Hi folks, I'm in the process of writing a couple of cmd tests (on top of master, not of my currently pending patches), and I at times have problems where none of the tests is actually performed, but the test suite still returns without any error indication, e.g. batch.c:306: running TEST_BUILTINS.CMD test... batch: 7 tests executed (0 marked as todo, 0 failures), 0 skipped. which many more tests should be performed After checking with "winedbg --gdb" it gets a SIGSEGV I tried to reproduce with a mimimal output file and expected file, and get weird results. Windows can open *.doc files with command $explorer example.doc Several applications (for example russian accounting application "1C") use this command. Wine can't do it. I've briefly talked to Jeremy and Alexandre about this loss and the idea came up to have something on the winehq frontpage for a while. Jeremey also mentioned to mark Greg's life and contributions to Wine at Wineconf this year. Alexandre mentioned potentially hosting the winetestbot at codeweavers in the future. Both the frontpage remembrance and the potential hosting somewhere else has been discussed by me and Arno and will not be an issue. Behavior of SHChangeNotify

To try to implement copy-paste for shell folders, I used SHFileOperation for the actual copy. SHFileOperation calls SHChangeNotify to notify listeners about changes to the file system. But I noticed that the shell view would not update correctly if it was at 'C:\' but it would if it was at '/home/user_name/.wine/drive_c/'. In the end I traced this to the fact that in the first case the shell view calls SHChangeNotifyRegister with a pidl of the form <Desktop|My Computer|C:> while SHFileOperation is using SHChangeNotify to send a notification to those listeners registered on pidls of the form <Desktop|/|home|user_name|.wine|drive_c>. This makes it such that the shell view doesn't always get the notifications it expects. I can think of a couple of ways to fix this. 1. Have SHChangeNotifyRegister normalize all file system pidls to ones rooted in the unixfs. 2. Have the shell view register on a unixfs pidl. I would like to know if either of these is a good solution, or if there are better solutions. I can also write a quick test to demonstrate the problem if necessary. -- Jay Yang

There are 14 matching items that show up. Many of them are variations on 'Microsoft Windows Compatibility Layer'. One has '(meta package)' at the end, another has '(dummy package)'. They each have a little sub-title like 'wine', or 'wine-gecko', or 'wine1.3-gecko'. Why isn't there just a single app clearly called 'Wine'? I didn't really have any clue which of these various software packages is the real Wine, but the one at the top--the 'meta package'--had the most ratings and ranked highly at 4.5 stars, so I decided to give that one a shot." Second problem - he expected to run a program called Wine, found wineconfig, did something with it, and then got back on track: "Once it completed installing, I went to the Applications lens on the Unity bar and typed in Wine. It claims I have three apps installed that fit that description: Configure Wine, Uninstall Wine Software, and Winetricks. I was hoping to actually run Wine, but given these three options it seems that Configure Wine is the logical first choice. I clicked Configure Wine and the Wine Configuration console popped up (go figure). At the bottom of the Applications tab, it specific which version of Windows to emulate...I mean be compatible with. It defaults to Windows XP, but I changed it to Windows 7... OK. Now, I am ready to run some Windows software, right?" Third problem: he expected Office 2010 to install and run Fourth problem: he couldn't even run the installer: " I opened up the folder from my Windows drive where I store downloaded software, right-clicked my Microsoft Office 2010 installation executable and clicked 'Open With Wine Windows Program Loader', and...got an error message. Something to the effect that this software is not marked as executable. Windows logoRunning Windows software in Wine proved convoluted and elusive.I checked with Google, and found a helpful walk-through from Psychocats.net called Using Wine on Ubuntu. Apparently, the fact that the software is an EXE is not obvious enough, so I have to first right-click the file, go into the Properties, and click a checkbox designating the file as executable. Seems convoluted. The problem is, every time I click the checkbox my check disappears. It won't let me make my file executable. I tried looking for more help on Google to no avail. I tried a couple other executable installation files, but couldn't mark those as executable either. I assume it is a permissions thing--like I need to somehow access the file permissions with root privileges in order to be able to make those changes. That is just a theory, though. So, no Windows software running for me just yet." Ouch, ouch, ouch.

Just wondering. apt-get build-dep wine1.3 does not load binfmt-support and lib32nss... Installation of natspeak requires them. The installation script tries to grab them but failed for me.

How to do single-step debugging while testing?

Hi I'm trying to figure out how to single step through the code. I've looked at the winedbg and gdb information on winehq, but still can't figure out what to do. I normally run tests by issuing: $ ../../../tools/runtest name_of_test Is there a way to run the test in a debugger, so that I can single step through the functions that the test calls? Sometimes it's a pain to get a reliable test for controls that are made from another ones, because interaction between them differs or creation order differs between native a wine's. If it's not worth it, it's ok to add simple separate test application to reproduce that, link it with a patch or as another message to wine-devel. Just to have more information about what this patch fixes.

Anyone watching wine-bugs already knows this, but just in case: As AF suggested in http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=24745#c11 bugs about apps needing msvcr90 or the like should identify the particular function in the bug subject line, if possible. There are still some bugs that simply say "app X needs native msvcr90". When the particular function that bothered them is fixed, and the app is verified to get further, that bug's subject line should be updated to identify the function that was fixed, and the bug should be marked as fixed. If the game still doesn't run because of some other function, a new bug should be filed.

I can't speak about the conceptual correctness of this patch, although my gut feeling says that you're right. You don't need wined3d_wndproc_mutex_(un)lock. Just use EnterCriticalSection / LeaveCriticalSection directly. wined3d_mutex_lock exists because it is exported from wined3d. Using OpenAL Soft's DLL in place of Creative's, in real Windows, would yield the same bug experienced in Wine.

Hi, This is a brain core dump before going to bed for the other d3d developers. I did some testing concerning the vertexdeclaration, vertex shader, stream sources and pixel shader states. Currently the first 3 are hard linked, and the pixel shader is also tied to the vertex shader. I was interested which states are invalid how often, and where separating the states makes sense. Basically about 40% of all draws only the pixel shader is invalid. In another 30%-50% the pixel shader and stream source are invalid, and in about 10% to 20% of all draws all 4 states are reapplied anyways. There are relatively few cases where the vertex declaration and vertex shader are changed alone. So what does this mean? We'll have to spit away the pixel shader and stream sources states. The good news is that the stream sources are easy to separate - when the streamsources are invalid only reapply them, if the vdecl or vshader are dirty reapply shader+decl+streamsrc. The bad news is that applying the stream sources is the most expensive part. The pixel shader is already somewhat separated. Changing the pixel shader will only reapply the vertex shader, but not stream sources or other vdecl-related states. Separating vertex and pixel shaders will be tricky and not fully possible on some drivers(needs GL_ARB_separate_shader_objects or ARB shaders) and all shaders(Shader Model 3.0 varying passing) In addition to this we'll have to make parsing of the vertex declaration cheaper. I'll think of something... I'll also write some quick and dirty patches to see how much performance we really get out of these changes. limits on the number of events, windows and threads?

Hi, I vaguely remember reading about a quite low limit on the number of event objects that a thread can hold because each one is said to take up one bit in some 32 or 64 bit mask. That was then invoked as a reason to allocate e.g. event or window objects for as short a time span as possible. Is there such a low limit on the number of events (or other types of handles) than one thread can hold in native or in Wine? Thank you for your help, Jörg Höhle

dead-lock free design

Hi, there are two guidelines that I identified while trying to prevent dead-locks with critical sections and access to uninitialiased memory in Wine. In callbacks, detect when it should not run anymore and exit *early*. void CALLBACK mycallback (void* user) { struct mycbdata * mycb = user; EnterCriticalSection(mycb->lock); if(!mycb->started || mycb->shutdown) { LeaveCriticalSection; return; } /* else do actual work */ This is best done after EnterCS, because the critical section is the most likely place where the callback thread will have been preempted. Note that this doesn't prevent mycb from pointing to free'ed memory. You may only deallocate resources once you've made sure that the callback cannot be invoked any more. 2. Use two phases to end cleanly. Delegate part of the work to a later stage. Pause is not Stop. Stop is not Close. Close is not Shutdown. Shutdown is not DLL Unload. My current patch applies this idea partially. DeleteTimerQueueTimer() is called within a CS, whereas Wait() is called afterwards (which is safe because the mmdevapi object is not used any more). The original deadlock happened because DeleteTimerQueue and Wait were combined in one call, within the CS. Waiting for completion is *essential* with the DeleteTimerQueueTimer API because that's the only means to ensure that callbacks are done. Then only can you free the memory that mycb above points to. A variation is to partition the work among AudioClient_Stop and AudioClient_Release. In Stop() call DeleteTimerQueueTimer() but Wait for completion of the callbacks in Release(). Alternatively, in Stop() use ChangeTimerQueueTimer(DueTime=INFINITE) to prevent firing new callbacks and use DeleteTimerQueue in Release(). I didn't write my patch that way yet because it requires some attention in AudioClient_Start() when restarting the timer callbacks. Why does the rule work? Functions likes Play/Pause/Stop typically prevent concurrent access (either from the app or from internal callback threads) using critical sections. At Close/Release time, the typical assumption is that there's no more concurrency -- at least from the side of the application. Partitioning the work allows for plenty of new possibilities. E.g. one known bug in MS-Windows is that MCI/winmm's Stop() may take a lot of time, freezing the application. However, if Stop() simply sends a stop signal to the player thread, without waiting for the thread to actually stop, it can be plenty fast. Likewise, if mmdevapi's AudioClient_Stop() simply sets This->started to FALSE, the callback will still be ticking, but not disturb. Fast too if it calls DeleteTimerQueueTimer() but delegates the Wait to AudioClient_Release(). One drawback is that resources will be allocated for longer than with the naïve approach. Sometimes, the partitioning decision depends on what state you want to guarantee after Pause, Stop or Close. This is rarely documented. E.g. for MCI's audio player you want to make sure that an immediately following Open won't fail when Wine's winmm ALSA or OSS drivers only support opening one device at a time. Regards, Jörg Höhle

app freezes during WM_KILLFOCUS

I've been chasing a bug for a few days, and finally have a good idea of what is going on. When a program brings up a modal dialog box in response to a WM_KILLFOCUS message, the program will freeze. I've attached a simple test case, all boilerplate except for: case WM_KILLFOCUS: MessageBox(hWnd, _T("Killing Focus"), _T("Note"), MB_OK); in the main event loop. If you run the program and then give focus to another application, the messagebox will pop up and then the program will become unresponsive. What is happening is: - x11drv gets a FocusOut event and calls the event handler, which ends up SendMessage-ing a WM_KILLFOCUS to the program. - The programs's code creates a modal dialog like the MessageBox above, and enters the dialog's event loop, which winds up calling GetMessage which calls MsgWaitForMultipleObjectsEx to get more X11 events. - X11DRV_MsgWaitForMultipleObjectsEx executes this: if (data->current_event) mask = 0; /* don't process nested events */ where data->current_event is true since we're still handling the FocusOut event. Since we're not processing nested events, we'll never be able to process the usual events like keys or mouse events which could exit this nested event loop. This type of error occurs in a few places in our application, where a WM_KILLFOCUS message to an edit box triggers some input validation and displays an error on failure. This works correctly in the normal case, where the user tabs out or clicks on another control in the dialog box containing the edit control -- since everything stays in the same top-level window, there is no FocusOut event from X11 and the WM_KILLFOCUS is generated internally by wine in response to, say, a KeyEvent. I think these key or mouse events are just posted to the windows message queue, and the X11 event handler has already exited by the time the application gets around to processing the ensuing WM_KILLFOCUS. But in the case where focus is lost by clicking outside the dialog containing the edit control, the WM_KILLFOCUS is generated by the FocusOut handler which is still executing, and we lock up. I suspect this is related to bug 11595 "Notepad++ freezes if native application changes a file it has open (dogfood)". My guess is in that case, a FocusIn event triggers something like a WM_ACTIVATE, in which notepad++ notices a file is changed and displays a messagebox asking if you want to reload. Since wine is still processing the FocusIn event, the modal message loop's call to MsgWaitForMultipleObjectsEx will never process any useful events because it's a nested event. Our application's built-in text editor has this same problem. I don't understand the event handling code well enough to propose a solution. As a test, I allowed nested event processing and it solved the problem without introducing any obvious errors, but I'm sure that check was in there for a reason. It's probably better to keep the application code from being executed from inside the event handler, if that's possible. Eric

Hi, I would like to add a 'sub'-message to a commit like this one http://source.winehq.org/git/wine.git/commitdiff/dbd878639424071e1d4c6cfc9b… I know that I can specify this text at the beginning of a patch I want to send to wine-patches (befor the '---'). But here, I'm interested in how to do that on the git server side. git commit -a or git commit -m let me specify a 'global' commit message. I googled some key words and RTFMs but didn't find anything relevant. Any hints on how to do that ? I can ask AJ directly but 1) it may be considered as rude and selfish 2) some people may be interested by the answer Thanks in advance

TaskDialog implementation

Hello everyone, I'd like to port my re-implementation of task dialogs (http://www.korosoft.net/projects/tdemu/) to WINE, actually I have posted a small patch yesterday (merely rearranges some source around, preparatory work) which sadly did not seem to get accepted. I'm going to take my code and clean it to WINE's source code standards, however I do not see how I could split it in many patches as everything is dependant on everything else. As this is quite a big amount of work, I would like to have some guidance (what must I do to be sure it is accepted) so that I do not end up doing all that for nothing - starting by knowing why my patch from yesterday was not accepted (what did I do wrong). Thanks for your time and help.

Hi, please try and convince me that a deadlock cannot happen. http://source.winehq.org/source//dlls/winealsa.drv/mmdevdrv.c AudioClient_Start calls CreateTimerQueueTimer which creates a new thread periodically invoking the timer callback. The callback invokes alsa_push_buffer_data() which ceases the audio client object lock (This->lock). AudioClient_Stop performs EnterCriticalSection(&This->lock); then DeleteTimerQueueTimer(g_timer_q, This->timer, INVALID_HANDLE_VALUE); Now imagine Stop is invoked, EnterCriticalSection executed then the thread is preempted. Suppose the timer callback kicks in: alsa_push_buffer_data will block on This->lock. When the thread is resumed, DeleteTimerQueue will hang forever waiting for all timer callbacks to come to an end. My opinion is that critical sections are great to prevent concurrent execution while things are running, but they are hell to tear down properly. IMHO, LeaveCriticalSection + Re-EnterCriticalSection around DeleteTimerQueue is not a solution. I consider using Leave+EnterCS around anything that can wait/block an anti-pattern (there are a few places like that in Wine). I believe a "restart op" is needed in general (like a "restart transaction if it failed" in databases) as anything could have happened while waiting. Regards, Jörg Höhle

Note that the important thing is not that you have sent a key event for the wrong key, it's that you haven't properly transitioned to a state which matches event->state. Hi, This is intended mostly for the other d3d developers, but since we have quite a number of them now so individual CCs are a lot of work :-) I attached the patches I currently have in my tree to give an update on what I've been working on recently. The main aim of those patches is to reduce draw overhead a bit, thus improving game performance. The patches need some cleanup, but for that I first need a patch Matteo is working on. Feedback is welcome. I'm also interested in test results, e.g. if the changes break a game, or the performance impact. If those patches cause a 5% performance increase I am happy. Patches 1-3: Mostly unrelated. I haven't sent them yet because patch 3 breaks Unigine Heaven, and patches 1 and 2 make little sense without 3. Patch 4: This removes a hack for a driver bug workaround. I have to do more testing on my old machines to find out if the bug is really fixed in newer nvidia drivers. Patches 5, 6: They keep track of changes to the framebuffer setup so we don't have to run through the code that figures out which FBO to bind every draw. Patch 5 gets rid of the ordering assumption. Patch 6 applies the FBO only when needed. They aren't ready yet. In patch 6 the FBO may have to be reapplied when the pixelshader changes. To implement that I need some draw buffer tracking infrastructure Matteo is working on. Also clears can be integrated. fbo- clear.diff is a half-baked attempt to do this. I dropped it when I realized I was duplicating Matteos work. After that I have to double-check that I took care of all situations where the FBO may have to be updated. Furthermore, Matteo says that not calling context_apply_draw_buffers every time framebuffer() is run is a noticeable performance improvement too. Matteo, did you test this with just patch 0005, or both 0005 and 0006? Patch 0007: Sampler map optimization, it has a lengthy description in the patch file Patch 0008: A tiny fix, it results in a pretty small improvement on OSX. On Linux+Nvidia it is not noticeable. Patch 0009: At first I tried to skip the render target dirtification entirely via a flag in the d3ddevice, but it was pretty tricky and ugly. Just making it cheaper gets us ~2/3rd of the way too. (Draw overhead tester performance without this: 259 fps. Complete disabling of the dirtification calls via a hack: 275. With this patch: 269) 0010: An unrelated cleanup Patches 11, 12: Preparation for including clears in the fbo dirtification patches. See fbo-clear.diff. More work on performance is obviously required, for example *) Separate vertex declaration, vertex shader and pixel shader states *) Speed up sampler preloading. This will be easier once we have a tree-like state structure. *) Write more tests for other common operations, like clears, blits, shader changes, texture changes, vertex buffer changes, dynamic resource loading *) Test our shader's GPU-side execution performance *) See if we can do something about locking *) Isolate bottlenecks in the GPU drivers and get them fixed.

I agree @todo_space@ should go; it's never used, so it's dead code now. Tempting to say that removing it should be a separate patch, rather than combining that with adding a new feature. Since all the @keywords@ are poorly documented, I'm glad to see an unused one go. Your generic @todo_wine@ keyword seems useful. The current code is a bit ugly. If you're going to add a nice is_todo_wine_line() helper, it might make sense to do a cleanup patch that cleans up the @keyword@ recognition in general first. (Why the verbose array declaration instead of a "constant"? etc.) I see you're making every line of the .exp file count as a test. That seems ok. There's a fair bit of code duplication; I wonder if you could avoid that by refactoring things a bit. To avoid adding dead code, it might be nice to see a test that actually uses your new keyword. - Dan

Hi, As I was writing my task dialog test I ran into a few problems trying to test on Windows... First, I tried building it using make crosstest but I keep getting this: $ gmake crosstest crosstest is not supported (mingw not installed?) gmake: *** [crosstest] Error 1 I am on FreeBSD 8.2-RELEASE (i386), I have the following mingw ports installed (using pkg_add) mingw32-bin-msvcrt-r3.18.a3.14 mingw32-binutils-2.21,1 mingw32-directx-20020518 mingw32-gcc-4.5.0_1,1 mingw32-pdcurses-3.4 mingw32-pthreads-2.8.0 I deleted config.status (there was no config.cache) and re-ran ./configure, it fails to detect mingw, so I gave up on that. I then tried building them on Windows directly instead (using Visual Studio 2008 with Windows SDK v7.0) as describred there: http://www.winehq.org/docs/winedev-guide/testing-windows However, trying to compile comctl32_tests using the WINE headers would complain about EXCEPTION_EXECUTE_HANDLER being undefined. On the other hand, compiling with the MSVC headers would complain about TVIS_FOCUSED not being present. According to this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/166471 it has been deprecated and removed from MS headers a long time ago. Eventually I would like to just be able to make crosstest so that I can stay in one dev environments and not two, so if anybody could help me about why isn't mingw32 detected, I would like it. You tested a declaration with larger fields, but not with the vertex size being smaller or greater. (E.g. Try removing the last field, or appending a field.) I did some testing and couldn't get GetDeclaration or GetNumBytesPerVertex to fail on windows. DrawSubset did seem to fail after UpdateSemantics is called with a declaration that causes CreateVertexDeclaration to fail. This suggests that the native implementation probably just stores the D3DVERTEXELEMENT9 array and calls CreateVertexDeclaration on DrawSubset. You can probably cache the created vertex declaration and release it on UpdateSemantics for performance.

Simple Windows Diaglogue App

Hi, I'm trying to compile a simple windows dialogue app over to run on *nix with winelib. I'm looking at it as proof of concept for porting a larger application over. I've been getting errors from gcc to do with vc++ casting, where it loses precision. LinuxPort.cpp: In function 'int WinMain(HINSTANCE__*, HINSTANCE__*, CHAR*, int)': LinuxPort.cpp:34: error: cast from 'CHAR*' to 'WORD' loses precision LinuxPort.cpp:39: error: cast from 'CHAR*' to 'WORD' loses precision winegcc: i486-linux-gnu-g++ failed Ive tried to use static_cast<> and also c-style casting using () but can't seem to get it working.
