MS' hidden API

Dear wine developers, I have one question on the development of wine. Long(one or two years) ago I've heard that Microsoft got some hidden APIs in their products of various windows, and they use these APIs in their own applications. I wonder if this is still a problem on their recent product like windows XP. If it is, I guess wine will not be able to run such MS applications which uses hidden APIs. Is this right? And, is wine designed(or its goal is) to run all applications(including MS product and non-MS product) that runs on windows? Please forgive me if this problem has appeared in the past. dynamic .fon conversion

Hi, I am new to Wine develop, I wish to investigate and join, the following is the topic I am interested in. Does Wine develpers planning to implement .fon files support? I mean loading it dynamically? Since Xfree86 4 supports true type fonts, and most of the Linux distribution are now using XFree86-4 . We can actually load these fonts into the Xsever dynamically at run time providing we have some dynamic conversion between the font files. David

Unicode, i18n support

Bug 98 - Unicode, i18n support is quite vague. How could I flesh it out? For instance I am thinking that we could convert this into a metabug and have one sub bug for each control that still needs to be unicodified. So: * which are the common controls that still need to be unicodified? * are there other controls that need to be unicodified * do common dialogs need work? As usual the goal is to make the individual tasks more visible so as to give inspiration to potential contributors, and so that we have a better idea of our progress and what remains to be done. Another issue, which would fall more in the i18n part is BiDi support. What is the scope of this? CreateProcess design

before latest Alexandre patch, CreateProcess was able to use stuff like: CreateProcess(NULL, "foo.exe --wine_opt -- --foo_opt") --wine_opt was seen by foo as options for wine, whereas foo_opt could be a command line option for foo (in foo, the command line would only be "--foo_opt") since last night, this is broken: - --wine_opt is still seen as a wine option - however, the command line passed to foo isn't cleaned up... we get the whole line "--wine_opt -- --foo_opt"... what should we do. I think Alexandre long term option is to really get rid of the options on the command line and use the WINEOPTION(S) env var (we could still have a wrapper script to do the conversion) should we adopt this right away or clean up the command line option ? as a consequence, you no longer can use any CUI program in the user/graphical mode, including winedbg - it still work as a unix console though A+

make test leaves 2 wine processes running

Hi, Running make test with a desktop window leaves ok but 2 processes are still running and the desktop windows not closed. They cannot be closed when I use the cross or the close command, i must kill them. problems with the alt button and window switching

Hi! If I change the window with keyboard (eg with ALT-TAB), then when I switch back to the wine window wine still thinks that the ALT button is depressed. I happens, because the key event of pressing ALT arrives to the wine window before the switch. And when I return to the wine window (by keyboard or mouse) it acts like if the ALT button were depressed. The solution is that the key states should be reset when the wine gets back the focus or loses the focus. That is more exactly in windows/winpos.c in the function WINPOS_SetActiveWindow when the hWnd is NULL ! That is the case when switching from a wine window to an non-wine window. So I have found the place :), just I dont know whats the preferred way to reset all the key states to not pressed. WineLib newbie question

Hi all. I'm wondering how difficult it is to port an application to Linux with WineLib. There are quite a few N64 emulators with source code on Windoze and I want to port one of them to Linux, because there is no decent native emulator, First, is it possible that things which don't work well with Wine, work when they are ported using WineLib ? DIB engine

The DIB engine was discussed quite a lot at WineConf. I am now trying to summarize these discussions to update bug 421 - Implement a DIB engine. http://wine.codeweavers.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=421 Is the following accurate, complete, etc? Comments? Other ideas? Any volunteers? This was discussed quite a bit at WineConf. Ideas that were floated around are: 1. Have X export the required API --------------------------------- XFree86 4 has all the needed code, for all bit depths and layouts we care about. We could try to have the X guys export this in the form of an API ala Xft. Wine could then link with this library to implement the DIB engine (or dlopen that library). * Is the needed API already available? * If not, are the XFree86 guys willing to export it? * Almost everyone is using XFree86, but what about people who don't (embedded devices, Wine on Solaris...). We need a fallback. * We won't have to maintain that code which is a good thing, although it is not supposed to change much once written. * Will we be able to do all that we need with that API? Probably yes since it can be expected to match the X API quite closely and we are abel to use the X API. 2. Copy the relevant X code into Wine ------------------------------------- Since X has all the code and that code is under the X11 license we could copy it all into Wine. * This means we will have to maintain the code ourselves, although it is not supposed to change much once written. 3. Copy the relevant code from MicroWindows/NanoGUI to Wine ----------------------------------------------------------- MicroWindows/NanoGUI also has code that could help us bootstrap our DIB engine. We probably don't want Wine to depend on these projects but we could copy their code into Wine. * Are the licenses compatible? * Do they support all the bit depths and layouts we care about? * This means we will have to maintain the code ourselves, although it is not supposed to change much once written. 4. Copy the relevant code from GGI to Wine ------------------------------------------ GGI also has similar code. Seems like the file isn't being created. (Uwe Bonnes helped me with this). But we disagree what part of WINE (or outside WINE) is wrong. The first part of the log shows a CreateFileA that is unable to create a file. This API works fine when the file is in the same dir as the application (had tested it). The second part of the log shows the last screen I get after start the program (MessageBox API). MFRTS32 is a .dll the program calls. We thougth of there too. But this program works under Windows. Everything is in the path. Both wine.conf and Linux. I could reproduce the error in Win2k this way: Created a set of programs (L1, L2 and L3) that will run one after one with conditions. If the field in L1 is fulfilled then we jump directly to L3. Else We fulfill the field in L2 and then jump to L3. In details: L1 would creates a file with a name if the filed is fulfilled an L3 NEEDS to know that name. If we had to run L2 then the file will be with another name and L3 will get data from that file. But the file ins't created in neither of the cases. So a screen shows up: "External path string <G-PATH> not found. File FILE-LINUX." That message is the same I get under WINE: "External path string <UPCW56-DEV-DATA-DIR> not found. File IYF029." Refers to a file (IYF029), that exists (located in the ./data dir) but was not filled with data it need to work, or incorretly filled. Both G-PATH and UPCW56-DEV-DATA-DIR are variables of a file that has a number of them inside. Improving the regression testing infrastructure

I know regression testing isn't as interesting as doing real development, and so I appologize with once again spamming the list with regression questions... As I've been writing tests (only for the last week or so), I realized that as we get a lot more tests, it will be very difficult to keep track of what is being tested, and what is not. I'd like to propose a list of which functions for each DLL are being tested, which file tests it, as well as any comments on the current tests. Currently, there is no great way to do this. I may use several functions in a directed test which I am not actually testing (for instance I've found it necessary to retrieve the page-size using GetSystemInfo, but my tests have nothing to do with this function, and so writing a directed test for it is a task for another day). Thus just grepping for which functions are used in a test is not sufficient. Also, I have found that some functions, or even specific task functions are very difficult to test, and so I've been leaving these out so that perhaps people ore skilled than myself could take a crack at them late (A good example is testing inheritance with CreateThread. It is a task that is beyond my capabilities at the moment, at least until I can find a good way to test CreateProcess...this would be much easier if Windows had something equivalent to 'fork'). In any case, I've tried to be thorough about commenting what I do and don't test, but it would be a lot more convenient if this information was more easily parsed than trying to find my comments intersperesed through the tests. So does anyone thing that creating a easily parsable list with the state of the current tests is this a reasonable thing to do, and would creating a simple file in each /tests directory with the information be good enough? If so, I can add one to my next test, and update it with what I've done so far. In general, while Francois' presentation is a good place to get started, I think it'd be a lot easier if there was a document off of winehq with recommendations on how to build, test, and document tests. Lowering the difficulty threshold, is more likely to draw more people to do so. Thanks, .Geoff

Unicode header control used by listview

Hallo, some application made from a zip archive "4957.exe", that uses the listview.c sample from microsoft floating around since at least 1996, uses commctrl headers and shows only the first letter of the text in the header tabs. This is caused by (wine) listview.c creating the header windows as unicode, but in the commctrl initialization the header class was registered as ascii. When the header text is inserted, it is translated to unicode. When it is read out for display, it is treated as ascii, as the unicode flag of the header control isn't set. So reading of only one character succeeds. So either we set the header unicode-flag when creating the header control in listview, or we register the header class as unicode. Appended patch switches the charset after creating the control in listview.c. Does this sound right? Feedback welcome! I get the message *** Note: Your system appears to have the FreeType 2 runtime libraries *** installed, but 'freetype-config' is not in your PATH. Install the *** freetype-devel package (or its equivalent on your distribution) to *** enable Wine to use TrueType fonts. even though I do have freetype-config in my PATH. It seems related to the test dnl Check that we have at least freetype/freetype.h if test "$ac_cv_header_freetype_freetype_h" = "yes" -a "$wine_cv_fttrigon" = "yes" (Note: comments, message, and code do not agree) I don't seem to have the <ft2build.h> and <freetype/fttrigon.h> files. cvs doesn't build .. my fault?

Hi, A couple of things: First, I've noticed cvs didn't build for me anymore. The problem was because I removed the header files for ncurses (ie removed the ncurses-devel RPM). The file dlls/ttydrv/bitmap.c then failed to compile. Having had a look at the code in ttydrv, its fairly obvious it wont build without either curses or ncurses installed. A simple patch (wine-diff-1) provides a better error message. It shouldn't be needed (with the next patch), but might help bug finding in the future. But, shouldn't wine simply abstain from building ttydrv if a (n?)curses package isn't available? I've attached another patch (wine-diff-2) that does that. AFAIK, there's no knock-on effects. Second problem, when attempting to verify the build-failure on a different machine (hathi), it failed, but in a different part of the build! It only succeeded on the third machine (romulus) On hathi, a RH-7.0 (w/ Linus-2.4.3 kernel) I got: > make[2]: Entering directory `/disk/hathi1/paulm/wine/dlls/ntdll' > LD_LIBRARY_PATH="../../unicode:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH" > ../../tools/winebuild/winebuild -fPIC -L../../dlls -o ntdll.spec.c > -spec ./ntdll.spec > make[2]: *** [ntdll.spec.c] Segmentation fault (core dumped) [...] After some investigation, it transpires that gcc on hathi (the RH-7.0 machine) builds broken winebuild programs (the unicode library was fine). The RH-7.1 (romulus) could "fix" the problem by recompiling just the winebuild directory. The problem turned out to be because I had old gcc-2.96 RPMs installed. how to unsubscribe?

Hello, First of all I'd like to say I'm sorry to both you people with this. I tried some stuff to unsubscribe by going to the default urls of sourceforge lists etc, but that didn't helped. I went to wine.sf.net, but didn't found any public mailing list, and I can't remember where I subscribed to this list. The reason I want to unsubsribe (temporariliy) is that I'm off for vacation, and don't feel like reading tons of wine-devel mails when I'm back ;-) So, where can I unsubscribe, and resubscribe (for when I'm back)? Or even better, is there an option like with sourceforge lists where I just edit my preferences and check the box which says I don't want to receive any mails anymore temporarily? wineinstall patch

This patch has some significant changes to wineinstall, the most notable being that we no longer let the user run wineinstall as root user and that we use su -c"command" to run 'make install' and to modify the users /etc/ld.so.conf file if necessary. I wanted to get feedback from people on these changes. Hi, Thanks for the quick response. I did search the wine source code and found stubs for DisconnectNamedPipe and SetNamedPipeHandleState these two Win32 calls in dlls/kernel/sync.c. What is the purpose of this sync.c file. Is this file linked into Kernel32.dll? According to the Changelog in Wine relaese directory, the DisconnectNamedPipe was implemented on 2001-8-23. What does it mean when it says the function is implemented in the ChangeLog? These questions will help me to understand Wine community's practice and approach in resolving problems. Announcing CrossOver Office - official support for Microsoft Office and Lotus Notes

Hi everyone, I thought I'd let you guys know that today we have launched version 1.0 of our next product, which we are calling 'CrossOver Office'. Basically, we've tuned Wine so that it installs and runs Office and Notes very nicely, and we're selling that in a nice bundle. Since it's LGPL, the Wine code to do that will be coming back to Wine shortly. Please give us a bit of time; we're going to be overwhelmed here shortly, and I'd like to make sure that as the code comes into Wine, each developer gets proper credit for their work. I did want to extend an offer to everyone here, though. wineserver not terminating

Hello All, I have recently noticed that after starting up a wine instance, that upon closing the appliction sometimes the wine instance is still a running process and I have to kill it manually. I am running the latest version of wine as well. Any ideas as to what is going on here and how this can be fixed. Hello Dante, I must be confused. I know about the different types of filesystems that can be made and mounted on the Linux VFS, but doesn't Wine allow you to specify in the ./wine/wine.conf the filesystem type? In Windows NT for example, the user can assign permissions in a similar way that Linux allows. the same is true for Windows 2000 and I suspect for Windows XP as well. So this is really related to wine and how it interacts with the psuedo filesystem. Is this correct? After adding some printfs I discovered that jack was locking up at a call to pthread_create. Jack also uses plenty of other pthreads functions so I tried to implement as many as possible. socket question

I'd like to throw this out there for anyone more familiar with sockets in wine than I am. My application sets up it's socket to send it a window message when the event happens, but the event takes too long and so the app turns off the notification, and the event becomes orphaned.

I looked at the trace log you attached to your email, and recognised (unfortunately) familiar copy protection output :-( Is anyone working on implementing what would be needed to successfuly run copy-protected softwares ? I ran into the same problems when I tried to play The Longuest Journey with Wine. I disassembled a large part of the code and rewrote it in C to try to understand what was going on. If anyone is interested I can send my work by e-mail (I won't send it to the list as the files are quite big). Basically, the copy protection scheme I studied used the following technique. One of the sections in the PE file is encrypted. The decryption key is generated from the content of the other sections. The process of decrypting the encrypted section tried to detect if a debugger is running, and fails to run properly if so. This results in the inability to decrypt the PE file if the unencrypted section is modified or if a debugger is running. There must be some code to detect if the application CD is genuine but I've never been able to go past the decryption part. To detect if a debugger is running, the following actions are performed (in no particular order): - the code tries to open some files using CreateFileA : "\\.\SICE", "\\.\SIWVID" and "\\.\NTICE". This fails as the SoftICE VxDs are not loaded, so no problems there - it also tries to read/write to the debug registers. this produces an unhandled exception. should be trivial to write an exception handler to support that (right ?) - the code writes binary code to the interrupt vector table (at address 0 - division by 0 handler), and then cause to the division by 0 interrupt handler to be called by dividing a value by 0. - the TIB (Thread Information Block, which address is located at fs:0) is read. The following C code illustrates the technique (which I don't understand :-) bool detect_debugger_from_TIB { char *pTIB; asm ( "mov %%fs:0x18, %", "=g"(pTIB) ); if ( pTIB[0x20] == 0 ) return FALSE; else return TRUE; } - another debugger detection technique uses int 0x68, functino 0x4300. If the content of eax when returning from int 0x68 is not 0x4300, a debugger is present. This is not performed on some NEC Japanese systems, which probably use int 0x68 for another purpose. - the last attempt to detect a debugger uses int 0x01 (enter SMM/ICE mode), which checks if an external hardware emulator is connected to the processor. I haven't been able to understand what the code is supposed to do. There might be some other anti-debugging techniques, I gave up after 2 weeks of disassembly :-) Hope these observations will help someone. Laurent Pinchart

Hello All, I am really starting to get involved with the wine project and am trying get up to speed so that I can start to implement some of the FIXME functions as soon as possible. I was just wondering if there was also an type of Wine project that would allow MAC to run on Linux as well, but not in the respect of having to load the MAC os like VMware? Hack/work-around for cursor problem on sparc-solaris

Hi all, I've managed to come up with a work-around for the cursor problem on sparc-solaris. What I'm not sure about is whether this should be checked in as a general fix. The problem was that if X11DRV_GetCursor (dlls/x11drv/mouse.c) is called with a NULL CURSORICONINFO pointer, it would explicitly create a completely empty cursor... This doesn't seem like the right thing to do to me - it seems to me much better to create a default cursor from the provided X11 cursor font, and use it. The question is, does anyone rely on this behaviour? From what I've seen of the code, this only happens if there is a problem loading the windows cursors, in which case it would be much more sensible to show a default cursor than no cursor at all. If someone is relying on this to create an empty cursor, it might be better for them to explictly create a CURSORICONINFO that creates an empty cursor. What do people think - should I submit this as a patch? Warren

Duplicated functions?

Hi all, I've been digging around trying to track down my cursor issues, and I noticed that there seem to be 3 identical implementation of the function find_entry_by_id implemented in dlls/user/exticon.c, dlls/version/resource.c, and loader/pe_resource.c. Is this intentional? It seems like the danger for the the functions to get out of sync is quite high (especially since there aren't sufficient comments indicating that other versions need to be updated). If it isn't intentional, I'll open a bug about it (I don't really have time to fix it right now), otherwise I'll add a couple of lines of documentation indicating that there are multiple versions that need to be updated to each of the functions comments. pthreads issues?

I've been working on a wine driver for the jack audio server, jackit.sourceforge.net. The concept of the server is to open audio ports and setup a callback function that will be called whenever the server needs more audio data. Everything works fine until the point of starting up the client and starting the calls to the callback function. With the latest cvs version of the jack server and some changes to the driver I haven't been able to get the driver to start the client up successfully, it just hangs after the below first two pthreads errors although I suspect this may be due to the same issues as before. Previously only about 50% of the time would the client be started up correctly, the other half of the time it would report failure to connect to the server and I would have to kill wine and restart a few times before it finally would work. I got errors like below: ~/c/Program Files/winamp$ wine Winamp.exe FIXME:pthread_cond_init FIXME:pthread_cond_signal FIXME:pthread_cond_wait fixme:ntdll:RtlNtStatusToDosError no mapping for 00000102 It appears that something went wrong between wine and wineserver communication and that strange 102 got stuck in there. I've also had strange X errors and another person reported: "I'm having problems getting jack to work with a GTK+ app. 3 times out of 4 when I start I get: engine has shut down socket; thread exiting Xlib: unexpected async reply (sequence 0x102)!" Cursor issues on sparc-solaris

Hi all, I alluded to this in a post on Friday, but I'm going to ask about it explicitly now. In the sparc-solaris port, most bitmaps are now showing up fine (with a few fixes in wrc), but when the mouse enters a wine window the mouse cursor disappears. The mouse still works if you can figure out where to click it. I've been tracing through the code, trying to figure out what is going wrong. with a breakpoint in LoadCursorA, I've stepped down through the resource loading code, until I get to PE_FindResourceW. It calls find_entry_by_nameW, which calls find_entry_by_id. The inputs seem fine, but the resource id (0xC) doesn't show up in the IMAGE_RESOURCE_DIRECTORY, which has only 3 entries, with ids 4, 5 and 6... I'm afraid I'm at a bit of a loss so far. My instincts say that the id is fine, and that something is breaking during the loading of the image resource directory - I'm trying to trace back where the image resource directory is populated, but I haven't found it yet... Any suggestions would be distinctly welcome... I'm hoping to get a linux box set up here today, and maybe tracing through the same process under linux will indicate the problem. Thanks! Warren

Winelib only allows you to *recompile* win32 apps on *nix platforms. So I can take win32 source code, and compile and run it on solaris, hence no emulation is required... > Have you managed to run something a bit more complicated then notepad? again - > I (and I'm sure others) will be happy to hear about this stuff... Not yet. I've built the winemine, notepad and clock sample programs so far... My intent is to try to get the cursor issue fixed, and then worry about porting the rest of our code... Warren

OT: Buggy fonts

I'm afraid this is a little off-topic, but every time Wine starts, as it builds the font metrics, xfs-xtt (the font server) dies. I'm assuming there's a font (or few) in the system which it doesn't like, or which are corrupt. It makes wine rather annoying to use (and means that if I kill wine and restart the font server, it thinks the metrics are already done and ignores most of my fonts!)
