I've pasted the content from the FAQ onto the wiki here: http://wiki.winehq.org/FAQ
I'll spend some time updating it, formatting, and removing cruft this weekend.
What I couldn't figure out how to do, however, was create a patch for wine docs that deletes the actual en/wine-faq.sgml file from the source code, which still lives in a CVS repository. Could someone tell me how to do this with cvs?
Thanks, Scott Ritchie

I really don't think this is a good idea: * it's going to be less usable on the Wiki AFAIK * it's going to be fairly hard to edit since it is so big * it changes so seldom that it may as well stay on the main site * we'll lose the other formats (.txt and .pdf)
I think it needs more discussion before we do such a transition. If people agree to remove it, I can remove it from the docs/ package.

MoinMoin Wiki has support for XSLT (currently not enabled on winehq) and thus we could use DocBook XML source directly in the Wiki and thus we wouldn't loose these to features. See http://wiki.winehq.org/HelpOnXmlPages for more information about this.

Yes it didn't change because nobody could be bothered to craft a patch. There are already some FAQ entries that accumulated on Wiki pages, e.g. see previous content of http://wiki.winehq.org/FAQ .

That would be nice as it would make it easier to handle translations. Is this the approach you're using?

Howso? Most people read our documentation (especially when they have a question to ask) by doing a websearch and poking around on our website. Bundling the FAQ with Wine doesn't add too much to this.
- it's going to be fairly hard to edit since it is so big
It's going to be a LOT easier to edit on the wiki then in that horrid monstrous SGML file.
- it changes so seldom that it may as well stay on the main site
It changes so seldom that about half of the entries are obsolete and might even make users more confused after reading than before.
- we'll lose the other formats (.txt and .pdf)

I brought this up on the list last month (I think), and no one objected so I just went ahead and did it (after being lazy for a month). Anyway, we can talk about it now. I'm gonna go ahead and edit the wiki page (and include the new questions) in the meantime.
Thanks, Scott Ritchie

Hi Scott, Wiki is really a good idea. In the past I've been an opposer of Wiki engines, but nowadays I'm convinced of its usability.
It should be also worhty to make nightly/monthly Wiki dumps to Wine versioning system to be able to distribute the documentation offline, for Wine users without net access.
As modern Wiki engines support PDF and TXT page dumps, the only discussion IMO is how to automate wiki dumps to PDF/TXT/HTML and how to sync regularly with GIT/CVS repository. Sync should be also made before each Wine release.
Thanks Vit Hrachovy

Well, you maybe right. Let's see how well the new FAQ works on the wiki, and then decide which one to keep.
