I seem to have a number of applications that no longer seem to display any text, the text is either missing or is replaced with a dash '-'. Thing is, I'm running Suse 9.3 so maybe it's actually a problem in wine, not the Ubuntu packages ? unless somethings also broken on my system. I install wine from source every time.
The apps that no longer display text for me are ...

No notepad is not working correctly either. It is displaying text correctly for it's menus, file edit search and help, however when you type anything into the notepad all the characters are invisible, as if they are white characters on a white background.

The first time you start notepad after a fresh install of wine it seems to start with the font called 'system'. After that it will start up with whatever the last font used was."

Subject: 9.35 font problems.
Just updated to 0.9.35 and now the fonts are very bad, can hardly read them. Anyone know what happened?
Thanks Scott...

I have no such problems on Debian/Sid with a self compiled wine 0.9.35.

Thanks, maybe it's my system fonts then. I'll look a little deeper into it and also try running notepad on another Suse system.

It only seems to be the fonts with the extension .fon that don't display. Also the 'system' font in [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE][Software]Microsoft][Windows][CurrentVersion][Fonts] has no value set.
I'm not sure if wine looks here or elsewhere but changing it does not seem to do anything even if I change it to arial.ttf.

I suspect 0.9.35 was build without FontForge, and that is the source of all this troubles.

I'm not so sure, I have fontforge installed & ./configure made no mention of it being missing (unless it didn't look for it)

Mhm, from the log of my compilation:
hafi@t900:~$ grep -i fontforge ~/wine/0.9.35/wine-0.9.35/typescript checking for fontforge... fontforge fontforge -script ../fonts/genttf.ff courier.sfd courier.ttf fontforge -script ../fonts/genttf.ff system.sfd system.ttf fontforge -script ../fonts/genttf.ff small_fonts.sfd small_fonts.ttf fontforge -script ../fonts/genttf.ff ms_sans_serif.sfd ms_sans_serif.ttf fontforge -script ../fonts/genttf.ff marlett.sfd marlett.ttf
That is very similar to that, what Nick has written:
