IP address works but Servername crashes...

I have an app that works fine when connecting to a Firebird database server by IP address but crashes when trying to connect by server name... Would I be correct in guessing that wine does not bother looking for WINS server when trying to resolve a name to an address? running two instances of WoW

works fine with cedega, but doesn't work with wine. It's like the two windows steal each other the focus (even if they are in different workspaces), it starts to flicker and both game instances are unusable (the whole desktop is unusable). Also, if I'm running one instance and minimize/maximize the game it seems like wine minimizes and maximizes the window about 3-5 times (eg. it also starts to flicker). Soem time ago I examined the wine code and found out that someone calls the win32 function for minmizing/maximizing the window several times. Are you aware of this? If there any intension to change this behaviour and in that case, should I provide more information? thanks tom

I'm a big linux fan. However, due to my many windows applications of which I rely heavily on, I cannot move totally to linux. I would love to help in the development of wine but I have very little programming experience. Do you have plans to developing a 'distributed computing' type of system, in the mold of folding@home maybe? I think if you developed an algorithm that would look for windows tendencies and possible solutions where people who use windows could put on their computer, it would help the cause immensely.

dlls/ntdll/exception.c / unit-at-a-time problem?

Hi, dlls/ntdll/exception.c is showing strange behaviour. If compiled with -O2 it shows different behaviour than when compiled with -O2 -fno-unit-at-a-time. The latter options should only be responsible for reordering functions. Is reordering of function order a problem with the DEFINE_REGS_ENTRYPOINT() functions in this file? I see the original function being moved from after the above asm stub to below the asm stub for instance, but the relay32.s looks like it doesnt matter. Ciao, Marcus

I want to add "Gold/Silver/Garbage" etc. ratings for Wine 0.9 for some apps. It doesn't seem like I can do this without erasing the old ratings. I'm not particularly interested in deleting the results of testing a version of Wine with some app. Could this please be changed to allow more ratings than just one? (It's also a bit annoying that I have to erase the workarounds to make an app work with <version x> of Wine. What if someone needs to go back to that version to do regression testing? They'll be sc_____... I don't enjoy having to remove perfectly valid information :-(.)

winecfg dosdevices unusable

Hi, just getting into a fresh installation with 0.9 ran up winecfg and tried to add a device for my dvd burner. editing the device name is unusable. No cursor , then after a first character is entered the edit seems to jump to insert mode and puts the cursor at the begingin of the line. There seems no way enter text normally to enter a device name. This whole interface seems badly broken. I had to fall back to good old command line to sort out the mess made by winecfg and add the devices I need. Disappointing start to 0.9 , I wonder what new user would make of that. hmm.

Thanks for the fix to the length of reported string fix... I had a small .AVI file on a progress bar form that caused wine to crash... Is there a known problem with wine and the little animated icons (avi files)? For testing I temporarily removed the avi from the progress indication form and continued testing... Hi! Congratulations for releasing wine-0.9! However, I still have a problem running a program. It's a NT4.0 only program (at least its vendor is telling it) which I would like to run in wine. It's a special software made by Siemens to support operation and maintenance of their telephone exchanges. The installation starts, but after clicking the first "Next", just after the initial information about the program, a small dialog saying "Could not determine operating system. Exiting" pops up and the installation terminates. I've set the windows version in winecfg to NT4.0, as the program expects, however I've tried another versions too and the program is ignoring it totally. It's just clean CVS wine installation (no windows). Is there a possibility to find, which tricks is the program trying to determine an OS it's running on ? I've tried WINEDEBUG=+relay, found the place where the dialog was requested but I didn't find anything suspicious before. With regards, Pavel Troller

Hi, Yesterday, after having manually closed some old fixed bugs, I discussed with infyquest and tlambregts on irc and tlambregts told us that instead of manually closing the bugs, bugzilla had a "change several bugs at once function" It was then discussed that bugs that are FIXED and where resolution is not LATER or DUPLICATE or REMIND should be marked CLOSED as the fixes have been integrated in an official release (namely 0.9). http://bugs.winehq.org/buglist.cgi?query_format=&short_desc_type=allwordssu… FYI the CLOSED status means: The bug is considered dead, the resolution is correct. Any zombie bugs who choose to walk the earth again must do so by becoming REOPENED. Unfortunately bugzilla doesn't allow to close bugs directly from their fixed state so you have to verify them before and thus it will send two mails for each bug closed. I don't think it was possible to turn off change notification at that time (tlambregts even told me that the two spam bugs were normal because of the way bugzilla works) but I cannot verify it as my account has been gently disabled... However it seems that ivanleo didn't like my CLOSING session because some of the bugs were not "fixed". Can someone tell me how a bug can be not fixed and marked as resolved-fixed (see my query) ? The discussion on IRC took place at a time when there were many of you (vitamin, Thunderbird, kbln, infyquest, _Marcus_, tlambregts, cmorgan and so on) and nobody seemed to think it would be a bad idea to close bugs that were fixed before the latest release came out. I just tried Internet Explorer with Wine 0.9 and the fonts on the msn page don't render. I did a trace and get this for one text out operation. I vaguely remember something about installing fonts, but I would have thought there would be a fallback if no font was found. winelib app compatibility between wine versions

our winelib app was originally built/run under wine-*-20050524 and we also ran the binaries under the next versions of wine, for example under wine-20050725. But under wine-20050930 the binary failed to start with 'segmentation fault'. i also tried to run notepad.exe.so from wine-20050524 binary rpm under wine-20050930 -> it failed with the same error. Checked on Fedora 3. wine20050930 was installed from binary rpm. Has something been changed in the 'binary' sense or one just should not assume the compatibility between versions for winelib apps ? A lot of people have had this same problem in the past. Managing it is a problem but there is a solution. Establish a policy that all regression testing be done within the two latest versions. If it doesn't run now and it did a year ago consider it a different problem. This is the only solution that has worked in the past. It requires a test suite be built that can easily test Windows, not Wine, and it requires that the tests be run before the next version comes out. Versions need to come out at longer intervals with the minor updates in between. This is similar to what is happening now except that when 0.9 goes to 1.0 or 0.91 all previous versions should be discontinued. I suggest setting 0.9 as a base and fixing what is broken in it without any regression testing. Do regression testing as monthly updates come out. In six months or so bring out a 0.91 version and kill 0.9. Trying to regression test back to the original version is likely to have you trying to run 8 bit code.

World of Warcraft 1.8.1 in Wine 0.9 issues

-Sound only works when Hardware Acceleration is set to Emulated and Driver Emulation is turned on in winecfg. I have nforce2 sound, but I think this is true for everyone judging by the gentoo forums. -Sound doesn't work very well it cuts out periodically and there are constant buffer underrun errors unless you manually hack WoW's config files to specify SoundBufferSize to be 150 or lower. -With the DirectX renderer, WoW doesn't get past the login screen (after login screen goes black). This is an improvement for me over previous versions though, which would simply lock up my entire machine on launch. (output from Wine below) -With the OpenGL render, WoW doesn't get past the login screen either. But instead of going to black, the graphics just freeze in place. (output from Wine below) This maybe a regression -- in 20050725 I could get in game and walk around, but that was also before the 1.8.1 WoW patch, although the 1.8.1 patch contains only minor fixes. -When exiting the game, your previous resolution isn't restored. I don't think this is specific to WoW. Wine should store the current resolution and restore it on exit. Also, interestingly, the DirectX renderer in full screen is much faster for me than the OpenGL one. I know the game's OpenGL renderer is less developed, but on Windows the difference isn't as drastic, and seeing as that DirectX support is younger I expected it to be slower. Nvidia users might have better luck with DirectX/OpenGL than me. I know there are other players that can get in game, I'm guessing they're nvidia users. I'm running the fglrx 8.16.20 drivers on a Radeon 9700 Pro. I'll try with the new 8.18 drivers later and post if there's any difference. Output from running with OpenGL render below. Oh, and while I'm complaining about the AppDB :-).. I'm getting slightly annoyed with the <b>over hers</b> that's printed in every version of every application. What's that? Debug output? Use  if you're debugging a production system, for c...... .... ;-). (It's been there for a month or so, I think.)
