Hey guys,
I don't know if anyone else has but I've been trying to get system shock 2 working with wine for quite some time. It segfaults with the latest versions of winex, but with a cvs of wine from 20030115 it works! Menus, sound and 3D all seem to be working fine, except for some slight texture corruption on things like door handles.
The problem is the 2D overlay stuff - the HUD, inventory, etc. are all missing which makes it unplayable. I saw on some other forum that it had been added to either wine or winex... anyone have any ideas?
Another problem is that ss2 no longer seems to work with the newer wine builds (20030327 at least) it just displays a message that says video card not supported.
So, I'd just like to know if the 2D stuff may work in the latest wines or not, and if so how to fix the video card not supported message - thanks for any info :) -Dan

This is a known problem on WineHQ. The support for this is planned but nothing has acually been done yet (it's something very annoying to do :-) ).
If I find time in the next weeks to rework on D3D, I may finally add this (it's THE one feature that is missing to make a lot of old games work properly).

Ah ? I will have to test it on my box for regressions then :-)

Oh man that would be great :) I'd have to buy you a few beers and a pizza for that hehe - I've been trying to get system shock 2 working in wine on and off for the past couple years, this would also make thief work I imagine since they use the same engine...
In the meantime I've been trying to get irrational to open the source code to ss2 for a native port rather than having to use wine, but since the engine was made by looking glass and they went out of business there seems to be some legal issues with it... keep me updated if you can :) cheers, -Dan

New systems generate new problems.

Well, if you patch latest Wine CVS yourself with the patch I just sent, SystemShock2 should work fine in 16 bit mode. Please let me know of any issues you have with it.
I tested Thief2 yesterday and it seems to work relatively well too.
