Some time ago somebody asked here about RedHat 7.3 Wine packages. I said I'd do it, pending some hardware upgrade on one of my box. That time has now come, and they are available on the sf.net download page. Only i386 and src for now, no athlon nor i686. Vincent

OK - wrote a little test program to see, how SetShellWindow() exactly works on Windows. It creates a few windows and tests, what happens when trying to register them as shell window. To run it you have to terminate Windows Explorer at first. Then the output is this the following: first call to SetShellWindow(hwnd): SUCCESS second call to SetShellWindow(hwnd): FAILURE reset shell window by SetShellWindow(0): FAILURE third call to SetShellWindow(hwnd): FAILURE SetWindowExStyle(hwnd, WS_EX_TOPMOST): FAILURE DestroyWindow(hwnd): SUCCESS SetShellWindow(hwnd2) with WS_EX_TOPMOST: FAILURE SetShellWindow(hwnd3): SUCCESS SetWindowPos(hwnd3, HWND_TOPMOST): SUCCESS SetWindowPos(hwnd3, hwnd4: SUCCESS SetShellWindow(hwnd4): FAILURE SetWindowPos(hwnd3, hwnd5): SUCCESS So we have to taking following rules into account for the SetShellWindow/Ex() implementation: - SetShellWindow() only succeedes if there is not yet a registered shell window. - A successfull call moves the window into the background. It becomes the window with the lowest Z-order. This can't be changed by a call to SetWindowPos() or similar functions. The shell window remains at the bottom for ever. - Shell windows can't be reset by calling SetShellWindow(0). To change the shell window, the current window has to be destroyed. - Shell windows must not have the extended style bit WS_EX_TOPMOST set. It it is set, SetShellWindow() failes. If you try to set this bit after registering a window as shell window, the bit is ignored and automatically set to zero. - If you try to move the window into the foreground by calling SetWindowPos() with HWND_TOPMOST this call succeedes, but it does not change anything. I don't think winesetup needs big changes; I'm still not sure about what is broken. The attached file updates the registry shipped with winesetuptk to the current winedefault.reg, and also updates the dlls that are created when making a fake windows installation. As I've said, I'm not sure of what is broken, but if what has to go isn't determined by winesetuptk while running (Like the AppDefaults) then it's just a question of removing whatever has to go from the cfg_wine_without_windows.ini and/or cfg_wine_with_windows.ini. If anything else has to be changed, then Vincent should tell Alex what exactly has to change, so Alex can get on with it. This is presumably the quickest way of getting a working winesetuptk again, as he know Tcl/Tk very well. It's not worth wasting too much time on it, as were going to trash it soon, it doesn't matter if it can't tweak all aspects of the config file, it just has to make a working configuration for the user, that will often have to tweak the file by hand anyway until winecfg is ready.

CVS issues

I updated CVS on 10/8 and Lotus notes worked fine. I updated on 10/12 and now Notes gives me a Date not initialized error and all the date and times in the program are all mangled. I am rolling back to 10/8 Kevin

Most normal people (Users) don't want to edit config files or use a shell. That's why most people don't use linux. Winecfg isn't complete, winesetuptk will go soon, but in the mean time it's the best way to configure wine. I get emails all the time from people thanking me for putting winesetuptk on sourceforge, it's had a lot of downloads, and I don't think we can remove it yet. As soon as winecfg is ready, I'll hide winesetuptk (That won't work anyway because wine won't read the config file). Until then, winesetuptk is the only easy way of configuring wine, and I have no intention of telling users "Go and edit the config file and add this and remove that and make a system directory inside the windows directory that's in your fake c:\ drive that the config file has to point to..." when I can just say "Install winesetuptk, start it, and follow the on-screen instructions". I don't see how such a good level of usability can hurt.

Winealsa: now fixed, interactive tests still ko.

Applying this patch fixes alsa : [repaired] dlls/winmm/winealsa/audio.c thanks to Daniel (Tom?) and Jerry. Now "Common" tests are ok. But some interactive tests still fail with winealsa. I attached the log. Problems building mshtml.dll and msi.dll on mingw.

Some time ago (about 2 years ago now), Codeweavers developped winesetuptk, a configuration tool for Wine. It is now listed with other Wine related files on sf.net. The problem is that the tool hasn't really followed Wine development (for example, removal of $VAR-style variables from config file), and some users experience problems because of that. It'd be better to not list it on our download page because of its staleness. OTOH, I know that Mike et al.'s winecfg is not ready yet for prime-time use. Still, having a working, commented text config file to work with rather than an obsolete GUI tool is preferable IMHO. So I'd recommend the removal (or hiding) of it if nobody steps up to update it to current Wine practices. Vincent

Hi all, Some games that worked pretty well in Wine (like, for example, Tomb Raider 3) are now failing with latest CVS due to : Unhandled exception: privileged instruction in 32-bit code (0x0048e2e1). He came home right away and they drove together to the boys school and picked him up. Little did they suspect that where the money came from was more shocking than actually finding it in the closet. As it turns out, the boy had been sending out, via E-mail, a type of "EBOOK" to E-mail addresses that he obtained off the Internet. Everyday after school for the past 2 months, he had been doing this right on his computer in his bedroom. "I just got the E-mail one day and I figured what the heck, I put my name on it like the instructions said and I started sending it out", says the clever 15-year-old. The E-mail letter listed 5 addresses and contained instructions to send one $5 dollar bill to each person on the list, then delete the address at the top and move the others addresses down, and finally to add your name to the top of the list. The letter goes on to state that you would receive several thousand dollars in five-dollar bills within 2 weeks if you sent out the letter with your name at the top of the 5-address list. "I get junk E-mail all the time,and really did not think it was going to work", the boy continues. Within the first few days of sending out the E-mail, the Post Office Box that his parents had gotten himfor his video-game magazine subscriptions began to fill up with not magazines, but envelopes containing $5 bills. "About a week later I rode [my bike] down to the post office and my box had 1 book and about 300 envelops stuffed in it. There was also a yellow slip that said I had to go up to the [post office] counter. I thought I was in trouble or something (laughs)". He goes on, "I went up to the counter and they had a whole box of more mail for me. I had to ride back home and empty out my backpack because I could not carry it all". Over the next few weeks, the boy continued sending out the E-mail. "The money just kept coming in and Ijust kept sorting it and stashing it in the closet, barely had time for my homework". He had also been riding his bike to several of the banks in his area and exchanging the $5 bills for twenties, fifties and hundreds. "I didn't want the banks to get suspicious so I kept riding to different banks with like five thousand at a time in my backpack. I would usually tell the lady at the bank counter that my dad had sent me in to exchange the money and he was outside waiting for me. One time the lady gave me a really strange look andtold me that she would not be able to do it for me and my dad would have to come in and do it, but I just rode to the next bank down the street (laughs)." Surprisingly, the boy did not have any reason to be afraid.
