msi valgrind regression around Dec 4th

appeared between Nov 30 and Dec 4, and is still present in today's,

I pinged James about it and a few others on Dec 5th; he
seems to have fixed the others, but this one remains.

I don't have a computer right now, so any fixes I do are by eyeballing
the code.  This will have to wait until I can get a new computer,
unless someone else wants to fix it.
