Accounts in bugzilla and e-mail addresses used to submit patches

Can please everyone make sure that their e-mail in bugzilla matches the e-mail they use to submit patches? Or at least make it easily guessable. Or can we have all developers create page on Wiki and state their e-mails they use on bugazilla? The reason I'm asking is the standard procedure for a regression testing is to add author of the patch to CC. However sometimes it's impossible to do. How do I create a backtrace?

I've been asked by a Wine developer to provide a backtrace along with a "+relay,+seh" log for a bug that I have filed. I've read through the developer documentation but I can't figure out how to do this. I sent an email to the developer with a request for instructions but have not received a reply. Could someone here instruct me on how to do this? I'm a non-programmer so please take that into consideration with regards to your instructions. Thanks. Matt

Hi, Looking at the history of that test (http://test.winehq.org/data/tests/winmm:wave.html) I see a lot of timeout errors on the Wine builds, even after this fix went in. The fix itself has caused a regression of playback in many applications and games that play audio (http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15559). I want to submit the following patch to revert the part of the patch that caused the regression and fix some of the tracing. I have been using this patch on Cepstral SwiftTalker without issue and have tested it also with the game Azguard Defense. It won't work in MIDL and it won't work in widl when it is fixed to put the includes for imported files at the start of the generated header file, rather than in between the statements generated from neighbouring IDL statements. Disable regression tests option now available in git!

For those of you that don't monitor wine-commit, Alexandre committed a patch today to disable building the regression tests: http://source.winehq.org/git/wine.git/?a=commitdiff;h=35078f4b57523d4afe00d… So the manual PITA patching is no longer necessary. Hi, I was still using the rpm's that Hans provided in the past. Some searching shows: https://fcp.surfsite.org/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=61801&forum=11 I've installed these rpm's but the executables use a different naming convention: i686-pc-mingw32* instead of what we check for: i686-mingw32*. spec file syntax for VARIANT parameter

In order to implement OleLoadPictureFile and OleLoadPictureFileEx, it will be necessary to change their entries in oleaut32.spec from stub to stdcall. The stdcall syntax wants a list of parameter types, which puts these functions in an unususal situation: they take a VARIANT (which is a struct, in case anyone is not familiar) by value as their first parameter. There does not seem to be any type defined in the spec file that fits this situation. I have been using ptr in my last couple of patches which add stub implementations for these functions, but when I tried to build this on cygwin I got errors like: undefined reference to `_OleLoadPictureFileEx@20' undefined reference to `_OleLoadPictureFile@8' Looking at the functions that are present in the .o file, I see they are really _OleLoadPictureFileEx@32 and _OleLoadPictureFile@20. Changing the spec file to list each VARIANT as 4 longs fixes these errors. My question is, should my next version of the patch list the VARIANT as 4 longs, or is there some better way to specify this that I'm not aware of? If not, is there a comment syntax for the spec file where I can explain why there are 4 long params where there should be one VARIANT? Thanks Jeremy

NT driver address space

I think it makes more sense to ask the pipeline if it can handle a particular type for a particular usage. You can handle FLOAT16 support in the same way then. Also note that EXT_vertex_array_bgra adds support for D3DCOLOR, but only for diffuse, specular and generic attributes. That should be enough for anything we come across, but with a "can_convert_d3dcolor" flag like that you can't handle that extension properly.

I'm seeing the following valgrind warning in three out of eight runs under heavy load: InvalidRead IMM_FreeThreadData:233 DllMain:382 __wine_spec_dll_entry:40 MODULE_InitDLL:911 LdrShutdownThread:2174 call_thread_func:403 start_thread:444 It kind of feels like a race between thread shutdown and process shutdown. Wonder why patchwatcher was down for 12 hours? It seems to have been a kernel problem. This is on an Ubuntu 8.10 32 bit Core 2 Duo system on a P5K Pro motherboard, with a PCI-E NVidia card. I have the proprietary Nvidia drivers installed, so I can't expect support from anybody, but I did want to at least kvetch in public somewhere. The build slave was unresponsive. This is the first problem on this machine since I set it up several weeks ago. I guess I'll just reboot it and hope...

d3dx9: Add ID3DXSprite tests (review please)

This is my first test, so I think it's better to ask for feedback on wine-devel, first. There are some points, where I wasn't sure what to do: line 26: Is using inline okay here? IIRC that's C++ only, but other tests do it the same way... line 82: Is it legal to demand A8R8G8B8 support here? Otherwise, how would I do this without making the code overcomplicated? For what other formats should I check then? line 120-123: I hope it's okay to use hardcoded matrix values here, as the point of that test is only to make sure that the same matrix gets returned... line 215-253: 1) Is it okay to initialize D3D that way? 2) Can I simplify the initialization even further? Also, I'd like to know wether the code in general is clean enough. Any other feedback is welcome, too. I recently had a chat with Dan Kegel about the way to contribute and start hacking on a DIB engine. I grabbed Huw Davies and Jesse Allen's repositories and started looking at them. As it'll be an hard (and long) work, I'd like to know some opinions on how to proceed and propose an idea on how to have it introduced in mainstream without breaking stuff. The idea is, for now, JUST an idea and I still don't know if it'll be possible, but I guess yes. So, I was thinking on : 1) Try to join best stuffs of both repos of Huw and Jesse. 2) Add the environment variable DIBENGINE which could have 3 different values (or be missing) : missing DIBENGINE env var or DIBENGINE=NONE New dib engine will not be used, back to X11DRV DIBENGINE=FORWARD Unimplemented stuffs forwarded to X11, the rest using new dib engine code DIBENGINE=FULL use just dib engine code and shows FIXMEs for unimplemented stuffs The first would allow to insert dib engine in main stream without breaking anything, the last would allow to see what's more important to implement. The middle one (FORWARD) would allow to check if something breaks during the transition, and use the developed parts. 3) Stop and wait till it's put on mainstream, so more people could contribute. The doubt is if it'll be possible the mixed approach, forwarding unimplemented stuffs to X11, but I think so. Is it an acceptable way to proceed ? Ciao Max

In principle I think updating the icons is a great idea, but right now I gotta say that icons in Wine are a real disaster. Out of those icons My Documents looks the least broken - with it's wannabe 98/ME/2000 styling. Desktop, "/", My Computer and Trash look like they've been taken from large icons which have shrunk - badly, and with a broken alpha channel. And the new golden Folder icons look completely out of place - they bear no resemblance to anything else, they've been scaled down poorly, they don't look like Windows icons, and they don't fit in with the Gnome desktop (and I can't imagine they'd look good in KDE or on Mac either). I'd really like for Wine to start using icons from the Tango project, or similar. The purpose of Tango was to create a set of icons that are clear to see, and look good on Windows, Gnome, KDE, and MacOS. Surely that's exactly what we want? Governance of Wine with respect to the Software Freedom Conservancy

Hi folks, As you may recall, several years ago, we decided to work with the Software Freedom Conservancy to ask them to manage aspects of Wine that merited the shield of a formal organization. They have been great, and a great improvement over our former process. I thought I'd send an email out for the record, expressing what they do for us, and how that is governed. First, there are essentially 2 major assets they manage for us. They manage all funds donated to Wine - the donate button goes into a bank account they manage. They also hold trademarks to the Wine logo that they filed on our behalf. For decisions on how to spend funds, we've adopted a loose set of guidelines. That is, Dan Kegel, Alexandre, and myself are in contact with them. The goal is that all 3 of us agree on every decision, but 2 of the 3 of us must concur with any decision before it is effective. We three can appoint anyone else we choose to replace or augment the decision group. All decisions are CC'd to the WWN author (currently Zach Goldberg) for monitoring. The SFC will recognize a 'revolt' by the Wine project. That is, Dan, Alexandre and I can be overthrown, once you figure out our evil plans, if the SFC is persuaded that the majority of Wine contributors agree on that point. Patch count in the Wine tree will be the primary mechanism to recognize a contributor. Finally, all spending by the SFC on Wine's behalf for the last few years has been related to Wineconf. That has either been to pay for conference expenses directly (as in Reading, 2 years ago), or to help defray travel costs for Wine contributors to come to Wineconf (as happened this year). On Linux and FreeBSD, I'd suggest finding a way to detect the current icon theme (perhaps determine which desktop environment is running, then read the config file for that desktop?) and use the freedesktop.org icon names and the XDG_DATA_DIRS variable to locate the icons. This wouldn't work on KDE3 (which doesn't use the freedesktop spec). In that case I would say fall back to the hicolor icons. On Mac, you should use the native mac icons, but that might not work to do Obj-C issues (I know nothing about mac programming, so maybe there's a way to get native icons without Obj-C?). This way, when theming is implemented, the icons and the theme will both match the user's desktop environment. It's more complicated than just implementing Tango, but visually it makes more sense. Howdy, The OS list in bugzilla is a bit excessive. There are 16 OS's that I think we should remove, as no one is using them (HP-UX has one bug filed against it, but for all intents and purposes, it's not being used). Many of these aren't x86, so only could be used for Winelib anyway. Mac System 7 Mac System 7.5 Mac System 7.6.1 Mac System 8.0 Mac System 8.5 Mac System 8.6 Mac System 9.x BSDI AIX BeOS HP-UX IRIX Neutrino OpenVMS OS/2 OSF/1 While we're at it, I'd like to add PC-BSD and OpenSolaris. Lastly, how about a compiler keyword, for bugs related to compiler warnings/errors/etc.? -- -Austin

Some oddity with kernel32/pipe tests on NT4 and W2K

Hi I'm looking into the timeout issue on NT4. The timeout seems to be coming from: 796 size = 32678; ... 799 ok(CreatePipe(&piperead, &pipewrite, &pipe_attr, size) != 0, "CreatePipe failed\n"); 800 ok(WriteFile(pipewrite, buffer, size, &written, NULL), "Write to anonymous pipe failed\n"); When I change it to write a smaller number of bytes: 800 ok(WriteFile(pipewrite, buffer, (size - 24), &written, NULL), "Write to anonymous pipe failed\n"); we don't have a timeout. Changing the 'size - 24' to a bigger number like 'size - 23' gives a timeout again. Also changing size to 16384 still needs that 'size - 24' in the WriteFile(). In fact every size I use I need a 'size - 24'; I can also make this timeout go away by specifying at least 'size + 24' in the CreatePipe() call. MSDN states that the passed size for CreatePipe us used as an suggestion. I guess NT4 and W2K don't guess/calculate that well? Any ideas? -- Cheers, Paul.

Users posting to wine-bugs

Hi You may remember me as the person that does the mailing list moderation. Every day there are always several users posting directly to wine-bugs, as they are hitting reply to emails generated by Bugzilla instead of posting in Bugzilla itself. I added a message in the text that Bugzilla generates to make it clearer to not reply to the email a few months ago, which at the time seemed to improve things but as of late the number of emails has been going up again. Is anybody opposed to me setting up an auto-responder so that any mail going to wine-bugs(a)winehq.org gets auto responded to with a message to post in Bugzilla instead? I ask this in wine-devel as I'm not sure who is the actual administrator of the lists are. Thanks Luke Bratch

Only ~100 valgrind errors left?

I'm getting back to valgrinding again. In preparation for adding valgrind runs to patchwatcher, I'm running the test suite through valgrind zillions of times, looking at how repeatable the results are. At the moment it looks like there is an annoyingly long tail of less likely failures, which is going to be a pain. On the bright side, it is looking like there aren't that many frequent valgrind errors left. See http://kegel.com/wine/valgrind/2008-11-13.txt for a manually deduplicated list. It only shows about 100 problems. Here's the breakdown by error type: 1 InvalidJump 3 InvalidWrite 7 Leak_DefinitelyLost 7 UninitValue 11 SyscallParam 25 InvalidRead 52 UninitCondition A word of warning: don't go fixing the problems behind these warnings unless you really know what you're doing. Superficial fixes are worse than no fix. That said, if anyone has a really good grasp of any of these problems, please go ahead and fix, or let me know which of these should be suppressed. For no particularly good reason, I've omiitted filenames, the list only includes function names and line numbers. That should have the unintended benefit of discouraging people unfamiliar with the code from jumping in and fixing things... Thanks, Dan

Am I in the good way, or it is completely a bad idea? With GetViewport, I retrieve the viewport matrix V, and with GetTransform, I retrieve projection P and world W matrices ofn the device. I multiply the three matrices in a matrice M: M=VPW If M is singular, function returns with a failing message Otherwise, with the matrix M I retrieve the planes of the frustum view (that's a little bit of math, but quite easy) Then for each sphere, Let Visibility=0 for each plane of the frustum view Let I be the intersection of the orthogonal projection of the center sphere on the plane. Make Wine and the tests dpi aware

Wine use some fixed values for calculating gui elements, and hopefully the current values are verified with tests. The tests works in Windows, but only with the default settings: 96 dpi ("Small Fonts" / "Kleine Schriften") and the default theme. It would be a good idea to run the tests also for different settings. A first step should be using 120 dpi (Large Fonts) on Windows, and fix the tests and our Implementation. (comctrl32 has lot's of issues). For Patchwatcher, it should be possible to require selectable tests to run on more than one Machine with different settings. That way patchwatcher can detect 96dpi vs. 120dpi problems. Other possible testing improvement include color-depth and screen size issues. -- By by ... Detlef

Do I have to adjust a setting or install gecko maybe? Older versions of iTunes I have tried have the same problem. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I recently upgraded to intrepid, which has gcc 4.3.2. It gave a few new warnings, and I've got patches ready for all but this one. Wine and relocation on not aligned section

Hi list, while diving into wine sources i've noticed that wine does not apply relocation to section not aligned to page boundary. Is there any reason for this behaviour? If it is wrong i've put up a little patch that solves the issue. winehq packages for Debian

Hi guys, I'm a regular volunteer in the #winehq IRC channel (man_in_shack). Some of you may know me :) I also maintain a few applications on AppDB and have had a couple of bugs found and fixed via bugzilla posts. I've been building Wine packages for my Debian systems for a while and now I've written myself some helper scripts to make the task trivial :) I build both amd64 and i386 packages. I'd like to request that I take over Scott Ritchie's position as maintainer for the winehq Debian packages as he seems to have all but abandoned Debian package building. I have the following caveats: 1) I don't have a suitable place to upload the packages (in terms of bandwidth restrictions) 2) At the moment, I'm not sure if the packages are suitable for an apt repository, as I don't have proper Changelogs or source packages. I'm not entirely sure what I'd need to do for this, so help would be appreciated 3) I'm fully set up to produce etch packages (Scott's packages aren't etch-compatible any more) as well as packages for lenny and sid 4) I'm not asking to take over Ubuntu package building (Scott seems to be good at this, and I don't have nor want an Ubuntu system) 5) I can be *very* quick to produce packages, as in the day after release (or even building packages from non-release revisions in git if required) Involvement in wine is fun! Another shot at running tests in parallel

On modern CPUs, with a 30 second timeout per test, the wine conformance test suite runs in about 4-5 minutes. That's wonderfully fast, completely sufficient for all purposes... ... except one: running tests under valgrind, which imposes a roughly 10x penalty. 40-50 minutes to run the tests is a bit too long to expect developers to wait for feedback. So I had another try at getting conformance tests to run in parallel, this time without any code modifications. I use WINETEST_WRAPPER="$HOME/alarm 30", where alarm is the output of compiling http://winezeug.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/patchwatcher/alarm.c That file has a hardcoded whitelist of tests that are know to not call CreateWindow (directly or indirectly) or do anything else that might not work well in parallel. alarm takes an exclusive lock when running any test not on that list. Even with this fairly restrictive whitelist, the tests were fairly parallelizable (see below). Because running tests in parallel is tricky, and makes our already somewhat shaky test suite less stable, I will run the tests the normal way first, and only if they pass without regressions will I then do a second run under Valgrind. And I'll ignore any test failures that happen under valgrind; all I care about in those runs are the valgrind warnings. Here are some benchmarks on a quad processor: -j time in seconds 1 255 2 155 3 125 4 105 20 79 With -j4, it looks like valgrind could run the tests in about ten minutes, which would be quick enough. It would be nice if our test suite really ran in parallel some day, but the approximation I have now is probably good enough. - Dan p.s. Out of curiosity, I checked how many tests interfere with themselves if multiple copies are run. To do this, I ran with WINETEST_WRAPPER="$HOME/foowrap.sh" where foowrap.sh was #!/bin/sh # Run same test three times in parallel $@ & sleep 1 $@ & $@ As you can imagine, that broke a lot of tests, many more than just running in parallel.

FWIW: with wine from git from a couple days ago, here are wine build times on various Intel CPUs in seconds on Ubuntu 8.10's gcc-4.3.2 (or 8.04): sec cpu wine notes 676 e7200 June http://kegel.com/new-computer-2008.html ubuntu 8.04 615 e7300 Nov 585 e7400 Nov (estimated, supposedly 5% faster than e7300) 540 e8400 Nov 360 q9400 Nov In all cases, this was with the default optimization level, -O2. Compiling with -O0 was roughly twice as fast (e.g. 196 seconds to build on the q9400). The dual core e7300 and e8400 were tested with -j3; the quad core q9400 with -j5. The current crop of CPUs is that they run cooler than older ones. Replacing the old Athlon 64's in the patchwatcher cluster with new CPUs and 80+ power supplies makes a big difference in the room's temperature! The quad CPUs are coming down in price. noob req: ddraw/vertexbuffer.c and HW vertex buffers

Hi, I've been playing Gothic2 and getting lots of messages regarding d3d7:IDirect3DVertexBufferImpl_Optimize, printed by ddraw/vertexbuffer.c. Reading the comments for that function seems to indicate that vertex buffers are currently emulated in software, and will be handled in hardware as soon as wined3d is capable of that - however, reading wined3d/vertexbuffer.c, especially CreateVBO, implies that hardware/GL vertex buffers are already supported. Git logs also show that ddraw/vertexbuffer.c has not been changed in a few months. Did I completely mis-interpret the comments, or has this file simply been forgotten? integration of winscard patches: ideas for implementing test cases?

Hi together! I am currently wondering which test cases make sense after an integration of winscard patches. So far most API calls are directly related to pcsc-lite behaviour and therefore we need a result from pcsc-lite which is comparable with what Win/winscard.dll would return to us. But this is almost always depending on the smartcard reader setup at the local machine. As a result I see a problem to automate such tests without having underlying assumptions concerning the attached smartcard readers and maybe inserted (or not) smartcards (i.e. specific hardware is necessary). Any ideas? Does anyone know whether someone has written a virtual card reader which can be accessed using pcsc-lite (i.e. an IFD handler exists which simulates reader behaviour)? Maybe together with the option to insert a virtual card? If not then I am going to subscribe to the pcsc-lite maling list and ask this question there, too. Any other ideas how to automate winscard tests to be able to add such tests to the regression test suite? Regards Heiko

Issues with VMware Workstation 6.5.0, winetest and directx acceleration enabled

Hi, FYI. I had to disable "Accelerate 3D graphics (DirectX 9.0c)" in the VM settings on several of my Vmware boxes. Winetest crashed my W2K and Vista box (ddraw:d3d) and made my Win98 box unresponsive (user32:sysparams when changing to 8bit display). If I can find some spare time I will report this to VMware. I do however run VMware Workstation on Fedora 8 which is not officially supported. -- Cheers, Paul.

Hi, At the moment, if you have several themes installed on your system (e.g. by installing StyleXP) winecfg will list those themes in a random (read not sorted) order. If I just add the CBS_SORT flag, the wrong theme is chosen because the order in the combo boxes are assumed to be the same order in a DSA (dynamic array) containing the theme, size or colour data. My idea is to store the additional data in the combo box in the item's item data. This will mean a major rewrite of this area to remove the use of the DSAs, so I am wondering what the best way to approach this is. I am currently thinking something along the lines of: 1. Replace the DSA for the theme colour list, storing the data in the item data of the colour list combo box; 2. Replace the DSA for the theme size list, storing the data in the item data of the size list combo box; 3. Replace the DSA for the theme list, storing the data in the item data of the theme list combo box; 4. Make the theme list and theme colour lists sorted. Does this approach seem reasonable? - Reece

Patchwatcher is now working well enough to depend on, I think, but doesn't send email yet. You should see your patch appear at http://kegel.com/wine/patchwatcher/results under a minute after you post, and if your patch is simple, test results should show up about ten minutes later. (Long patch series take longer, since patchwatcher runs the test suite after each patch in the series.) Today's changes (from http://code.google.com/p/winezeug/source/list ): - Update the dashboard immediately upon receiving patches. - Added qmgr timeout and winhttp:notification.c to blacklist. Full blacklist at http://winezeug.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/patchwatcher/blacklist.txt Please fix your tests so I don't have to blacklist them. (The d3d tests should start passing once I move to the latest nvidia drivers, so don't worry about them.)

What happened to __TRY?

Hi all, When I upgraded wine-develfrom 1.0 to 1.1.7, my winelib app that uses __TRY no longer links. It complains that RtlUnwind cannot be found. I can see that RtlUnwind was added to wine/exception.h, but I am not sure how to fix it. I tried adding -lntdll and -lwine to the link command line but it didn't help. Any suggestions? If it's just to make the test pass, then we need to know why the test is failing. Is it only needed for wine? Could be a wine problem. Is it only needed for specific versions of Windows or specific hardware or drivers? Is it only needed for Windows running on a virtual machine? Then it could be a a virtual machine hardware emulation problem. I think all Windows hardware test failures that only happen on virtual machines should be considered suspect. It would be nice to detect if Windows is running on real hardware or a virtual machine because of this type of problem.

In the tests patch, I did not check if d3dxmatrixstackcreate fails. If it fails, tests should be skipped. At the end of the test, I did not call the _Release function. It should be done too. Wine support for win64

It has taken some tinkering to make it build, but after that i'm not able to run anything and ti seems that wineboot cannot start. Any suggestion? Wine theming (follow up)

Hi, The way to go for Wine theming is to use Windows XP themes. Unfortunately the file format itself is not documented. Based on Wine its uxtheme code (BTW our uxtheme is quite complete) and an analysis of some 'free' XP themes like 'ClearLook' I was able to write my own theme template. First of all for I want to warn all people who want to write Wine themes. A Windows theme consists of colors, font sizes, bitmaps and dimensions of controls. Windows theme editors use XP themes as a template for creating new themes, so even if you find a 'free' theme it is in the end derived from a Microsoft theme and most of the time Luna. Myself I analyzed the clearlooks and some other free ones just to understand Wine's uxtheme code. If you want to write themes use the uxtheme code as your reference. For instance dlls/uxtheme/stylemap.c shows which properties are allowed on each control. If a property on lets say a button is called 'CONTENTMARGINS' themes useally type 'ContentMargins', Anyway now to the theme file I created. A theme file is a resource file which contains various sections. They contain the names of the builtin color schemes, font sizes and of course the actual theme data. The theme data itself is stored in ini files. Most themes offer differ font sizes and colors and for each combination there is a ini file. The theme file I made only consists of a 'SysMetrics' section which contains the 'classic' color names which can also be adjusted from the Control Panel\\Colors registry location. The difference is that in XP Microsoft cleaned up the names, so some of the names have changed. The theme is compiled using mingw because right now winecfg seems to need a real 'MZ' header. A lot of work is needed especially in comctl32 and also in uxtheme its drawing code to optimize the drawing performance and to properly render themes. For this purpose you should use some free native XP themes and try them to render properly in Wine. The uxtheme drawing code needs to handle margins, locations and positions properly. Right now in case of a button comctl32 is making assumptions about text locations and I don't think that belongs there. Hopefully some people will step up to create Wine themes and improve utheme and our theme drawing. Myself I envision a 'winetheme.msstyles' which contains some GTK and QT color themes. The new patchwatcher is sort of up; I'm focusing on things like getting the load balancing and blacklist right before I even think about email output. (And if anybody wonders why the heck I'm looking at this at 4AM, it's because my 5 year old climbed into our bed upside-down a few minutes ago and kicked me out in his sleep. General script for installing Wine build dependencies

I have in the past written one script per version of Ubuntu to install Wine's build dependencies. Many versions on, that's getting old, and I figure it'd be better to have a single script that handles all common versions on Linux. I've taken a first stab at that, combining my scripts for gutsy and hardy, and adding ibex. The result is at http://winezeug.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/install-wine-deps.sh If anyone wants to add support to that script for another OS, please do, and send me the patch. I'd like to see this in the wine tree sometime. It's kind of silly we have to direct people to a big, confusing wiki page (or set of them) to explain how to install the needed packages; let's just have a unified script and be done with it.

rfc: refactoring msxml3 to get rid of aggregation

Hello developers, the msxml3 code currently uses aggregation to implement IXMLDOMNode on all of the different DOM tree elements. As the interfaces for these elements are all derived from IXMLDOMNode, a lot of forwarding thunks have to be implemented to get the calls into the inner object. The attached patch series modifies the source code to derive the objects instead, which seems like the more natural approach to get derived interfaces implemented. The attached patches still have to be cleaned up: They contain lines ending with whitespace, incosistent spacing around function call parenthesis, incosistent style of using a cast helper function or direct casting and other small nits. A more important problem with these patches that make me write this mail is that they generate lots of compiler warnings like | domdoc.c:1556: warning: initialization from incompatible pointer type which is of no surprise, as the vtable for domdoc expects a function taking an IXMLDOMDocument as "this" pointer while I provide a function taking an interface pointer to an IXMLDOMNode as "this" pointer. Both of these pointers point to the same address (as usual for derived objects), so the conversion is safe, but the simple-minded C compiler can't know that. The question that arises is how to handle these warnings. a) ignore them (most probably not an option) b) add lots of casts (only way to make the idea of these patches fly) c) write lots of little forwarding functions that convert the this pointer. d) ditch the idea of using derivation instead of aggregation Any oppions on that? I (obviously) think that b is the right solution, but as a quick grep over the Wine source code revealed, this solution seems to be used nowhere. Is that because this is the first place where deriving makes sense or is that because I'm completely off-track? DIrectSound on top of openAL ?

I was wondering why directsound was not implemented using openal. As direct3d is implemented on top of opengl. I see three major advantages : openAL is cross-platform, whereas alsa is linux-specific. openAL is (sometimes) hardware-accelerated. Wine would bring directsound hardware acceleration to windows vista :) See http://connect.creativelabs.com/openal/OpenAL%20Wiki/OpenAL%C2%AE%20and%20W… for manufacturers which bring hardware accelerated openal drivers... Plus, wine would benefit of the system's openal configuration. No need to chosse between OSS and ALSA, the user would have done it through his openAL configuration.

Patchwatcher is almost recovered from its move to the new machine. I expect to turn email notifications back on tomorrow. The old machine could only just barely keep up with the patch flow. Hi, I have my vertex pipeline replacement almost ready to send. Because the fragment pipeline replacement caused a bunch of regressions, I want to give this patch a bit of testing before committing it. I expect slightly more regressions there because the vertex processing stuff is still badly tested, especially lighting. Can you give the patches a try and see if your game still works? For now the most important part is that the game works without any performance loss or rendering bugs. This patchset is supposed to address the following issues: 1) Improve performance in applications that are hit hard by drawStridedSlow. I don't know if there are many left, because the vertex buffer fixups really helped here 2) Allow adding features that do not exist in the GL fixed function pipeline(or are not supported by drivers): Vertex blending, tweening, more efficient material tracking, per-vertex point size 3) Make the way towards OpenGL 3 forward compatibility mode So far (1) should already go some way with these patches. There are no new features added yet, and opengl 3 needs the same stuff implemented with GLSL and further work, but this is a necessary start. Once these patches are in, I'll turn to fine-tuning things. The rhw handling can be done better(maybe), and vertex buffer loading can be made much cheaper if the pipeline replacement is in use and opengl supports native 16 bit vertex attributes. This should get old card compatibility costs off our backs when we're running on a modern GPU without sacrificing backward compatibility.

I ran a regression test for bug 13583 and attempted to add the patch author to the CC field in Bugzilla as indicated in the regression test documentation. Unfortunately, I get the following error: CC: rob(a)codeweavers.com did not match anything How do I get the author of the patch onto the CC list? Matt

does anyone else's windows 98 machine not survive the user32 msg test?

After I run "user32_crosstest msg" on my windows 98 virtual machine in qemu, it no longer responds to any mouse input (the cursor moves and changes, but clicking has no effect). This seems to be caused by calling DefWindowProcA directly with WM_SYSCOMMAND messages SC_NEXTWINDOW and SC_PREVWINDOW. Does this happen to anyone else, especially on a windows 98 machine not running in qemu? Vincent Povirk

Hi, I just read the following in the WWN: "The overall 'Wine Experience' was discussed next. As a whole everybody agrees that it is ugly. Winecfg is arcane, there are tons of nonsense fixmes, very little 'newbie guidance' and overall a small chance of success on the first try. Devs do care about this but its just not as much fun to fix." Don't be so hard on yourselves! Remember when we had to write a text-based configuration file with no help other than documentation? What percentage of the computer-using public reads documentation? I can say something like, "Diablo II will not run fullscreen on my computer. You have to set it to use an emulated desktop before you launch it or it will crash. You can do that using the 'Configure Wine' program on the 'Wine' menu," to my non-Linux-using girlfriend and she can figure out how to run Diablo II without additional help, and without knowing anything ahead of time about emulated desktops. It's just a checkbox and it just works. You all are doing a great job! :) Cheers, Eric

patchwatcher status: ready for volunteers to get working on bsd/solaris/mac

Blacklisted wininet:http.c because it relies on winehq.org being up and serving php properly :-) Fixed enough problems with the new patchwatcher that it seems to be running tests properly. You can see the new patchwatcher's results at http://kegel.com/wine/patchwatcher/results2/ The results should agree with the original patchwatcher, http://kegel.com/wine/patchwatcher/results/ Now I just have to get the email and web reporting smoothed out, then I can consider turning the old one off and turning on the new one's email notifications. Then it should be pretty easy to add new slave build machines to speed up the build or add new slave types (e.g. windows, valgrind, macosx, bsd, solaris). Now is a good time for bsd / macosx / solaris enthusiasts to jump in and get patchwatcher running on their favorite OS or compiler. Patches gladly accepted. If alternate platforms or compilers are working well and are worth integrating into the main patchwatcher instance, I'll do it. The code's all in svn at http://code.google.com/p/winezeug/source/browse/#svn/trunk/patchwatcher as usual. The new patchwatcher is described in readme.txt. Have fun! - Dan
