I don't think it is the compiler. I also am seeing the toolbar background not being painted on RH 6.2 with gcc 2.91.66. The problem started approximately the same time as it did for you, though I have not narrowed it down as accurately as you did.

It's the client rectangle in the toolbar (I believe). I've handed the issue back to Guy.
