Sorry Rene, I thought this thread should have a title that related to Dragon. By all means continue your v8 attempts under ViaVoice alias. ;)
you have restimulated my interest in this so I will push ahead with v7 since I did not have some of the issues you are having with v8. I'm pretty sure the guts of the thing are identical as far as speach rec. technology goes.
Recap:
* app-emulation/wine : [ I] 20041019-r3 (0)
.wine/config attached
This is on a clean installation of the above version. I copied the config from a prev installation but I dont think there any magic.
Installed from a CD using :
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="ole32,oleaut32,rpcrt4=n" wine h:setup.exe
No issues at all with installshield. One thing to note is to move all dlgs to one side since at some stage there is a yes/no modal dlg that pops up centre screen but does not come to the top of the z-order. Since it is hidden behind the logo/dlg and it does not have the focus you cannot access it.
I deselected the quickstart option and the Text to speach files and opted for UK English lang model.
Once install finished I did wineboot and got the following:
prof@newsys ~/.wine/c $ wineboot fixme:ddeml:DdeConnectList (1,0xc000,0xc000,(nil),(nil)): stub fixme:ddeml:DdeQueryNextServer (0x1,(nil)): stub fixme:ddeml:DdeDisconnectList (0x1): stub err:wineboot:runCmd Failed to run command (0) err:wineboot:ProcessRunKeys Error running cmd #1 (0)
Did not dig for detail m but I dont think there is anything critical there. (We are not expecting DDE to work!)
Now the sticky bit :
wine natspeak.exe fixme:vxd:VXD_Open Unknown/unsupported VxD L"nwlink.vxd". Try setting Windows version to 'nt40' or 'win31'. err:toolbar:TOOLBAR_TestImageExist index 8 is not valid, max 8 err:toolbar:TOOLBAR_TestImageExist index 9 is not valid, max 8 ............
fixme:mixer:MIX_GetLineInfo Unhandled component type (MIXERLINE_COMPONENTTYPE_DST_VOICEIN) fixme:mixer:MIX_GetLineInfo Unhandled component type (MIXERLINE_COMPONENTTYPE_DST_VOICEIN) fixme:mixer:MIX_GetLineInfo Unhandled component type (MIXERLINE_COMPONENTTYPE_DST_VOICEIN)
This seems similar to the probs Rene Rebe reported with ViaVoice.
Apart from this the Dragon tool bar comes up cleanly and allows me to open DragonPad editor. There seems to be no other major issues which is promising.
I was able to short circuit this issue with NS v4 by skipping the audio setup and running gentrain.exe directly since the real prerequisit is to run the user training setup.
Running the training through natspeak (which is reqd. before you can do anything with the mike) first tries to set the mike level and we stump.
Two approaches seem possible:
1/ Set the mike level in Linux and con NS that is has been set. 2/ Resolve the technical issue with wineoss / winealsa so that it can control the mike and do what it "thinks" it needs to do.
2 is ultimately what needs to be done but is out of my hands.
1 seems more accessible but last time I looked I did not find anything in the ini files , probably need to do some reg hacking. Poss with ref to a true wine install of v7
Ideas / thoughts...
Regards.

Why do you do this? What errors do you get otherwise?
Aside from the problem described in the thread "TMStubImpl_Invoke Does not support iface" using my existing big wine-c with IE and AutoCAD the setup.exe does install the files without the above overrides. The "only" problem I get is:
err:module:find_forwarded_export module not found for forward 'Ole32.DllRegisterServer' used by L"C:\windows\system\comcat.dll"
And then when trying to start the applications a dlg that tells me that the 'nstex50.dll' can not be found though it is present in the c/Program Files/ScanSoft/NaturallySpeaking/Program which also is my working directory where I start e.g. the natspeak in ...

Yep - same here. However I can move the dialogs covered behind the Scansoft/Dragon splassh screen to click ok ...

Hm - I do not get those - "just" the nstex50.dll not found error above.

So it is not trying to load the 'nstex50.dll' guess it is doing some flie loopup (stat equivalent) on it and complains before trying to load or so. Any idea how I can convince it to search in the "c/Program Files/ScanSoft/NaturallySpeaking/Program" where the dll is located after the installation ?

No, I got that line from frankscorner, it worked.

Like you say it's clearly not even trying to load it.
Not sure what it is doing to check it presence, maybe it expects it to be in PATH.
You could try copying it to /windows/system
I get no errordlg when I run it but it stalls on the audio setup as I posted details earlier.
Can you clarify? Are you testing v7 here?

What PATH does wine use? The U*ix one?

Tried that - no difference.

I can start the audio setup seperatly - that part seem to work on my side :-(((

Yes - that is v7 - v8 does - due to the USB stack installer - not install.

I was able to run wine audio.exe
I let is start and turn off the mike ! Then I turn it back on and am able to complete the volume setting and quality test. I just got through with s/n of 15. (I got 22 on win but it is possible that I have changed my sound card since.)
However , when I come back and run natspeak.exe it still says my user has not run the audio setup and I am back to square one.
Maybe your dll issue has meant that you have not come up against this yet :(

I got s/n of 23 IIRC. With a AKG D3700 microphone on my on-board sound chip - I could try if it is significantly better on a Midiman Delta 1010 - 10 channel 24bit 96kHz studio card, ... ,.-)
However , when I come back and run natspeak.exe it still says my user has not run the audio setup and I am back to square one.

I really wonder which tiny bit is missing to make natspeak load this damn dll - I tried your config with no difference ...

It seems that running the audio setup from command line gets around the blockage that there is in running it through the GUI, (in fact there it is a dlg just before it executes audio setup that blocks.)
However it is the vocab training that we really need to get to for the user.
This used to be (circa v4) gentrain.exe , that file is no longer there.
Any idea how to do this outside the GUI?
Regards.

just remembered there is now gentrain.dll if that's any help.

That's where I put mine. I am wondering whether you have v7 and v8 installed and there is some confusion due to that.

Hm - your version seems to be different enough to make the difference from working to not start up ...
I can neither change the install path during the installation (the dialog will just use the default string when I click on ok when I entered my own one) - and my registry does neither contain such an entry:
[NaturallySpeaking 7.0] Install=C:\progs\Nat7\Program
Only many other NS entries ...

I never got v8 to install - and I always start will clean wine installs, since I make a tar snapshot everytime I got s.th. new to work - and also tried with less stuff installed to see if e.g. some other applications changes the behaviour.

Very wise, you are obviously thorough in the way you work but these questions have to be asked when tracking down a problem.
and my registry does neither contain such an entry:
not a reg entry it was in the file nsinstalled.ini in the directory I indicated. Maybe I was not clear enough when I types "cat *ini"
What do you have in ~/.wine/c/windows/Speech/Dragon ?
I can neither change the install path during the installation ...
You should be able to. I did have to "insist" a bit , it did revert once but I managed to go back and get the directory I wanted.
And then when trying to start the applications a dlg that tells me that
the 'nstex50.dll' can not be found
This may be a corrolary of you your comcat error which I do not get.
Try googling for comcat.dll , in particular this seems relevant.

-rw-r--r-- 1 rene users 74 Jun 11 10:11 c/windows/speech/Dragon/nsinstalled.ini
I tried copying the nstex50.dll that NS is missing into that dir - but it did not help. The .ini has this content:
[NaturallySpeaking 7.0] Install=c:\PROG~FBU\ScanSoft\NATU~BD1\Program
It seems our NS 7 versions differ quite a bit in the way they spread and install files ... :-(((

err:module:find_forwarded_export module not found for forward 'Ole32.DllRegisterServer' used by L"C:\windows\system\comcat.dll"

I just rerun the install in a clean wine-ie snapshot:
The only error during the installation I get is a pop up dialog telling me:
Result: DllRegisterServer() Return code: 800401f0
At that time I get this on the terminal:
err:module:find_forwarded_export module not found for forward 'Ole32.DllRegister Server' used by L"C:\windows\system\comcat.dll
Which might be related - I guess the installer wants to register the dll or so which fails?
