Sorry to bother - apparently Owen Rudge has done quite a bit of basic texture work, so I will await his patches to start my texture work.
As for teapot, Henri recommends looking at freeglut. I know wine is: http://www.winehq.org/license GPL 2.1
Freeglut is "freeglut is released under the X-Consortium license." http://freeglut.sourceforge.net/index.php#download
Just wanted to double check if these are compatible.
