This function is currently a stub - are there any major problems supporting it, i.e. supporting dynamic creation and deletion of DOS drives? Does Wine have a notion of Device paths that look like "\\Device\\Harddisk2\\Partition1" at all? Thinking about it, does something like this make sense at all in the Wine context? ntdll.dll vs. ntoskrnl.exe

Hi, What are the differences between "ntdll.dll" and "ntoskrnl.exe"? In Windows XP they exist both and they export similiar (although different) set of functions. Wine implements just "ntdll.dll". Some W32 binary wants to import functions from "ntoskrnl.exe" from me, should I make an alias of Wine "ntdll.dll" to "ntoskrnl.exe" and try to fill the missing funcs? I have never seen W32 programming before as I am *IX coder. Thanks, Jan Kratochvil

Building WINE under Microsoft Services for UNIX

Hola, I wanted to start working on a port to SFU now that we are making progress on the Cygwin and Mingw port and am having a little trouble. SFU doesnt come with binutils and has a older gcc (2.7). I see UML made it into the 2.5.34 kernel http://user-mode-linux.sourceforge.net/ From what I get VxD drivers try to get hold of your pci bus and a ton of other stuff . Could this be the start to a fix down the road when it comes to .vxd support ? Will this help when it comes to a Wine Kernel Module ? cut from there site --- User-Mode Linux gives you a virtual machine that may have more hardware and software virtual resources than your actual, physical computer. Disk storage for the virtual machine is entirely contained inside a single file on your physical machine. You can assign your virtual machine only the hardware access you want it to have. My tests show that SetWindowLong(GWL_HWNDPARENT) call changes simultaneously both parent and owner for top level windows and returns old value (not sure old owner or parent it is). But top level windows created by Visual Vasic are special: they have no parent, but only owner according to Spy++. In my tests I can't reproduce it yet. A bit of investigation of Wine source revealed that some places use GetAncestor(hwnd, GA_PARENT), while others use GetParent(hwnd). Winemaker doesn't work in the latest CVS. When I run it, it tells me: Global symbol "$app_name" requires explicit package name at /usr/local/bin/winemaker line 1674. Execution of /usr/local/bin/winemaker aborted due to compilation errors. It worked as of Sept 10. -Steve

configure and then make distclean

Hi, For some strange reason (well, maybe not strange), I cannot run "make distclean" unless the make files are up to date. Is there a reason for this, or is this just a result of a check at the very begining of the makefile? It seems rather strange to me to do "./configure && make distclean; ./configure && make depend && make". Shachar P.S. No, I am not doing this every single time.

Shell icons - legal

Hello! I realy don't like icons which are currently in shell32.dll. I've created few replacement icons from there. They are much more simillar to win95,98 icons ... but not exactly the same. I want to confirm that my work will not be wasted. ---- Original icons from Windows shell32.dll can't be inserted in wine dll because of legal issues (design or something). ----- If I'm wrong let me know. WM_PAINT disappeared

Hi all I have a problem with my MFC-MDI-app. There are some other windows docked in the main window. The problem now is that they don't get painted. I end up with an app-window with some areas that never get updated. I first tried with tracing but I never saw anything wrong. Now I logged in my child window (CIXDockWnd) all messages it gets. This is what happens at creation in Windows: CMainFrame::OnCreate CIXDockWnd: -WM_NCCREATE -WM_NCCALCSIZE -WM_CREATE -WM_SIZE -WM_MOVE .. (some other stuff) -WM_WINDOWPOSCHANGING -WM_NCCALCSIZE -WM_WINDOWPOSCHANGED -WM_SIZE -WM_SHOWWINDOW CImdApp::InitInstance: Call ShowWindow CImdApp::InitInstance: Call UpdateWindow CIXDockWnd: -WM_PAINT (*) -WM_NCPAINT (*) CImdApp::InitInstance: Call SetFocus CIXAppFrame::OnWindowPosChanged CIXDockWnd: -WM_PAINT (*) -WM_NCPAINT (*) -WM_ERASEBKGND (*) IDLE_UPDATE Here the window is finished and visible, waiting for actions. In Wine though the paint messages of the child window (*) never show up, it stays clear. I don't know now if this is a problem in message routing (I don't think so as all other messages come through) or if these messages aren't sent at all. To investigate this can somebody point me to directions where these messages should be generated? Thanks bye Fabi

Tagging releases

Hi, Would it be possible to tag each "release" announced to wine-announce in the CVS, so cvs co -r WINE_20020702 wine will actually get the wine version that corresponds to that release? I know I can do "cvs co -D 2002-jul-02 wine" for similar effect, but I don't like that solution. It has not worked well for me, and it leaves some inclarities regarding files that had several commits on the same day (not to mention time zones etc.) Shachar

I suggest we always specify buffer length constants only *once*, namely at creation of the buffer. Not doing so can be potentially very harmful if we decide to change the buffer length and then manage to forget one or more length constants... I think there is issue with _T(x). I have this line in my Windows app that I'm compiling with WineLib (I'm using -fshort-wchar): const TCHAR *Name() const { return _T("my_name"); }; The compiler gives me an error of: cannot convert `const __wchar_t *' to `const TCHAR *' in return It similarly complains about converting _T("foo") to a const WCHAR *. Both of these things work under Windows. Are _tprintf and it's related functions (_ftprintf, _stprintf) implemented? I found a tchar.h in the source tree that defines these functions, but it wasn't in my /usr/local/include/wine directory. These functions aren't important for wine, since they're simply defined as the ASCII or Unicode version, but they are important for WineLib. What is the overall status of using Unicode with WineLib? What needs to be defined and what headers need to be included to get the functionality from Windows' tchar.h (_T(), TCHAR, the above functions, etc)? -Steve

PS. winapi_check automatically finds functions that are wrong so the Wine sourc eis currrently 100% correct (save bugs in winapi_check of course) as far as the issue above in documentation header is concerned.

This reduces the problem to the parsing of a function declaration. The rest is left as an exersize to the reader. :-) The problem is that this might work or it might not. Strange CVS problem (help!!!)

Folks, Up until a few days ago, I was able to do this: # vim some/wine/file.c # cvs diff some/wine/file.c > file.diff # mail wine-patches(a)winehq.com < file.diff # sleep <until Alexandre commited the patch> # cvs up At this point, CVS would figure out that the changes in file.c in my tree are the same as the ones on the server, will give a message to that effect, and update the file. As of lately, this no longer happens: I get a big fat conflic for all the changes I submit! This is *very* annoying. Anyone knows how to fix this behaviour? Alexandre, are you doing anything different? -- Dimi.

Work I'm not going to be able to motivate myself to do especially not if you want it in C. The last time years ago I did parsing and string handling in C was a horrible experience one I'm not eager to experience again, especially since other tools (read: Perl) exists. PS. I do agree it should be done in C though.

It easy to do that for reasonable functions but for ALL function is much harder. For example you have the special case of a function that returns a function pointer. Not even all C compilers gets that one right, so it normally done with a helping typedef...
