Using Win98SE dlls (DX 8.1), Debian unstable Wine package

If you look at snapshot2.png, it says that it needs 16-bit colors. Changing to normal (non-desktop) mode doesn't fix it.
From what the log says, it looks like Half-Life is trying to fix the settings itself (and load defaults from config), but it can't do so.

You are showing ChangeDisplaySettings as a stub, but a while ago I submitted a patch implementing ChangeDisplaySettings and EnumDisplaySettings. Half-Life was one of the applications I used to test, and it should do something sensible even if you have XVidMode disabled in the config file.
Which version of Wine are you running? I do not believe those fixme lines are present in the current one.
