Hi! I have run into a warning, when compiling with gcc 3.1 (I dont know if it is reported or not with 2.x gccs). And I think the warning is right. I dont think that the initializer of nil is right. It initializes an zero (0) character length WCHAR array to a one character lenght array. Or I just does not understand something? argc/argv issue - More info, hack and questions...

Hello, I am still investigating this argv/argc issue. The sequence of events as far as I can tell: CreateProcessA(NULL, "regsvr32 comdlg32.ocx",....) Process_CREATE calls fork_and_exec( NULL, "regsvr32 comdlg32.ocx", ...) This sees there is no explicitly specified filename so inserts wine and -- into the command line (now "wine -- regsvr32 comdlg32.ocx") Eventually the new process starts with the wine -- regsvr32 comdlg32.ocx as the command line, so it needs to strip off the inserted fields, and in PROCESS_InitWine, main_exe_name is correct (path\regsvr32.exe) but the argc/argv includes these new fields. At the top it states: (Scheduler/process.c, lines 491/492): app_argv++; /* remove argv[0] (wine itself) */ app_argc--; This obviously leaves behine the -- and things go downhill from there onwards. Interestingly wine -- regsvr32 comdlg32.ocx works fine, so there must be command line processing here which doesnt occur during the CreateProcess route. Question: Should fork_and_exec insert the -- into the command line? If it should, should PROCESS_InitWine check for it, ie: app_argv++; /* remove argv[0] (wine itself) */ app_argc--; if (app_argc && strcmp(app_argv[0], "--") == 0) { app_argv++; /* remove argv[1] ('--' inserted by fork_and_exec) */ app_argc--; } However, what implications are of doing this (it works, of course). Wineconsole using all memory

Hi Eric, I had got memory problems by the past. When run, wineconsole was using the whole memory on my system. Problem was never solved: it had also disappeared whithout doing anything. (we only had put it in trace mode and enter the correct values into registry, that had solved nothing) It's already there today. argc / argv issue?

Hello, I started debugging a relatively simple problem, which is I copied comdlg32.ocx and regsvr32.exe from a windows 2000 box to a no-windows wine installation (on Mandrake 8.2), and found that if I run 'wine regsvr32.exe comdlg32.ocx', it succeeds fine, whereas running the same command under wcmd caused failures. I debugged a little further and the problem appears to be caused by argc being wrong when wcmd (a winelib program) launches regsvr32.exe. I am continuing to investigate but I know argv/argc issues have cropped up lots and would appreciate any pointers. CD-ROM not recognized

Howdy Folks, I'm trying to run Cryo's Arthur's Knights under wine. I've managed to install using setup.exe, but when I go to play the game, I get an error message telling me to insert CD #1, even though CD #1 is in the CD-ROM tray and mounted. Any clues as to why I would be getting this message, how to convince the game that the CD is actually in the CD-ROM drive, or how to research any of these issues myself? Wine[X] and Grand Prix 3 (Microprose)

Hi all. I just turned my last 10 hours into configuring Wine to run Formula One Grand Prix 3 from Microprose. After several tries using the latest Wine and WineX (making many mistakes with the registry files ...) I got it to run using the last-night WineX cvs soruce ;-) I only have trhee graphic problems: a) the menus (where you configure several game options/details) do not appear in the right colors. Like a 8bit image displayed with the wrong color-pallete. b) in the race with very perfect weather (0% rain risk) - where the sky should be completely blue - the sky doesn't get painted at all -> resulting in "tearing" textures, because this area doesn't get refresh. (when some clouds show up the graphic is perfect) and c) Direct3D is not recognized at all -> resulting that the game runs in software-rendered mode. For a) I guess it migth be a wrong 16bit mode (or even an 8 bit mode) - my XFree-4.2.0 is running in 16bit mode normally. 24bit XFree results in the same mess and 8bit X results in a slighty worser images. About b) I guess some bitblt or clear function is nor working properly. I also tested the PerferctGraphics and DoubleBuffer option of Wine yielding the same results ... For c) OpenGL on my Matrox G450 is configured and runs fine - I have no clue whatever Wine[X] needs to provide Direct3D ... ? I can provide whatever trace output is needed - and would also offer to write some code if someone points me to the place in the souce where something is missing (I know C and C++ ...). I could also provide trace output to get (generic) Wine run the game. (It seems to be a problem that more DirectDraw is missing?). The rest of the game runs just fine, including Sound and Joystick support. Status of building Wine under Cygwin/Mingw

Note: send any spelling/grammer errors to /dev/null. I've compiled a little list of things that are still lacking on the port of wine to mingw/msys/cygwin. Unless I mention cygwin as the target it can be assumed for the purpose of this doc I am speaking about a mingw target. About 5 or 6 months ago James Tablor and Casper Hornstroup ported wine to Mingw for ReactOS. ReactOS is very close to having basic Windowing support so I have set out to compleate the work they have started by bringing the wine/Rewind trees up to speed with our changes. The current wine build system still has a few things Missing before we can build without needing the reactos source tree/makefiles. Note: I have ordered the list by importance and the steps needed to build. 1. Make configure changes to build wine support under mingw/cygwin. Currently configure Has issues detecting how it should build the wine files as either dlls,so or .a I have submitted a patch for this but it was rejected because it was just a work-around And did not fix the problem. You will need to still run ./configure under cygwin as dlltool/wrap do not detect properly under msys with configure. With the current port in the ReactOS source tree we use our own Makefiles/resources and I would like to get away from this. 2. run ./configure --host=mingw32 --target=mingw32 --build=mingw32 CFLAGS="-D_MINGW_ -D_WINDOWS -DWINE_NOWINSOCK" 3. Remove winedump from the tools/Makefile as Mingw/Cygwin and others have support for dumping PE executable information and it is loaded with Unixisms. 4. add -liberty to the makefile for wrc and wmc. This is needed because of getopt and optarg 5. add a configure check to #define snprintf _snprintf for wrc when building with mingw. 6. Remove server, library and tsx11 for mingw. If you want to build wineserver under cygwin we will need to adapt get/set thread context from GDB's win32 support. 7. 90% of the source from the dlls compiles with no problems. The issue is when you want to link the objects as a dll and compile in the resources. winebuild now has support to build the *.def files needed for dlltool so there will need to be changes on the way that the spec/def files are used when building on a Win32 host. If one tries to build wine currently under Mingw/Cygwin it will puke when linking to the needed imports because winebuild will try to import from lib*.so rather then from dllname.a I've also been having troble linking with resources compiled with wrc under Mingw/Cygwin. 7. We do not want to build advapi32, Kernel32, ntdll, user32, gdi, msvcrt or crt.dll 8. These are the dlls we know that we can build and need: avicap32, avifile32, comctl32, commdlg, crypt32, ddraw, dinput, dplay, dplayx dsound(needs imports from winmm), imagehlp, lzexpand, mapi32, ole32, oleaut32 olecli, oledlg, olepro32, olesvr, richedit, rpcrt4, serialui, setupapi, shdocvw shell32, shfolder, shlwapi, tapi32, twain, url, urlmon, version, winmm, winspool wintrust. 9. Debugging will be differnt under Windows/ReactOS due to the wine debugger not working. Under ReactOS currently we have all of the FIXMEs and TRACES mapped to our NTDLL as DbgPrnt and others. I'm not 100% sure as to how we are doing this yet. 10. DLL seperation and Wineserver dependace. I wont even really be able to start looking at this untill the 10 issues above are worked out. I know that when I tested programs/dlls from our first wine port under ReactOS there were issues due to a lack of internal wineserver functions. 11. The chain of dependance for the Sound/Graphics for Winmm/DirectX and others will need interfaces developed for the HAL (Codeweavers/Transgamming?) Correction for WWN 121

Hello, just had an update for WWN 121... Near the bottom it says that Alexandre rejected a patch for the ldconfig problem (the one i submitted) that puts $libdir/wine into ld.so.conf because users need to set $WINEDLLPATH... the corrections are this: users need to set $LD_LIBRARY PATH and The latest wineinstall patch I submitted removes the $libdir/wine addition and instead always runs ldconfig (just in case of modules being renamed) if anyone wants to append that to 121 or add it into the 122 __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? winsock2 unit test update

A patch for the winsock 2 unit test posted yesterday. It now has an overlapped client. If you look at the code, it does pretty nasty things to wine, and still works :-) BUGS: probably doesn't compile under Windows, I'm using some gcc extensions. You just get too used to them ... If somebody was able to port these to Windows and test the outcome I would be really happy. Just a small patch to the server sock.c - it tries to implement exactly the strategies that I described in my previous FD_CLOSE posting. Seems to work pretty well with my test cases. It makes a difference to my previous implementation only in rare cases, but I am sure it will be better at preventing server busy-loops in these cases. I just have downloaded the source of wine v. 20020411, I launched ./tools/wineinstall as a normal user and I was told to enter the root password, the install crashed. FD_CLOSE, again

I still have problems with FD_CLOSE signalling. AFAICS FD_CLOSE must be signalled when either of the three following conditions hold: 1 Network error (Linux signals POLLERR) 2 Graceful close by the peer (Linux signals POLLHUP) 3 shutdown (SD_SEND) by the peer (Linux signals POLLIN with 0 bytes to read). ** Condition 3 will only be noticed if we tell poll() we're interested ** ** in POLLIN. ** In that case, if 1 or 2 occurs, POLLIN will also be signalled, whether or not there are still data to be read. However, we cannot simply activate POLLIN always, because if there _is_ data to be read on a normal connection and the app does not read it immediately, the server would busy-loop. We can take advantage of the fact that after every recv(), winsock will notify the server and try to re-enable FD_READ. (This does not hold for ReadFile() operations, as I pointed out in my recent "RFC..." posting). Thus what we could do is enable polling for POLLIN whenever FD_READ is re-enabled, even if then app has not registered for FD_READ notification, and disable it when POLLIN is received. Furthermore, finishing an asynchronous read request would also reenable POLLIN, whether or not there are more requests in read queue. Only an app that uses synchronous ReadFile() calls would never see FD_CLOSE. Does that seem correct, or am I again overlooking something?? It is a completely different story _at what time_ FD_CLOSE should be signalled when one ove the above 3 conditions is actually encountered. The Winsock2 spec says different things: In docs of WSAEventSelect: "FD_CLOSE should only be posted after all data is read from a socket, but an application should check for remaining data upon receipt of FD_CLOSE to avoid any possibility of losing data". This suggests that we could signal FD_CLOSE if POLLHUP is received, even if there is still data to be read, although we "should" not. In docs of WSAAsyncSelect: "[FD_CLOSE is posted] after remote system initiated graceful close, when no data currently available to receive (note: if data has been received and is waiting to be read when the remote system initiates a graceful close, the FD_CLOSE is not delivered until all pending data has been read)" This suggests the opposite - signal FD_CLOSE only after the app has read all data, even if this is far later than the actual POLLHUP. RFC: How should ReadFile() on sockets behave ??

If there is a socket for which event notification has been requested by the application with WSAEventSelect(), the behaviour is as follows: - When data arrives, FD_READ is signalled _ONCE_. - FD_READ is only delivered again if the app explicitly reenables it with WSAEventSelect/WSAAsyncSelect or if the application issues a recv() call. - The latter is accomplished in wine by calling _enable_event ( FD_READ, ...) after every recv() operation in the winsock code. - If an app uses ReadFile() rather than a winsock call to retrieve data, the FD_READ event is of course not reenabled, because the current implementation in file.c has no concept of socket events. Question: should ReadFile() behave like recv(), i.e. reenable FD_READ, or not? If yes, we would have a certain dependency of the ReadFile() code on winsock, because FD_READ etc are winsock-specific macros. If no, an app that relies on ReadFile() reenabling FD_READ will obviously fail. The best thing would probably be to do this in the server, but we currently can't, because the server does not notice when a read operation is finished. Opinions? Byte Swapping in storage32.c for solaris

I've been running into some problems with byte swapping in ole related code - it looks like the relevant stuff is in storage32.c - I've modified StorageUtl_{Read,Write}Word and DWord to byteswap on bigendian platforms, and that seems to help, but I'm also running into problems with the wchar property names in StorageImpl_{Read,Write}Property - the individual characters are showing up in the wrong order, so "Data" is showing up as 0x44006100 0x74006100 instead of 0x00440061 0x00740061 as I would expect... Is it safe to use the same approach here? should ReadProperty byteswap each wchar and then WriteProperty byteswap it again? There seem to be a lot of places things like this happen: StorageImpl_ReadProperty(This, propertyIndex, &chainProperty); chainProperty.startingBlock = bbHeadOfChain; StorageImpl_WriteProperty(This, propertyIndex, &chainProperty); and I'm not sure how else to handle these cases... Also - at the moment the only byteswapping macros actually appear in tools/wrc/wrctypes.h - would it make sense to move them to one of the top-level include directories, and use them in both storage32.c and in wrc? At the moment it seams, that in the future there exists under MS-Windows three types of programs: programs which are in native-code (that can be run on Wine and can be portet to Linux by re-compiling with Wine), programs which are in MS-IL-code (that can in the future be run on Mono I hope) and mixed programs (IL-Code-programs, which integrate Native-Code DLLs and Native-Code-programs, which integrate IL-Code DLLs). And I think, that for the last type of programs a cooperation between the Wine-Devels and the Mono-Devels is very advantageous. So, existing this cooperations? Memori and Swap Full after some hours

I have a windows application run in a very old machine Pentium 133Mhz 32 Mb RAM (believes this still exist) The application running fine, but after some hours (3 or 4) the memory and swap are full and the machine run very slowly. I Close the wine and all back to normal I dont know what are happen with system, but is a very hard trouble to me. Anybody have any idea to apply in this case Thanks Marcelo Welter

this works perfectly on my system too added check for ntfs drives (in case it is drive c) NOTE: if you have read/write on for NTFS (in your kernel) i would not recommend using that as your c drive. thats why the wineinstall script says you should probably check the ~/.wine/config file anyways added check for cdroms mounted at /cdrom to be non-supermount (it got broken when i added the check for supermount cdroms) added supermount cdrom checking NOTE: if you have more than 1 cdrom, make sure you change the "Device" = line in ~/.wine.config for 1 of the cdroms as the script says both cdroms are /dev/cdrom __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? PATCH: Unit test for winsock2

This patch introduces a unit test for winsock2 functionality. It is not complete yet, but I have found it useful already. The most important part (for me), tests for overlapped IO, have yet to be added. The test code implements a simple echo protocol over the loopback device. Servers and clients are started as threads, so that differently implemented servers/clients can be used. It should be easy to add more server and client routines to get extensive testing. Apart from wine error checks, correct data transmission is also checked for. Currently two tests are run: - synchronous server/synchronous client(s) - synchronous server/event-driven client(s). Applies: CVS 2002-04-24. Only with all patches from my series and today's two bugfixes will all tests succeed! Dear all, When I mounted my Visio 2000 and try to run Setup.exe, I got the following error: err:module:BUILTIN32_dlopen failed to load .so lib for builtin wineoss.drv: /usr/local/lib/wine/wineoss.drv.so: undefined symbol: OSS_MidiInit err:module:MODULE_LoadLibraryExA Loading of native DLL C:\Windows\System\wineoss.drv failed (error 193), check this file. err:module:BUILTIN32_dlopen failed to load .so lib for builtin wineoss.drv: /usr/local/lib/wine/wineoss.drv.so: undefined symbol: OSS_MidiInit I have create a fake-windows directory and I'm using 22042002 version of WINE. Separating Process and Debugger Debugmsg Output

Hallo, if one starts a program via wine with e.g. relay debug messages enabled, and the program crashes, these debugmessages get also enabled for the winedbg process and this clutters the relay log to get nearly unreadable. Until Alexandre's restructuring of the Command Line handling, I had "---debugmsg -all" as additional argument to the winedbg command line in system.reg, aedebug section. No wine spits on this argument. How do you solve this problem? x86 -> java bytecode?

Hello, I was just wondering if anyone could give me a clue about how hard it might be to write an x86->java bytecode translator, or if one exists already? This isn't totally irrelevant to wine, since it seems like it could be used to get wine running on non-x86 machines (very inefficiently of course). Frank

WINE XIM Patch

Hello everyone, Myself, Mike McCormack and Ulrich Czekalla have been working like mad to get XIM into Wine. We have a very early and unclean patch for people to try and help improve. This patch applies to the winehq tip as of today and probably changed a bunch of things it does not need to. If you use XIM input and can work with this please give it a try. I know it works with Japanese input with kinput2 on my redhat 7.2 machine. Since i do japanese that is what i have been testing but i have not idea for any other input methods or languages. Some known issues. * The xim box does not appear in the right place, and i cannot see what i type as i type it in. * the input does not always go to the correct edit window. * Presently it probably only works for edit controls...
