excessive stack space usage in NTDLL

Hi, The stackspace usage in dlls/ntdll/directory.c is affecting programs. One installer crashes because of it I suspect. objdump -d directory.o|grep "sub.*[0-9a-f][0-9a-f][0-9a-f],%esp" wine_nt_to_unix_file_name - 0x5f0 (1520 byte) (in this my sample program crashes) append_entry - 0x2cc (716 byte) NtQueryDirectoryFile - 0x22d4 (8916 byte!) problematic also cdrom.o DVD_ReadKey - 0x84c CDROM_DeviceIoControl - 0x40c thread.o start_thread - 0x830 nt.o NtQuerySystemInformation - 0x990 How best to reduce? Single sign-on SoC project summary

Hi folks, Dimi asked me to give a little status about the single sing-on summer of code project I was doing to the list, and I'm happy to oblige. Applications running on win32 can use the Security Support Provider Interface (SSPI) to handle authentication via a number of protocols, like kerberos, NTLM, Negotiate and Schannel. My project was to implement the NTLM and Negotiate protocols, using Andrew Bartlett's GENSEC implementation from samba4. Samba offers a command line tool to provide NTLM ( and, in samba 4, Negotiate ) style authentication for other programs, so my task was to get wine to use ntlm_auth. Things that got done: --------------------- * Base64 codec ntlm_auth was first designed as a helper for squid. Squid talks to it's helpers using base64, wine just had an encoder for it. * Code to run ntlm_auth ntlm_auth doesn't store all the state information needed for the protocol handshake, so some wrapping code was needed. * Code that implements the security support providers for NTLM and Negotiate. To make the sspi functions behave properly, the api functions have to do the right thing. Work still left to do: ---------------------- * Getting the code into cvs: While most of the code was already submitted to the wine-patches list, a lot of it was still in need of improvements. I'm currently working on this. * Getting more of the stubs to actually do something While the code that exists so far can handle the basic NTLM and Negotiate authentication, a lot of functions defined in the API still are stubs. Conclusion: ----------- As soon as the code is in cvs, wine should be able to do basic NTLM and Negotiate authentication, server and client side. Client side just requires ntlm_auth, server side also requires samba to be set up correctly, and when using samba 3, access to the winbindd named pipe for the user running wine. Real use of this code seems limited, as most use cases also use the schannel protocol, which isn't implmented yet. Juan Lang is working on this, but needs to get more of crypt32 implemented for that. I will continue to work on this, there's still a lot of providers to go. I would like to use this summary to extend my thanks to Google and Chris DiBona for getting the whole Summer of Code set up. Also, I'd like to thank you guys, particularly Juan, for the help I have recieved so far. It's really fun to work with the project, I hope to keep doing so for a while. I did regression testing and found patch Id=19048 triggers this error wine-pthread: run.c:142: ME_RunOfsFromCharOfs: Assertion `nCharOfs >= nParaOfs' failed. filed http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3239 The application is a free download and the bug has steps to generate the failure. It is still a problem with cvs from 20050909. Paul

Using Winamp with out_ds.dll (DirectSound), it seems that sounds also start scratching endlessly after doing a couple of "Play/Pause" cycles here. Also noticeable while doing play/pause is that Wine's DirectSound is not going a very good job, perhaps with mixing, I'm not sure. When starting playback, it does one of several things, but only at the start of playing: - Leaves out samples - "supersamples" (?) stuff, eg. sound volume doubles - Decrease (half?) sound volume Output with out_wave.dll seems to suffer some of the same problems, albeit they are harder to reproduce: When starting a sound, a miniscule 'scratch' sound or slightly loudened volume might be heard for a split second, but almost always go away instantly and so is almost inaudible. Some times, though, it *does* output overlapping sound samples for a prolonged period of time, just like DirectSound does all the time (when/because of some odd fading technique ?). What it _doesn't_ have is the eternal scratching noise that Wine DirectSound has, which is of course a relief :-). The audible hiss in DirectSound seems to be http://bugs.winehq.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2211. Can't find any mention of the DirectSound mixing (?) problems, neither of the WaveOut ones (albeit they are less of an issue).

Bug Triage: Get Games working

Bug 717, status NEW. http://bugs.winehq.com/show_bug.cgi?id=717 "StarCraft installer can't create icons." This bug seems fixed in CVS HEAD, the StarCraft installer now creates icons just fine. In addition, the game can now switch to fullscreen mode, which leads to the mouse cursor not "running invisibly out of the game area", so to speak. Kudos! Please close the bug. What doesn't work: Sound. I've got kernel 2.6 with 1000Hz timing fidelity on a 2+GHz machine, and there is an awful scratching noise in every sample. That goes for both the Starcraft music (played off the CD) and the sound effects. The fullscreen video displays without any hickups, and the problem occurs even when the game is idle. So it's definitely not a CPU problem but a bug in Wine's DirectX audio implementation. In addition to the scratching noises, all sound effects are cut off (faded, it even sounds like ??) prematurely. It's not a lot, but it's definitely audible that all sound effects are chopped in the end, so to speak. What's untested: Multiplayer modes. 9 years since the game has been released, and we're almost there. Kudos! Hehe ;-)

FYI: winedbg testing

For those of you who might be interested, I wrote a test harness for winedbg It still doesn't cover all of the commands of winedbg, but it's very good starting point for catching some errors (and regressions). Basic features are tested (starting winedbg, step & cont, break points & watch points, global and local var access, expression & types handling) Unfortunately, it's not ready yet for CVS inclusion. Anyway, if some of you want to do some real winedbg hacking, get back to me, we'll see how to share it in the most appropriate way. In the details, the harness is made of: 1/ an extension of regular wine's test harness: it just allows the test program to control a child through the command line (input & output) 2/ a program to behave as a debuggee 3/ the testing tool itself (a regular wine test app, based on component 1/), which launches winedbg on 2/ and sends commands to winedbg and checks the results The reasons why this can't be included yet in cvs are: - we need to recompile 2/ in order to make the test to take place (or at least to have its binary image). Actually, to do a full testing, we should have binaries images of 2/ compiled by different compilers (winelib app with gcc & stabs, EXE with mingw & stabs, EXE with msvc & PDB...) so that we can also stress the dbghelp's support for the various debugging formats (stabs, PDB...) - I ran the harness both on Wine and Windows (with native dbghelp) (that's the good news), but there are some critic discrepencies, like first like number of a function being different (is it on first open brace or on first instruction ?), so the test is still not simply portable For the rest of the story, while running the test on Windows & native dbghelp, lots of misimplementation of builtin dbghelp (and therefore winedbg) appeared. I did fix lots of them, and I'll submit them from now on. The set of patch I've just sent to wine-patches are what is required to make the winedbg test pass on Wine, get ready now for the rest of the patches to make dbghelp (and winedbg) in sync with native dbghelp A+ -- Eric Pouech

Kid Pix Deluxe 3 redux

Four years ago, I tested Kid Pix Deluxe 3 on wine: http://www.winehq.org/hypermail/wine-users/2001/08/0287.html http://www.winehq.org/hypermail/wine-devel/2001/08/0096.html Couldn't even install it. Now that Wine's approaching 0.9, I figured it was time to try again. So I found the old disc, dusted it off, and gave it a shot. What a difference four years makes - it installs now! Oh, there were three bugs in the installer: (see http://bugs.winehq.org, bugs 3448, 3449, 3451) but nothing a determined user can't work around. This was particularly impressive, since the Kid Pix installer installs several other packages, including Quicktime. Sadly, the resulting app fails to start. That's bug 3450: KPD3.exe aborts while loading, with message err:module:import_dll Library CONFIGIT.dll ... not found Presumably that library was supposed to be installed by the installer, but wasn't. While Kid Pix Deluxe 3 isn't free software, it's pretty cheap; you can get it for $2 online. But lots of schools probably still use copies of this app, and it makes a nice test, so it seems worth working on. (There's also a version of Kid Pix specialized for schools; that's different somehow, but I bet getting the retail version working will make it a lot more likely the school version will work.) - Dan -- Trying to get a job as a c++ developer? Small CVS-Update-Script

This is nothing special but may be useful for some people out there having problems updating their cvs-trees or being lazy writing some commands in their console. Copy the 'getwinecvs' to /usr/src or wherever you want (don't forget to edit the SRC=Variable if you're doing so) and chmod it to give you x-rights. (e.g.: 'chmod 750 getwinecvs' without quotes) By running it, it will search for an existing wine-tree... if there is one, it will be cleaned and then updated; if not, the complete tree will be downloaded. When using -c as parameter for getwinecvs, it will automatically begin to compile after getting all the updates and then install. To see what it exactly does, have a look at the source. Even if it is called General CVS-Updater by gladiac it has been written FOR wine. I hope it is helpful for others. I know it's not very nerdy but.... who cares ;).

undocumented APIs

Hello, I would like to make a general appeal to not write wine code based on the docs at undocumented.ntinternals.net, because they're often misleading, incomplete or simply wrong, and do more harm than good. Please refer to "windows nt/2000 native api reference" by Gray Nebbett, to the reactos team, or to me (I've got the book) instead, and always write tests for undocumented functions. Ivan.

cannot run a lot of 16 bit apps

Hi, i'm trying out some apps from the bugzilla database, but in quite some cases i get this error: winevdm: unable to exec 'winbr34.exe': 16-bit support missing I compiled from current cvs without any options, i even tried --enable-win16 but didn't help. Appearently other people _are_ able to run these apps. One example is ftp://ftp.mvpsoft.com/pub/winbr34.exe Anyone could give me a hint how to solve this?
