I think this is a problem: we have too many builds, and that's confusing. Let's just have the i386 one (with the Athlon optimizations) and be done with it. The download page is getting crazy, and we get too little benefit from all of these optimizations to justify the (user visible) complexity.
Could we show (our own pages) where users could choose distro, then distro version, then actual package? Instead of pointing them to a few screenful of files directly...
Another way to tackle it would be with the distro version not only in the filename but in the release name also (20041019 Fedora Core 2, then underneath it the list of corresponding packages).
Other ideas?

Perhaps a form structure similar to the one used to select download version on Nvidia's website is what you are interested in?
