Whether or not the patch Michael attached is the "real" fix, it should solve the immediate problem (the assert failure.)

I think it's an appropriate solution for now. I'll get back to it soon, it's quite likely that the assertion itself is wrong (character strings which are 0 pixels wide make sense to me, I'm just not sure if the wrapping code is able to deal with them).
