Cannot run wineinstall

It displays the message: " You are running wineinstall as root, this is not advisable. Please rerun as a user. Aborting. " However it is not possible to install anything on Ubuntu Linux if you-re not root. The command: $ sudo ./wineinstall does not run after passwd enter because of the message above. Wine automated testing update

Hi Folks, At the last Wine conference, I volunteered to find a home for the WineTestBot that Ge's brother has been hosting, and to take over the Buildbot that Dan and Austin have been so diligently maintaining. This is an update on that project, mostly to help keep my procrastinating self moving it along. First, we have a lovely set of hardware; 4 servers, in a dedicated rack, with a dedicated static ip to the outside world. One server is the gateway, 2 are dedicated Linux test systems (with nice fast processor + gpus), and one is a beefy system capable of running many VMs. The plan was to move the existing VMWare based WineTestBot to this hardware and simply get the existing system up and running on the new hardware. Here we hit our first snag; the VMWare folks are not willing to provide a permanent license for VMWare to us. So, we've shifted gears, and are exploring whether something like qemu + kvm would be a sufficient alternate. I've done a little of this work, and Maarten is hopefully going to help me try converting the existing VMs to see if we can save any hassle by doing a conversion. In parallel, I learned a great deal about buildbot and the buildbot system that Dan has built. There are two especially valuable and useful functions provided by this buildbot: the first is essentially a patch watcher; a process that catches simple mistakes (e.g. build errors on different architectures, and so on). The second is more powerful and is encapsulated by the 'dotests.sh' shell script. The dotests.sh script does a good job of basically running make test and noticing any test failures outside of 'the usual ones'. There is an infrastructure for Buildbot is a good tool, and I invested a lot of energy into it (as have Dan and Austin). However, Alexandre has persuaded me that we should first explore integrating the dotest.sh functionality into the existing WineTestBot, as that would allow us to have a very simple clean web page, and would also allow us to integrate most cleanly with Alexandre's back end tools. Of course, WineTestBot is Perl code, and my Perl fu is low. So I have recently asked Francois to help with that effort as well. So the basic plan is as follows: 1. Test qemu/kvm with a few Windows versions to see if it'll work. 2. If so, modify WineTestBot to use qemu instead of vmware. (This is 'easy' because the WineTestBot code nicely isolates the VM functions, but 'hard', because VMWare provides some APIs that may have to be replicated). 3. "Complimentary" msvcrt?

Hey, I apologize for the flood of "newbie" questions coming from me lately :-) At the very least, I'll be giving Winelib a decent challenge, and perhaps we could improve it a bit... Now, I've seen that Wine re-implements MSVCRT. However, this is a drop-in MSVCRT.DLL replacement, and it's incompatible with the rest of the GNU toolchain; for example, the GNU libstdc++ barfs on trying to include its own <wchar.h> and ending up including the msvcrt/wchar.h instead. I'm looking for something more humble -- a library for easy porting, implementing those functions not implemented by glibc itself -- e.g. _wfopen, _wgetenv. In fact, many MSVCRT functions can be made available by simply #define-ing them to their glibc counterparts. (Of course, this should be done carefully.) The main goal of this library should be source-level compatibility. Does such a thing exist? P.S. I know "real men" port their code to "real glibc", but I believe in taking small steps for bringing Linux into our codebase, thus decreasing friction with the rest of the developers.

I just ran into a CAD app whose 64 bit version runs better than its 32 bit version on Wine (the 32 bit version hangs with http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=31358 but the 64 bit version gets past that and seems to actually do something). Not very important, but kind of cool.

Is it simply because nobody has dealt with it? In any case, I've implemented Alexandre's change locally (in tchar.h). Now I'll be trying to use winelib's msvcrt with my code. It seems like a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" kind of thing. One issue I'm having now is wine/msvcrt being in the system includes path, thus causing libstdc++ to load winelib's <wchar.h>. Of course, this didn't go too well :-) My goal is to have a Linux app that's, generally speaking, a native app. I have the cooperation of the codebase developers, so they can follow directions to keep the code reasonably portable. At the same time, I don't want to burden them with mundane changes, so if Winelib can bridge over the two worlds sometimes, it'd be great. Perhaps we can have tchar.h operate in two modes: 1) a MSVCRT mode, where all the MSVCRT goodies are available, 2) a glibc mode, where it tries to map as many functions to glibc as possible?

Incompatibilities between different versions of msvcp dlls

Hi, There are many small differences between functions exported by different versions of msvcp. Currently only msvcp60 contains a partial copy of msvcp90 dll but it needs to be done for other dlls as well. There are classes that are very similar but have different virtual functions table depending on version of the dll. E.g. ctype class (doesn't contain *_s functions in msvcp71 and msvcp100) and basic_streambuf (in msvcp100 it contains _Lock/_Unlock and lacks *_s functions). In current way of implementing such differences it will lead to keeping a copy of ios.c and locale.c files in msvcp60, msvcp71, msvcp90 and msvcp100. The changes in code are minimal in these cases (e.g. in ctype class case it's enough to remove _s functions in vtable and change offsets in call_* macros for msvcp71/msvcp100). Do you have any ideas about solving this problem? Is it acceptable to add version specific defines to make the files identical between dlls? Piotr

So here's a detailed explanation. The app in bug #17037 calls GetDriveType on each drive from A to Z looking for a CD drive. It appears genuine GetDriveType returns DRIVE_CDROM even if no disc is in the drive. Let's suppose D is the letter mapped to your CD drive. Calling GetDriveTypeW( L"D:\" ) will first try to get a handle from open_device_root which fails. The last error is STATUS_OBJECT_PATH_NOT_FOUND, hence the bug. In fact, open_device_root calls NtOpenFile with \??\D:\. Following the call chain, the culprit is nt_to_unix_file_name_attr which calls stat() on "/home/<yourlogin>/.wine/dosdevices/d:/". This file doesn't exist because the drive has no mount point but "/home/alex/.wine/dosdevices/d::/" does exist. Either I had to change nt_to_unix_file_name_attr to call stat(D::) in case where stat(D:) fails or use the mountmgr. And as get_mountmgr_drive_type was already called in GetDriveType, I though moving the call before open_device_root was simpler and less invasive than modifying nt_to_unix_file_name_attr. Is it the proper way to fix the bug ? Any idea on how to get that one in ?

Investigating iexplore/activex issues

Hi All, I've recently begun working at VCA technology on an IP security camera system. I'm mostly doing embedded linux stuff, but bhe code I'm working with uses an ActiveX control to show the video and the overlaid annotations. I've doing quite a lot of experimentation trying to get the page work correctly on Wine. So far the results have been rather disappointing: wine git-head: wine builtin iexplore - page loads blank, though wireshark shows that html+js has been received. Various ole related fixmes. IE7 & IE8 installed to seperate prefixes - IIRC page fails to load wine 1.4 wine builtin iexplore - page loads, but activex control fails to display. Does anyone have any suggestions for how I can better investigate these issues? And what is the status of ActiveX in wine - is it likely to work at all? Thanks Joel

Any chance you could add an HTML5 mode? http://praegnanz.de/html5video/ shows a bunch of HTML5 video player components, and lists which ones have Flash fallback for old browsers. You could turn it on if you detect a Linux client, and otherwise use the old activex solution.

Hi, what can I do to get this in committable shape? I don't see how it can be reasonably split up; tests are in place. I've noticed I forgot to remove the L prefixes on character constants, which I'll correct. I'll gladly fix any other style issues. The function _could_ be implemented using strto(u)l instead of using its own conversion function, but that would require the removal of some tests as "too strict". I'm working on WineTestBot[1] and I was checking for reliability issues so I ran it through a subset of the patches on Wine's web site[2]. Before doing that I checked that it would not spam the patch authors or the patches web site status. But I missed the CC to wine-devel! I have now fixed that oversight and modified WineTestBot[3] so that by default it won't send emails to anybody but the site administrator (me in this case). Wine's support for reporting calling conventions

In dlls/dbghelp/dwarf.c, there is this snippet of code which appears to hard-code the calling convention to CALL_FAR_C. Does Wine not support reporting a function's calling convention correctly then? Is it a limitation of DWARF or just that it is not implemented? A copyright question to wine developpers

Hi, To my understanding, wine is a reimplementation of the MS system. As far as I understand, you take MS public headers and reimplement their functions. If that is how it works, then how do you deal with copyright? The MS headers certainly come with a copyright clause: how is it possible to redistribute these headers with wine? The reason why I ask this: I just rewrote an opensource implementation of a closed-source library. This opensource implementation is meant to be fully compatible with the closed source one: I reimplemented all the functions provided by their header, and anyone using the closed source one should be able to use my library as a replacement. My problem, though, is with the distribution of the header: Since I want to be fully compatible with the closed-source implementation, I have to, somehow, use the same header. I could probably modify it so that is *looks* different, but for the compiler, the API *needs* to be the same. Since you seem to have the same problem with wine (and you probably dealt with it succesfully), I wanted to ask you how you are solving this problem. Do you "rewrite" the headers? Rethinking WineConf

Hi All, This past Wine conference, while great fun as always, was not as well attended as Wine conferences in the past. So I would like to stir up trouble by suggesting we rethink WineConf. For those that have not attended, the Wine conference has been a mostly annual affair since 2002. It is open to all, but is advertised as being aimed at Wine developers. About 35 people attend each year. It's been in Minnesota about every 3rd year, and is otherwise 'normally' somewhere in Europe. I see the primary goal as creating human bonds between otherwise anonymous people (aka going to the pub). It's a bonus if it also spurs resolution to tricky issues, or motivates people to get more done. So I'd like to ask folks to brain storm with me. How could Wineconf be different? If you've never been, what would encourage you to come? If you've been to a technical conference recently that you thought was well done, what did they do well? Anything we could emulate? Hi all, COM clean up is going well now (thanks Michael!) and after recent conversation about wincodecs clean up, I had an idea about how to get rid of even more casts. We could use widl to teach C a bit more about interface inheritance, so that child->parent interface casts would work in similar way as current obj->iface cast. I experimented a bit and wrote a prove of concept patch for widl (see attached widl.diff). With this patch, COM interfaces become unions in form like this: #ifndef WIDL_TYPE_SAFE_C_INTERFACE interface IWICBitmapFrameDecode { CONST_VTBL IWICBitmapFrameDecodeVtbl* lpVtbl; }; #else union IWICBitmapFrameDecode { CONST_VTBL IWICBitmapFrameDecodeVtbl* lpVtbl; IWICBitmapSource base; }; #endif This is an opt-in macro based solution (so compatibility with standard C interface is not a problem). You may see how this may be used in the attached example of patch (wincodecs.diff). Sadly, it has its drawbacks. Having interface as union instead of struct breaks pretty sane assumption that interface==struct. Also there is no portable way to statically initialize the interface for object-less static interface implementation like: IMyInterface iface_instance = { &MyInterfaceVtbl }; Since using this union based may be controlled per-file, it may not be such a big deal, but I personally really like such constructs, esp. in tests. If we decide to use this solution, there are further decisions to to (it's just a prove of concept now!): - Naming convention. Is 'base' good? Should we use IIfaceName_iface instead (seems too long) - Sometimes &iface->base.base.base constructs will happen. Should we have all parents, instead of only direct parent, in the union, so that we can do iface->IUnknown_iface instead? I don't have strong opinion myself yet, so I'd like to hear others' opinions. Dear Wine developers, Bug 24389 documents an application crash due to the unimplemented function msvcr90._wtoi_l. I have been looking into how to resolve this problem. I see three workable options: 1. Implement msvcr90._wtoi_l by copying the code from ntdll._wtoi to msvcrt, ignoring the locale parameter for now. 2. Forward msvcr90._wtoi_l to ntdll._wtoi via msvcr90.spec, ignoring the locale parameter for now. 3. Implement msvcr90._wtoi_l as a stub function in msvcrt that always returns 0. Any of these options would fix bug 24389. Which one should I work on? -Alex

I disagree with many of the choices in this series (for example, I think casting an interface pointer to an inherited interface is fine, and replacing that with QueryInterface just adds unnecessary additional logic), but I don't think any semantics have been changed and overall it's a good cleanup.

Hi I'm trying to use the TANITA Bodyvision software (http://www.tanita.co.uk/index.php?id=158) under wine. The software is supposed to read its data from an SD-Card. But under wine it cannot find the SD card. I managed to find out what it takes so that the software finds the SD card. Please see the attached small sample to see how the software iterates the drive letters, and how it determines a eligibile media using (data.MediaType == RemovableMedia). The reasons why this does not work are manyfold. Here are some events which happen when inserting the card. * The drive is reported using udisks. This creates a symlink in dosdevices to the raw block device /dev/sdf * The partition /dev/sdf1 is mounted automatically in /media/XXXX-YYYY * /dev/sdf and /dev/sdf1 are not user read/writable. * wine creates a drive letter symlink for /dev/sdf * no symlink is created for /media/XXXX-YYYY * When you open wine explorer, the drive does not show up in the drive list This means that the drive letter assigned for the sd card will not be returned in GetLogicalDrives(). When the symlink to the mountpoint is added manually, following output is produced: DbgPrint says: Drive f fixme:ntdll:server_ioctl_file Unsupported ioctl 70000 (device=7 access=0 func=0 method=0) DbgPrint says: DeviceIoControl failed When get_dos_device is made to unconditionally return STATUS_BAD_DEVICE_TYPE, the ioctl is properly delivered to harddisk_ioctl DeviceIoControl succeeds: DbgPrint says: Drive f DbgPrint says: Removable: 0 But still, the device is reported as non-removable. The reason for this is probably that udisks reports /dev/sdf as removable, but not its partition /dev/sdf1. Is it worth for working on patches for these issues, or is this completely impossible with the current architecture? Eduard

Your subject implies that device units and pixels are not the same thing, but my understanding is that except for metafile HDCs (which we don't handle correctly anyway, and I suspect native doesn't either), they are. You're scaling sizes based on graphics->unit. Yet the conversion in get_graphics_transform (which we were already using in GdipMeasureString to convert between world and device units, indirectly through GdipTransformPoints) already takes graphics->unit into account. So I'm concerned that the original conversion apparently wasn't sufficient, and that you've added more code instead of fixing it. And I'm still concerned about whether the sizes returned by GdipMeasureString will match the size of the strings rendered by GdipDrawString with this patch applied.
