sandbox for regression tests

Hello everyone, I was considering writing a few regression tests for wine, and after reading Francois' presentation, I thought perhaps a File I/O would be a good one to implement (especially since he mentions CreeateFile). So I began thinking about how to go about it, which led me to the following... Has any thought been given to creating a sandbox for regression tests? For instance, let's look at creating a test for File I/O. This requires creating/deleting files/directries, the ability to locate files, etc. But I don't see anything in the framework that lets me do this portably on all systems. In wine, I can't gaurantee that the test directory (which I could probably write to) is mapped to a Windows drive. On all platformes, I don't see how I can write to an arbitrary location on C:, since it may be unwriteable, and even if it's not, people probably don't want extraneous wine stuff littered around their drive when something goes wrong. I'm now thinking I'll try something more straight-forward as my first attempt, but this type of test seems like it'd be very useful, and I don't see how to do it with today's infrastructure. Ideas? winver & managed question

Hello All, I have just been reading the docs on Wine and came across the --managed Allow the window manager to manage created windows --winver Version to imitate (win95,nt40,win31,nt2k,win98,nt351,win30,win20) Does the "--managed" allow my xserver to take care of the windows? Also, if I set "--winver nt2k" then does this mean that Wine will look for the specified directories in my /wine-c directory laid out the way that they actually are specified on a real Windows NT/2000 machine? That would be great if it did. Native Linux SO libraries

Hello All, I have recently read in the Wine Docs that native Linux .so libraries can be loaded by wine and I think that this is wonderful. It means to me, if I have read everything correctly, that I can communicate with my linux kernel from within the wine windows environment correct? Also, does some one have an example .so and also an example windows test driver program that I can use to see how this is done? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Yes, you see the problem and the limitations we currently have. The reason why this isn't 100% possible is because dll separation isn't complete. Have a look at the the internal Wineserver functions and the debugging code that the dlls depend on. This was discussed a little at wineconf. Patrik Stridvall is doing the MS_VC++ port of wine and I'm working on the mingw/cygwin port. Once wine can be built on these platforms it will be easier for us to find/fix WINEisms in the DLL's and work around/fix them. On platforms where we don't need a wineserver this is a bitch. I need to be able to build the wine dlls under mingw for ReactOS. ReactOS uses its own makefile/helper makefile system without GNU autoconf/automake. Rather then import the wine dlls as we have done in the past, hack on them for a while, then fight to merge changes back in, I want to do a clean port to cygwin/mingw that can upgraded independently of the rest of the ReactOS system. This helps us and this helps wine by giving wine another platform to work on and moving ReactOS along. ReactOS has a win32k.sys that provides the kernel mode portion of the NT-like win32 subsystem. What we are lacking on the ReactOS project is the user space side. The wine dlls provide this completion of the win32 subsystem. /* never mind that we don't have windowing working yet =P */ The way we have worked around the bugs in the wine dlls is that we have added support to our NTDLL.DLL for the debugging features of the wine portion of the Win32 subsystem. I don't know if this will work or not because well we don't have windowing working yet. Once DLL separation is complete, there should be nothing left in the DLL's other then the debugging stuff that will cause a issue with portability to any OS. Lotus-Notes redrawing

I got a problem using Lotus Ntes where the characters just aren't printed. ( I think it's bug 428) I tried to fix that and found in dlls/user/painting.c if (!hrgnUpdate) /* empty region, clip everything */ { hrgnUpdate = CreateRectRgn( 0, 0, 0, 0 ); } The easiest way for me to get my Notes up again was by changing this to my default-window size e.g. if (!hrgnUpdate) /* empty region, clip everything */ { hrgnUpdate = CreateRectRgn( 0, 0, 700, 700 ); } which is ok for me. So my question is, what is the "right way" to get the redraw working again ? Greets Martin

Preferred patch format

Hopefully sometime soon I'll start having sparc-solaris patches. Unfortunately I can't get at cvs through the firewall here, so I'll have to submit patches against snapshots. As I see it, there are two options: 1. submit smaller patches periodically between snapshots, but possibly patches made against out-of-date code. 2. submit larger patches every time a new snapshot comes out, including all the changes I've made since the last snapshot. Option 1 has the advantage that I can submit smaller patches, but 2 has the advantage that the patches are more likely to be up-to-date. My inclination is towards option 2, but I thought I would ask on the list and see if there was a preference here... Thanks, Warren

Introduction and Sparc Solaris Status

Hi all, I'm trying to get winelib working on Sparc-solaris. I've got a few questions I'd like to ask, but I'm going to post them as separate messages, to keep the threading tidy. But to summarize my status - I've managed to get programs/{winemine,clock,notepad} all mostly working. The main remaining bug is that the mouse cursor doesn't show up in any of the windows. I'm currently looking into this one, but am having trouble figuring out which bit of rope to start pulling on. Any suggestions would be very welcome. My goal is to fix the mouse cursor, and then start cleaning up what I've got to submit a patch sometime fairly soon. Thanks, Warren

regression in X11DRV_DIB_SetImageBits

This bug was introduced recently into wine. I haven't been able to submit a bug report until recently due to another bug that would not allow me to type into the Wine-dbg> window, but this seems to have been fixed. This happens when I start AOL 5.0. After that, I click login and I get this crash. I used to be able to log in and I can still do it if I choose guest and then type in my ID and passwd. BTW, this is over TCP/IP and not dial up. Oh, and as you can see, the copy and paste from wine into linux is kind of whacked :) printing several copies -- I click select all (in the debug window) from right context and then copy. Then middle click into my email program (linux Evolution). If you need any more info, I would be happy to provide it. Thanks. FW: cygwin/wine port

Hello Dimi, At wineconf you said you did the initial work on the cygwin port and I was wondering if I could get some help from you on it. I have been able to build libwine_unicode.dll wrc.exe and winebuild.exe under cygwin and mingw but I have had to do some tweaking of the makefiles and I am not having much luck making changes to ./configure. 1. The LIBEXT option is not being set as DLL. It is still getting configured as .so so when make gets to linking, she pukes out. I have to manual change in the makefile. LIBEXT = dll SONAME = module_name.dll LIBEXT = dll DLLEXT = .dll 2. wineinstall/configure is not putting DLLWRAP=dllwrap in the makefiles. It is finding dllwrap but not adding it to the makefiles. DLLWRAP = dllwrap 3. We will need to come up with a way to tell configure not to build the other dlls with the *.spec. Alignment issues on sparc in convert_bitmap in wrc/newstruc.c

I've got a solution to some of the alignment problems in wrc for sparc-solaris, but I wanted to bounce them off the -devel list before submitting a patch. I'm going to describe the problem first, and then my solution to it. Sparc-solaris machines are a little pickier about byte alignment than x86-linux machines are (don't know about x86-solaris - haven't played with it). Basically things like ints need to be aligned on word boundaries, or else you get a bus error when you try to access them. The following code fragment: struct myStruct { int a; int b; }; int main() { int tmp = (int) malloc(sizeof(struct myStruct)+2); tmp += 2; struct myStruct *myS = (struct myStruct *) tmp; myS->a = 0x12345678; return 0; } Causes a bus error on the assignment into myS->a. Commenting out the tmp += 2 line of course solves the problem. Unfortunately this kind of thing is happening in a few places in wrc/newstruc.c - in calls to convert_bitmap. The actual bitmap data is 22 bytes into the raw data from the resource file. The raw data is properly aligned on a word boundary, but the bitmap data isn't. The current process is to call convert_bitmap on the data, and then memcopy/memmove it into it's final resting place. The final resting place *is* word-aligned. The solution I've taken in my code is to reverse the order - first I memcopy/memmove the bitmap data, and *then* I call convert_bitmap. This seems to solve the problems on sparc-solaris, and I can't see how it could hurt on Linux (but I haven't had a chance to test it on Linux yet). Does this make sense? stable vs. unstable trees

toolbar.c regression at version 1.108

Hi all, It would appear the toolbar.c has been broken at revision 1.108 as version 1.107 works. This patch causes toolbar flyouts to disappear unless the mouse is held down and moved over them, rather than as before where they don't disappear until clicked. Why Wine is like playing the guitar

Ok, I've had some time to digest the two packed days of wineconf. It was great being around so many smart and passionate people. I've long since given up coding, so much of it went over my head but the various biz presentations hit home and I had a chance to talk to many of you to crystallize some thoughts. We need 20 million avid Linux desktoppers. Look at what Apple's vocal minority gets them. With 4% marketshare they command sections in stores. They get hardware with Mac/Win drivers. They get documentation in the box. Even stores dedicated just to them. That's what we need to get Linux really going. If we can get the user inertia and the business inertia around Linux, then that will take it to new heights. I believe Wine will play a role in this. But I think a slight re-focusing may be necessary. Have you ever tried to learn how to play the guitar? I think most people have at one time. First you start learning chords and you say to yourself "I'm going to learn all the chords so I can play all the songs". After about struggling through 4 of the 700 chords, you realize that it will take until 2037 to learn all the chords. To make guitar rewarding, you have to start with a list of popular songs and learn the chords just for those. This way you get that feeling of success and it motivates you to stick with it, even if it's just learning Happy Birthday. I believe a similar strategy could really energize Wine. We need a "top 10 tree". What WINE needs is a specific value promise to the consumer. In many ways, the same challenge confronts WINE that confronts Linux. Great things will happen *if* we get a bunch more users. But to get more users, there needs to be some specific value that people get from Wine. And it can't be fleeting value. It needs to allow them to do something specific and when they get the new version, it needs to no take away that value, but add more. The challenge we have now is that the goal for WINE is an architectual one (learn every chord). While nobody can deny the value of a solid underpinning, users don't care about the architecture. They want to hear music! And with Wine this means "what programs can I run?" I would also suggest that focusing around specific applications focuses energies of developers on solving specific user problems. The more problems you solve, the more users will get excited about Wine. One question arose at wineconf which never got addressed. "How do we get more people excited about Wine?" I've been thinking about that. I believe a specific part of the answer is making Wine actually work for a subset of programs. Take it from a theoretical white paper stage to a stage where people actually use it. I'm not suggesting its at a white paper stage, but rather if the world can't use it with any regularity for even a narrow set of applications, the perception is it's nothing more than theory. What I believe needs to happen is that we have a 'top 10' tree. A version of Wine for which the primary goal is to do a good job of running a set version of win32 programs. This serves both parties. It gets developers all laser-focused on the same goal. Because we've narrowed the universe we can do specific testing. And perhaps MOST important, consumers know what to expect. If you tell them "we have a Linux OS which will run Win32 programs, they'll bring out a geneology program from 1992 which won't run and then they'll think it sucks. If however the public commitment is "this software is designed to run the following: MS Word Lotus Notes Quicken" and it actually works, you have a believer. You have someone who will get excited and will offer their help. You give momentum to Wine. You get program sponsors (those willing to oversee ongoing supervision/testing of programs. You get more people offering to be on documentation teams. And you get more developers. One final thought. I think the only tenable way to implement a Top 10 type approach is to get widespread support. Lindows.com alone is too small to do this in a timely fashion. So is Codeweavers, transgaming, etc. The only approach with any chance of success is one which leverages the entire community. I can assure you that Lindows.com would put our full weight behind such an endeavor. While we only have a couple of coders, we've got a super QA department. We've got solid organizational skills. We have an enthusiastic user base we can tap for testing and support. I'll shutup now before I get banned from wine-devel. -- MR Ok, those are my thoughts.

I am not convinced this is exactly the problem. I also have the problem that I have moved over from a home compiled Wine install to a Debian build, so I would need to wait for it or something like it to appear in the regular build and then get into DEB format. mapping a directory

Hello All, I have installed the latest Wine onto my Linux Redhat 7.2 and it seems to run very well for the most part. I can easily map a Linux directory to a Windows drive, but I actually have a need to be able to map a linux directory to windows subdirectory. This afternoon (3-21 @ 12:30ish) I downloaded the current cvs and tried to build and install it. I made it through configure and make depend without any problems, but make returned: /usr/bin/ld: warning: libwine_unicode.so needed for libntdll.dll.so, not found I saw that libwine_unicode.so was indeed there so I did a make, make install on the unicode directory. That completed without any errors so I went back to the wine root direcotry, did make clean; ./configure; make depend; make; make install and that all completed without errors. Then when trying to run wine I get the error: wine: error while loading shared libraries: libntdll.dll.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory I thought you guys might need the information on the cvs, and if not, maybe at least you could help me. wineconf and ideas

Just wanted to say I had a really interesting time at WineConf2002. Mucho gracias to Lindows for their generosity in hosting it. I'm pretty much new to wine so I got a lot out of it, and it was great meeting the Wine developers in person. Here are a couple of points that I would really like to agree with about what was already mentioned that's needed for Wine. 1) Use the winehq bugzilla. There are only something like less than 500 hundred bugs in reported so far. I'm sure that the number of actual bugs is dozens of times more than that. Also bugzilla lets people know who's working on what, what issues are being worked on, and other information that makes it easier for newcomers. Something that wasn't really mentioned but maybe should be is to let there be more of an established process in how bugs go through their cycle. Normally that's largely the role of QA and in an open source project QA is one of the less "fun" roles, but it's still needed. For example, I submitted a patch that fixed a bug and I'm now curious how and when that goes to the "closed" status. 2) Create the unit/regression tests. In Xtreme programming I vaguely remember that writing the unit test is the first step before actually writing any code to clearly define the technical requirements and also verify that it does what it needs to do. I can see the value in that, even though it wouldn't be practical to take it to that level. Possibly as an idea, there could be two levels of tests. One, more of a sanity test type check and another which would be much more rigorous and lengthy for regression and unit testing. Making a few tests is something that I could start with right away. Wineserver seems an interesting place to start doing stuff and poking around, but I don't want to get in too deep right away. Besides I heard there's already work being done on it in some way (hint: if it was in bugzilla I'd know exactly what's being done and by whom). Maybe I'll do a developer type doc on wineserver and how it all works as I figure it out for myself. Michael Robertson commented on how wine could attract attention by focusing on a top 10 sort of list. That seems like a good idea. That's one of Lindows' main goals anyway, right? Maybe they could start submitting bugs from their own testing. If Lindows want's to make a substantial difference in Wine development why don't they hire more than 2 developers devoted to it? Working off of and submitting to the official LGPL Wine source would also obviously be a great help too. Having a proprietary code fork doesn't really help the official Wine out that much, especially if it's never merged back in.

Also, this build fail illustrated a couple of problems with the current setup, so any updates to wine wont cause WRT to update for a little while. Should be back in action again soon, though. Hi, I'm today interested by the Internet Explorer screen shot. I want to use it to start a game (a plugin needed by the game to start requests IE to function.) I have today problmes with the drawing of the icons bar where home page, stop, refresh and so on are sitting. They display for the moment in all black. I would know how to display them correct. I tried IE 5, 5.5 and 6 and after all the result is the same : black icons are dislayed with all the 3 versions. Bugzilla and the Apps database

I would like to see some integration of the apps database with bugzilla. The way I see it the best way for this to work is for the apps database to be a front end to bugzilla for users. If a user has a problem with the application they could search to see if the problem was already reported or enter a new bug . Dependancys for getting the application working 100% could be integrated in this way. The application maintainer could help make sense of useless bug reports, identify duplicate bug reports and help decide when a bug was resolved. Any comments? Tony Lambregts

using libntdll.so in console app?

Hi, I need some help. I've search through docs, and winelib-howto, but didn't find what i need. I want to use libntdll functionality (and some other winapi functions) in a linux console app. The app. is basically a linux program, i just have to call some functions provided in win32 .dll form (no source). I tried: int main(){ void* handle=LoadLibraryA("test.dll"); int (*myfunc)(int x)=GetProcAddress(handle,"MyProc"); int ret=myfunc(123); ... } it's compiled with -lntdll (it also links to libwine.so automagically) but when running it, I got only Invalid Heap: 00000000 message. i think i should call some Init() function before using wine functions. but i was unable to find which one... :( i don't want to use the documented way, so making WinMain() and let wine to handle main() and call my program as an library/function. libloader.a in avifile/mplayer/xine provides such functionality, but it lacks of many function implementations so it's unusable (yet) for me :( thanks, A'rpi / Astral & ESP-team -- Developer of MPlayer, the Movie Player for Linux - http://www.MPlayerHQ.hu

Automatic Regression Testing

I was sitting in a sitting room, Toying with some toys, When from a room marked Gruesome, There came a gruesome noise. I've been "toying" with an automatic regression testing system over the past month or so. FlexLM and "tcp_s is bad"

Hallo, I have a demo of a commercial Linux application, which comes with FlexLM protection but doesn't have a Linux vendor daemon. Running windows flexlm with the windows vendor daemon and --winver win95 --dll netapi32=b works fine and will save me having to run a NT Box with VMWare in the background. Good! Running Linux flexlm calling the windows vendor daemon via wine however doesn't work. Flexlm aborts with a message "tcp_s is bad!!!". Could this tcp_s be some sequence number that our present winsock implementation does wrong somehow? I can give more evidence on reqeust. Any help appreciated. _snprintf vs snprintf + proposed patch

Hello, When working on my port of wrc to windows I had to change snprintf to _snprintf in ppy.y on line 294 to build under mingw. I checked the msdn and didn't find anything on snprintf or _snprintf so I don't know if this patch will work for building under visual studio. Do I need to make a check for HAVE_SNPRINTF? I'm using msys and mingw so I can write a configure check if that is what is needed. Here's my wineconf summary. It's not much of a summary, since it's so damn long. I wanted to record as much as possible for the developers that weren't there because I think a lot of ideas and direction was generated and should be shared among the community. I put in <> brackets in areas where I need correction, and I am going to correct some of those myself. Andi, I'd like to put this on winehq somewhere with the presentation files hyperlinked from the same page. Once I get all the presentations, I'll provide you with them. Once it's ready, maybe we can submit it to slashdot for everybody who couldn't be there. I really want to thank all of you for your participation.
