Okay, so I've followed this thread, and I have a range of thoughts and what I think is a simple solution.
First of all, if disk space is an issue, it's easily corrected with a $100 IDE drive. I think the real issue is that Jer doesn't like to work on half baked ideas unless they're more fully baked or someone else he trusts is cooking in the kitchen :-/.
Second of all, it seems to me that the biggest problem is simply one of presentation. This is the relevant page: http://www.winehq.org/site/forums
The current information is really quite poorly presented. There is way too much information; the useful bits (the Gmane and Google links) are buried way to deep imho.
Third, I think the biggest problem is that there are 2 places to go for help. The wine-users mailing list, and the legacy usenet newsgroup.
For a while, the two were connected, until the old gateway we were using broke down, and Jer ripped his hair out trying to make it work.
But time has passed, and now Mailman has a builtin news <--> mail gateway system, and maybe we can reconnect them. (I'll go discuss this with Jer; if I'm not heard from ever again, it's because he beat me to a pulp with his printout of the Mailman manuals <grin>).
But if we can reconnect them, then I think a nice solution would be to retool that page so the Google interface pops out: http://groups.google.com/group/comp.emulators.ms-windows.wine
That looks forumishy enough to me to satisfy many people, and yet is nicely backwards compatible with all current systems.
Cheers,
Jeremy

Just took a look at it. I definitely agree!

Apparently there was not enough demand that someone actually got it working again. Therefore I'm wondering whether it really fills the need that people has..

Of the problems mentioned at: http://article.gmane.org/gmane.comp.emulators.wine.devel/41377
your idea provides a solution for 1, 2, 3 and 4. That's of course really nice. It doesn't have a solution for 7, which is something I think will be missed.
and yet is nicely backwards compatible with all current systems.
But is it good enough? It's rather inflexible since we can't change anything if we don't like it..

And 5, and 6, and 8.
And at the bottom of the 'subscribe' page for Google groups is a nifty link that reads: New! Get email alerts of messages containing specific keywords.
So I think that 7 is covered as well; you can also click on the little star to watch a particular topic via the web page.
So the only one not covered imho is 9, the 'sticky' feature.

Perfect is the enemy of good (or something like that, I forget the exact quote :-/).
Cheers,
Jeremy

Le mieux est l'ennemi du bien. Oops, excuse my French : Better is the enemy of good.

I think we ought to have some sort of a phpBB forum. That way you wouldn't get all this crap in your inbox - you could just selectively choose the topics that interest you :-)..

Yes, ok.

That's not quite the same, I'd say.
you can also click on the little star to watch a particular topic via the web page.
But you still have to manually go back and check the web page.
0 points out of 10 goes to Google's implementation of item #7 :-)...
Le mieux est l'ennemi du bien. / Better is the enemy of good.
Funny, I thought mieux was honey. No wonder I was getting strange looks?
Ahem. Right, it might not make sense to spend a lot of time implementing something if Google Groups is OK, and there's a decent chance that they'll add a proper 'cc me on this topic' feature before we ever finish our own implementation.

mod +1: Informative
I'm just going to agree with the whole post since you usually don't hear from people who agree.

Yup. Definitely a problem. Once in a while I browse around on the old newsgroup, wine-users and I've also looked at the third-party online forums when it was around. Basically I noticed there's a ton of people out there willing to help others, but the brains seem to be disconnected. I've seen the same question appear in different forums multiple times. There's a few masochists who read all those forums and respond to the same questions on each.
I really think there's two solutions: 1. Discard wine-users and the c.e.m.w. newsgroup and move strictly to our own web forum. 2. Get the old mail-news gateway in place and refer people to groups.google.com for their web viewing pleasure.
#1 doesn't seem viable. #2 will just collect a bunch of people whining about the user interface (sorry Mike, I know you like your avatars), but there's no possible web interface that could make everyone happy.
Our forums page does suck though.
