RFC: sfd2ttf

Hi, Here's a first version of an sfd2ttf tool based on fontforge-20051205. You can dwonload it from [1]. It consists of 5 files (with Makefile) and has a size of 500K. There's still some dead code lying around, I think I can bring it down to 300K-400K. Is this acceptable? SFD reading was quite easy, the code was well seperated. TTF generation was a bit harder. I decided to output TrueType, with bitmap tables from OpenType. The others ttf variations (full OpenType or even aat (Apple Advanced Typography)) are not supported, as it would make the tool a lot bigger (factor 2-5 or so) and i believe it's not needed (right?). Wine and process "names"

Good day, everybody! I have recently done two things: A. I stopped trying to get Wine to use SDL for a graphics display -- the entire idea just sucks. B. Upgraded to 0.9.12 This has presented me with something quite odd Windows programs running in Wine had their argv[0]'s exposed to Linux. Let me clarify: When you run 'ps', the first word in the "CMD" field is usually a program's argv[0] and is referred to as the process's "name", but of course you all know that. It seems that Windows processes have their names exported to Linux in the same way, I literally had this in the 'ps' output: 13885 pts/1 00:00:21 C:\windows\notepad.exe Is this a new behaviour of Wine 0.9.12, or have the virus writers finally caught up with us? -- The real problem with C++ for kernel modules is: the language just sucks. -- Linus Torvalds

[Wine] Required Fontforge versions

This is not a question email, but one that states the minimum required Fontforge needed to build Wine. Treat it as third-party documentation. Versions of Wine up to 0.9.10 need fontforge-20050624; Never use anything older. Versions 0.9.11 and 0.9.12 require something newer. Newbie git experience: resetting local git tree back to an earlier state

This is a little success story. I thought I'd post it to encourage other people to try Mike's tree via git. I just started using git so I could track Mike McCormack's tree. I first followed the instructions at http://wiki.winehq.org/GitWine to get a winehq tree, then followed Mike's instructions at http://www.winehq.org/pipermail/wine-devel/2006-April/047208.html to grab the latest changes. The commands I used on my Ubuntu box were, all in all: sudo apt-get install git-core git-doc git clone git://source.winehq.org/git/wine.git wine-git cat > .git/remotes/mmbranch <<EOF URL: http://mandoo.dyndns.org/wine.git Pull: refs/heads/master:refs/heads/mmbranch EOF git fetch mmbranch git pull . mmbranch Everything went smoothly; it was rather fabulous. Then I ran into a regression, and wanted to roll back to Mike's tree as of a certain patch, http://www.winehq.org/pipermail/wine-patches/2006-April/026126.html I gather the right command for this is "git reset", so I read the man page. It wants a "commit-ish" as the argument. (Boy, that's helpful.) Looking at that patch, I saw its filename was an md5 sum, so I figured maybe that was the "commit-ish", and tried $ git reset --soft b32ae7a40c601427fea7cb9f145138221030f869 fatal: Needed a single revision Crud. At this point I punted, sent an email to James asking for help, ate a cookie, and periodically re-read google and the man pages. Eventually it dawned on me that you can specify a particular commit by how many back from the head it is, e.g. HEAD~5 is 5 back from the tip. I also stumbled on the command "git log", which shows you all changes, most recent first. Sure enough, the change I wanted was eight back from the head. So I tried $ git reset --soft HEAD~8 And voila, it worked; "git log" now showed the desired change as the latest! (Whew. I thought I was going to drown in man pages for a while there.) Annoyingly, "make" did nothing after this, but I knew the changes I wanted to revert were all in one DLL, so I just removed that DLL's .o files and ran make again. I feel a bit more comfortable with git now! - Dan

DDraw, wined3d (d3d8, d3d9) and OpenGL32 in Mac OSX + stack fudging -- x86 only

Whow I havent posted in a while... Gottta job -- no more college (but I have to finish my Masters Thesis... crap)... Ok back to wine ------- (Mac OSX X86 ONLY) Some of my friends an I have been working on wine after work and have managed to put together some patches OpenGL dynamic loading -- Mac OSX does not need to dlsym every ogl entry point -- it handles that for you... -- so numerous apple specific changes to make that work right GLX FBConfig -- not supported by mac glx -- faked inside of glx with choosevisual (~80,000 calls to choose visual with various pixel formats) -- this can be done better with agl or cgl or ANYTHING but x11 glx Stack fudging -- mac requires 16 byte aligned stack windows does not -- this leads to illegal instructions (aligned wrongly) -- until gcc can handle this I have a temporary solution to realign stacks using inline asm (fragile and dangerous -- but better than crashing) GLX Root Window -- Wine uses the fact that a root window exists in x11 in many places... -- But no one wants to run the x11 root window on their mac (what the b&w checkerz are ugly?) -- So I have some fixes for that too -- basically make a button and use its context for querying quartzdrv -- from darwine -- I got this to compile and load -- but its not very useful -- it makes white boxes winecoreaudio -- from darwine -- I got this to compile and load -- but its not very useful -- it crashes ALOT I think thats all -- WHEW.. ATM -- We have the glx root window fixes and fbconfig fixes in for ddraw and d3d and ogl I have only put the stack fudging asm blocks in specific functions ---------- So what is the next step? Can these changes go into the wine tree (barring the stack fudging) Are people interested in these kinds of fixes? ------ Also what has Oliver Stieber been up to lately?
