Okay, so I've followed this thread, and I have a range of thoughts and what I think is a simple solution.

I'm just going to agree with the whole post since you usually don't hear from people who agree.
Third, I think the biggest problem is that there are 2 places
to go for help. The wine-users mailing list, and the
legacy usenet newsgroup.
Yup. Definitely a problem. Once in a while I browse around on the old newsgroup, wine-users and I've also looked at the third-party online forums when it was around. Basically I noticed there's a ton of people out there willing to help others, but the brains seem to be disconnected. I've seen the same question appear in different forums multiple times. There's a few masochists who read all those forums and respond to the same questions on each.
I really think there's two solutions: 1. Discard wine-users and the c.e.m.w. newsgroup and move strictly to our own web forum. 2. Get the old mail-news gateway in place and refer people to groups.google.com for their web viewing pleasure.
#1 doesn't seem viable. #2 will just collect a bunch of people whining about the user interface (sorry Mike, I know you like your avatars), but there's no possible web interface that could make everyone happy.
Our forums page does suck though.
