I aplolgize for the spelling. I never was any good at english. The muncher project is the implmentation of wine into a very very unique distro of linux and used as a true windows clone. I know, it's not a good name for a project, but it's the best I could come up with after spinning around in a desk chair for five minutes. I also know that this isn't the first time anyone has come up with the idea either, but this is differnt. I have an implentation scheme. I came up with the idea while working on an mp3 player for my car (which also runs linux) There are two HDs in my car stereo. The first is a small 512M drive running linux with all the core compents to make xmms work. The second drive is the mp3 drive, an 8GB removable with FAT32 on it so I can swap it into a windows box too. The mall Linux drive does all the work. It struck me one day that wouldn't it be cool at have a real windows interface for wine. I mean, you can hack the system as much as you can, but when it comes to it, the explorer start bar and all of the activeX do-hickies like control panel and My computer are owned by microsoft. So I devised a plan to make Linux look, run, smell, feel, and act like windows. The goal is to fool my mom by swapping the OS and seeing if she notices. The system works muck like the mp3 player in my car. Two partitons, one is the linux "Macrokenrel" which does all the behind the scenes stuff and the a fat32 partition, which holds the windows files and that the user only sees. The Macrokenel will be a linux partition that has the ability to boot, starts the devices, and then run the neccary core files. The big ones are X, FVWM95, the gnome desktop (Just the desktop, no icons, or panels, no virtual displays, nothing crazy... yet), and wine. Using glade, I will write little replacements for the ActiveX compents that are missing, (My computer, Control panel, etc) GTK will handle the windows "theme" as far as widgets go and fvwm95 is small, sleek, and gives you the right window dressings and a start button. I have here a compiled list of what I plan to add. CORE: Main Kernel -> Linux 2.4.1, USB and harware support big plus/framebuffer for startup screen http://www.kernel.org/ Dos support -> DosEMU 1.0.1 with FreeDOS .98, depending on dos support under wine http://www.dosemu.org/ http://www.freedos.org/ Windows support -> Wine, the latest http://www.winehq.org/ Graphic Display -> Xfree86 4.0.2 more graphics cards, the better font server http://www.xfree86.org DirectX -> Transgameing Explorer(GUI) -> modded FVWM95/Gnome desktop combo ftp://mitac11.uia.ac.be/html-test/fvwm95.html http://www.gnome.org Explorer(filelister) -> gmc (was Midnight Commander, swallowed by Gnome) http://www.gnome.org Explorer(Browser) -> Mozilla (activeX compent, full browser) http://www.iol.ie/~locka/mozilla/mozilla.htm http://www.mozilla.org/ DO-HICKIES & THINGAMABOBS: These are small apps that are written in gtk (possably quick glide apps) that mimic the function of native windows apps. My Computer -> GTK do-hickie that looks like My Computer Launches gmc and the contol panel do-hiokie. System -> GTK do-hickie that will list devices that are valid in /dev in a windows format, intermixed with kernal modules and stuff from kudzu. Network Neighborhood -> LinNeighborhood/Samba http://www.bnro.de/~schmidjo/ Trash -> Gnome's trash Display Properties -> GTK do-hickie that edits xf86config, xscreensaver, and fvwmrc is a windows fimilar way Dial-up Networking -> working for an ISP, I know this thing foreward and backwards do-hickie that writes chat/pppd scripts, easy! Control Panel -> Ugh! Do what WinME does. Make it simple unless you want complex. Start with date/time, internet options, display, printers, and totaly ignore add/remove programs for now. Complex will have date/time, display, fonts, internet options keyboard, modems, mouse, network, passwords, printers regonal settings, scedualed tasks, system Date/Time -> simple GTK app internet options -> working for an ISP know this foreward amd backwards too edits chat/pppd scripts Printers -> Wrapper for redhat's printtool w/ tweaks add/remove programs -> not gonna touch this with a 10 foot pole. maybe later fonts -> links to the font dirs in X keyboard -> edits keyboard properties and Xkeyboard settings who's config file escapes me for the moment. modems -> chat script tweaking mouse -> gtk app that pays with mouse bindings network -> know this back and foreward too, grabbs info from the loaded kernel modules passwords -> password wrapper for xdm, gdm, *dm password thingies regonal settings -> sets loocale varible sceduled tasks -> wrapper for editing the chrontab It's a big task, but I have faith in myself. I'm going to be build a "base system" tomarrow (Ceryix 133, 40M ram, Sound Blaster, Matrox graphics card, and a 814M HD) Feel free to comment. I have no web page on the porject yet, I don't want to call attention to myself in case it turns out to be a bigger project that I intended. Small DDraw problem

Hi all, After seeing the reports on cemw of Grim Fandango not working anymore, I decided to check it out. Install worked fine, but the game did not work. It stopped just after doing a SetCooperativeLevel. My interpretation of the 'DDERR_EXCLUSIVEMODEALREADYSET' error was that ANOTHER application already used this flag, not that it was already set for the current application. Anyway, removing this test fixed Grim Fandango. It now starts fine, except for some palette problems. If you agree, I will submit a patch that removes this test :-) Lionel PS: I found out that Grim Fandango eats up my X auto repeat (I need to do a 'xset r on' after)... I thought that this was removed in recent Wine versions ?

Explorer/shell question.

I don't personally use windows, but I have a lot of friends who do. I just showed a friend 98lite.net (which has apparently gone commercial in the last year or two; I was actually looking for the list of instructions the used to have on how to replace the 98 I.E. based explorer with the 95 filesystem only explorer and delete I.E. from the system). Unfortunately, the 95 explorer, being MS intellectual property, can't be included with 98lite, they have to have a copy of 95 (pre OSR 2.5) lying around. I vaguely remembered this list discussing cloning the filesystem explorer months and months back, so my next thought was to wander over to winehq and see if you guys had cloned the filesystem explorer in such a way it could potentially be cleaned up and used to browse the filesystem so I.E. can be deleted. I didn't find one here, so I'm guessing the outcome of said discussion was "no, we aren't going to do that", but it seemed to be a question worth asking anyway. So: has anybody simply cloned the 95 explorer yet? Would the clone run under windows itself? How deeply does it have its tentacles into the guts of the rest of the system? Fix to OpenGL for BadMatch issue with Alice

Hi Lionel, I recently remembered that I hadn't mentioned the below patch to you. This is something that we put in the last TG patch to fix an issue with Alice, but I'm not sure if the problem in question is the fault of the Wine OpenGL code or an issue with NVidia's OpenGL driver (I haven't really tried it on other drivers yet). Alice creates a rendering window, then walks through the pixel formats for that window's DC using DescribePixelFormat. The current implementation of DescribePixelFormat simply creates a new visual for each pixel format by calling glXChooseVisual. Under the NVidia libGL, at least, this creates a new visual even if there's already a visual that matches the requested parameters. Once we try to create a wgl context, the previous implementation was picking one of the newly created visuals, and initializing the glX context with that. An instant later, we get an X BadMatch error, since the rendering window that Alice is using was created with the default X11DRV visual, not the visual that was created by DescribePixelFormat. The patch below is a simple fix to just always use the X11DRV visual when creating contexts. Ideally we would somehow recreate the X11DRV window with the new visual, but I suspect that will have to wait for significant restructuring of the X11DRV. I didn't notice until later that you'd done a similar hack in X11DRV_ChoosePixelFormat, forcing the visual there to be the default. We could do the same thing for X11DRV_DescribePixelFormat as well, or we could simply drop most of the visual management code in graphics/x11drv/opengl.c and use my patch below. Novell filesystem support

Hello, I have been making Wine support Novell Bindery calls via the ncplib, so that I can get Pegasus mail to do mhs mail. But i've hit the brick wall, novell file operations on a window -> unix -> novell file system dose not work very well. So what needs to happen is make Wine know about other file system types other than dos / windows / unix. What I was thinking is, there must be some system that windows uses to register extra file systems and then use supplied functions for read/write/etc operations. Dose Wine also support this system, or should it be made to do this? If this is in place where in the code should I look for references. If it is not supported, is it something that is should be supported in the future( i.e. a clean implementation ) or is an ugly little hack ok. If doing a hack, what structures should I add the extra information to, what structures should I not touch. p.s. sorry if this has been brought up before, I found it hard to search the archives. Attached is a patch to implement EnumPrinterDataEx (which should let everyone be happy about where the PostScript driver's font substitution table goes). Since this is the first time I've implemented a "real" Win32 API, rather than just doing internal tweaking, I may have missed something that's glaringly obvious to the more experienced. Before I send this to wine- patches, I'd appreciate it if some folks would take a quick look and let me know what they think. Current Directory Strangely Affects Behaviour of Applications

I am trying to debug a game called Grand Prix Legends, running on wine with the transgaming patch. If just spent all day getting nowhere in winedbg because I couldn't get hold of what the game was doing. If I cd to the directory in which the game is installed (ie ~/win/sierra/gpl) and then run wine gpl.exe The program starts and fills the whole of my screen with a single black window. It sits there until I move the mouse, at which time it exits. I have just discovered that if I cd to the root of my c: drive (ie ~/win) and then run wine c:\\sierra\\gpl\\gpl.exe The program starts and I get a 640x480 window with the correct startup screen (I have "Desktop" = "640x480" in my config file). It is NOT managed (even though I have "Managed" = "Y" in my config file). However the program appears to partially work - in that a) The program responds to the mouse when I click on the correct parts of the screen, b) It runs a race with computer AI cars when I tell it too. Can anyone suggest why this subtle change might exist? [As an aside, the colours seem to be the negative of what they should be - but it could just be a completely wrong pallette, the program should respond to the keyboard, but all keys affect the underlying console window in which the game was started, and there is a multiplayer option where it should (at least) detect that I have a TCP/IP connection, but doesn't - can anyone say, are these known limitations of the transgaming patch?] Lastly, is the transgaming patch likely to be folded into the up to date CVS versions of wine anytime soon. I hadn't tried setting an explicit override for shlwapi in the DLLoverrides. Silly me, it never occurred to me that I could ADD MY OWN DLLs. However, I noticed that shlwapi is not in the default configuration for Wine. Perhaps somebody who isn't an Anonymous Coward as far as the CVS server goes should add it? To Francois: thanks for the quick turn-around. Kinda late over there, isn't it?

I've tried to install several programs under Wine (the most recent being Delorme's AAA MapNGo V6.0) and I consistently get this error: err:win32:fixup_imports No implementation for shlwapi.dll.0(StrRetToBufA) imported from shell32.dll, setting to 0xdeadbeef err:win32:fixup_imports No implementation for shlwapi.dll.0(StrRetToBufW) imported from shell32.dll, setting to 0xdeadbeef Always followed by the app calling StrRetToBufW and dying. It looks to me like this function does exist in the code. I've tried forcing my system to use the native DLL, to use the Wine DLL, to no avail. Problem with Pager control

While working on ComboEx with the 1/29/2001 CVS, IE4 no longer displays its menu bar. (Well, not really a menu bar, it is a Rebar with a Pager as the child and a Toolbar as a child of the Pager. The Toolbar buttons are the "menu" items.) If I revert the Pager code to the 12/29/2000 version (very limited functionality) then the "menu" appears and is usable. If law was mathematics this would be sufficient proof that DMCA is logical inconsistant since it would mean that some actions were both legal and illegal. In fact, *every* invocation of objcopy that leaves the .rel.stabs section in its output fails -- even a simple identical copy. As a side note: I've tried using the --debugging argument, which basically recreates the debug sections from scratch instead of copying them, and this fails completely with my toolchain -- it runs into an endless loop. The reason for this is apparently a compiler bug in gcc 2.95.2 that miscompiles a routine from objcopy by converting a recursive function call into tail recursion in an invalid way ... I still don't understand why your toolchain creates a .rel.stabs section in the first place. Could you check at which point this is created first (as, ld, ld -shared)? Any attempt to partition the set of devices in two parts will fail since you mathematically will be able to prove that they are equal and thus the arbitrary line chosen in the beginning doesn't really exist. However note that there are three solutions to the problem. 1. The DMCA protects nothing and are totally meaningless. 2. The DMCA are logically inconsistant and thereby null and void. 3. The DMCA will forbid digital rights management without authorization as well. The only thing that can save you is if you can pry a crack in it somewhere by find some kind of allowed digital rights management or circumvention because of some other reason, like constitional issues. If you even have one crack, then only possible case is 1, because of the reason given above. Note that 3 would mean that making an exact copy of some a device will be illegal if it contained any kind of digital right mangagement, thereby granting it a perpetual patent protection if it was hardware alternativly perpetual copyright protection if it was software. This kind of argument are not really new, however the arguments I have seen used it when talking about protected works. I'm talking about _devices_ that are authorized to "play" such works. Hi, I have an application that handles several text edit controls. At one point it flips from the first to the second (after you have entered the fourth character). This is done by a function, which does (simplified) this: { DWORD startsel,endsel; PostMessageA(hwnd1,EM_GETSEL,&startsel,&endsel); SetFocus(hwnd2); PostMessageA(hwnd2,EM_SETSEL,0,0); /* ... */ CallWindowProcA(hwnd,....); return; } According to the +relay,+edit trace the EM_GETSEL is executed way _AFTER_ the return from the function, so, since it uses stackvalues, it then smashes the stack somewhere else. My suspicion is that SetFocus() in Windows drains all posted messages by doing something like: while (PeekMessage()) { TranslateMessage(); DispatchMessage(); } but I do not really know. recording sound?

Has anyone tried recording sound? It works fine under Linux (with grecord for example), but I have I windows app that does a pretty simple record and playback. Audio playing is fine, but recording fails (I get a stupid meaningless windows dialog that says recording failed and that the error code was -8602 or something). Hi John, As i understand, Alexandre wants to get rid of the service thread completely. He rejected an async i/o patch of mine that used the service thread on these grounds. The server would also need to wait on the service thread somehow... something else that might be frowned upon. i'm pretty sure that currently there isn't any way to do this except use the service thread though :-( Perhaps it'd be nice to tie up all these memory issues with some kind of kernel patch... a way to read/write and generally mess with another process's memory that was broader and more efficient that p-trace. The printer setup dialog

Howdy, Since I see there has been a fair amount of activity on the printer stuff lately, I thought I would try submitting this patch to hopefully fix some things in the printer setup dialog box. I have been using this patch unchanged for about six months, on a couple of different applications under wine. The patch contains two chunks. The first chunk attempts to fix these problems in the Paper Size and Source combo boxes: 1) Every time the printer setup dialog is opened, the settings are set back to garbage settings. 2) If the paper size or source is changed, and then the printer is changed, the new printer does not get the new size and source settings even though it appears to from the dialog. The second chunk simply attempts to make the Landscape/Portrait buttons do something. They were there and could be clicked on, and all the supporting code for actually printing in a landscape orientation was there, but the actual code for making the buttons invoke something was for some mysterious reason missing. Now I don't quite understand why stabs need to be relocated, but I guess this could be a source of confusion. In any case, after I strip the stabs data using objcopy --strip-debug, I can subsequently use objcopy -N without problems. The problem might be caused by the objcopy -L step not correctly updating the debug info. Could you try adding a --debugging argument to objcopy in both localize_imports and strip_imports? I tested Ulrich's patch on current Cvs on a vanilla Suse 7.0 (gcc 2.95.2, binutils 2.9.5) The patch applied all right, built fine (I had to chmod +x strip_import though). I can run ForteFreeAgent with the patched Wine; the debugger starts all right and I can go to a breakpoint using the <dll name in uppercase>.<api> trick. Gerard

Hello! I'm currently debugging a database-application that uses the M$ Jet Engine 3.5. This db-engine does not behave very well. It opens an exisisting database-file (FILE_FLAG_OVERLAPPED is *not* set) and reads or writes using calls to ReadFile() and WriteFile() with non-zero lpOverlapped pointers. In this case calls to ReadFile() or WriteFile() return FALSE. IMO ReadFile() and WriteFile() should check whether FILE_FLAG_OVERLAPPED is set. Unfortunately there is no method to retrieve the full file attributes from wineserver. Is a new server call required? Best regards, Eric Kohl

I had forgotten that the TrueType fonts I have converted to Type 1 tend to print somewhat smaller than the Adobe/Ghostscript fonts. (I do see the problem on both my Ghost- script-driven printer at home and the PostScript printers at work.) Since people seem to use Arial and Courier a lot, the problem is emphasized; content that uses monospaced fonts also tends to suffer more when it is unexpectedly wrapped. So I think its mixing the two that makes things look really odd. For my particular situation, mapping everything to the "TrueType" fonts is probably the way to go, so I'll be motivated to get the user-defined mapping working. Which leads me to another, more dangerous, thought. It seems to me that life would be simpler for everyone if we could bring some consistency to the way that Wine's display and print subsystems work with fonts. What about a section in the configuration file that related Windows, X, and PostScript font names? In the old style, I would have suggested something of the form: Windows Font = X LFD, PostScript font name This would seem to be relatively straightforward to implement, and it would bring a small measure of sanity to the area.
