Hi Project Reps!
The Outreachy program[1] (which is also a Conservancy member project) is working on its next round, set to open on February 16. If you are interested in participating as an "organization", now's a good time to get started[2]! The sooner your project is listed, the more likely you'll get strong applicants.
best, karen

What's the point of this project? It's basically "reverse sexism/racism". I'm not against hiring women or minorities, but I'd rather hire people because they're skilled, not because of their gender or skincolor. Thanks to the internet, there's nothing really stopping people from getting involved anyways.

The internet can be a very hostile place for women.

Can, but doesn't has to. It can be very hostile to men too, experienced that myself. But with anonymity, sex or gender don't really matter.

I'll add to that that while I'd like Fabian's statement to be true, it very much isn't.
I think the claim that programs like Outreachy are unnecessary is a gross mischaracterisation of the world we live in.

I don't really understand, what's preventing women/minorities from contributing? I think the main problem is that there just are to few women going into IT.

That's an old cliche, still wrong.
The amount of women contributors in open source is a lot *worse* than the amount of women in IT.
https://www.wired.com/2014/07/openhatch/ "According to a survey conducted last year, only about 11 percent of open source contributors are women. Meanwhile, women account for 23 percent of all computer programmers and 39.5 percent of web developers, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics."
https://www.linux.com/blog/how-bring-more-women-free-and-open-source-softwar... "Currently 25 percent of all software developers are women, but only 3 percent work in free and open source software."
bye michael

Maybe, but I'm not sure about that.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 21% out of 480 computer programmers are female. According to a stackoverflow survey however, 5-12% of all developers are female: http://stackoverflow.com/research/developer-survey-2016 That makes the 11 percent of open source contributors that are women a fairly good ratio.
https://www.linux.com/blog/how-bring-more-women-free-and-open-source-softwar e "Currently 25 percent of all software developers are women, but only 3 percent work in free and open source software."
Couldn't find a citation for that number, it also conflicts with your other number, that's nearly 1/4.
Again, I'd welcome it if there were more women in IT / open source, but if you do an outreach, why not for everyone? That would be more inclusive, and you still could make clear that you also address women.

That's what GSoC does for over 10 years now. And thanks to outreachy the number of women and minorities raised in recent years. If you still need to discuss if outreachy is necessary, the outreachy mailing list might be a better place to do so. Here we are discussing if Wine will participate, which is a different story

Thanks to the internet you can search for the answer yourself. Despite your perception this is an issue out there in the open source community.
Luckily the Wine Project is one of the sane projects where inclusiveness happens naturally. To quote Jeremy White: "Overall, I like to think that we're the friendliest large open source development community out there. Of course, that is a bit like saying that we're the friendliest and nicest pit viper :-), but still..."
And we like it like that.

You make it sound like you are in charge of hiring at Wine. Please stop doing that.

Yes, but I think the main reason is that there are also way more male programmers than female. I just think that we should fix this problem first, then we'd also get more women in open source.

Sorry, if that's misunderstandable, that certainly wasn't my intention, thought that was clear.

Organizations must have funding available or arranged for from a dedicated sponsor for at least one intern.
Grammar aside, do you have any idea how much it costs to do this? It seems like encouraging more people to get involved is always a good thing.

Unfortunately, I don't. If there is interest, I can reach out to SFC / Gnome for more info.

The website says 6500$ or sponsored by another org: https://wiki.gnome.org/Outreachy/Admin/InfoForOrgs#Action

Clearly I should have read further ;) I don't know how our benevolent funding overlords feel about this, but it seems like a good idea to me. We did spend a lot of time at WineConf trying to figure out ways to get more people to participate, maybe this project can help.

I haven't started a benevolent overlord thread yet. At least for my vote, I would like to know how the Wine community feels about it. If there is interest, then we can certainly consider it.

As far as I can read it, the requirements are $6,500 and a commitment to mentor (and they want a promise of 5 hours per week).
The Wine project has that much (although not a lot more), and I know a guy at CodeWeavers who could help with funding.
The other piece we would need is someone willing to sign us up and to create a landing page for this.
Do we have someone willing to volunteer to sign us up and someone willing to mentor?
And the deadline is tomorrow :-/.
Cheers,
Jeremy

I can do the signup/coordinating. We'll need a mentor though.

It's done. Their advisory board will review.
If you're interested in mentoring, please contact me. I plan to contact former GSOC mentors individually to ask as well.
I'd like to thank Codeweavers for sponsoring!

If the 6500 US$ figure is the minimum amount of money, then I would say no.
While I am not sure about our current balance, this amount would definitely be a huge chunk of our funds. These can be used better, e.g. the usual travel support and conference sponsoring.
If we can assist with public statements or some program or help offers that might be the better approach.
Ciao, Marcus

Sorry, I was coy earlier; I was waiting on some feedback from Karen.
To be clear, CodeWeavers will sponsor it and provide the $6,500. So if we have someone to volunteer to coordinate, and a few people willing to mentor, we should be good. (I already have Stefan, so we have game related stuff covered).

I can mentor too and/or be a backup for Austin on the coordination part. Though for the mentoring part the usual disclaimer applies: my Wine technical knowledge is rather broad but very shallow.

I am willing and interested in mentoring. I have not been as active recently but still feel like I could help. Sign me up.
