Folks,
Wine 1.8 is released, congratulations to everybody!
The development branch is now open for business, you can resend patches that had been deferred. However, I expect that things will be slow in the next couple of weeks, since many developers are leaving on vacation. I won't be around a whole lot myself either, so it may take a while before we are caught up. I will try to make a 1.9.0 release this Friday.
Michael Stefaniuc is now in charge of maintaining the 1.8 stable branch. Please see http://wiki.winehq.org/StableRules for details.
Happy holidays!

As we are approaching the dreaded "1.10", this or the next release seem like good opportunities to drop the meaningless "1." from our version numbers.

I figured we would go to "2.0" next, but it doesn't really matter.

In which case we can acknowledge that it's a decimal number, not the standard maj.min.patch, and just drop the period. 1.9 -> 2.0 -> 3.0 etc. No need to re-invent base-10 notation...

It's not necessary a decimal number. If the question is when should 1 become 2, there's a lot of possibilities. For example we could bump it every 10 years, so stable of the year 2018 will be 2.0.0.

IIRC, back at FOSDEM 2014 Alexandre said that 1.8/1.9 would be the last 1.x releases because people are confused by two digit numbers.

Yes, the plan is for the next stable version to be called 2.0. There are no plans yet for what happens after that, this would be a good Wineconf topic...
