Careful. It is a trap. He is fine with it if it is done *right*. Figuring out what the last name is is a hard problem.

The old revisions were updated manually. The current revision is updated automatically from git "committer information" (e.g. 'user.name' config variable , and most people happen to set it to "firstname family_name"

That one you did is not correct either: - I see some Spanish "double" last names sorted by the 2nd one instead of the first. - In Dutch the "van" is not part of last name so you cannot sort those under "V"
I'm sure there is more of that in other languages. Like I said this is not a trivial problem. And not a problem that can be automated thus not sustainable long term. There's a reason git opts to sort the text lines.

Particles "van" and "de" can be parts of last name for non-Dutch persons.

This is clearly going nowhere.
Non-Dutch names starting with a last name of van can be placed under v and d can be placed under d.
Non-Dutch names like Van Buggenhaut can be placed under V instead.
