Hello Here's a better regression fix for the dinput-scancode patchset (the 0001 patch of that patchset caused NFS Underground to segfault since Wine 9.15 with the addition of a keycode loop in keyboard_create_device() because of DIPROP_SCANCODE stuff); I modified the existing 0001 patch to solve this by copying the duplicate object checks to that new loop (maybe I should create a separate 0003 patch to show the changes better?) Hopefully the patch can be merged before 9.16 to not re-introduce that regression after it has been worked around in wine-staging 9.15 Thanks

Hello everyone, I am looking to change stack size of Wine executable. Apart from specifying .def (which contains STACKSIZE value) file during compilation, is there any other option which is supported by Wine? Some kind configurable runtime option without modifying binary? [PATCH v5 00/28] NT synchronization primitive driver

This patch series implements a new char misc driver, /dev/ntsync, which is used to implement Windows NT synchronization primitives. NT synchronization primitives are unique in that the wait functions both are vectored, operate on multiple types of object with different behaviour (mutex, semaphore, event), and affect the state of the objects they wait on. This model is not compatible with existing kernel synchronization objects or interfaces, and therefore the ntsync driver implements its own wait queues and locking. This patch series is rebased against the "char-misc-next" branch of gregkh/char-misc.git. == Background == The Wine project emulates the Windows API in user space. One particular part of that API, namely the NT synchronization primitives, have historically been implemented via RPC to a dedicated "kernel" process. However, more recent applications use these APIs more strenuously, and the overhead of RPC has become a bottleneck. The NT synchronization APIs are too complex to implement on top of existing primitives without sacrificing correctness. Certain operations, such as NtPulseEvent() or the "wait-for-all" mode of NtWaitForMultipleObjects(), require direct control over the underlying wait queue, and implementing a wait queue sufficiently robust for Wine in user space is not possible. This proposed driver, therefore, implements the problematic interfaces directly in the Linux kernel. This driver was presented at Linux Plumbers Conference 2023. While some of the code has changed, I do not currently anticipate that it has changed drastically enough to affect those measurements. The gain in performance varies wildly depending on the application in question and the user's hardware. For some games NT synchronization is not a bottleneck and no change can be observed, but for others frame rate improvements of 50 to 150 percent are not atypical. The new locking mechanism involves taking a simple spinlock for normal "any" waits, and taking a device-wide mutex for "all" waits or when locking any object that is involved in an "all" wait. The mechanism was written by Peter Zijlstra. * Try to reword or clarify various parts of the documentation (patch 27), per Peter Zijlstra. * I did not rename NTSYNC_IOC_SEM_POST to RELEASE (like NT) although this was suggested by Peter Zijlstra, mostly because it's not clear to me that renaming an already committed ioctl would be fine. The API committed isn't actually usable yet, though, so if altering it would be fine on those grounds, I can revise this series to rename the function accordingly. * Similarly, I did not change the create ioctls to return the fd directly, although this was suggested and would be a bit simpler and cleaner, because NTSYNC_IOC_CREATE_SEM already exists upstream and returns the fd through a struct. Upcoming vkd3d 1.13 release

Hi all, As previously announced, the planned release date for vkd3d 1.13 is August 29. That means the public API will become frozen one week from now on August 1, and features will be frozen after August 15. As usual, if you're an upstream vkd3d developer, please do the following: - Keep an eye on Bugzilla for any reported regressions. - Review any API changes since the previous release. - Verify all vkd3d tests pass on your hardware/setup, and please send fixes if they don't. - Review and improve the documentation. - Apply your best judgment about which patches are appropriate for the current stage of the release process. I know there is also the GitLab version <https://gitlab.winehq.org/wine/wine/-/commits/master> but I prefer the old one. Can someone have a look and fix the (permission) issue? wine-staging wineodbc fix

Hello, I've noticed that the wine-staging wineodbc library fails to compile ever since it got introduced in commit 14f63f40e7c87dc87ca1dc64aaa66f344bada4da (but only for 32-bit) This is because the unixlib part of wineodbc requires linking to libodbc (which is rarely present on 32-bit) and because libodbc isn't present, there's a lot of missing symbols The Wine configure.ac does have some checks to prevent building of the whole odbc component if libodbc is missing (but that only works for odbc32, not wineodbc) To fix this issue, enable_odbc32 can be edited to enable_wineodbc in the configure.ac file (make sure to run autoreconf to actually include the fix in the configure script too) Thanks

How to add ICU support?

Hi all, I'm currently trying to get the current version of Logos (https://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=application&iId=771) running on Wine. One of the (many) problems is that newer versions of the app use the icu libraries that are part of newer versions of Windows (see https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/win32/intl/international-componen… ). As far as I could gather, the source code for the icu libraries as shipped with Windows is at https://github.com/microsoft/icu (see especially https://github.com/microsoft/icu/tree/master/icu-patches/patches for the patches that are applied relative to the upstream icu library). Implementing NtGetSystemInformation(SystemProcessorIdleInformation)

Hello, for the past couple of days I've been trying to get a program to run under wine, everything seems to function correctly except for a CPU stats window that errors every time it updates. After a few hours of debugging I traced it to NtGetSystemInformation and have been trying to write patches for wine to implement it. My only issue is that the program only uses certain parts of the output, and I'm not sure how to put together the structure for it, should I just name the unknown fields "ReservedX"? I'm also not 100% sure where to put the structure afterwards, since it doesn't seem to show up anywhere in MSDN (I may be using the wrong name, I assumed the structure name is just the enum name in title case like the ones that are documented). I apologize if I sent this to the wrong list, this is my first time contributing to wine and I'm still trying to figure things out. ~Niko

Proposal: changing the default bug status (from 'UNCONFIRMED' to 'NEW')

Howdy all, Currently, unprivileged users have their bugs set to 'UNCONFIRMED' by default (while privileged users have the option of 'UNCONFIRMED'/'NEW'/'ASSIGNED'). As a general rule, no one seems to care if a bug is confirmed ('NEW') or not. This often leads to confusion for users (for example recently, [1]), who think that because their bug is 'UNCONFIRMED', it won't get attention. Because this distinction is useless, I'd like to propose that we make a few changes to Bugzilla: * change the default status for newly submitted bugs to 'NEW' (here: https://bugs.winehq.org/editworkflow.cgi) * do a bulk status update of existing bugs from 'UNCONFIRMED' to 'NEW' * disable the 'UNCONFIRMED' status (here: https://bugs.winehq.org/editproducts.cgi?action=edit&product=Wine) Thoughts/concerns? I don't know of any application that definitely depends on either of these, and they're not documented behaviours, but Wine has implemented those behaviours and it would make me nervous to break them here. The part about passing the same event in "alert" and "objs" is not part of NT exactly (in NT the "alert" isn't even an event; it's a special bit of thread state; we just use an event for simplicity). Wait operations need to consume state, and while we could put that state in user space (and in fact we *do* have an out of tree patch set that kind of does this) that requires all that state to be shared across processes, which is a problem since we want processes to be isolated unless they explicitly share objects with each other. There's not a scalable way to achieve this, especially since you can share objects lazily. You also cannot do NtPulseEvent() this way. The aforementioned patch set badly emulates it and it does in practice break any application that uses it. Similarly there are some applications that do a weird "fake pulse" where they set and then immediately reset an event from the same thread, and expect that to always wake.

I would prefer 10.15 in particular so we could drop support for native (i.e. macho) 32-bit binaries. That would allow us to use modern Obj-C runtime features (e.g. auto-synthesis) and eventually consider ARC. It's also worth noting that winehq's gitlab CI runs 10.15. Upcoming vkd3d 1.12 release

Hi all, The planned release date for vkd3d 1.12 is May 28. The development branch will become increasingly frozen as we're nearing that date, starting with a freeze of the public API after April 30. Features will be frozen after May 14. If you're an upstream vkd3d developer, please do the following: - Keep an eye on Bugzilla for any reported regressions. - Review any API changes since the previous release. - Verify all the vkd3d tests pass on your hardware, and please send fixes if they don't. - Review and improve the documentation. - Apply your best judgment about which patches are appropriate for the current stage of the release process. If you're a downstream user of vkd3d, please test your applications for regressions, and file bug reports if you find any. If you're the maintainer of a Wine module that (indirectly) depends on vkd3d, like e.g. d2d1, d3dx9, d3dcompiler, or any of the core Direct3D modules, that includes making sure the unit tests still pass with the new version. It exists because implementation in user-space, using existing tools, cannot match Windows performance while offering accurate semantics. It is implemented entirely in software, and does not drive any hardware device. This interface is meant as a compatibility tool only, and should not be used for general synchronization. Instead use generic, versatile interfaces such as futex(2) and poll(2). Synchronization primitives ========================== The ntsync driver exposes three types of synchronization primitives: semaphores, mutexes, and events. A semaphore holds a single volatile 32-bit counter, and a static 32-bit integer denoting the maximum value. It is considered signaled when the counter is nonzero. The counter is decremented by one when a wait is satisfied. Both the initial and maximum count are established when the semaphore is created. A mutex holds a volatile 32-bit recursion count, and a volatile 32-bit identifier denoting its owner. A mutex is considered signaled when its owner is zero (indicating that it is not owned). The recursion count is incremented when a wait is satisfied, and ownership is set to the given identifier. A mutex also holds an internal flag denoting whether its previous owner has died; such a mutex is said to be abandoned. Owner death is not tracked automatically based on thread death, but rather must be communicated using NTSYNC_IOC_MUTEX_KILL. An abandoned mutex is inherently considered unowned. Except for the "unowned" semantics of zero, the actual value of the owner identifier is not interpreted by the ntsync driver at all. The intended use is to store a thread identifier; however, the ntsync driver does not actually validate that a calling thread provides consistent or unique identifiers. An event holds a volatile boolean state denoting whether it is signaled or not. There are two types of events, auto-reset and manual-reset. An auto-reset event is designaled when a wait is satisfied; a manual-reset event is not. The event type is specified when the event is created. Unless specified otherwise, all operations on an object are atomic and totally ordered with respect to other operations on the same object. Objects are represented by files. When all file descriptors to an object are closed, that object is deleted. Char device =========== The ntsync driver creates a single char device /dev/ntsync. Each file description opened on the device represents a unique instance intended to back an individual NT virtual machine. Objects created by one ntsync instance may only be used with other objects created by the same instance. ioctl reference =============== All operations on the device are done through ioctls. A pulse operation can be thought of as a set followed by a reset, performed as a single atomic operation. If two threads are waiting on an auto-reset event which is pulsed, only one will be woken. If two threads are waiting a manual-reset event which is pulsed, both will be woken. However, in both cases, the event will be unsignaled afterwards, and a simultaneous read operation will always report the event as unsignaled. .. NTSYNC_IOC_READ_SEM Read the current state of a semaphore object. Takes a pointer to struct ntsync_sem_args, which is used as follows: * sem: Ignored. * count: On output, contains the current count of the semaphore. * max: On output, contains the maximum count of the semaphore. .. If ``timeout`` is U64_MAX, the function will sleep until an object is signaled, and will not fail with ETIMEDOUT. * objs: Pointer to an array of ``count`` file descriptors (specified as an integer so that the structure has the same size regardless of architecture). If any object is invalid, the function fails with EINVAL. * count: Number of objects specified in the ``objs`` array. If greater than NTSYNC_MAX_WAIT_COUNT, the function fails with EINVAL. * owner: Mutex owner identifier. If any object in ``objs`` is a mutex, the ioctl will attempt to acquire that mutex on behalf of ``owner``. Similarly to NTSYNC_IOC_WAIT_ANY, all objects are nevertheless marked as acquired. Note that if multiple mutex objects are specified, there is no way to know which were marked as abandoned. As with "any" waits, the ``alert`` argument is an "extra" event which can terminate the wait. Critically, however, an "all" wait will succeed if all members in ``objs`` are signaled, *or* if ``alert`` is signaled. In the latter case ``index`` will be set to ``count``. As with "any" waits, if both conditions are filled, the former takes priority, and objects in ``objs`` will be acquired. Unlike NTSYNC_IOC_WAIT_ANY, it is not valid to pass the same object more than once, nor is it valid to pass the same object in ``objs`` and in ``alert``. If this is attempted, the function fails with EINVAL.

Is the concern about poor performance when ntsync is in use, or is nesting a lot of spinlocks like that something that could cause problems for unrelated tasks? I'm not familiar enough with the scheduler to know if this can be abused. I think we don't care about performance problems within Wine, at least. FWIW, the scheme here is actually similar to what Windows does (as described by one of their kernel engineers), although slightly different. NT nests spinlocks as well, but instead of using the outer lock like our "wait_all_lock" to prevent lock inversion, they instead sort the inner locks (by address, I assume). If there's deeper problems... I can look into (ab)using a rwlock for this purpose, at least for now. In any case making wait_all_lock into a sleeping mutex instead of a spinlock should be fine. I'll rerun performance tests but I don't expect it to cause any problems.

Consider task A does a wait-for-all on objects X, Y, Z. Then task B signals Y, so we do try_wake_all_obj() on Y, which does try_wake_all() on A's queue entry; that needs to check X and Z and consume the state of all three objects atomically. Another task could be trying to signal Z at the same time and could hit a task waiting on Z, Y, X, and that causes inversion. The simple and easy way to implement everything is just to have a global lock on the whole device, but this is kind of known to be a performance bottleneck (this was NT's BKL, and they ditched it starting with Vista or 7 or something). Instead we use a lock per object, and normally in the wait-for-any case we only ever need to grab one lock at a time, but when we need to do a wait-for- all we need to lock multiple objects at once, and we grab the outer lock to avoid potential lock inversion. > Where I seem to note that both those functions do that same list > iteration. [PATCH v4 00/30] NT synchronization primitive driver

This patch series implements a new char misc driver, /dev/ntsync, which is used to implement Windows NT synchronization primitives. NT synchronization primitives are unique in that the wait functions both are vectored, operate on multiple types of object with different behaviour (mutex, semaphore, event), and affect the state of the objects they wait on. This model is not compatible with existing kernel synchronization objects or interfaces, and therefore the ntsync driver implements its own wait queues and locking. Hence I would like to request review from someone familiar with locking to make sure that the usage of low-level kernel primitives is correct and that the wait queues work as intended, and to that end I've CC'd the locking maintainers. == Background == The Wine project emulates the Windows API in user space. One particular part of that API, namely the NT synchronization primitives, have historically been implemented via RPC to a dedicated "kernel" process. However, more recent applications use these APIs more strenuously, and the overhead of RPC has become a bottleneck. The NT synchronization APIs are too complex to implement on top of existing primitives without sacrificing correctness. Certain operations, such as NtPulseEvent() or the "wait-for-all" mode of NtWaitForMultipleObjects(), require direct control over the underlying wait queue, and implementing a wait queue sufficiently robust for Wine in user space is not possible. This proposed driver, therefore, implements the problematic interfaces directly in the Linux kernel. This driver was presented at Linux Plumbers Conference 2023. The acquisition of multiple spinlocks will degrade performance. This is a conscious choice, however. Wait-for-all is known to be a very rare operation in practice, especially with counts that approach the maximum, and it is the intent of the ntsync driver to optimize wait-for-any at the expense of wait-for-all as much as possible. * NT mutexes are tied to their threads on an OS level, and the kernel includes builtin support for "robust" mutexes. In order to keep the ntsync driver self-contained and avoid touching more code than necessary, it does not hook into task exit nor use pids. Instead, the user space emulator is expected to manage thread IDs and pass them as an argument to any relevant functions; this is the "owner" field of ntsync_wait_args and ntsync_mutex_args. When the emulator detects that a thread dies, it should therefore call NTSYNC_IOC_MUTEX_KILL on any open mutexes. * ntsync is module-capable mostly because there was nothing preventing it, and because it aided development. The primitives include mutexes and semaphores, like our internal locks. I don't really want to compare them to futexes because futexes don't have internal state. However NT's primitives are *way* more complicated. The big part of it is they consume state in a way that usual wait functions don't, and as if that weren't enough, you can do operations with them like wait-for-all (wait for all objects to be simultaneously signaled and atomically consume them) or pulse (signal an object without changing its state). None of this can be expressed with poll or futex. You can't even express those operations with wait_event() etc. We really need to replace the entire wait queue and use schedule() + wake_up_process() directly. ntsync_q is the wait queue struct in this. Solving the slow review problem with AI

Hi all, As we all know, the Wine project suffers from a shortage of maintainers/reviewers and timely reviews. This has always been a thing, so it's not something recent. While it's all too easy to dismiss this and say we simply need to get more maintainers, the reality is that it's not that simple, or we would've done so by now already. Since Generative AI and Large Language Models (LLMs) are all the rage these days, I figured it would be a good opportunity to join the trend. I propose a LLM trained for reviewing Wine code with full authority over the entire review process, so we can focus on writing code (and having it ripped out by the AI, for good reasons of course). The plan is to have it completely integrated with gitlab and the review process automatically, with the goal of it becoming the ultimate—and only—maintainer for the project. I've been training one for a while now with cloud services, though it needs more fine tuning of course, and it has no access to gitlab so far. Due to the training data, it exhibits a bias of review styles by famous reviewers such as Linus Torvalds (from the Linux kernel), so expect a lot of productive rants. I also gave it the capability to close MRs if the code is simply unsalvageable, though obviously only when it gets authorization to do so. In my tests, 98.657% of the code I sent it was classified as "garbage" and "unsalvageable", proving its effectiveness. The code tested were random patches and commits that were upstreamed to the Wine project, which explains a lot why we still haven't reached feature parity with Windows… Gone will be the days of waiting weeks to even get a response to your MR; now you'll just get bashed almost immediately and most likely even have your MR instantly closed "as a lost cause" if it stinks that much for the all-knowing LLM. I mean, computers don't make mistakes, so it must be right. For example we have MR !5432, where the LLM instantly rambled about how the old code was even upstreamed in the first place when it was clearly incorrect and didn't do what it was supposed to, but praised the MR for "finally doing something about it." I did tell it the new code doesn't compile, but that's obviously a compiler bug, or so it says. Next I plan to give it the ability to automatically submit bug reports to compiler vendors because obviously they aren't working right. Unfortunately I'll need to find a way to tone its language down a bit because I'm certain they'll be classified as spam—they're not ready for the AI revolution yet. Ideally we'd need to fine tune this a lot more on way more powerful hardware if it sounds like a good way forward. Thoughts?

[PATCH v2 00/31] NT synchronization primitive driver

This patch series introduces a new char misc driver, /dev/ntsync, which is used to implement Windows NT synchronization primitives. This was previously submitted as an RFC [1]. Since there were no major changes requested to the last RFC revision, I've stripped the RFC prefix. One particular part of that API, namely the NT synchronization primitives, have historically been implemented via RPC to a dedicated "kernel" process. However, more recent applications use these APIs more strenuously, and the overhead of RPC has become a bottleneck. The NT synchronization APIs are too complex to implement on top of existing primitives without sacrificing correctness. Certain operations, such as NtPulseEvent() or the "wait-for-all" mode of NtWaitForMultipleObjects(), require direct control over the underlying wait queue, and implementing a wait queue sufficiently robust for Wine in user space is not possible. This proposed driver, therefore, implements the problematic interfaces directly in the Linux kernel. This driver was presented at Linux Plumbers Conference 2023. Hmm, that's an interesting question. Currently only Wine supports x86 and ARM, as the only architectures supported by modern Windows. On the other hand, that hasn't always been the case, and there's been some desire to use Wine (as a porting tool) on architectures that Windows doesn't support, and out-of-tree ports to e.g. PowerPC to that end. Perhaps more saliently, there's no reason I'm aware of that this code *can't* run on any architecture, and Wine (or another NT emulator) may grow support for more architectures in the future. I (with my limited experience) don't see a reason to artificially limit ourselves, especially if the driver is disabled by default. --Zeb
