> If we need to extend it later using code from FreeDCE may be > possible, but right now we : > a) Don't know of *any* pure DCE-RPC applications people want to run you _are_ aware that REGEDT32, USRMGR.EXE, SRVMGR.EXE and most of the NT 4.0 Control Panel components are actually DCE/RPC programs? see, your point is _exactly_ the problem ! there aren't any dce-rpc applications in a strict interpretation of what you say, because dce-rpc is middleware: it's a communicator, an intermediary, and it absolutely xxxx-all use on its own [imagine trying to sell ONC/RPC's portmap as a stand-alone application] and there is another less-strict and more subtle interpretation of your statement. when people run mozilla, they know it, they see it, it's in-their-face. when they run a win32 program, they know it, they see it, it "happens". that DCE-RPC is "middleware" of the highest order (and as such is completely invisible) is _exactly_ the problem: people do not even _know_ it's there! so you and everyone in the free software community can be forgiven for not being aware of any dce-rpc applications that people want to run. like i said in my advogato article 817, dce-rpc is like the Boss 13L V10 engine that Ford put in their 1994 Ford Mustang Cobra "Concept Car": it's capable of producing wheel-spin in 4th gear all the way up to 110mph (i've seen the video!!!) ... yet an engine is xxxx-all use without a car. ... would you build a car with the engine integrated into the chassis?? no, of course not, because you would have seen enough examples of cars to know that that would produce a nightmare design and maintenance headache. ... if you were _given_ a suitable engine for free, would you look at ways of finding engine-mounts and gearbox adaptors? i realise that the answer to _that_ depends on how far down the road you had got in building your kit car.... so, to recap the analogy: * FreeDCE is the engine * DCOM is the after-market supercharger or Turbocharger, exhaust, mod chip, disk brakes and alloy wheels, and the Pi Research Telemetry equipment, all of which makes it essential for you to qualify for - and win - certain kinds of races. * NTLMSSP and "Named Pipes" are the gearbox. * Win32 applications are the chassis * The Win32 GUI is the steering wheel, seat and pedals. ... unless it was electric, you wouldn't build a car without those components, would you? l. -- -- <a href="http://lkcl.net">http://lkcl.net</a> --

Several of its declarations conflict with those in npapi.h, so it's potentially problematic. If it's not part of the PSDK, winelib users shouldn't need it to compile, or should expect to have to install the DDK if they need the prototypes, yes? If you think it's a better approach I can rename all the conflicting types, and document why the typenames don't match the expected ones. tests

I've run tests twice, once with winrash and once manually, on windows nt 4.0 The results are here http://test.winehq.com/data/200501131000/#NT%204 interestingly some tests that fail or timeout when run from winrash, work when run manually. Is there a way this could be fixed, or should we at least somehow mark tests that give different results when run with winrash or manually? Ivan.

Which QueryInterface is called?

(Mike? Robert?,) I am trying to understand what is failing in a piece of -out-of-process COM under Wine. Basically it is an ATL-based CreateInstance that is returning E_NOINTERFACE under Wine. Below is a cut-down copy of the trace. What I don't understand is which QueryInterface is being called. I don't totally understand what is going on in the marshalling etc. but from what I can see I expected to see ClientIdentity_QueryRef called and some sort of marshalling going on in the last stages. [AppDB] new screenshot and image classes

Hi Chris, What I wanted to tell you on the channel was to discard the patch named: [AppDb] screenshot and image class Because we discussed it with Paul and I was able to make a new one using his image class code and I used these classes everywhere on the code. The new screenshot code is much better. We'll have to make a script to go trough every old screenshot and create the thumbnails. Before I do the script, please check if the watermarking is nice enough or if we want another logo. Debugging mingw applications using wine

I'm trying to debug a windows .exe built with mingw using wine, but winedbg seems to have problems reading stabs from the mingw-built binary. My goal is to be able to debug a cross-compiled, native Java (GCJ) application, but even a simple C "hello world" seems to cause problems. Running dxdiag

Hi, I was trying to run dxdiag (just for the fun of it). Dxdiag complains that it cannot find any dll. This is correct because what it does is check the directories in the "Path". The dll's are of course not present on a clean install as all are builtin. Loading a dll takes care of this by checking the DllOverrides and acts according to that if it cannot find the dll. How can we act on an app which checks for a 'physical' presence of a dll? For now I did 'ln -s /usr/local/lib/wine/ddraw.dll.so ddraw.dll' to get around this. This is of course not very flexible. Any ideas? Or will any solution yield in a performance drop as we have to do some extra checks? Paul.

Exiting a tests on the first failure

Hi, I'm currently looking into the shreg test of shlwapi. In the error-logs on test.winehq.org I see a lot of errors. If the first CreateKey fails, there is no need to continue with the testing (because the rest of the tests will fail as well). Hi Con, One thought that occurred to me, and this is just a random theory, is that maybe the issue is not with the Wine code but the Win32 code run on top of it. Do you know how 2.6 scheduling compares with 2.4 and Windows (NT) scheduling? Could it be that some apps are written to expect Windows-style scheduling and fail to work if they don't get it? In case you hadn't noticed, I'm afraid I only have first-year CS knowledge of scheduling :/ thanks -mike

Pirates! under wine

Hi, I've been working on DirectX 9 over the past week and have managed to get Sid Meier's Pirates! http://www.atari.com/pirates/pirates/index.php working better than it does for me under cedega (see screenshot attached) along with quite a few demos using Directx 9. There's still quite a lot of work to do to get a full Directx 9 implementation but it shouldn't take too long to get Directx 9 in wine as functional as DirectX under cedega. I'm just doing a bit of housekeeping so the patches will be ready for next week along with a list of what's working and what's not. ___________________________________________________________ ALL-NEW Yahoo! Q HeapAlloc.

Hi, I been having a problem where HeapAlloc is failing even though there's plenty of virtual memory left I've done a bit of digging but haven't been able to get to the bottom of it. First of all I've checked that HeapAlloc will go into swap by allocating a lot of 64meg blocks and writing to them to force linux to allocate them properly, and it works fine. Then I changed alloc.c so that CreateSubHeap writes the status returned by NtAllocateVirtualMemory and I get C00017 STATUS_NO_MEMORY. HEAP_CreateSubHeap Could not allocate 00410000 bytes reason: C00017 [STATUS_NO_MEMORY] an I double checked this by putting a malloc in just after the failure, which failed. So then I wrote a a small non-wine test program run as a seperate process to allocate ten times as much ram and ran it while just after the crash (while the debug box was still up) and it works fine. Any ideas? Here is a script that will recreate missing thumbnails and apply the watermarking. Please configure the script by modifying the first lines and don't forget to create the thumbnail directories. Other than that everything should be fine. Usage: 1)chmod u+x ./thumbs.php 2)edit clean.php to set up the database connection and other settings (first lines) 3)./thumbs.php

dear wine developers, you may have noticed that DCE 1.2.2 was released on the 12th january 2005 under an LGPL license. as you are no doubt aware, the significance of DCE/RPC is very, very high. in particular, with FreeDCE using an NTLMSSP authentication plugin and a "Named Pipes" transport in samba or samba tng, it becomes possible for FreeDCE to be utilised to make DCOM applications work under Wine. DCOM applications can be made to WORK under Wine using FreeDCE, Samba or Samba TNG with NamedPipes. unmodified Win32 applications can do DCE/RPC and DCOM utilising FreeDCE and Samba, with a minimum of development effort inside Wine and Samba. also, FreeDCE can be leveraged to provide _proper_ implementations of the underlying Win32 interfaces. for example, REGEDT32.EXE can be made to work over a network running _natively_ under Wine. NetUserGetInfo can return "meaningful" information. NetShareEnum likewise. nv driver causes Xrender bug to be misdetected

Hi, Using the so-called 'open source' nv driver that ships with Xorg causes Wine at least on my hardware to misdetect libXrender as being buggy. This disables clientside font rendering and also causes the entire screen to go black whenever a Wine application has focus. Just letting people know in case they see similar symptoms. I normally run with the binary nvidia driver which doesn't have the same problem, so I'll not be debugging this anytime soon. thanks -mike
