Release schedule after release?

Looking at the current user docs raised a question as to how to update the 'Getting Wine' section. I know from the past that many users don't know that Wine has been up to this point on a monthly release schedule. Between this ignorance, and binary distributions' stable and unstable trees, the average user may frankly be using 'any old version' (meaning, one cannot even hazard a guess as to what the 'most likely version' they might have is, one has to ask each user specifically) of Wine when they show up on wine-user with questions. So I find it important to document this and hopefully get everybody more or less on the same page, as it were --or at least within a known range of pages. Hopefully, for the release, we could count on that for a limited time, since it is to be hoped that 'everyone' will upgrade to or install that instead of some other previous beta. But the docs, of course, have to be valid for the future as well as (to a limited extent) the past. So how will one "Get Wine" after the release? Will there continue to be monthly public betas? Or will the release schedule change? Will the binary policy change? Meaning that the public betas (if they still exist) will not be available in distribution repositories, but Wine will now maintain its own stable and unstable trees, and only releases will be available to the distro repositories? Will there be different policies or levels of availability for different distros (maybe a Knoppix user will be able to get the unstable beta builds from Sid contrib, but a SuSE user won't)? What should I tell the people? Thanks for any guidance, Holly

winedbg not starting

AppDb account problem

A bit over a week ago I received an email telling me that my AppDb account would soon get deleted due to inactivity. I don't really remember creating an AppDb account but it is possible I did. So I went there to check it out but of course I could not remember my password. So I typed my email address and clicked on 'Email me a New Password' but got the following error message: Sorry, that user (fgouget%40free.fr) does not exist. So I tried my other email address and got the same message. So at this point I see two possibilities: * I don't have an account on the AppDb. Why did I receive an email saying my AppDb account was inactive then? * Or there is a bug in the 'Email a New Password' functionality. Maybe it's the '%40' causing the problem? I'd like to make another observation regarding the file selection dialog. If I mount my CDROM drive and add a link to /dosdevices/, Wine's regedit.exe hangs in the file open dialog. I can do "ls /mnt/cdrom" in an xterm with no problems at all. So my first thought is that the CDROM has a bad block, and that it happens to be inside one of the .exe files in the root of the CD, exactly where it has it's icon resource. I did a "cp /mnt/cdrom/* /root" which revealed that autorun.inf has bad blocks. Not a big problem so far. How to fix the permission stuff.

Advice please. This looks a little too big to be done without discussion. This stems from Michael Ost's CreateFile issue and is much more fundamental than the SHARE settings. Consider. ...CreateFile (.... FILE_READ_DATA...) ...ReadFile (...) That is sensible and perfectly legal under Windows but fails under Wine due to an inadequate handling of the generic vs specific permissions. It seems to me that the fix to this minor problem includes: a. Extending the server's Object concept (or at least the ops structure) to include the relevant GENERIC_MAPPING definition for the object. b. Extend the testing in handle.c so that the test of access takes into account the fact that the granted permissions might be generic whilst the requested is specific, and vice versa. This requires a in order to know how to do the conversion. c. Fix up calls to be a little more sensible in their requests. For example ReadFile does not need GENERIC_READ; it only needs FILE_READ_DATA. Alternatively we could specify that the access settings held for a handle in the server are only specific and the appropriate object's code is responsible for converting from generic to specific. Lotus Notes 6.51 on Wine 20050930 - Got it working

Here are a couple of notes on making Lotus Notes 6.51 work on Wine 20050930 The previous version of Wine that worked properly was 20050725. I upgraded to Wine 20050930 and restarted Notes. Notes crashed and complained about usp10 missing some entry points I ran wineprefixcreate (Note that you cannot go back to Wine 20050725 after you do this, so back up you .wine tree before running this) Ran winecfg and set usp10 to Windows Only Restarted Notes Notes seemed to work until I tried to save an attachment, then it crashed Triaged the crash to a change on 8/15/2005 at 9:51CDT. The patch at this time, changes the default version from WIN98 to NT2K Ran winecfg and set the default version to Win98 Restated Notes and the application works and saving attachments works Triaging the version change was a lot of work to find out that I just needed to change the default version. Took me nearly a day to find it. If I switch back the version to default, the crash happens everytime. I believe a file selection dialog is being loaded and there is a problem with that dialog in NT2K mode and it causes a crash. The other thing that is odd is that the layout of the screen between WIN98 mode and NT2k mode is slightly different in 20050930, mainly on the widget that lists the messages. Help translating Japanese error message in installer

There is a Japanese RPG I am trying to install, which I downloaded from: http://www.i-o.jp/game/mizukake/mizukake_trial.zip This installer runs fine under Windows 98, but fails in Wine. I believe this to be some kind of trivial error, but I cannot read Japanese, so I am unable to diagnose what is going wrong with this installer. A screenshot of the error message is attached. What is --extension in win32.api?

In a number of places in win32.api I see '--extension' is used. For instance for 'advapi32.dll' we have: %long --extension LSA_HANDLE '--extension' is also used for pointer types in other places. However, when I check winapi.pm I see that '--extension' is not used anywhere ($extension is set but never used). So what is it for? headless question, and IPC question

I'm using wine to access a particular proprietary DLL (I don't have the source for it) on Linux. The way I'm doing this is to write an EXE that wraps the DLL, and makes all of the functions available via socket request and response messages. My linux program has access to the functions of the DLL by sending socket messages to the EXE running under wine. 2 questions: 1. My DLL/EXE uses no calls to pop up graphical windows, so theoretically no display is needed. Of course wine needs a display because it does not know that an EXE won't make such calls. Is there a way to run wine with a null or dummy display - so that it is effectively running headless? 2. The sockets trick was the simplest way I could figure out how to do IPC between a linux process and a wine process. However, is there are any better or faster way to do this? As far as I know I can't use winelib because I don't have the source to the DLL. Thanks, Ken Larson

Paths confusion

Hello Wine Folks, Thanks to google, I learnt about Wine's existence. I havent tried it yet, looking through the website, documentation and source code, I am delighted! I am browsing through some DLL implementation source one by one, but I got stuck at the first one itself(kernel32/files) and got confused with various file path formats. Following are some of the path names I could collect reading through different documentation and I also got a few from my friends who are windows developers. To list my confusion, I have a few questions reading the source: 1. Do UNC paths really start with "UNC\"? I havent seen any, I thought they start with just "\\share\" 2. Does "\\?\" denote a UNC path that refers to the local machine? 3. Wine's RtlDetermineDosPathNameType_U says //./foo is a device path, what does this translate to this path is given to NtCreateFile? 4. Wine's NtCreateFile seems to specially handle only PIPEs and MAILSLOTs. How does it handle the other types that I listed below? (\Device\..., \??\Volume, :{...}, etc 5. How do you determine from the NT path if it is a path to a device? Stop-ship 0.9 problem

There is a serious problem with Wine 0.9 as-is, namely that we now respect Windows antialiasing settings. If you have a patented bytecode hinter enabled FreeType, things look OK: http://plan99.net/~mike/files/hinted-fonts.jpg but if you don't (like 99% of Linux users): http://www.republika.pl/belegdol/temp/wine.png Needless to say we can't ship 0.9 when it'll look like that for most users. The attached patch fixes the issue by providing an override for antialiasing. FreeType AA makes the fonts look good again at small sizes. It also changes the logic on one line - I may be mistaken but it looked wrong to my eye: - if(!get_gasp_flags(physDev, &flags) || flags & GASP_DOGRAY) + if(get_gasp_flags(physDev, &flags) && (flags & GASP_DOGRAY)) We can patch this variable in Crossover (where CW ship a licensed freetype copy) so the correct AA settings are used which (a) looks nicer and (b) makes font metrics correct. Trouble compiling tests standalone with cl

While looking at http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1899 I noticed that dlls/msvcrt/tests/file.c didn't test O_APPEND, so I thought I'd try building that test standalone, running it under Windows, and adding the missing test logic. (Rather than building under Windows, I used a shell script that invokes cl.exe -- see http://kegel.com/wine/cl-howto.html -- but that shouldn't matter here. Just to be clear about what version of cl I'm using, cl -? shows: Microsoft (R) 32-bit C/C++ Optimizing Compiler Version 13.10.3077 for 80x86 Copyright (C) Microsoft Corporation 1984-2002. All rights reserved I also have the Platform SDK installed, so I have MS's headers, e.g. /home/dank/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/MicrosoftSDK/include/WinNT.h and my INCLUDE environment variable is set to C:\Program Files\msvc2003\include;C:\Program Files\MicrosoftSDK\include This used to work fine.) OK, I can live with one extra define, I guess, so I tried cl -DSTANDALONE -D_X86_ -D__i386__ -I../../../include file.c But that fails with the errors ../../../include\winnt.h(1680) : error C2054: expected '(' to follow 'inline' ../../../include\winnt.h(1681) : error C2085: 'NtCurrentTeb' : not in formal parameter list ... ../../../include\winbase.h(2271) : error C2054: expected '(' to follow 'inline' Evidently cl doesn't like the inline functions in winnt.h and winbase.h. Any suggestions? It seems a bit strange to be using wine's winnt.h when I have MS's headers, but I haven't tracked that down yet. Should Wine's headers build with cl? Thanks, Dan
