Hi, Here's how to get Warcraft 3 running under wine: 1. Use the latest wine cvs. Only that will work. 2. Mount the CD, and run install.exe on the CD with the winver set to win98 under config. (even though 95/98 are exactly the same when playing the game--i hate that) You should disable the ide-scsi thing because it seems to cause problems =( 3. Close the install program. Go to the directory where war3 is installed. mv the Movies folder to Movies backup. The game tries to display a movie clip on start in the retail, and it hangs wine =( 4. Download the NoCD patch for Warcraft 3 v1.00 (I don't know if 1.01 is out yet) at www.gamecopyworld.com. mv war3.exe and worldedit.exe to backup names. Copy in the patched program exe's. You may now run War3 if you wish. Warcraft 3 uses Safedisc v2. With this patch it will bypass it. Run war3 with the command "wine war3.exe -- -opengl". 5. To login battle.net, you need to bypass the exe check. With the patched version of the game, it won't work. So what I did to get it to work is moved the patched exe's to something like "war3_patched.exe" and create a symbolic link "war3.exe" that links to it. Start the game "war3.exe". To login to battle.net, open bash console. Change to the war3 directory, and reset the symbolic link to the original war3 exe, let it sleep 5 seconds, and then reset the symbolic link back to the patched version. While it's sleeping, you need to login into battle.net immediately. This is what I did to get D2 battle.net to work under wine. It should work for war3. You need to be the same version as battle.net for it to work though. (currently only 1.00 is availible for linux, and battle.net is 1.01) 6. To patch the game, you need to get the standalone patches. Set your symbolic link to the real exe's, and patch away =) The beta in contrast worked perfectly. The retail has a couple problems =(. The advantages I find running War3 under linux/wine/opengl, are higher framerates than on both real windows, and winex. And no graphics errors in comparison to winex d3d8, and no sound problems like under real windows. My three button mouse also works unlike windows. All these advantages =) Jesse

I would be willing to do that myself for other dlls if those responsible for them ask nicely. :-) This reminds me that a self-registerable dll is supposed to have a VS_VERSION_INFO resource, with an empty "OLESelfRegister" value in the "StringFileInfo" block. comcat.dll has no resources; is there a standard Wine way to add such version info?

libwine problem when calling GetModuleHandle(null) from C# on linux

I sent this post to comp.emulators.ms-windows.wine, but I'm hoping it's appropriate to send it to this list as well. My humble apologies if not. I have this very simple C# program compiled on linux using the lates mono (http://www.go-mono.com): ------- using System; using System.Runtime.InteropServices; class Win32Methods{ [DllImport("kernel32.dll")] public extern static IntPtr GetModuleHandleW(string lpModuleName); } class Class1 { [STAThread] static void Main(string[] args) { Console.WriteLine("GetModuleHandle(null): {0}", Win32Methods.GetModuleHandleW(null)); } } ------ When I run this on Windows (.NET) it prints out the module-handle. If I run it on linux using mono, I get: ------ err:heap:HEAP_GetPtr Invalid heap 00000000! GetModuleHandle(null): 0 ------ I have seen some old post suggesting that this error is due to opengl-build-problems, but i'm able to run notepad (the wine-version), which I assume call kernel32.GetModuleHandle as well. WineVersions tested: - wine-cvs-unstripped-071702-1.i386.rpm downloaded from http://wine.dataparty.no today - libwine version included on Mandrake 8.2. (Download Edition) I hope someone can help me with this, as I'm trying to use Wine to port the basics of the (Microsoft) System.Windows.Forms namespace in .NET to linux. Best Regards Steinar Herland

Possible Fix?

I installed Dynomite for Windows (from PopCap) into a Wine-only installation and noticed that as I moved the window, the images and sprites were offset by the corresponding amount. I added a return statement into the following file (updated from CVS as of today) and the problem went away almost completely. On occasion repainting still can be problematic but overall things work much better. windows/winpos.c, in function WINPOS_GetWinOffset() I simply returned immediately following the line which sets the X and Y offsets to 0. Now I suspect that the rest of the code is rather necessary in some instances but in this particular case it is getting in the road. Any comments? Anthony

Virtual Pages difference - Spotted with VirtualQuery()

As usual, AutoCAD seems to be a good test-bench for wine :-) I spotted the problem that seemed coming from VirtualQuety function, but that is (I guess... hmmmm) more a problem of memory handling in wine. I think wine should set Protect flag quite as like as possible as windoze For AutoCAD2000 I put a dirty hack in process.c, but is really ugly; i'd prefer not to put my hands (bytes ?) too deeply inside some code that I don't understand completely... VirtualQuery problem... maybe

After 2 weeks debugging between window$ and wine (sigh), I found a different behaviour of VirtualQuery function : The app queries info about some pages in its code (really dunno why....); in PROTECT field of BASIC_MEMORY_INFO, windows returns a 0x20 value (EXECUTE_READ), but wine returns 0x08 (WRITE_COPY), causing app to hang. I guess there's an error somewhere, as the required info belongs to executable code, so at least should be active some EXECUTE flag; btw, my app checks only that the page has not active NO_ACCESS, WRITECOPY and PAGE_GUARD flags, and behaves badly if find one of them. As a check, I only add an *protect = *protect & 0xffff7fff to GetWin32Prot code, taking so off the WRITECOPY flag only, and the app began starting. As I don't know about anything of linux memory protections (sigh), the question is : is there someone with wnough skllls that want to check it ? :-) Regards Max

fix for bug #24

Hello, at least the attached patch fixes the problem described in the summary of bug #24 (in the description there are some other problems described too. That's why i CC wine-devel to let one of the bugzilla guru's decide how to proceed with that bug report). ImageList_Remove when called to remove all images on an empty ImageList returns TRUE. Checked with the ControlSpy on Windows 98SE (MSDN wasn't helpfull in this case). In programs/winetest/wine.xs, there is a function alloc_thunk(). Currently, there is only an implementation for i386. I have created an implementation for sparc, but I can't figure out how to test it. Does anyone know how this function gets called, or if it is still used? I tried "wine winetest.exe.so tests/wine.pl" and that calls some of the other functions in wine.xs, but not alloc_thunk(). Any help would be appreciated. Alright, makes sense. Since I don't know what you mean by "all compilers," I added a configure test and I will make sure __sparc__ is used everywhere. In regards to the second point (@function vs. 2), something has been bugging me for a while... Why do the .spec.c files have so much assembly code in them? To me, it looks like most of it could be replaced with an array and some creative use of global variables. I'm willing to tackle the task of converting the .spec.c files to use as much C as possible, but I can only test it on sparc. OLE classes registration

While researching bug 853 I found out that OleLoadFromStream fails if the specified OLE class is not registered. Many our OLE classes are not registered. Just submitted a patch to register CLSID_StdFont class which fixes the bug. Should I also add the registry etries for all other OLE classes?
