File descriptor limit

Hi, I have a problem, in that I'm trying to run an app which opens truly astonishing numbers of threads, sockets and because we're on Linux -> file descriptors. For instance, on a basic run in the default configuration, it runs approximately 180 threads. A quick script that did an ls -1 in the /proc/$pid/fd directory of each running wine process (for some reason I get loads) shows that it opens a truly amazing 18,000 odd file descriptors. In fact, in some circumstances it opens so many, that I get errors like this: wine client error:9a: pipe: Too many open files .. and it dies. The problem is, that I don't know what limit is being used for this. In theory, the OPEN_MAX macro should tell me, but for some reason this is defined on my box as 256 (red hat 8), even though sysconf(_SC_OPEN_MAX) says "1024". So, a few questions, for those in the know (probably wineserver guys): 1) Does Wine try to monitor the number of open file descriptors and do anything about hitting the limit? 2) Does Wine deliberately split into lots of processes when certain limits are reached? (this doesn't seem to happen for other apps, except apache but I know it spawns children deliberately for load balancing reasons). 3) Why do I have so many? This is an app which makes heavy use of networking (it uses jxta which is a java p2p thingy), so far I've considered: * Thread server pipes (2 fds for each pipe) * Thread wait pipes (2 fds each) * Sockets * Open files (does java have a separate fd for each class even when in jars?) 4) Does Wine have any known scalability problems with lots of threads/sockets/files open at once? I noticed the wineserver eats a lot of CPU time. 4) Is there anything I can do about this? *Any* advice here would be most appreciated. This is the most simple winsock client I could write... in fact, its copied directly out of the "Using Winsock Control" in MS sample docs. One button to connect to a server and another to send data to the server. Works fine on a Windows box, but fails under WINE. I say "fails" but it doesn't do anything. My server (on the LAN) doesn't recieve a connect request when you click the connect button on the client... it doesn't see anything from the client. I can click the connect and nothing happens, click send and nothing happens. No errors, but no data transfer either. No firewall is configured. I did copy a mswinsck.ocx to the windows/system directory but its using WINE's winsock.dll. I have installed and run VNC bidirectionally between the same two boxes (Linux and Windows) so I know there is a good IP connection. Hi everybody! I have the followin problem with office2000 installation: I have installed Mandrake 9.1 with the latest wine version(I tried both the source version and the rpm version), and when I install office 2000, the installation starts correctly, I can insert the code and I can choose the components to install. Then, at the moment in which it must copy the files, wine crashes, giving a core file. On the same machime I had the same problem with SuSE 8.2, but not with Knoppix 3.2 installed on Hard Disk. When I try to use crossover office, the installation is perfect. has anyone some ideas for this crash? Thanks a lot Giovanni

I'm getting the same warning as Gerard's however. ========= Well, the Linux ABI tells this : " 4.4. glx.h must include the prototype of the glXGetProcAddressARB extension described above. 4.5. All OpenGL 1.2 and ARB_multitexture, GLU 1.3, and GLX 1.3 entry points and enumerants must be present in the corresponding header files gl.h, glu.h, and glx.h, even if only OpenGL 1.1 is implemented at runtime by the associated runtime libraries. " So if your system was compliant, you should have all the glMulti* prototypes defined in your gl.h file and glXGetProcAddressARB too.... So you should not have any warning. I think this can be avoided. Let use stderr to print this, this way you can use redirections with every program you want. I will add one more remark (!) : I dont know many programs that expect "Wine version" in their output. Deficient implementation of SetFileTime or with stub GetSetFileTimestamp

Hi, Installing a system of the company in the Wine, I found a probable error, that is the following one: when the archives go being unpacked, them they are created in the directory with the current date and would have to be created with the same date of the compact file (as it is made in windows). Thus, in the next step, an update is made verifying the dates it of the files. However, in the Wine, it gives wrong for cause of this difference in the dates. I believe that I can myself make a patch, however as I still do not have experience in debugging Wine, he would like a suggestion of as to find the problem, because I do not know if the bug is in lzexpand (LZCopy) or in SetupApi (perhaps because of stub GetSetFileTimestamp) or because in SetFileTime "const FILETIME * lpCreationTime" simply is ignored, and in server, the function "static int set_file_time(obj_handle_t handle, time_t access_time, time_t write_time) " must not have more one parameter? Manually I make the system to install and run, however I want it running like in Windows. Thanks in advance. -- Marcelo Duarte

Memory Protection Wierdness

I am playing with Worms II and the installer that comes with the Demo and uncovered a signal handling fault Under Solaris and some wierdness in the installer. After decompressing the application the installer executes the setup program which displays a splash screen the application then generates a Page Fault Exception. I can't give a stack trace because here is where the wierdness is. The Setup Program seems to not inherit the -debugmsg status and doesn't end up under control of the debugger (By this time there are 5 wine processes running) Anyway to cut a long story short the page fault DOES occur in a mapped region (Its in VIRTUAL_DumpViews() listing) but doesn't have a handler associated with it. Under What Conditions would they not ???

Package setups

hi, I'm just looking at the HOWTO and want to clarify that all the Wine RPMs/packages attempt to set up a fake windows drive and configuration for the user. I'm under the impression that binary packages should work out of the box, so the user has no need to create their own config or fake windows drive. Is this right? If so, I'll amend the HOWTO to suit.

Hello , This patch http://cvs.winehq.com/patch.py?root=/home/winehq/opt/cvs-commit&id=8366 Caused regression with chess.net application. (http://www.chess.net/cnfw/download/cnfw254.exe) If you click on a help button it will drop a messagebox which tells that 'No browser found', it is normal. The anomality is that it is not possible to close messagebox by clicking "ok" button with a mouse. But both pressing "enter" and clicking close window icon work. Uninitialised variable in TASK_Create

Hi, There is an unintialised string (the name variable) in TASK_Create in task.c (visible if you run almost any program with --debugmsg +task). I would try and fix the problem but I have no idea what the correct fix is. Is this just a case of adding *name = 0? Rob

CVS Install error: version mismatch 113/109

Hi, i download last wine source. i compiling and when i use wineinstall i have the follow error if i execute wine i have the same error wine client error:9: version mismatch 113/109. Your wine binary was not upgraded correctly, or you have an older one somewhere in your PATH. Or maybe the wrong wineserver is still running?
