Custom Windows Program Loader

Hey All, I've been trying to solve a problem that WINE seems to have tacked quite properly: I need to run a Windows application under Windows OS using custom DLLs in place of Windows-kernel DLLs. For instance, I wanna be able to run the Notepad application loading all its required DLLs from the Windwos/System path but, for instance, user32.dll, that I will provide as a custom implementation. As I can seem, WINE program loader does the job, but not under Windows. Does anybody have any clue on how to make this "magic" happens on a Windows environment (possibly inside cygwin) ? Does anybody know any other tool capable of providing this functionality ? Thanks a lot, FLu-X

This patch is meant to stimulate a discussion about how to deal with the fact we cannot reasonable support obsolete versions of wine ;^) For example we would like to be able to age Test Results and probably do not want submittions of test results or bugs that are from older versions of wine. On the other hand we should accept new bug reports from CVS and at least our current release. Since we cannot simply delete old versions in bugzilla I came up the following patch. Hi all, Was trying to install ermapper 7 under wine (80 meg download): http://www.ermapper.com/download_files/ERMapper7.01CompactRC1.exe ermapper is a fairly well known and used gis (geographic information systems) application, which views and edits the popular ecw format for storing satellite data and other geographic raster data. I asked my wife what apps she uses daily on Windows, and tested all eight with wine from cvs this weekend. Results: 2 of the eight actually installed and ran properly. She was duly impressed - she thought it was going to be zero. Apps that Work: Macromedia Fireworks (2002) Font Xplorer Lite Apps that install but don't run: Macromedia Dreamweaver (2002) Can't install: Microsoft Office '97 Adobe Photoshop Elements Ulead Photoimpact Musicmatch Jukebox FamilyTreeMaker 6 I filed bugzilla reports for all the problems I found. tracking interprocess comms.

Hi, I am trying to capture output that an app normally sends to other processes under windows operation. I know that in the case of major M$ apps this will be my ole but I believe that in the more general case this must be by simulating keystrokes I tried WINEDEBUG="+relay" but the output file filled the 1.7GB !! of free space I had before the app got as far at putting up the main window. could s.o. advice on a more suitable channel to watch. Wine regression testing: PIT_

Regression testing with Wine is a pain in the butthole. For very bad reasons: Stuff that is simple to fix, but haven't been. I'd like to help improve that situation. Example: ======== I want to find which patch ruins an application. The application, according to one note, worked in 2003. I decide to try and see how it really runs with the 2003 version of Wine mentioned in the note. I then spend several days pulling various releases, just trying to compile them. They all fail miserably, because some fix required to compile correctly with newer Linux versions is /missing/. For example, - any Wine before 2004-01-02 won't work because it won't compile against newer ALSA versions. - any Wine before 2003-12-01 needs patches to the build system before 'make depend' will even run. I've been at it for a week and I've managed to fix the above two. _They're really simple things, but they take a lot of time to figure out._ Currently I'm working with two other problems: - Wine fails to correctly invoke the debugger. Winedbg shows 'Usage: blah blah'. Seems 'wine' calls it with incorrect parameters. - Wine fails to start any application, complaining about 'kthreads' something or the other. I imagine that if I spend a few more weeks on the above problems, I can find patches in Wine CVS that fixes the exact problems I'm seeing. I've already wasted a week of my time on problems that someone else already fixed. Spending two or more weeks doing this is not exactly on my fun-things-to-do-before-I-die list. I'd like to see a general solution to this entire problem. What can be done to alleviate? ============================== Once I find a patch which makes an earlier version actually compile, I'd like to propose that for a backport. If approved/applied, the next person that checks out the release would check out a version containing the backported patches. That would fix the problem and allow people to do proper regression testing, so developers and QA people can spend their time doing development and QA instead of redoing already done effort trying to get an older version to run. I'm not sure how this would work with CVS. I'm from an SVN world where tagging is a 0-cost tree-copy operation, and any patches can be applied to the tag with history and all showing that the tag's been modified. If it can't work with CVS, perhaps the tags can be created in Troy's SVN repo and patches applied there? Not sure. Suggestions, please, people.

Restoring resolution when exiting: some questions

Hello! Different games do not restore resolution when exiting. I tried to modify wine a bit and came to several problems: - I used destroy_whole_window api as a point to restore resolution. However I am not sure it is not the best place and it does not help in some cases (e.g., if Wine is crashing). So what could be the most relevant point (TerminateProcess?) to restore resolution? - I am restoring the resolution using default values to X11DRV_ChangeDisplaySettingsEx. How to manage the case with several applications having different resolutions? Thanks for any help on this! Julien

[Need a review]: New directory object for wineserver

I've been working on a new directory object as a replacement for the server's named space. Attached is the working patch with directory, symlink and device objects. I would really appreciate your review of it. Some things still need a cleanup. But my main concern is the name_lookup function. I tried again to install Office 97 on today's vanilla wine from cvs. Here's what I did, from the start: sudo mount -o loop -t iso9660 mso97.iso /mnt rm -rm .wine winecfg # choose WinME emulation # Override odbccp32 # quit wine \\mnt\\setup.exe It worked great, right up to the end, where it failed with the dialog box "Accwiz.dll was unable to register itself in the system registry". Migrate website documentation to the Wiki

Hi everyone, I'm willing to move every simple textual (static content) page from the website to the Wiki and link from the website to the corresponding pages. The advantages are obvious: - makes it easy to keep these pages up-to-date - makes it easy for non-dev. contributors to keep these pages up-to-date The problems are: - when clicking on a link from winehq to the wiki the left menu will change which can be confusing I notice that this has already been made for the janitorial page. No idea , dont use Notes/Lotus but I would guess it is picking up the fact that the alt-key is still down when it get the focus back and taking it as a keypress. It is not std bahaviour to take that as a keydown event but I would try to get out of it as you would if you pressed the alt in the app and then changed your mind. (Esc. Cntl_C , I dont know Notes.) That is assuming you have a problem with it. If you are just curious about why, I think the answer is the non-std way it is handing key-states. HTH. ------------------------ I can escape my way out of it by pressing escape though that escape event also translates into whatever the action would by if the alt key wasnt in the picture.So if you were writing a new note and pressed escape, it would attempt to close the note. Alternatively, you can hit alt-alt to cancel it which is slightly less anoying but none the less still annoying. I did notice one other thing on this. Alt-down event (without tab) in notes displays many short cut reminders. It will place little tags over vaiour buttons on the screen to say alt-buttonx will activate that button. For example, it places a "1" over the Send button (among other things) when composing a new note to indicate pressing alt-1 will send the note. The corresponding alt-up event will hide the short cut reminders and leave the file menu highlighted (as expected). Then pressing alt again will cacnel out that highlight of the file menu. Under real windows, the behaviour is different. Alt-tabing away from notes, and then comming back to it leaves notes as if nothing was ever pushed. It does briefly display the shorcut reminders but by the time I switch back to the notes window, there is no sign of alt ever being pressed.

OK, I think I've cracked it. After a lot of heaving and grunting I managed to reinstall Dragon Naturally Speaking into a fresh user account with the help of sidenet. This time I carefully documented the steps I took so as to be sure it was reproducable. What worked: wine-20050524; sidenet-1.8.1; Dragon NS v7 prefered En. and v7 pref Fr Ensoniq 1371 pci "soundblaster" wot wont: winecfg based wine releases ; more recent sidenet on previous above wine. muse5.1 cmipci (too quiet) Required natives: comdlg32.dll only. It may be possible to configure your host to to a WINS lookup for gethostbyname using samba; check your samba docs. Wine's netbios() can use a WINS server, but I'm not sure what call your app is using.
