GlobalAlloc returning memory that isn't 8-byte aligned?

Hi all, It looks to me like the wine implementation of GlobalAlloc is only returning addresses that are 4 byte aligned, not 8-byte aligned as MSDN says it should... Unfortunately on Sparc-Solaris double values need to be 8-byte aligned, and if GlobalAlloc is returning 4-byte aligned addresses - this is pretty hard. I'm afraid I don't really understand all of the magic going on in dlls/ntdll - I tried redefining ARENA_SIZE_MASK to ~7 instead of ~3, but this caused seg-faults in various places... Any suggestions on how to convince GlobalAlloc to actually return 8-byte aligned addresses would be greatly appreciated! Warren

After searching through the docs to see why there isnt any code in wine to run the normal windows bootup routines, i.e. Run/RunOnce/winboot.ini, see bug 717, I found something mentioning winebootup in the programs directory. I did a search for it on my whole system and didn't find it. What happened to it? Does anyone still have an old copy of it, I would like to put some of it's code directly into wine, or maybe reimplement it if it was problematic... Problems converting DLL to unix SO with winelib

Hello All At Wine-Devel! I am trying to convert a win32 DLL to a unix SO. The dll named if32dt is basically a wrapper over the serial port, interfacing some custom hardware. It is therefore a driver to the custom hw. This is part of a project to port a windows sales app to linux. There are about 6 DLLs with similar structure and my aim is to show my superiors that using winelib is much better than simply rewriting the DLL to use unix system calls. 1) I have sucessfully copied my project over to unix and built the so file The project is basicaly a couple of headers and the c file ifdt32.cpp bash# cd ifdt32/ bash# mv ifdt32.cpp ifdt32.c #the file is plain C , cpp was confusing gcc bash# winemaker --nomfc -imsvcrt.dll -I/usr/local/include/wine/msvcrt --dll . bash# ./configure bash# make bash# make install The DLL uses msvcrt so I added it. => I read some issues between msvcrt and crt in winehq.com After changing a couple lines of ifdt.c I was able to build libifdt.so . It is hard to debug because the seg fault happens very early and I havent been able to get winedbg to work. I have tried this on wine-20020509 and wine-20020122 with exactly the same problem. opengl32 wglSwapLayerBuffers

Hi, I've been on a kind of rampage trying to Warcraft 3 working the best it can under Wine. I have previously tried WineX, which works pretty much right out of their CVS. WineX has some of D3D8 done, thus War3 works easily. But however, it has some graphics bugs, and possible some what slower framerate than in Windows. Warcraft 3 has a secondary, opengl graphics driver in it. You can access it by running wine War3.exe -- -opengl for example. But when doing this on either Wine or WineX it would say wglSwapLayerBuffers... stub !, and there would be no graphics output. I investigated this and of course found that there was nothing there. I searched through gl headers and the wine sources for an opengl equivilant, and found a SwapBuffers(hdc HDC) through GDI/x11drv? I decided to call that from wglSwapLayerBuffers. In doing that, this still ignored a parameter of UINT fuplanes. I really don't know what fuplanes is for. So this is not at all a complete implimination of this function. An attached patch file shows my changes to wgl.c as from current release. I went ahead and tried War3 again with opengl. This time, it outputs graphics. In comparison with D3D8, there are no graphical errors, and it seems slightly faster. But DXGrab no longer works, but a quick solution is to switch to the same game resolution. The game looks like its working perfectly now!! No side affects have been seen with ignoring fuPlanes. I'm haven't worked on wine before, but I'm willing to work with whoever to figure out how to correctly implement this function or others related to this. Perhaps I can figure out what fuPlanes is? Need better documentation of Windows 16/32 APIs for Mingw Port

Does anyone where I can find some good information on the win16/32 APIs? Any book refrences to amazon mabey? I'm trying to make a detailed list of what needs to be done to seperate all of the Wine 16/32 code and fix the locations of 16bit api call importations and it is turning in to a PITA. Finding anything on the normal APIs in MSDN is gettin harder everyday with all of the .NET crap they keep adding and the fact they tend to have a lot of bugs in there own docs. I will be submitting a few issues to bugzilla and emailing wine-devel this weekend with all of the TODO for proper seperation. Before retiring this bug with a patch, I have to check some things with somebody who knows the memory functions used in DOS emulation. I got the return address using CTX_SEG_OFF_TO_LIN on SegSs and Eip. Then, I used DOSMEM_MapDosToLinear on the return of DOSMEM_MapRealToLinear( (DWORD)*retpointer ) where retpointer is the result of the CTX call. I'm hoping that this gave me the linear address of the return address. Backup once, write a NOP ( 00 ) Backup again and write the 0x9b wait instruction. That should overwrite the interrupt call. Then, I have to back the return address up two bytes, to execute this code. Since my code pointer points to the first byte that I changed, I used DOSMEM_MapLinearToDos((LPVOID *)codepointer) and stored that value in *retpointer. Do these functions do what I think that they do and did I get my offsets right? If I got all of this right, I'll be able to complete the rest of these emulation interrupts, assuming an FPU is installed. There is one thing that bothers me. My resources say that this emulation code is part of the programs that use it. I don't have this program to test with. Asymmetric mouse movement in DGA2 mode

Hi: I patched 'windows/x11drv/event.c' to run Starcraft in DGA2 mode. In DGA2 I noticed that the mouse movement is't symmetric, ie: mouse speed when moving left/up < mouse speed when moving right/down. Is there any cleaner solution? Observation: in 'send_mouse_event' says: "/* Relative mouse movements seem not to be scaled as absolute ones */" BTW, in this application, when the mouse reaches the border of the screen (moving the mouse cursor out of the window), the view is supposed to be scrolled in that direction. This doesn't work in DGA mode, but works when not using DGA Any idea? System: latest winex CVS version + XFree86 4.2.0

Call for application owner

Having just fixed Bug 671, I think we need an owner for the Valve Hammer application. It demonstrates numerous bugs on the CVS version (4 days old). The bugs range from LoadLibrary errors during the installer run, to gui problems with the main screen. Even the tab control demonstrates differences from native in this package. I don't have the time to use this program as a test base and hope someone can step up and do it. The installer is the second attachment to Bug 671 and is all you need to get started. WINE dlls on Windows Status Update

As many of you know, I have been in the process of porting the WINE shared libraries to Mingw as Windows PE dlls for the ReactOS project. Below are results of testing the dlls that we can build from the current WINE tree under Windows98SE. We were going to use win2k for this test however the Windows File Protection was giving us to much trouble for it to be worth it at this time. Another test is planned at the end of the month using win2k. Thanks to Chris Gianelloni for helping to setup and run these test in VMware. I have some comments - sometimes you mark as resolved and ask to reopen if the bug still exists bugs with very nice reports. I think this is good approach when you can't check whether the problem still exists or for some obscure applications, but many of the bug reports you closed are short, nice and consious. I think better approaches with these sort of bug reports is: a) try to reproduce yourself - the best approach. Your confirmation in the bug comments is very important for developer who may try to fix the issue. b) if research looks complex - a half a way to solving a bug, you can add comment, smth like "Needs to be confirmed". In both cases bug can be assigned to the component owner. c) ask to confirm without resolving the bug All these approaches insure that bug report won't be forgotten and this can happen if the bugs are just marked as "resolved". Could you try to go through the old bugs you marked as resolved? I already started to do this. I'll leave my comments in the bugs I reviewed. Improving debugging (gdb) support

Hi, I'd like to improve debugging support for Wine, and have time to undertake a larger project. Either I could work on winedbg to match gdb's features, or I could try to make gdb understand Wine better. Given the amount of useful frontends for gdb, it seems wiser to go for the second option. I'd love to be corrected if you think working on winedbg is a better choice. Gdb seems to have trouble understanding the way windows processes run in Wine. If anyone has thought about this, I'd like to know your opinions on a good solution to this problem. Furthermore, it seems useful to make gdb parse the .pdb format, or other debugging information. If you are interested in owning R4, that's fine by me. For what it's worth, from 1993-97 I was a programmer on the team that designed and wrote Notes R4 and R5 (Iris Associates) so I have some knowledge of application internals (although, sadly, no source code.) I'm following the discussion and bug report 466 although I have not been able to test with the latest CVS due to wine config problems detailed in my earlier message to the list. Regards, Dan Schwarz

I was under the impression that there already was one, but it looks like I was mistaken. I will volunteer to own the Notes *R4* client, which I regularly use. (I suggest having a different owner for Notes R5.) My employer only recently began providing a VPN access option for Linux, so I've only been back to using Notes with Wine for a few weeks, but it seems to be working very well. Is this a trivial thing to fix? Currently the code simply ends up looking for the proxy in the registry. Everything is reasonable fro IClassFactory but of course IUnknown isn't in there because it should be inherent in the system itself. Bill

linux kernel thoughts

I'm sure people have asked questions about integrating wine into the linux kernel. Probably got flamed by everybody, yeah? But that's not what I'm posting about. Not directly, anyway. =) I'm thinking of writing a kernel patch for PE executable support. Is there any reason why wine libraries should not be used in a similar manner as standard linux libraries? Granted wine is more than just it's libraries. Anyway, good idea, bad idea? And please keep the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" comments to yourself. No progress is made with that mentality. Wine front-end -- winespy

I am finishing a gui front end for wine that allows to start and stop wine app on the fly, capture wine output and filter debug cannels as required. It's done calling wine with --debugmesg +all and filtering it, so it'll slow down in some extents wine app.... For the moment I didn't find a way to remotely control wine debug channels from my app. I think that with little wine code changes it would be possible, i.e. passing a pipe to wine with something like --debugpipe num, and using it to start-stop debug channels output on the fly... But I can't code it.... If someone knows how to implement that stuff, I'd be glad to change my app... it would be much faster than now. BTW, I'll post my app (a QT based one) on next days after some testing. Regards Max

problem : win16 stack selector freed twice

Hi everybody, I encountered the following problem that completely broke MapLS. I investigated a little and here is what I've found : 1) a selector is allocated for the win16 stack in THREAD_InitStack 2) the selector is freed and the stack replaced by another (the DGROUP of the module) in NE_StartTask 3) MapLS is called, allocates the freed selector and keep it in a linked list 4) the selector is freed in SYSDEPS_ExitThread which believes it to be the selector of the initial task 5) the selector being freed is allocated (from where is not important) and the associated descriptor is modified 6) further call to MapLS (wich makes the function to use this selector) make wine to crash because the descriptor has been overwritten So 2) and 4) are conflicting but I think only 4) is wrong. 4) should free the selector of the new stack instead of the old one. Or should do nothing if the stack has been changed. Any idea? A+ Christian

NT Native API File functions

Hi, I have a small dilema. I'd like to implement the functions below, and declare them in a header file somewhere, but they are not declared by Microsoft in any of their header files. (Checked the NT DDK, VC++ headers and Platform SDK.) So, should I: * go ahead and declare them like this * add an #ifdef DECLARE_NATIVEAPI / #endif around the functions * put them in a private header file in (say dlls/ntdll/native.h ) or just leave them out all together? [wine-devel copy of my LKML mail] doh ! This time with patch... Hi all, when running a program on Wine, suddenly my 2.4.18 froze completely. This has been caused by the program submitting an odd number of output bytes to the soundcard in 16bit output mode, thus causing the sound driver to loop endlessly on the last remaining byte. When digging deeper, I found that this odd number of output bytes had been caused by the SoundBlaster 16 driver always returning one half of the output bytes that it could take (in the SNDCTL_DSP_GETOSPACE ioctl result), thus always cutting the remaining free buffer in half, thus hitting an odd number after some time (1988 bytes -> 994 -> 497). The SB16 driver is doing an internal 16bit -> 8bit conversion in case it's running in fullduplex mode, and it simply returned the remaining free bytes in the DMA buffer, which should have been twice that number due to the 16bit -> 8bit conversion in fullduplex mode. Also, it's doing 8bit -> 16bit conversion in the 8bit output case, which SNDCTL_DSP_GETOSPACE ioctl didn't account for either. In short: When using SB16 in fullduplex mode, the SNDCTL_DSP_GETOSPACE ioctl didn't account for the 16/8bit format conversions that the SB16 does in this case, thus leading to an odd-numbered input count freezing the box due to a second "odd remainder" endless loop bug. Thus this patch does: - add two flags DMA_CONV_16_8, DMA_CONV_8_16 to struct dma_buffparms to check for format conversion in dma_ioctl()/SNDCTL_DSP_GETOSPACE and thus fix SNDCTL_DSP_GETOSPACE result to account for format conversion - prevent endless looping (lockup) on single remaining byte by discarding odd remainders of odd output counts in case of 16bit format This WORKS (well, for me at least :-). The problem may be a memory leak in Wine. Try running top while your Wine application is running and keep an eye on the amount of memory Wine is using. If you are using the latest Wine from CVS you may notice that you application runs longer, thanks to a bug-fix by Andreas Mohr. Keyboard layout detection not working??

Hi all, I am using Debian SID with KDE. In KDE, I defined two keyboard layouts (US and IL). I tried to add Israeli keyboard detection using the attached patch (layout.diff). When trying to test that patch, however, I perform the following task: I type in the command as suggested in the docs (wine --debugmsg +key,+keyboard >& key.log). Attached are two run attempts. key.log is with the US keyboard selected, key2.log is with the Hebrew keyboard selected. Comparing the two outputs, several things become evident: 1. The Israeli keyboard is not detected. It fails to match even the non-Hebrew characters (such as the '/' instead of lower case 'q'). It's as if WINE did not notice that a non-English keymap was installed. On the other hand, there are some differences between the two runs. What's going on? 2. The dvorak keyboard has 0 mismatches???? I noticed that the code has some different virtual mapping of the keyboard. I am not aware that dvorak keyboards generate a different scan code mapping. Am I missing something here? 3. There does not appear to be any code that detects layout changes in X11, and sends the apropriate WM_INPUTLANGCHANGE message. I understood that implementing an event trigered by X layout change is a difficult matter, but it is highly necessary for my BiDi support (many programs, including Office, know the current direction, and have visual representation when it changes. Not implementing this message may prove to be problematic in that respect). I currently don't have the capacity to go after this particular problem, but if it remains unsolved by the time it becomes crucial to me, I will. If anyone has any leads on solving this problem, please let me know. I have entered bug #735 on this issue. PATCH: DragQueryFileW (shellole.c; shell32)

Hi, There appears to be a little bug in DragQueryFileW. According to MSDN pFiles is the offset in bytes. Did somebody make a mistake or was the LPWSTR cast added on purpose? Shlwapi and user32 question

Hola, The only thing keeping me from building shlwapi is that its import the non-win32 call wvsnprintfA and wvsnprintfW from user32 to implement wvnsprintfA and wvnsprintfW. I did a search of the wine source tree and nothing else seems to depend on these functions being exported from user32. Can they be moved somewhere else or removed? Possible minor bug in bin2res

Hola, I have been working on a small project that I am going to be submitting to the wine tree that used binary resources under windows and when I went to convert the files with bin2res I get this error "rename: File exists" It dumps the right wine resource information to the resouce-tmp file but when it goes to unlink the tmp file is when the error happens and the information must be manualy added to the rsrc.rc I traced it down, made sure that all other tmp file acces works in bin2res and and I think the problem is on line 245 if (rename(tmpfile, g_lpstrInputFile) == -1) { perror("rename"); unlink(tmpfile); return 0; } return 1; I have followed the directions on www.winehq.com for creation of a rsrc.rc to dump the resource information so I don't think I'm doing anything wrong. User (developer ?) friendly execution trace

I find tracing a wine problem with wine --debugmsg for large programs unpractical. Usually you can know about exactly when a program hangs or behaves badly, but there's no way to activate/deactivate tracing after program start (afaik...) Being also a windoze (sigh) programmer, I find very useful some utilities like winspy that presents a window log in which you can start/stop tracing or logging of wine messages, system calls and so on, and activate/deactivate filters on the fly. This would allow spotting the bug when it arises instead of having tenths or hundreds of mbyte of logs. I could implement it as a filter taking input from wine, but I guess it'll slow downn much apps, having to parse wine output on the fly. Much better would be an internal implementation.... Some comments about ? Regards Max

DOS memory Question..... or How to increase base memory for DOS apps

Hi, Many DOS apps needs a lot of base memory even if EMS or XMS memory are used. If it's true, a solution could be to initialize DOS memory differently for pure DOS apps by modifying the DOSMEM_Init function. DOSMEM_Init is called at 3 different places : - process_attach in dlls/kernel/kernel_main.c - DOSVM_Init in dlls/winedos/dosvm.c - MZ_InitMemory in dlls/winedos.dosvm.c and acts differently the first and second calls. Since I don't know wine internals enough and the "flow of execution", I have no idea how to do it in a clean way that do not break everything. If someone can help me or give me hints? A+ Christian

How to fix SizeOfImage when loading a builtin dll ?

Hi everybody, I noticed that, when a builtin dll (.so) is loaded, the SizeOfImage field in the OptionalHeader is not updated and stays equal to page_size (see winebuild, spec32). I need to get the correct value in SizeOfImage. I thought about updating that field in map_dll(a)library/loader.c, but don't know how to get the size of the image. Could anyone help me ? I thought I might as well give him a good opportunity and ask: what about translating docs? Those at WineHQ and within Wine tree? What I would like to know is, which of them would you like to see translated first (as for now, I am, unfortunately, the only person I know of, that intends to do this)? What about user interface? How do you want to distribute it - want to have it at your site, or ony host a link? And so on, and so forth, and whatever... :)))) -- Damian Wojslaw
