:CreateFileW Couldn't open device L"LPT1"! to stdout. Is this a config issue? I'm assuming that is should be easier for me to get the second method working.

I also would help, except I'm so short on time I know I wouldn't actually do anything, so I won't volunteer... I've been lurking around these lists for about 4 or so years now, so I've got a bit of an idea about some of the stuff that's happened. Maybe in the future I'll lend a hand. If I recall correctly, the 'history of wine' has come up a few times, so there may already be some material that could be used. Well, it works, finally. No more crashes/hangs :) That is - sort of. Unfortunately, it's a bit too slow to be usable. A few wild stabs in the dark and some timing traces showed the culprit to be LoadTypeLibEx: trace:ole:LoadTypeLibEx File L"C:\\windows\\system\\SHDOCVW.DLL" index 1 trace:ole:LoadTypeLibEx returns 00000000, in 15 milliseconds trace:ole:LoadTypeLibEx File L"C:\\windows\\system\\SHDOCVW.DLL" index 1 (hmmmm, we load it again?) trace:ole:LoadTypeLibEx returns 00000000, in 46 milliseconds (odd, slower than last time) trace:ole:LoadTypeLibEx File L"C:\\windows\\system\\mshtml.tlb" index 1 trace:ole:LoadTypeLibEx returns 00000000, in 1208 milliseconds (over a second parsing the type library? well, maybe it is quite large) trace:ole:LoadTypeLibEx File L"C:\\windows\\system\\mshtml.tlb" index 1 trace:ole:LoadTypeLibEx returns 00000000, in 6689 milliseconds (almost 7 seconds to parse the type lib a second time!?!) trace:ole:LoadTypeLibEx File L"C:\\windows\\system\\mshtml.tlb" index 1 trace:ole:LoadTypeLibEx returns 00000000, in 42139 milliseconds Waaaaaaah, 42 seconds! There's a big source of the sluggishness. So, a few questions that I can chew on tomorrow: * Shouldn't typelib loading be cached somewhere? Reparsing typelibs like this seems rather wasteful. * Why on earth would the time taken go up so massively on each run? * Where abouts in the typelib parsing could the speed hit be? Pretty clearly no typelib is going to be so complex it takes an Athlon 1200 almost a minute to parse, there is a nasty bug there somewhere. thanks -mike

Invoke with IDispatch* params

Hi, more questions (i'll master COM yet :) HRESULT IWebBrowser2::get_Document(IDispatch **ppDisp); invocation of this method/property fails, for some reason. I'm not sure why yet, but I don't understand how this is marshalled. Presumably, OLE Automation provides a ppDisp and then dereferences it back to IDispatch which is then marshalled. In ITypeInfo::Invoke, there is this code: if (tdesc->vt == VT_PTR) tdesc = tdesc->u.lptdesc; when looping over the arguments (?). So, it seems that this code is responsible for dereferencing the pointer, but it only does it once. Shouldn't this be a loop to dereference the arg as many times as needed? I feel that's wrong even as I write it, but I'm not sure how this part should work. As it is, tdesc->vt ends up being (correctly) VT_DISPATCH but pVarResult doesn't seem to be changed....

question about icon,bitmap,cursor resources in user.dll

I notice that some of the icons, cursors and bitmaps used in the user of wine (for example, the 4 icons used in message boxes) look just like the windows ones. How can wine have them looking just like the windows ones and not violate microsoft copyright? Or are they copyright violations but WINE just hasnt been sued yet?

I need card back bitmaps

Before I continue with cards.dll work, I need card back bitmaps, specificly: back 53, a diamond cross-hatch background. This one should have black lines on a white background, its used as an indicator for where cards can go but where there are no cards yet. (e.g. the empty ace piles in solitare) back 67 big red X on a dark green background (the green is RGB 0 128 0, it has to match the background used in e.g. solitare, the red should be a bright red) 68 big bright green O on a dark green background (green is as above, other green should be bright green) Basicly, I need them to not be a potential MS copyright violation but at the same time I need them to look "similar" to the MS ones so that they dont look out of place in solitare and stuff. These 3 are important because cards.dll has a 3 special drawing modes that draws them.

I think the code should not try to marshal/unmarshal the data in rpcrt4, but should use the PSOAInterface code in oleaut32 (according to the registry entry for Interfaces\[CLSID of IWebBrowser2]\ProxyStubClsid32). It would probably be best to find out why this is not happening (maybe by moving some oleaut32 code to rpcrt4?). Rob

Hello everyone, I built a ping.dll.so from windows source codes using winemaker, (these source codes works under MS visual studio, also windows version dll works find under wine.)I did in this way: 1) put all the windows version source files-pingdll.h,pingdll.c,pingdll.dll,pingdll.dsp in one directory; 2) %winemaker --lower-uppercase . 3) %./configure --with-wine-includes=/usr/local/include/wine/windows 4) %make Aftter ping.dll.so is generated, I put it under /usr/local/bin/wine/ , also change my wine config (.wine/config) by adding "pingdll" = "builtin, native"; When I run my application under wine: %wine ./ping.exe (pingdll work for ping.exe) the program terminates... when I use winedbg to run it, there's error message shown there: .... ... ... ... I see that all the wine dlls put the bitmaps in the resource file directly... Whats the best way to do it for a 32 bit wine dll (in this case cards.dll) amd where can I find a program to do it for me?

Do the winelib and winegcc tools and so on define WIN32?

If not, they should (IMHO). Any compiler that provides windows.h & friends and proporting to act like a win32 compiler (i.e. accepting win32 code and so on) should be defining WIN32. Testing #ifdef WIN32 is the easiest way to say "if we are building on windows do x, if not do y" And, for all practical purposes (from the perspective of source code anyway), building on winelib should be the same as building on windows (isnt that the point of winelib) MingW, Visual C++ and Cygwin with -mno-cygwin (which is basicly MingW) all define WIN32. And I would assume that Watcom, Borland and others probobly do as well although I dont have those to check.

Visual Sourcesafe works much better than last year...

Last time I tried running Microsoft Visual Sourcesafe's gui tools under Wine (six months or a year ago), it had Z-ordering and/or visibility problems, and was only partially usable. Now those problems are all gone, and ssexp.exe is from what I can tell quite functional (if bloody slow over smbfs). It still doesn't update the journal with your changes, so the ss admin will think you're sneaking in changes by magic, but progress is progress. which of these should I work on?

After looking at all the things windows provides, I have identified the folowing possible programs that I could write for the wine project. Some of them are usefull for WINE itself and some of them might be usefull for (for example) ReactOS Things: 1.improve comdlg32.dll, implement stuff added in WINVER>=0x500 like PrintDlgEx and generally make comdlg32.dll behave more like the windows counterpart (implement a few other things as well, like some of the currently stubbed out items). 2.work on wine notepad. Wont do this until the changes refered to before are merged. 3.write a clone of fontview.exe (windows font sample viewer). This is probobly not usefull for WINE but might be usefull for ReactOS, plus it would be a good excercise in windows GDI programming. 4.write clones of guidgen.exe and/or uuidgen.exe, 2 different windows SDK tools for generating GUIDs/UUIDs. (if we are providing an IDL compiler and other such OLE-esque things, having a GUID/UUID generator is probobly a good thing to have, mainly it is just a stub around a call to CoCreateGUID 5.write a clone of rebase.exe, a win32 PE image rebasing tool. Probobly not usefull to WINE but might be helpfull for ReactOS development, dont know. 6.writing a clone of the cards.dll used by the windows card games. Only problem here is that I would need to find a sutably licenced set of card images since I dont have the skills to draw them myself :) 7.writing a clone of the card games (solitare,freecell etc) included with windows to use said cards.dll (hey, we have WineMine...) 8.writing a character map applet (basicly a clone of charmap.exe). Dont know if WINE needs this but ReactOS probobly does (how else are you going to insert all those fancy foreign language characters and dingbats? :) 9.writing a calculaor app (i.e. a calc.exe clone), again dont know if WINE needs one but ReactOS might... and 10.writing a clone of the Win32 volume control applet. Dont think WINE needs this (since the linux sound API has one already) but ReactOS might... Which of these should I work on? Which of these are usefull to Wine/ReactOS? Are any of these considered "a big beast" (as richedit was refered to by Dimitrie O. Paun?)

As I said in my other message "Its not only used by the MS card games but others as well. Its been reverse engineered by some people and also at some point MS released an "official" SDK for it (at http://www.microsoft.com/mind/0396/games.asp ) so if we dont clone it, people cant play non-ms games that use it" However, there is a problem. Microsoft released a 16 bit version of cards.dll. Later on, they relased a new 32 bit version, also called cards.dll. Some games support the 16 bit version via thunks, some support the 32 bit version and some games try and detect both. Firstly, is there some way I can implement cards.dll so that it presents the 16 bit interface to those apps that use the 16 bit thunks to talk to it and also so it presents the 32 bit interface to those apps that talk to it as a 32 bit dll? Also, I am trying to catalog all the different versions of cards.dll that are out there. (in an attempt to catalog all the differences) I personally have: 1.cards.dll from Windows XP, size 359,936 version 5.1.2600.0. This one is a 32 bit version. 2.cards.dll from Win2k, size 153,360 version 5.0.2134.1. This one is a 32 bit version. 3.cards32.dll from the microsoft article linked to above, size 152,064, no versioninfo resource. This one is a 32 bit version. 4.cards.dll from win98, size 148,528, no versioninfo. This one is a 16 bit version. Does anyone have any other versions, especially other 16 bit versions? BTW, I am going to use the cards from http://www.jfitz.com/cards/index.html. As for the backs, anyone want to draw some? :)

Well basicly, the function names are the same in both the 16 bit dll and the 32 bit dll but one is 16 bit code and one is 32 bit code. The 16 bit version is loaded by LoadLibrary16 Probobly the best way to implement this is to make a cards.dll so that if its loaded by a 16 bit app or loaded via LoadLibrary16, it loads 16 bit code and provides the 16 bit version. If its loaded by LoadLibrary (or via an imports table) from a 32 bit app, the 32 bit version will be loaded. This way, it will work properly with all apps that use cards.dll (regardless of if they use the 16 bit or 32 bit versions) Although, I dont know if that would be a proper way to do it. Anyhow, I need some advice from the gurus on how best to handle this... BTW, there is at least one library that works with both versions by doing LoadLibrary and if that fails LoadLibrary16.

I now know what I am going to work on

After all the feedback, I have decided to work on 4 things: 1.a fontview.exe clone (should give me good experiance in working with the GDI font APIs and also should give the WINE implementations of those APIs a workout. In particular, the functionality used to display a font even though its not registered with the system font lists should be a nice thing to hack on and figure out how its done. Plus, ReactOS can use the results. 2.a guidgen.exe clone (the origonal uses MFC, mine wont obviously) 3.a uuidgen.exe clone (usefull as a way to generate GUIDs/UUIDs from a script or makefile) and 4.a cards.dll clone. Its not only used by the MS card games but others as well. Its been reverse engineered by some people and also at some point MS released an "official" SDK for it (at http://www.microsoft.com/mind/0396/games.asp ) so if we dont clone it, people cant play non-ms games that use it :)

Once again: Wine without X?

OK folks, it's time for my semiannual "I need Wine to run a commandline program, but can't get it to work" rant. First try: just do a default installation of wine-20030709. Log: $ wine -- /dos/d/vss/win32/ss.exe Could not stat /mnt/fd0 (No such file or directory), ignoring drive A: x11drv: Can't open display: $ echo $DISPLAY $ That should have worked, since ss.exe doesn't use any GDI functions. Moving right along, now let's try the tty driver. I added "GraphicsDriver" = "ttydrv" dank@dank:~$ wine /dos/d/vss/win32/ss.exe dank@dank:~$ It blipped the display to a second screen, then when the program exited, the screen blipped back so I couldn't read what it said. That's pretty useless. In fact, this is exactly the behavior complained about in bug 1358 ( http://bugs.winehq.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1358 ) subtitled "GraphicsDriver" = "none" wanted. On the off chance that a "none" driver had been implemented, I tried it. And suprisingly, something sensible happened: dank@dank:~$ wine /dos/d/vss/win32/ss.exe help Could not load graphics driver 'none' fixme:console:SetConsoleCtrlHandler (0x449460,1) - no error checking or testing yet Username: It actually seemed to work, once past the warning! I haven't tested it beyond the password prompt yet, but that was pretty convincing. Is this the recommended way to run console wine programs without any $&?@!\% curses stuff kicking in and without X? And is there a chance of setting this behavior on a program-by-program basis? AppDefaults appears to be keyed off the driver already, so is probably not able to say "these apps should not use x11drv or ttydrv". I know Wine has some issues with some kernel security patches and memory regions. Can anybody confirm that this won't cause issues: The Red Hat Linux 9.0.93 kernel includes new Exec-shield functionality Exec-shield is a security-enhancing modification to the Linux kernel that makes large parts of programs — including their stack — not executable. This can reduce the potential damage of some security holes. Exec-shield is related to the older "non-exec stack patch" but has the potential to provide much greater protection. Question about WINE and adding the "low-level" CD access APIs...

Many copy protections use special tricks on the CDs (I dont know the details). Presumably these protections use some kind of lower-level API to access the data on the CD directly (instead of going through the file I/O calls). Currently TransGaming does something specific for each kind of copy protection to make it work. Would it be possible to implement these APIs in WINE and have them redirect to whatever low level APIs are provided by linux/x/whatever? That way (assuming the implementation was complete), any copy protection would work (i.e. when the protection says "give me this bit of data from the CD in this form", WINE hooks that, gets the relavent data and returns it to the application. Same could be said for protections that use the "boot blocks" to store licence data (such as CDilla Licence Manager), for those you could hook the "read from boot block" and "write to boot block" calls and store the data somewhere (preferably not the real boot block :) If someone can tell me what the low-level access that these protections use is actually called (i.e. what search term to use in MSDN to look for documentation etc) as well as info on whatever the relavent linux low-level access stuff would be, I can look at drawing up some kind of "here is how this could be done" document. Similar low-level hooks could be used to allow things like AudioCatalyst (program that converts audio-cd tracks to MP3 files) and anything else that does lower level access to CDs/DVDs than the high-level file I/O APIs and etc. (the day its possible to run Nero Burning Rom in WINE with no problems will be a great day indeed for the project :) If this isnt fesable for copy protection and so on, please explain why (I know nothing about copy protection or how to program the CD-ROM in win32) Basicly, I dont understand why there is a need for "protection-specific" code in WineX when you could emulate whatever the protection uses and appear just like real windows to the game...

OK, this is a new problem to me... I'm not too familiar with the loader so I thought I'd see if anybody knew what was going on before I spent time trying to debug this myself. I recently decided that my wine installation had become too crufty, so I wiped out ~/c, and ~/.wine, and ran tools/wineinstall. This is with CVS wine... IOW, a 100% standard config. Everything seemed to go fine with wineinstall, but now, no matter what I try, I seem to be unable to run wine at all -- it more-or-less immediately segfautlts. I didn't change anything; aside from some truly trivial font path fixups, I have a completely vanilla ~/.wine/config and ~/c tree.
