When apps exit, they often ask the rebar for current band info so that the next time they run, they can tell the rebar how to layout the bands. When they ask about the size of a band, current code passes them lpBand->cx, which is a value passed by apps at band creation time, validated and stored by rebar, and then never gets updated. So apps alway get the old size value, while lpBand->ccx as the name suggests is the current rebar size. Tested with some apps, and no regression observed. Source Insight works better, so is Internet Explorer. I have actually made more changes to rebar.c. Wondering if some could review this patch and submit it. If I start two 16 bit programs in wcmd or in the original case use wintask to start a Delphi 1 based GUI the second program does not get a new thread detach. Dev-C++ dogfooding

So far, everything works, except when you try to install a package that already is installed (of any version, so this also breaks upgrades via the package manager) Package manager starts up, presents you with a disloag (like aother package install) but when it goes to copy files, it open a dialog box with the error "Cannot Open AVI" with buttons which are clipped off (the window is a bit too small, push the farthest to the left to makei t resize and such.) It should be noted that a manual upgrade can be done by untarring the DevPak (it's a .tar.bz2) and copying the files manually, if the directory names aren't mangled. For some odd reason some files won't compile, yet others do, i can't explain it. Must be a MingW bug.

Regression in gdi

Greetings, The patch mentioned below introduced a regression in gdi, so that the part of the slidefields in Windows Media Player 9 left of the slider were drawn as single-colour rectangles instead of a normal-looking part of the slidefield. It can be unapplied cleanly from current CVS. Keyboard fix - patch available

Hi all, Sorry for bothering you guys ..... but .... I saw a patch for bug #2400 (a very old bug) at http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2400 Looking at the comments at the bugzilla tracking, the patch worked flawlessly for lots of keyboard types (croatian, german and russian), including mine: a brazilian abnt2 keyboard. The patch looks fine and very clean. The problem mentioned with remote X-windows access seems not to occur besides someone mention it. Anyway, at least the problem is gone with local access and, *if confirmed*, remains with remote access only. Easy applications to write automated tests for?

I noticed a probable regression in an app (kid pix 3) tonight. Which got me thinking: what are the easiest set of application regression tests we could throw together that go further than just verifying the installer runs? I'm thinking not just of things that could be automated with cxtest, but also stuff that might not fit into that framework. In the case of Kid Pix 3, a test that simply started the app, waited ten seconds, and made sure an error dialog didn't pop up would have detected the problem. ('Course, only a few people would be able to run that, as Kid Pix 3 is not a free download.) cxtest should be able to handle that. A bit more complex would be to launch WinZip, have it compress one file, and make sure the compressed file was as expected. It shouldn't be too hard to make cxtest handle that. And then on the somewhat ambitious end, now that Sun's JVM basically installs and runs trivial programs, we could run through the Java regression test suite at http://sourceware.org/mauve/ Heck, I might give that a shot myself. There's probably no reason to try to shove that into cxtest, is there? Or would it fit? And beyond the looking glass, one could imagine running the OpenOffice 2.0 automated test suite. (That's unlikely to work well at the moment, given that OpenOffice 2.0's open dialog locks up reliably.) I think checking values explicitly is preferable to encoding them in the syntax, since it gives you a chance to provide meaningful errors. linux mmap bug ? not filling in allocation gaps

I've been debugging why an n64 emulator ( Project64 ) gets "Failed to allocate memory" errors under wine 9.9.10 on linux kernel 2.6. The program allocates a large chunk of size 0x20100000, which succeeds, and then another large 0x10100000 chunk, which fails. WINEDEBUG=+relay,+virtual eventually brought me to look at the linux /proc/<pid>/maps to see if the address space was really fully allocated. Here's what I noticed: Address start - end: 00400000-0554000 - Project64.exe address 00554000-20000000 ---p large mem allocation *** <gap> *** 55555000-573e0000 - loaded shared libraries 573e0000-774e0000 ---p mem alloc of 0x20100000 7bf00000-7c003000 - wine-pthread 7c003000-7c1ee000 - [heap] 7ffe0000-fffe0000 ---p large mem allocation ffff7000-fffff000 - [stack] Wrote a test mmap binary to fill a process address space, it created a similar gap between the executable load address and the loaded shared libraries, eventually failing mmap calls when it hit the stack address space. When I updated the test app to explicitly mmap in the gap area via specifying the aligned start address, the mmap call succeeded. I can't be the first person to notice this. Are there any TODO solutions for this ? One linux-centric solution would be to look for gaps like this in /proc/<pid>/maps in the libs/wine/mmap.c and take advantage of this. Or maybe another would be to keep a table of address spaces returned in wine_anon_mmap as a guide, then validate with try_mmap_fixed as to where a next-allocation should occur ( would this solution work outside linux ) ? I just made some tests, and native sets/clears VM_MENU whenever right or left ALT is pressed/depressed. So we should be doing the same thing. Btw exactly the same thing happens with CONTROL & SHIFT. P.S. Why thread-local variables? AFAIK OpenGL is single-threaded in its nature. I don't know if there are applications that draw opengl in multiple threads in different contents, and if current code would make any problems with these. Leon

I've been digging into why versions of uTorrent greater than 1.1.3 do not work under the latest wine and tracked it down to their use of WSAEventSelects to receive socket notifications. I created a small test application which mimics this behavior which works under WindowsXP but not wine. The problem is that they create MAXIMUM_WAIT_OBJECTS events and pass them to WaitForMultipleObjectsEx. That function bails out early due to dlls/kernel/sync.c:173: 176 if (count >= MAXIMUM_WAIT_OBJECTS) 177 { 178 SetLastError(ERROR_INVALID_PARAMETER); 179 return WAIT_FAILED; 180 } Windows supports up to and including that number, wine only supports up to that number. Since the rest of the code actually does support the full 64 wait objects, is there any reason this should not be changed to 176 if (count > MAXIMUM_WAIT_OBJECTS)

I'm getting picky, but there are a couple of things you still need to work on: - first, I don't think it's worthwhile to add another method to the CPU backend. Adding a boolean (as parameter) to print_context should do. - you also need to fix all the be_*.c files (for amd, ppc...) as well. Otherwise, they won't compile. Google for these combined with keywords related to Wine didn't show anything, which surprised me since they seem ideal to solve a number of problems. Attached is version 0.2 of this script, with a lot of additional functionality. You will need to be able to write to /tmp and make a file /tmp/grep to use the extended functionality (default functionality needs none of that, and is unmodified.) One solution would be to make two enter_gl functions -- one with the check and one without, and hardcode some database with the function list in the script that generates the files. Function counting script

As my small contribution, attached is a small shell script that, unmodified, finds out how many times certain functions are called in a given sample of files. The default functions are 'malloc', 'realloc', and 'free', and the sample files are all files ending in .c in the current directory. It even prints out the result in a neat manner on ANSI colourized terminals. The script is very flexible, and easy to modify. Current version is 256bytes long.

Quite a few apps use embedded JVM's. Case in point: SPSS, one of the apps requested by Munich. So I played around a bit with Sun's latest 1.5 JRE. It can run trivial apps, so I closed http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2953 (ok, maybe that was premature, since the bug was for Sun's 1.4 JRE). But it can't run applets; first, it runs into a nasty glx error, http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=4143 Once you patch your way past that, it complains about not finding a native method, see http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=4873 And it doesn't show up in Firefox's about:plugins by default, see http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=4860 Can anyone shed some light on these, especially bug 4143? msys on wine - partial success

Last year, I poked at using msys under wine: http://www.winehq.com/hypermail/wine-devel/2004/04/0149.html but didn't follow up on the hint that wineconsole would help. Finally got around to it. Sure enough, you can run msys's sh.exe in a wineconsole! It's ugly and can't seem to run configure scripts yet, but it does run simple shell scripts and interactive commands like cd, pwd, and ls. Sort of. Here's what I tried: Installing http://easynews.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/mingw/MSYS-1.0.10.exe created c:\msys\1.0. Looking in that directory, I saw a script MSYS.BAT that one uses to start a shell. Rather than figuring out how to invoke that batch file in Wine, I read it, saw that it invoked sh as "sh --login -i", and wrote a little shell script that did something similar: wineconsole ~/.wine/drive_c/msys/1.0/bin/sh.exe --login -i This had problems with the path -- it couldn't find msys's external commands. Running "echo $PATH" showed that it defaulted to including /mingw/bin, so I cheated and added a symlink: ln -s ~/.wine/drive_c/msys/1.0 ~/.wine/drive_c/mingw That worked; I can now use msys's external commands in the msys sh. I probably should have modified the PATH, but that was hard to script. The ugly part is, when you give any command, the first thing that happens is a pair of warnings: sh: fork: No such file or directory sh: child setpgid (-45 to -50): Invalid argument And if you try to run mauve's configure script. it stops after the second statement. It seems that anything involving subshells or eval confuses it greatly. Also, if you're not very careful with the first command you type, it gets into a bad state where it ignores half the keys you type, or something. Hi there, I work on ZSNES and I was trying to get it working under wine and I ran into a small bug when running under a 32 bit desktop. This fixed a bug in the DeviceGetCaps() function used to return the current bitdepth of the desktop. It is my understanding that X11 returns "24" as the bitdepth while running a 32 bit framebuffer. I have seen in the code where it does change the 24 to 32, but I have discovered a spot where this has been missed. The following is the changes I made, it simply returns 32 if the user has a 24 bit desktop. Good morning guys I did my system works with wine no problem, but when I try print using then, doesnt work... if I print from any other aplication, works. I talked with my developer and he told me that are using a delphi componet called RDPRINT, this in windows, to create better graphics. So, Are there any way to print in wine, using this RDPRINT ?? any dll, any configuration I am using latest wine configured with winetools, the printer is a lx300. Hi, "Eliminating" windowsx.h sounds like you consider this header file a bad thing. I don't think so - it provides a bunch of very usefull type safe macro definitions. (SelectFont, ListBox_SetSel, Button_SetCheck, ...) I understand you want to eliminate some useless warnings printed by newer GCC versions. Wouldn't it be better to correct the wrong warnings of GCC instead? Regards, Martin

Problem with virtual memory rlimits

Hi, I am having a problem with virtual ulimits/rlimits. If you limit the virtual memory size using "ulimit -v 1400000" for instance, wine will only crash. The problem is, that VIRTUAL_alloc_teb() tries to allocate a memory area within the acceptable userspace ... but it does so much mmap()s that it runs out of available mmap space before. I was only able to reproduce this on AMD64 machines up to now, which pass out memory starting from 0xf7fffffff somewhere. Any clue how to solve this? Ciao, Marcus

I've been trying to figure out why Munich doesn't like Wine for some time. Here's what I've learned: In 2004 six apps were briefly tested by ITOMIG under both plain Wine and Crossover Office 3.0.1 as part of initial studies for the Munich migration to Linux. Weehaa, my getwinegit.sh-script now reached a next major version-step! It's not perfect but it should do it's job very smoothly. Here's, what has changed: 0.3_Yea, new features and some fixes ;) - Mode 4: installs an already compiled source - fixed a bug when mode was 3 and the target-dir was _not_ found - Now uses PID-Files to ensure, that getwinegit.sh does not run twice - very small enhancements in logger - Logfile is now stored at /var/log/ as default - small stuff I don't remember... again... - Granatenstark, Hoschi! ;) (who of you german speakings know bill and ted?) This release is meant to be a stable-version. IF there are bugs, then post them to wine-users. Questions? PLEASE read the readme-file and if you really can't sort things out, post to wine-users. The right way to do this is to rewrite all this font matching code so that we loop through the families and faces once and score each one. At the end we pick the one with the lowest score. Hi there, is it possible to build real elf binaries with winelib? If i go through the tutorial on winehq.org i get only a appname.exe.so and i have to invoke wine to start the application. Is it possible to compile a binary wich can run stand alone? regards benjamin z.

What I'm seeing here with the whole debate with wine and winetools is that its a configuration management issue. The project is getting into the stage where testing needs to be accomodated and so does getting things working. I think whats currently available for managing configurations to wine is innadequate. Even winecfg provides an interface that is innadequate for making many changes in terms of dll overrides. Plus it doesn't provide a mechanism for rolling those changes back. Or even managing multiple configurations or modes so that problems can be issolated. I think whats is comming out of the winetools debate is better tools are needed for configuration management. This isn't very revolutionary. Its a natural part of the software development life cycle. As a project starts emerging from the development phase ways to provide better configuration management start showing themselves. Something that interfaces with the AppDB would be good. It would make things easier. I think, given the complaints given by the developers are also valid but so are the complaints made by the people trying to use the program and even the testers. Most other projects don't need such tools but this one does given what its trying to accomplish and the complexity of whats being accomplished. Besides even windows XP has a roll back feature now to fix problems. Why doesn't wine considering its attempting a bug for bug compatibility with windows. This would be a wise thing to implement just for sanities sake. So I'd like to provide an addition to Jason Greens brain dump * AppDB would have to be extended to be able to get and report this data, and it would make sense for each App's maintainer to be able to manage that information. * Biggest issue here is that this information could have a tendency to change very rapidly, so it might overload the app maintainers if they had to track this for each version of wine. What I think would make sense is to have regular snapshots (every 3 months?) and release a new version of "Winetools Plus" or whatever you want to call this thing a month later to give the maintainers time to update each of their apps based on the frozen version. (I think multiple versions of the AppDB would be useful. Similar to the Release and Release candidate type way of doing things.) * Data needed: AppID, AppVersionID, WineVersionID, Window Version, DLL Overrides, Window settings (fullscreen/windowed - sometimes and issue), Sound options, Video acceleration required, General notes or HOWTO's, etc. You would need separate overrides/settings for Installing vs. Running the app. * AppDB could dump this information to an xml format which "Winetools Plus" could be distributed with. Maybe have an option to download the latest xml file directly from winehq.org. * The 'Winetools Plus' front-end would just be a menu which would query all of the apps in the xml dump. The user picks they app they want to install, and it reads the necessary information, verifies the source installation media, and goes at it. * Applying patches to apps might get tricky (e.g., where wine only successfully runs version 1.5 of the app, but 1.0 is on the CD), but I'm sure it could be worked out. * A Way to roll back DLL overrides. * A Way store roll multiple registry configurations so that we establish a base reference configuration and a test configuration. Or even multiple test configurations. * An AppDB tool that allows changes to the DLL configuration in the AppDB to be made easily. * A way to detect the version of wine and provide configuration changes given that version of wine. * A way to report bugs to the appDB maintainers about configuration problems. A nice to have would be Something that allows the AppDB maintainers to distribute tweeks to the configuration changes in the AppDB to users. So that even if we aren't installing the programs on the system. The tweeks can still be made on the fly. This would eliminate having to blow away the .wine directory all the time. Blowing away the .wine directory is not a desirable. A way for wine developers to distribute a test configuration would also be a useful thing. That way we can test the software with what the developers want us to test rather then shooting in the dark only to see that the bug we reported is the same as some other bug we reported. Such tools would be useful in debugging the entire framework and speed up development. These are suggestions. I hope they help a bit.

Hi. For Andreas Jaeger: I CCed you, because you said on http://en.opensuse.org/Wishlist_Packages_that_are_already_there that Winetools got included for the next SUSE release. I hope you are the correct person to talk to or at least can forward this to someone who is. The following might be usefull information for you: I think a quote from http://www.winehq.org/site/download somewhat sums up the cencus on this list regarding Winetools: "WineTools [is] only recommended if installation or operability of Windows software failed on pure Wine. Since WineTools radically alters your Wine configuration please do not report bugs in programs with WineTools installed. Instead contact the author of WineTools Joachim von Thadden." Some other facts: Winetools is only sporadically updated for new versions of Wine (as http://www.von-thadden.de/Joachim/WineTools/ indicates; this site also contains some warnings regarding the support status). Winetools radically alters some vital Wine settings and thus makes many other apps fail. This leads to many users asking for help in #winehq on freenode. But nobody there wants to support winetools and thus can only suggest them to remove their .wine and redo it without winetools (which usually makes it work). Currently no Winetools developer works closely with the Wine developers to correct problems of interaction between Winetools and Wine. IMHO it would be best to either not include Winetools in a distribution or find a more active developer for it who is willing to support Winetools and cooperate with Wine developers. Or at least put up a big warning where it is read by a user that installs Winetools through the distributions package management. Jan

I have also started using Firefox in Wine for everything, namely because native lost a lib, old mozilla and opera and native firefox cause X to malloc() like mad (pkill -9 the broswer to cause X to free() ). I have found very few problems, mainly just images being color-reversed, and only on PNG of certain types. Also, Wine is MUCH faster if you have NPTL as your only threading method in glibc. (think a 15x improvement in speed here...) Wine also seems to know about the XDND X extension, cause it knows what GTK+2 widgets can be dragged and dropped onto, but otherwise the actual drag-and-drop procedure is a null effect. Ahh to hell with it, let's get to the speed tests. time wine firefox.exe, cold cache: real 0m48.895s (about 45s, really) user 0m4.116s sys 0m1.589s hot cache: real 0m9.287s (about 7.5s, really) user 0m3.966s sys 0m1.026s (Please note that the "real" time is off by about 1-2 seconds, to allow for me to quit Firefox.) Here we do the 7-Zip File Manager. Errors: err:listview:LISTVIEW_WindowProc unknown msg 2005 wp=00000001 lp=00000000 err:rebar:REBAR_AdjustBands Phase 1 failed, x=1000, maxx=-4, start=1, end=1 time wine 7zFM.exe, cold cache: real 0m34.815s (about 30s) user 0m1.044s sys 0m0.672s and with a hot cache: real 0m5.105s (about 4s, actually) user 0m0.997s sys 0m0.378s And now we do PuTTY: (no errors) Cold cache: real 0m39.382s (37s) user 0m1.023s sys 0m0.868s Hot cache: real 0m3.170s (no ajustment) user 0m0.978s sys 0m0.395s On a normal Windows system, the cache is always hot (all the core DLLs are always loaded), so the hot cache times actually rival a real Windows system, especially the one for PuTTY (which beats every test on a real Windows box I have done except those on more powerful hardware)

Potentially this is old news, but via Raymond Chen we learn of this page: http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dnlong/htm… Which talks about Vistas application compatibility. Interesting points that stand out: * They are dropping WinHelp and CHM support. You'll have to install it from their website for it to work (my first thought: wtf?) * IsBadReadPtr/IsBadWritePtr are now "banned". I wonder what that means. Presumably it just means they don't use them internally for the APIs anymore. * Windows will now silently fail to modify certain protected system files even if you're the administrator (basically the STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED error is suppressed to stop installers tripping up). * They dropped D3D RM. Not many apps use this but I think at least my fathers sailing game does. So there we have it - this appears to be the first release in which they simply started dropping APIs.

I would like to draw attention to bug 4502. This bug can cause any VB application to crash when the DatePicker control is used, and an attempt is made to assign a date value in VB code. Therefore, an attempt is made to coerce VT_DATE --> VT_VARIANT. However, VariantChangeTypeEx() does not support conversion of *any* kind of variant into VT_VARIANT, so the call fails, and this brings down the application. I was on half a mind to add the VT_VARIANT conversion to VariantChangeTypeEx() myself, but then I checked the tests for this operation, and it seems that the absence of support for VT_VARIANT is actually expected (unless I am misreading the code). Therefore, one of the following two things is happening: 1) There is some error in the reading of the typelib, since a Property Put should not have a VT_VARIANT parameter in the first place. 2) ITypeInfo::Invoke should do the VT_VARIANT conversion itself, precisely because VariantChangeTypeEx() won't do it. A new problem is that apps have been crashing with X Error of failed request: BadAtom (invalid Atom parameter) Major opcode of failed request: 17 (X_GetAtomName) Atom id in failed request: 0x0 every day. This is on Ubuntu 5.10 with updates, and might be a problem with the X server. I'll try updating to Ubuntu 6.04 flight 5 and see if that makes it go away. Anyway, since Firefox is in fairly good good shape, I'm now running putty under wine instead of using linux's built-in ssh. Works fine. Three annoyances: 1) takes a while (ten seconds) to open up session after clicking 'open'. 2) every keystroke yields the console message fixme:imm:ImmReleaseContext (0xb014e, 0x7fdbee18): stub 3) It took me a while to figure out how to copy and paste in putty, since Linux doesn't have the 'copy / paste' items in the upper left corner menu. (ctrl-insert and shift-insert work fine.) But that's a linux window manager issue, not a wine issue. Overall, I'm productive and happy. Success! Since those are the *only two gui apps I use* on Linux, I'm running out of things to dogfood! Oh, once in a while I need an image editor. Free mirror for .deb APT repository (forwarded correspondance)

Hey guys. For the past few days I've been corresponding with Pieter de Bruijn, who has graciously offered us a huge amount of bandwidth to host the APT repository for our .deb packages, rather than having to put it in the sourceforge webspace where it is rather slow and times out a lot. By my estimates, we get about 800 downloads of Wine from the APT repository per day, which is about 10 gigabytes. All other package downloads from sourceforge combined constitute about 4000 downloads, so roughly 20% of our package downloads are using the APT repository. As for what percentage of our user base uses current .debs, I don't know, because more or less up to date Wine packages derived from mine can be also grabbed from the Ubuntu backports server, the Ubuntu development server, and likely some other place I don't know of. It wouldn't surprise me if over half our users were on Ubuntu at this point, though. One important advantage of Peter's offer is that it allows us much more storage space, possibly including multiple APT repositories for different distributions. This would be far preferable to the ~100 megs or so we get on Sourceforge, which can barely fit one package. Anyway, I'd like to inform everyone about the hosting offer and gather some additional feedback, if you have any comments about the change. Thanks, Scott Ritchie

Updated DDraw over WineD3D patch

Hi, I've uploaded anothe update of my DDraw->WineD3D patch to http://stud4.tuwien.ac.at/~e0526822/. It fixes some refcounting issues and the D3D renderer of the Half-Life 1 Steam version works. It also takes the merged header patches into account ;) I am quite busy the next time, so I won't be able to do a lot ddraw development. I'll continue to send patches, but only header changes, no added functionality. I'll keep myself up to date and anser feedback mails, but I don't think I've the time to do intensive development. Some Processor(s) specific environment variables

Hi, there are some processor specific environment variables: NUMBER_OF_PROCESSORS=1 PROCESSOR_ARCHITECTURE=x86 PROCESSOR_IDENTIFIER=x86 Family 6 Model 9 Stepping 8, GenuineIntel PROCESSOR_LEVEL=6 PROCESSOR_REVISION=0908 (from a VMware box). These variables exist in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet \Control\Session Manager\Environment. Psinfo.exe (from SysInternals) uses these env-variables to produce some information. When I remove the entries and reboot the box they are auto-generated again. My question is where to put the generation of these variables? We most likely want this with some defaults in wine.inf. Furthermore GetSystemInfo() could be changed, but that seems cheating. Any ideas? Cheers, Paul.

While we are on the subject of dogfooding things, to the best of anyone's knowledge, has anyone ever tried to do something as crazy as oh i dunno, defragging their hard drive (or even one of the virtual partitions) with win98's defragger? What about running win98's gui'based scandisk on either of the above? I'd do it, but my linux machine still needs a new motherboard. Anyone got a test machine they need to reformat? need advise with new open-source project

Hi, I'm currently trying to start a new open-source project that will do the same as WINE did with the windows API, but for a Sony framework, named OPEN-R. This framework allows users to write programs for Sony's robots (namely the dog AIBO). But Sony has discontinued the robotics division and they won't provide support for the framework. I already have the initial code running. I can already compile the code for a non-MIPS platform (their robots are MIPS based) and also load the code and run it. Of course there are still many function stubs. My question is about legal things. Is it considered reverse-engineering to re-implement the Sony's framework (the API is somewhat documented)? Did you have some law problems with Microsoft? One more thing: How do you do with the headers? do you use original Microsoft's headers or did you rewrite them? I'm currently using Sony's headers, which can't be redistributed. So I also have a problem here. How can I rewrite the headers, so that they aren't considered a copy?? I would love if you could answer my questions, so that I can make the project public as soon as possible. Hi guys, Thanks a lot for all your replies... After further inspection, it seems the problem is when I try to share display lists from one context to another. I've attached the program and the source code, so you can try it. As you can see, I first create a context and then I create a second context but sharing the display lists of the first one. If you run this program, you'll see the BadMatch error I was reporting in my first email. However, if you don't share display lists (that is, change the line Context.Create(0, 0, true) to Context.Create(0, 0, false)), everything works ok. Jesse, I've made the changes proposed in those patches, but it didn't work :-( By the way, I'm using wine .9.9. Hi I'm pretty new to wine, and this is my first post to the wine-devel list....I hope this is the correct place to send my question I'm having problems with wglMakeCurrent. I wrote a small OpenGL test program, but it's not working under wine (it works perfectly on Windows). When I call wglMakeCurrent, wine outputs this error: X Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes) Major opcode of failed request: 144 (GLX) Minor opcode of failed request: 5 (X_GLXMakeCurrent) Serial number of failed request: 120 Current serial number in output stream: 120 I activated the debug output for opengl, and I can see that the problem is a mismatch between the default visual ID and my program visual ID. At the top of the debug output, I see this: trace:opengl:X11DRV_setup_opengl_visual Visual ID 21 Chosen and later, when I create my OpenGl context: trace:opengl:X11DRV_SetPixelFormat - VISUAL_ID 0x23 Obviously, the problem is that my visual ID doesn't match with the X-Window's default, but I need to work using my visual (because I need alpha planes) Any known workaround or is this a bug on wine's implementation of wglMakeCurrent? ddraw design flaw

I have found a design flaw in ddraw and described it in my 'World of Warcraft 0.10 Public Test Real (PTR)' thread. Why has nobody adressed this issue? In my eyes it is a severe design flaw if an application can't unload ddraw.dll without side effects (especially if this side-effect is that all opengl/directx applications are unusable after that). So please, will someone explain me why nobody wants to fix this? It's nothing bad now, but if WoW still loads Survey.dll (and thus ddraw.dll) in the final public release many people will demand a fix. Very few people play on the PTR, but there are quite a lot who play WoW under wine.. and they will not be happy if they can't play anymore. tom

After poking at the apps they tested with, the conclusion is: they wanted something that could run Access and Oracle client apps, and Wine just wasn't there yet. It still isn't, judging by my quick tests. Given that the world kind of treats this as a must, perhaps it could be added as a criterion for a 1.0 release. Oracle Express Client under Wine - install fails in advapi.CreateService

At the risk of posting too much information, here's another roadblock faced by an important potential user. keeptool.com's hora.exe (one of the apps needed by the european government desktop migration) is an Oracle DBA helper tool, and testing it means connecting to an Oracle database. That means, I think, installing the Oracle client library under Wine. Sadly, this fails during install; the installer claims that advapi.CreateService is crashing. I heard that SPSS was one of the apps governments like (so they crunch statistics -- who knew? :-), so I tried running the free eval. It wouldn't even install. The problems were already described in http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=4700 Looks like an msi problem, but there might be something more general wrong; all wine apps hang for about twenty seconds at a certain point during the install, which is pretty strange. - Dan p.s. one downside of using wine to run firefox as your main browser is it's a bit more dangerous to do the rm -rf ~/.wine needed to do a really clean install of a test app :-) so this test was done with a fairly cluttered fake wine directory. I heard KeepTool was an app used by some government developers, so I tried installing the free trial from http://keeptool.com. Sadly, the installer complained I needed IE5 or later. The registry key trick I've been using, [Software\\Microsoft\\Internet Explorer] "Version"="6.0.2900.2180" didn't seem to do the trick this time. Any suggestions on how to get past that? Can't run DirectX games on x86_64 biarch Linux

Hi all. About half a year ago I replaced my old desktop by an AMD64 box and my previous x86 Linux from Scratch (LFS) installation by a x86_64 multilib LFS. And since then I'm not able to run any DirectX title anymore that used to work before. This is the way I usually compile wine (GCC 3.4.4): ./configure --prefix=/opt/wine-CVS20060307 \ --x-libraries=/usr/X11R6/lib && make depend && make && su -c "make install" Here are some games that used to work on my old LFS, their behaviour and the error messages. I've also attached a short log of each game to this messages. All these logs have been recorded with the CVS version of wine from 2006/03/05. Age of Empires 2 starts up, I can hear sound. When I click on "Single Player", the game hangs with the following message: err:seh:setup_exception stack overflow 24 bytes in thread 0009 eip 55726262 esp 55ca0fe8 stack 0x55ca1000-0x55db0000 Backgammon Pro is an older (7 years or so) backgammon game, quite simple and 2D, but uses DirectDraw. I've also done some more tests with other games like Revolt, Anno 1503, Half-Life 2, and the errors all look alike. I have tried the following things to solve the problem: * Deleted my ~/.wine, over and over again ;-) * Compiled wine without any optimization flags * Compiled wine on a x86 Debian box and copied the installation over * Copied my ~/.wine to that Debian box, where most of the games run fine * Tried different wine versions, starting with pre-0.9 versions, ending with the latest CVS version * Used winetools to setup an environment with many native DLLs. Installation of most of the software including IE worked fine, but did not help though. * Searched this mailing list archive and the web for similar errors Something is definitely going wrong with this. DDraw->WineD3D refcounting hack

Hello, I have a a question regarding some code that might be rejected by Alexandre when I submit it. The problem is that I have to do an refcount hack in my new ddraw code to destroy textures properly. I CC this mail to AJ because it's him who has the last word ;) WineD3D and Direct3D7 have different ideas about handling mipmap textures. In d3d7 they are complex surfaces - a bunch of surfaces with a root and sublevels. All surfaces in the compound have their own refcount, but they are all destroyed when the root is destroyed. In WineD3D there's the texture as a container, and the surfaces in the container have their refcount linked to the container(See the patch H. Verbeet sent a few days ago). In d3d7 the application destroys the first surface to release the whole texture. My first idea was to Release the WineD3DTexture. It would then call the Release method of all the sublevel ddraw surfaces, which would destroy them. This works for a correctly written application, but applications call GetAttachedSurface for the sublevels, which addrefs, and many do not Release the sublevels after GetAttachedSurface(). This leaves the sublevel surfaces with a refcount of 2 or more when the root is destroyed. To make sure that they are destroyed, I set their refcount to 1 when the root is destroyed. When the last reference to the WineD3D Texture is released, wineD3D will destroy the sublevel surfaces. Is such a thing acceptable for Wine? Does anyone have a better solution? If you need some code to look at, I'll upload an updated patch to my homepage later. Thanks, Stefan

My guess: this old bug is in dlls/x11drv/keyboard.c or dlls/user/message.c, something about dead keys implementation. Can somebody help me with a little explanation or documentation? Any problems with this patch? I have not received any additional comments. And it does fix at least two games in question (see bug reports). And I have not seen any side-affects from it either. There could have been a Wine call just before, that was wrongly implemented, returning an invalid pointer or such. Just returning an error may hide that error for many lines, to crash in some much more unrelated area eventually. Tracking such dependant error causes is already hard enough and hiding an invalid pointer access or other invalid parameter by checking for its validness makes it even harder if an application doesn't ridicully check every possible error condition and believe me I haven't seen many programs that really do that. Crashing may be not what most end users very much like but it is in my opinion just as fine than displaying a dialog box that an unrecoverable error has occurred and that it must shut down and much better than relying on the application to actually do proper error checking, but it makes the life of every Wine programmer just a little bit easier and Wine still being far from a release state can use any help on the programmer side. Wine's policy is to do parameter checking only if Windows is doing it in all versions too and sometimes even then only when there is at least one application that depends on it to work properly. Lets look at the example at hand. There is a function that does not check the pointer in Windows. If an application crashes in that function because of that, this means basically that the application did not do proper pointer checking already and then it is very questionable that it would check the error indication of that function at all, since it wouldn't get such an error indication on Windows anyhow. Also this application will either crash on Windows too, and then it is the programmers problem to make this application behave better or it does not crash on Windows because some previous function does behave differently than the Wine equivalent and then every wine programmer would like to know as soon as possible that this error occurres, not 5000 lines further down the program. If you would talk about a stable and final Wine release (which with Wine chasing the Windows API propably never will be) this might be a little different but we talk about a software project heavily under development. Problem while compiling wine-0.9.9 source on solaris

I tried to build Wine Library on Solaris 10 platform today. It gave error while compiling dll/dxerr8 module. The error message says "Don't know how to make target: install-lib" I compared the Makefiles and added the target "install-lib" for dxerr8 module, like below: Makefile: install install-lib:: install_lib $(WIN16_INSTALL) install_lib: $(MODULE) $(MKINSTALLDIRS) $(DESTDIR)$(dlldir) $(INSTALL_PROGRAM) $(MODULE) $(DESTDIR)$(dlldir)/$(MODULE) It was able to build the dxerr8 module. But similar error message is getting repeated for other modules as well. I would like to fix it in one shot, probably a fix in the configure script is needed. When I rum make command it shows the following error, can somebody please help me in to come out of this. Repeatable crash in firefox

This morning, using wine from cvs from a few days ago, I ran into a reproducible crash in firefox on wine. I have the Flash plugin installed; that might be involved, but the same recipe doesn't seem to crash Linux firefox. Floating point problem in WineEngGetGlyphOutline

I have started to get a floating point problem "First chance exception: invalid float operation in 32-bit code (0x00e6b6f9).". I don't know a lot about floating point but from what I have read, the FLDCW most likely is unmasking an interrupt when it reloads the control word. Winedbg does not seem to have support for displaying floating point registers and control word etc. Can someone point me in the direction of getting to the bottom os this? DirectDraw -> WineD3D patch

Hi, I've brought my DirectDraw over WineD3D patch in a form where I want to show it to the public for review. I've uploaded it to http://stud4.tuwien.ac.at/~e0526822/, where it is described in detail(below the game list). If there are no fundamental objections against it, I'll start sending patches for WineD3D. So I suspect that Blizzard added something related to this function to the 0.10 version which breaks something. When the screen turns black, its just the screen, everything else works, keyboard for sure, I can press 'Esc' to get out of the game, not sure about the mouse though.. Does anyone have an idea how to fix this? tom

Hello! I am now preparing patch, which should add unimplemented functionality. While preparing the patch, I've got a couple of questions: 1. There is a menu item "Associations". Should I implement it as a control panel applet? Anyway, it's pretty clear, it shouldn't be an integral part of winefile, as it isn't winefile specific. 2. Should Find File be a stand-alone application? 3.What library should pack/unpack use? Should it use zip/unzip utilities or some dll? Last week I experimented a bit with it and I managed to get some simple vertex shader examples working (for instance http://www.codesampler.com/source/dx8_vs11_shader_simple.zip and the dolphin sample from sdk although with small issues). If I run bigger apps like 3dmark2001 and others there are huge drawing issues. I'm not very familiar with the shader/drawing code (and vertex shaders in general) so it is very difficult for me to debug. You can try the patch attached to this email but it is far from complete. Hi all, When I try to install AutoCAD 2000 on Wine 0.9.9 (hmm... it is cvs checkout about 04 march 2006 21:00 GMT+0500 PERM. I do not remember precise time) I get error in console: err:module:map_image Section .rsrc too large (f000+e000/1c000) and installation programm draw error box with message "Cannot load c:\windows\temp\_ISTMP0.DIR\iutil.dll" but the file is present... Age of Mythology was working fine, but now all vertex data is totally messed up (2D is menus and stuff is fine). It has been this way in CVS for the past few days, when I first noticed it. I thought it might be my local changes so I didn't report it, but testing with the new 0.9.9 it had the same behavior (i.e. not my fault :) After debugging things for a while it seems that problem lies in vertex data with RHW set. It seems that AoM is using all pre-lit and pre-transformed vertex data and this is not being processes properly. I think the problem is with drawprim.c:drawStridedSlow() but I haven't been able to figure out exactly where yet. If anyone has any ideas (or patches!) I'd be glad to help debug. ddraw/specular lighting

Hello, A lot of ddraw games recquires specular lighting to work (Syberia I, Settlers IV, etc...). Unfortunately, specular lighting is not implemented in ddraw. Does the change ddraw/direct 7 WINED3D resolve this problem? Otherwise, does somebody forsee to work on that? Recently created font problem - anyone see similar?

Hi, I found that the following patch, committed to CVS on 23/02/06 at 20:33:06 made all my Wine system fonts squashed up and unreadable, which in turn made a mess of formatting in some dialog boxes. I backed the patch out from a current tree and the problem went away. Anyone else see this behaviour? I am wondering what the purpose of this patch is as the fonts were quite OK before it was committed, and now they are completely unreadable on this system. Any thoughts before I submit a patch to put this back the way it was? John. Hi Folks, We've run into a bit of a snag around Wineconf 2006. Huw was trying to pull something together for this summer, but he's asked to beg off (he's going to be out with a thyroid operation for a bit; prognosis looks good, but...). Rob stepped up and volunteered to pull something together in Reading in the UK, and has been a good sport about getting it together. Sadly, the dates haven't been working out very well. Rob and I were trying to get something together for May 13th (all other dates in May don't work for one reason or another), but then internal folks here started telling us that that was way too soon. The problem with trying for June is that travel costs in June are astronomical; plane flights for example are twice the cost in June than in May. So what I'd like to ask is that people that are interested in coming to Wineconf give us a bit of feedback: http://www.winehq.org/site/wineconf/survey06 Also, I'd like to request that follow ups to this shift over to the Wineconf mailing list: http://www.winehq.org/mailman/listinfo/wineconf For those of you that don't know, Wineconf is our kinda sorta annual technical conference. It's a place where Wine developers gather to heckle Alexandre, talk about the mythical Wine 1.0, and marvel that there are 60 other people as crazy as themselves <grin>. There isn't usually any fee, although you have to bear your own travel costs. Hi Mike, You could have understood my requirement. I am looking at WINE to get this thing done. If not supported in WINE, then what other possible way, I can achieve this. I have to do some windows registry modifications and start/stop/query about windows services from a Linux box. I have to remotely install my agent on a windows box. That is my goal. Launch native Linux apps?

Is it possible to set Wine up so that it can launch native Linux apps? For example, set your native copy of Acrobat Reader to be associated to PDF extensions in Wine, or even use the Linux plugin while using a browser? BadMatch in glXCreateGLXPixmap (bug 3102)

"Star wars: knights of the old republic" dies on startup (see bug 3102) with BadMatch when create_glxpixmap() calls glXCreateGLXPixmap(). The man page for glXCreateGLXPixmap: GLXPixmap glXCreateGLXPixmap( Display *dpy, XVisualInfo *vis, Pixmap pixmap ) BadMatch is generated if the depth of pixmap does not match the depth value reported by core X11 for vis, or if pixmap was not created with respect to the same screen as vis. So can any xlib expert here give me some code to check for those 2 cases? Any other ideas what could be wrong? I believe a PBUFFER is involved, not the actual screen. getwinegit.sh 0.21 released

Hellooo, punctual to the new wine-0.9.9-release there is a new version of my getwinegit.sh-script. No great changes but some smaller ones. First of all, the logger got more informative if you experience problems with your getwinegit.sh-installation. The second thing is a better checking of the config-vars. Not the supergreat errorhandling i would like it to be but now there is something that checks if the vars are set and so on. The last thing is that the readme got a bit more informatical (dependencies and compatibility of shells). Maybe there were some more minor changes in the script but... i can't remember ;). Current version is now 0.21. PS: the release is now packed in a tar.bz2 as requested :D

OK, I've been using OOo2.0.1 and Firefox 1.5 running under wine cvs for about two weeks. Firefox is quite usable; I read gmail in it routinely. There's just one ugly little rendering problem: http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=4441 And the stars on each message in the list look funny, but they're recognizable. Worst thing is, when you try to copy from Firefox to another app, the clipboard is bare: http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=4523 But overall it's not bad. OpenOffice is less happy. It locks up quickly in the File / Open dialog box: http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=4525 So... at this point, Wine+firefox pass the dogfood challenge for people who just need to do basic web browsing, but needs some work for people who need word processing. - Dan -- Wine for Windows ISVs: http://kegel.com/wine/isv

New d3d8 code and FFXIBench3 - pretty good!

I just tried the new d3d8 code with FFXiBench3 again tonight and it's pretty good! The textures are mostly there and there are only a handful of recurring glitches. This demo is downloadable from http://www.playonline.com. Some textures had their colors munged up. I assume this is related to earlier discussions about RGB_ v.s. BGR_ formats. What those usually seem to do is retuning the (internal) error code. Relying on such a return value being anything than 0 or !0 of course would be bad programming, since there will be potential differences between different platforms but it does happen.
