If I recall correctly, transparent .PNG's don't even work in IE on Windows (at least until the upcoming IE7.0).
With a bit of javascript wizardry and the aforementioned DXImageTransform you can get transparent pngs on IE. At least on a windows install of IE. I don't know if it works on wine.
