Announcing Wineconf 2006, urgent need for head count

Hi folks, I am pleased to announce that Rob Shearman has arranged for us to have Wineconf in his home town, Reading, in the UK. It will be held at the University of Reading: http://www.fmd.rdg.ac.uk/res/CommercialAccommodation.asp It will be on the weekend of September 16 and 17. We have a wrinkle we need your help on. That is, as we make our deposit (which we need to do quickly), we have to tell them how many rooms we want to reserve. The have a good deal on rooms (40 pounds/night, which is quite good, afaict). The trick is that we have to pay for all the rooms we reserve ahead of time; we can't ask for 50 rooms and then only use 43. We have to pay for all 50. We may be able to ask for 50 rooms, and then get another 3 or 4, although that's not guaranteed. So, *if you want a room at Wineconf*, please fill in this form ASAP: http://www.winehq.org/site/wineconf/survey06 If you're not sure you'll make it, but think you might, we have a choice for that too <grin>. Questions about Wine

Hi! I have a question and some reminds about Wine. 1.) When it will be all applications and games supported on 100% ? 2.) Why wine doesn't accept my own config at all? 3.) Add more options to Winecfg. It will be fine and welcomed. 4.) I have small fonts in some apps (size about 4 and it has curious look) 5.) Wine doesn't link new installed apps to my desktop and "start menu" My system is Fedora Core 5 and KDE as window manager

Just want to make a comment about the current status of the project

I've been really looking at wine for the last couple of months or so. Last little bit I've been helping by doing some testing and filing bug reports. I must say the developers of this project have done an amazing job. Its increadible how close you all are. If you can at least get code associated with making install shield based installers and other installers work flawlessly in the next little while this project will set the being a major thorn in Microsofts side when they bring out Vista. This project has the potential to really deflate them. If anything could be a major encouragement to you this no doubt should be. Thanx guys.

Temporary wine.git tree

Hi, Since Alexandre is lying on the beach in Greece and there'll be a gap between commits, I've made my Wine tree available and will be committing patches from wine-patches to it. You can pull (merge) these changes into your current Wine GIT tree it as follows: git fetch http://mandoo.dyndns.org/wine.git master:mmbranch git pull . mmbranch I'll send Alexandre a all the patches in the tree when he returns, but his tastes may differ to mine... :) Hopefully this will help prevent development from dropping to a snail's pace for two weeks. First patch: Regedit Multi-String Value

Hello folks! I'm new to Wine development, and I've just completed my first patch. I hope I could get some advices to make sure I'm heading in the right direction. Just a bit myself now to clear up a few things: I'm a first year college student who realized this week-end the Google Summer of Code was back again. So, I thought I should definitly give it a try. I started to look around to eventually stumble on the Wine page, which immediatly kept my attention as the type of programming it requires interested me the most. So, I already had experience using Wine, but none regarding Wine development. I downloaded the source and started exploring it since then. There seems to be a lot of exciting projects one could work on for Wine, I might send an application for a project, but so far, I only want to keep exploring before preparing anything else. I tried to code something to get used to the project organization, so I started with something really simple, which is the patch I am proposing here. It allows Multi-String Value edits in Wine's regedit! It is quite simple and definitly not concerning Wine's core code, but I thought it'd be a good start. If anybody wants to try it and comment, I'd be really glad to hear from you! I'll keep you updated as I adventure deeper in my Wine exploration! Thanks a lot, Philippe Paradis

Open Invention Network

Hello, I've just read an article on Linux Weekly News, which I guess might be interesting for Wine: http://lwn.net/Articles/178673/ (How Mono got into Fedora) I'll try to summarize: Basically, Novell bought Commerce One when they went bancrupt. Commerce One had some important patents related to XML webservices. Novell donated those to a newly formed organization called "Open Invention Network". OIN gives royalty free licences to companys and individuals who agree not to sue certain open source projects for violating their patents in turn. (http://openinventionnetwork.com/pat_linuxdefpop.html - Wine is currently not on the list). The interesting thing is the following. If a project, which is on this list, is sued for patent infringment, then it is allowed to use the OIN patents in a countersuit. I hope this isn't old news. SOC project

Hi folks, after I implemented NTLM authentication using samba's ntlm_auth for last year's SOC, I'm considering entering again this year. Now what I wanted to as was the following. I've recently started to look into the GENSEC library samba4 has to implement SSPI authentication and signing/sealing, as the latter is impossible to do with ntlm_auth. Now, would you consider this to be too cheesy to do as a project for summer of code? If yes, I would of course try to think of something else I can do, but I'd really like to see SSPI doing all that's possible on win32 one day. And I think GENSEC is the way to go. So far this has the issue of GENSEC not being under the LGPL, but I've already talked to Andrew Bartlett about this, and I'm currently writing a proof of concept application that GENSEC is usable from outside the samba source. Once I have that talking to SSPI on the windows side, I guess I can convince him to relicense GENSEC as LGPL. The backup plan to that would be to add a small wrapper program and use a stdio interface to GENSEC similar to the solution with ntlm_auth now.
