It is, in fact, point #3 that makes this combination faster than running a full blown emulator. It also holds true to the Wine name - the wine code is not used (is not) as an emulator.
Just to point out that EXACTLY the same discussion took place here not that long ago (in August precisely) with the 'Wine Ma os X port' subject :-)
