Yes and in many cases it did work without unistd.h, but maybe that is because it really wasn't needed at all. In some case it might have worked because some of the functions in unistd.h is defined else where in Windows and in some case we might get it to work by including needed files. Of course in such cases we probably should fix Wine and include that other header exclusively instead of unistd.h. Anyway, I just experimented a little trying to get Wine to compile under Windows. I'm not really sure exacly what to do. Eventually I guess that the non-core DLL:s never should call any non Windows functions at all and the core DLL:s are not really useful to compile and run under Windows anyway.

TSXxxx functions: die!

Once again, Since this list is (again!) so quiet, I feel obligated to stir the spirits a little. So here it goes: we should get rid of the TSXxxx functions. Why? -- we don't keep to standard API, which is against the Wine's spirit -- they introduce yet another (useless) layer -- we reaquire the lock like crazy for no good reason -- most modern X systems are already thread safe -- we integrate Wine's locking with glic's, so we should be OK -- they are ugly How? s/TSX/X/g rm -rf tsx + misc Makefile cleanups But I hear people screaming: how about portability? What about platforms where we don't integrate with libc's locking, or when we don't have a thread safe X? Well, we can create a wrapper driver which simply aquires the lock, calls into the regular driver, then releases the lock. In fact, I am not convinced we shouldn't deal this way with the current driver, to simplify the code. It's not like we're missing a lot on performance... -- Dimi.

I was looking at the WineHQ CVS last week-end (trying to add a section about how to contribute to Wine and to beef up the about section) and, at least to an untrained eye, it looks like it contains many obsolete files that should be deleted. Here are some examples: * a number of files exist in both .html and .shtml form. Isn't the html form obsolete? about.html & about.shtml contrib.html & contrib.shtml search.html & search.shtml who.html & who.shtml * some files have multiple versions lying around refs.html & refs.shtml & refs2.html index.shtml & indexold.html * there is a number of file that I'm not sure are still in use threads_etc, referenced from design.html which is referenced, but commented out, from indexold.html & test003.html win_utils_test, does not appear to be referenced anywhere shots.html, referenced only from indexold.html Is there a good reason to keep the above files? How long for CVS?

A few days ago I sent a patch for WritePrivateProfileSection that fixed the wrong behaviour that this function should create multiple keys with the same name which will be needed for wininit.ini. Now I have seen two updates of the CVS tree but this path hasn't been applied. Does this mean I should resend it to the pathces list, or should I wait a bit longer? How long does it usually take for a patch to get submitted?

Okay. I'll admit I am biased toward GNOME, but my real problem is that I didn't explain myself much, and I doubt people actually went to look at the gstreamer site. I had found it before, but forgot about. Why I think KDE should adopt gstreamer as well. It is not a replacement for ALSA, OSS, ESD, or aRts... it's an add-on to it. My understanding of the gstreamer project is that it's Linux/UNIX's response to the Windows CODEC system. It is a single interface to output video and audio from various types of input file types. They have support for MP3s, DIVX (coming), Ogg Vorbis, DVD, AVI, MPEG, Video 4 Linux, etc. for input files. It also supports OSS, ALSA, esd, aRts, X11, aalib (gotta love it), SDL, etc. for outputs. This is obviously not for programs that need low latency. It is for your everyday stuff. It is more than good enough for saying "you got mail," yet it would have support for lots of files types w/o specifically writing support for the new file type. This is also good for multimedia players and web browsers due to the support for lots of file types (I could see XMMS switching to this from its plugin system). Is this the answer for recording studio programs, remakes of Rebirth (WE NEED ONE OF THESE), or people that need the audio fast, but for the typical desktop user, it will be a god send. Only downfall I could see to the KDE crowd is the need to install GLIB. It doesn't require the full GTK+, just GLIB (linked lists and other datastructures). KDE could recommend using aRts for output and write its own input plugins for implementations that depended on a library KDE didn't need installed but KDE did install another one that implemented something simiilar. HECK, I don't think anyone would mind KDE writing their own underlying/core part, required you use aRts for output, didn't require GLIB (though this may be difficult), but used those input plug-ins. I understand KDE and GNOME have very different things in their head, but we need to get some standards here. XDND was way overdue (though I hear it wasn't a great implementation, at least they agreed on how to do something), and the two groups need to make more decisions like these to help each other strive. Remember everyone. I WAS a HUGE KDE fan myself for years. I had installed GNOME a couple times and hated it. I used KDE through 2.1 (I think... definitely in the 2.X). Then I discovered I had Blackbox on my machine, and it flew. I like the QT library (though I won't use it because I am now a GNOME guy). I like the layout of KDE... simple yet sophisticated. It tailors to the geek and the 'typical home user.' I just like GNOME's CORBA interface they are adding (which is where gstreamer will fit in). Something that can be so easily updated and contain potential problems is powerful (though VERY frustrating at times). I also love Ximian, who I feel keeps pushing the things that need to get done to make Linux a full fledged desktop system -- not to mention their love of all things monkey =) I salute KDE. They did the large scale desktop environment for the masses first (CDE is NOT for the masses anymore). They are probably still doing it best (I hear lots of complaints about some of GNOME's design). Are there any particular reasons that the authors of gstreamer believe that all of the existing audio APIs are unacceptable, or is this yet another case of the NIH syndrome that GNOME and KDE developers seem to suffer from all too frequently? And if there are problems with the existing APIs, what reason do we have to think that gstreamer will get it right? If people have issues with the existing sound daemons, their time could almost certainly be better spent working on the implementations /behind/ the APIs instead of creating the sound library du jour. It seems a terrible waste of programmer time to try to maintain as many as four library layers interposed between Wine programs and the audio hardware. I am considering writing a Wine Driver for esd. I am wondering basically where I start. I know esd is high latency (which may not be the best for such a thing), but I think it would be easier than trying to do alsa drivers. (I know ALSA has oss compatible drivers, but I can't get them to do a thing under wine... do work uner other programs.) Anyways, that leads me to here and me trying to help. Joe Tennies

Bug in MoveFileEx

I just played around with Thandor trying to install it and see what the differences are between Win98 and Wine because I noticed a slightly different behaviour. Now I discovered that MoveFileEx is not even available in Windows 98 but wine supplies it nevertheless. I suspect that the Setup doesn't check the windows version, but rather calls MoveFileEx and if that fails with not implemented returncode continues with other code to supply the functionality. I wrote a small test app to confirm this and this returns an error code when calling MoveFileEx on a native win98 whiel wine executes it. How shall I fix this? Shall I simply call GetVersion() to determine if MoveFileEx should be allowed or is there a different way with wine to determine which functions are available for which version (a global variable or such)? I looked through the sources but I couldn't find anywhere something where a versioncheck has been used to switch code but then again I don't know much functions where I know for sure that they are available in one version and not in the other. -- Bye, Gerhard If you think education is expensive, try ignorance.

hi, I have a program that use the CreateProcess API with dwFileAttribute as a parameter. But not to use in the command line. It's used to write some data into a file and then another program read that file. But this isn't working. I'm not a programmer, I'm just testing the program. Fix for MoveFileExA

I just wrote a fix for a fixme located in MoveFileExA. Since this is the first time I'm writing something for wine I wanted to ask how I shall proceed now. Shall I simply add it into the CVS or does it have to go somewhere for revision? Also I don't want to submit it right now because my current fix is a bit ugly. The fix is applied for files that should be moved or deleted when windows boots after an application is installed. Currently there was a message telling the user that he has to delete/rename the specified files. Now I added some code that writes an entry in (WINECONFIG)/bootmove and (WINECONFIG)/bootdel when these functions are called. I also added some code in loader/main.c that checks if these files exists and if they do it will open them and deletes/renames the specified files. I hope this solution is acceptable. :) The only ugly thing about this is that the filenames for bootmove and bootdel are curerntly hardcoded where I need them. I don't know if there is a global space somewhere where I can add some fixed names so I did it this way for now, but this is not the best way in case the names should be changed or something and also I don't like hardecoded names. Another drawback of this approach is that it would be possible that more than one process is writing or reading at the same time there could be potential problems, so I'd like to hear some opinions if this is ok. -- Bye, Gerhard If you think education is expensive, try ignorance.

Guys, I've come to _hate_ diffs attached as Application/OCTET-STREAM. Can you please, Please, PLEASE, attach them as Text/PLAIN? I use Pine over a ssh connection to read wine-{devel,patches}, and I can simply view the Text/PLAIN attachments, whereas I have to: -- press V to view the list of attachments -- select the attachment I want to view -- press S to save it to disk -- exit Pine -- start vi to actually view the thing -- restart pine... Just to view a Application/OCTET-STREAM attachment. Which means 2 things: -- I get frustrated (and look what happens when I do:)) -- I simply ignore those patches For all these reasons (and more), I think Linus is right when he insists on: -- ONE patch per email -- ONLY Text/PLAIN attachments. -- Dimi.

Bug in WritePrivateProfileSection

I just wrote a small up to test the behaviour of WritePrivateProfileSection. This confirmed my suspicion that the wine implementation is wrong because on Win98 I can create multiple keys with the same name when using this function, while wine always substitutes the new value if the key already exists. New to wine

Hello I happened to find wine when researching some undocumented stuff in shell32.dll for my own shell extensions I had written. It was interesting to see how things may be done in windows. I also identified some parts in the wine shell32 which need more attention and plan to submit some patches concerning that after I have familiarized myself a little more with wine. Since I had no Linux system at my hands I tried to use the Visual C 5 compiler on my windows system to compile the shell32 dll and found some problems with that. Separate from some wine specific project definitions which need to be made for Visual C to process the wine headers Iand which I probably haven't done all properly) there was one problem with function pointer definitions. All wine headers seem to declare function pointers like <return value> WINAPI (*<function pointer name)(<parameter list>) Visual C 5 does not like the WINAPI (eg __stdcall) outside of the brackets and requires: <return value> (WINAPI *<function pointer name>)(<parameter list>) I could also not find any comprehensible ANSI C description which would care to explain what would be the correct way of function pointer declarations with a calling convention identifier. I tried to figure out how this could be solved. Declaring WINAPI to be empty and telling Visual C to use __stdcall as default gives other problems with internal wine functions without explicit calling convention declaration and with a variable argument list, which requires __cdecl. The only way I could find was to adjust the function pointer definitions in the affected headers. Of course this goes quite far and might cause problems with other compilers. As I will soon have a new development machine on which I will install Linux alongside of Windows I can fairly easily check if this would cause problems with gcc, but wine seems to care for more compilers than that and I have no idea if such a change would cause problems (it probably would anyhow :-| ). Maybe there is someone on this list which can give me an direct answer to this. Rolf Kalbermatter

Was this intentional does anyone remember ? Patch that broke SetFileAttributes

Fallout II requires that a certain file is located on a CDROM drive. For some reason it checks this using SetFileAttributes, which is supposed to fail on readonly drives. system directory selection

Hi folks, I just installed WINE for the first time and had some trouble getting dlls to load until I set the "system" option to my Win2k partition's system32 directory in wine.conf. Auto discovery of the proper system directory for wine.conf by wineinstall seems like a useful thing for new users. Would it be useful if I put together a small patch to the wineconf program so that running wineinstall will select the right system directory for configuration? Also, is it correct to assume that if a system32 subdirectory exists under the winnt or windows directory that it should be set given preference in wine.conf as the system directory? and while we are on the subject what is the philosophy on ifdefing header files? (I have freetype 2.0.1 from RedHat 7.1 so this morning's build failed because I don't have the trig stuff.) If we test for a header file and only include it if it is present should we be putting similar ifdefs around the code that required the header and providing alternatives when it is not present, or specifying that it NEEDS to exist?
