Because it was asked:
We have to move all (including closed) bugs from a component into others to remove that component. If an component is not empty when it's removed all it's bugs also get removed.
But there is also the possibility to just leave obsolete components around forever.

I've switched the components to unknown on the following components, so they can be removed:
console directx-dshow help ipc ports resources
These are the counts of the remaining obsolete components:
binary - 1193 directx - 375 files - 137 gui - 358 multimedia - 139 winelib - 143
I'll correct these components at a rate of about 100 a day so as not to spam the list too much.

Perhaps 'binary' could be automatically renamed to 'unknown' to avoid too much of manual work? Others can be checked/renamed manually.

I was wondering the same thing. The other components were short so I went ahead and changed those, but it would be great if we could "rename" the remaining components to unknown.
